Hello ladies! i thought it would be a good idea to make a group for Submarine girls, just because it takes a special kind of girl to be a Submarine, girlfriend, wife or fiancee :)
yea there isnt really places like that here haha..
silver or black with diamonds on them sparkle sparkle haha.. everyone keeps telling me to order onlne and have them shipped here but then i have to pay for shipping which in the end will be paying the same amount if i just bought them from the store here.. we have kmart, ross, payless, some kind of local shops, nine west, gucci, couch, yea you get the jiff bunch of high dollar stores.. gotta love the tourist area
thanks kelsi we are fine my son is up in his room playing video games but we were told to stay inside our homes and close the typhoon shutters.. it's a little nerve racking hearing the sirens and having the husband gone but we are fine..
it is supposed to be here by 11 pm our time.. i'll keep you all updated and thanks for the prayers..
well the tsunami hit but we are all okay the only thing i heard was that the boats got tossed around but so far that is all i have heard... thanks for the thoughts and i am going to bed night everyone..
Hi ladies- I just posted a discussion about housing in Bangor, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! We are currently in CRAPPY housing in Groton, CT and could use some advice before we move in a couple weeks. Thanks!!
All I can say, is that if you are going to live in Groton, stay away from the housing neighborhood called Trident Park. It is the oldest of neighborhoods and they always try to put ppl in it bc it's cheaper for them to fill it. Balfour Beatty runs all the housing out there. Take my advice and demand to be put somewhere else, like Polaris Park or Nautilus Park. We had a multitude of problems from mice nests, bugs, stove/fridge that broke on numerous occasions...and the houses are just NOT nice. Throughout our whole 2 bedroom home, we had white gross tile floors, except for the stairs. The stairs had nasty brown berber carpet that literally smelled like old feet. The walls are caked with paint, windows don't open right...I could go on and on. We cleaned our house from top to bottom before we moved in and the water was BLACK!! The only thing about Trident Park is that they don't take your full BAH, and you pocket about 300 extra a month. Honestly girl, I don't think it's worth it. Hope this doesn't scare you- just consider it a warning/favor. I can't wait to get outta here!! Oh, and be careful too because the leasing ppl will lie to you and tell you they don't have any other units beside Trident. You really have to fight bc there were plenty of empty units in the nicer neighborhoods...they just want to rent them out to civilians bc they get more rent money. In Groton, anyone can live in Navy housing bc it's privatized...
Wow, good to know. I had heard before about avoiding Trident Park, but I didn't know it was that bad. Any good strategies for being put where we want? I'm not sure I would know how to counter it if they told me there just aren't any other units available.
If you can, I would contact them asap and request to get put on a waiting list for some of the nicer neighborhoods they mentioned. If you mention the names and "know" what you are talking about, they'll work with you more. I wish I would have known more about it bc we went in blind...they definitely took advantage. I would just say (and yes, it's a lie but...) "Look, I know you guys have some empty units in Polaris and Nautilus bc you showed them to my friend last week." (A friend, meaning a civilian friend...because like I said, they try to get civilians into those houses first bc they can charge them more rent.) I guarantee if you say that, you'll trap them, and you'll at least have more of a chance at avoiding Trident Park. Hope this helps! I really wish I would have had this advice before I moved to Groton.
Thanks! I've been scouring their website (subasehomes.com) and know exactly which neighborhoods we qualify for by rank and family size, and we plan to drive around the neighborhoods to get a feel for them when I visit next weekend. I really appreciate the advice!
So as for on base housing in Groton...what did you guys have to purchase (washer/dryer, microwave, etc.)? We want to save some money and not use all of the BAH but also don't want to be stuck with a horrible place either ;) Does the BAH really cover everything for on base housing (rent, utilities, renter's insurance)?
omg trident park housing is gross i hated groton housing
bangor housing is NICE well the hosuing area i was in was nice thee is 3 areas. 1 housing is off of base and i do not recommend getting in that housing cause while i was there a few peoples cars got broken into and from what i have heard it was a bad neighborhood cause there are no gates.. i lived on base cannot remember which it was but the road was grayback and the housing down in that area is NICE NICE and the neighborhoods are clean.. the other housing is what the housing office called the other ghetto besides the off base housing ( i did not call it that the office managers called it that) i had a friend who lived in that area and they liked it just fine but they loved my place cause it was nicer and bigger.
housing includes dishwasher and refrigerator everything else you have to buy.. bah includes rent and utilities (lights, water, trash, and maintenance) renters insurance you have to purchase, from what i know housing has there own renters insurance but it only covers so much and when we took estimates it didn't even cover half of our stuff and when we moved it didn't cover our stuff so we got a separate renters insurance to keep our stuff covered.
so I need to ask a few questions, how often do your men get deployed? For how long? And how is communication with them? Are you able to skype on the subs?
when my hubs was on a boomer his schedule was pretty much 3 months out 3 months in but they can get extended out at sea.. my hubs is on a fast attack right now and they are in and out a lot and they also can be out for 6 months at a time. no you cannot skype on subs but if the pull into a port then yes they can if they are able to find a spot with internet.. my hubs gets a room and we skype that way. communication is not reliable on either types of subs there is email and mail drops it just depends on what they are doing and if they have time.
Sadly some do that...others I think just are not very informed, they can't know everything about every rate so they just say what they think they remember. We were fortunate and had a really awesome recruiter. He was always a straight shooter with us, made sure I as the spouse understood and was ok with everything, and if he didn't know something he looked it up or asked someone for us. If there was no way to be really sure of something, he was honest about that and just said that's the way of the Navy, we have to decide if we are ok with that. When we wanted to know more about what to expect with subs when he was offered the rate at MEPS, he found someone there who was a submariner who could answer our questions. That Sailor, also another recruiter but not one directly involved with my husband, took the time to answer every question to the best of his knowledge. He didn't gloss over the challenges but just honestly described what it has been like for him and his family. I am deeply thankful to those recruiters for their diligence and honestly while we made those important decisions.
BUT BUT BUT- you always want to cross reference and double check as much as possible because there ARE a lot of recruiters out there who don't have as much integrity as ours did. I always looked things up and asked questions of other wives as much as possible to try to get an accurate, big picture. If several sources agree, then it's usually true, it seems. And then...just be ready for a wild ride!!
Hi ladies, I'm Zahi my finace just finished BC and is Groton now for A schoo and C school. I know from what I've been told SUBS are a total different thing all togethre. So any advise that you ladies may have please throw it my way! LOL
congrats to your fiancée on his BC graduation and good luck to him in school.. ummn from what i have been told sub life is different cause surface the communication is sooooooo good.. it is like texting but through emails when your hubs is on surface haha.. but subs communication not so reliable that is all i know that is different cause my hubs has only been on subs.. what does your fiancée want to do on subs? and any questions feel free to ask :)
Thanks Navywife! I have no idea yet. He is still looking into it. He is such a research kindda guy...lol. And he just got there on Saturday so he's just looking into things!
My husband signed his contract and was given a job before he ever got to boot camp, do they get to change jobs later on? He signed up to be a culinary specialist but he really isn't sure about that position. he was never much of a chef. Will he have an opportunity to change jobs?
my husband didn't decide till he was almost done with boot i think.. he was offered nuke before he went to boot but turned it down, while in boot he was throwing around ideas of being so many things till he got info on being a sonar tech and decided he was goin to do that.. since Zahi fiancee is in groton then he is going to either St, ET, or FT schooling.. i think that is all of the schooling in groton, been so long haha
I don't remember mine signing a contract for a job. I mean he knew he wanted subs but other than that. He's still trying to figure it out. I think he's leaning towards FT.
He would like to stay in Groton. Cause is closer to home we're from Jersey. But he would also like GA. But your know we don't really have a say in it. LOL
ya'll have plenty of time to decide where ya'll will be after school lol.. if you have any questions feel free to ask.. but i best get my booty to bed since it is 10:08 P.M. here lol
we're from Jersey as well. I'm hoping for california or hawaii. I want to be somewhere nice and warm!! =) My husband is E3 already, I wonder why they made him choose a job so quickly when others didn't have to. He could have turned it down but then they wouldn't let him ship out to boot camp when he did.
ummmn you can still come to guam even with a young child but your husband has to be a certain rank to be able to get accompanied orders to some place overseas.. true they much rather send single sailors cause the navy thinks it is to stressful on newlywed couples.. even though we have been married for 6 yrs the navy still considers us newlyweds haha..
this whole overseas orders i am still confused on cause a lot of stuff we were told we have seen opposite..
Oh, he's E3 right now. Well I guess officially after BC. Well anyway, I don't really mind where we go, I'm up for an adventure. I've never left NJ except for short vacations and its about time I saw some other places. I suppose it keeps you young, being called newly weds for such a long time!
oh you'll get an adventure all right i had never been out of my home town till my husband joined the navy and wow i have seen/experienced so much in such a short period of time.. it all happens sooo fast, wow he'll be an e3 out of boot thats great i think my husband was e2 out of boot not for sure but i think that sounds about right.. my husband is undecided where he would like to go after this sea tour but i would like to go someplace else overseas like Italy or something since he will be on shore duty. plus, i would love for my son to experience new places so far he has seen tx, CT, GA, FL all of the states in between GA and TX and all the states between TX and WA now he has seen japan and Guam such a busy little 6 yr old haha.. oh yea i forgot about great lakes, maryland, and new york haha.
well my husband is 33, he has an assoc degree, so thats why he is E3 right out of BC. So far the navy is amazing. The community, from what I see on this site, is nothing like I've ever experienced before. I really hope we get base housing. And yes, I would love my son, who is now 9 months old, to experience different cultures.
I've seen a lot of older guys around the school here in Groton. It's a little confusing because I see them and think they must be an instructor or something and it turns out they are students like my Husband, who just turned 21 this year.
Another older one here, too! My husband will be 30 in August. (I'll be 26 in May so I'm younger but not super young.) He's getting a little fed up with a lot of the young, single kids who won't stay out of trouble...
My Husband does look older then he actually is. I'm the older one out of both of us but no one guesses it when we first meet. I'm 23 and we are 1yr 11mn apart. I got carded at the gym in the hotel we stayed at for our honeymoon because you had to be at least 16 to use the equipment 0_o
He gets so frustrated too at the people who won't grow up and act like adults. It's simply amazing what people do.
