Hello ladies! i thought it would be a good idea to make a group for Submarine girls, just because it takes a special kind of girl to be a Submarine, girlfriend, wife or fiancee :)
MamaMiri - how long did you have to wait for a house once he got his orders and got put on the list? We are going to try to get base housing when he graduates BESS sometime in July. When did he receive his orders? When do they find out what job they will be doing?
New SR. Wife- We are in Polaris Park (Townhouse style homes) and I am very happy with our house! It's 2 floors and about 1,100 sq/ft of space, and the kitchen is smaller than I'd prefer, but still definitely manageable. I do a LOT of cooking from scratch and plan to get into bread-making as soon as our stuff arrives, so that was a major concern for me, but I think it's workable. Everything is very clean and newer/updated look, with newer appliances. There is no A/C in most units but from what I understand it doesn't get very hot here, only a handful of days during the height of summer when it gets over 90F. There is plenty of room for my toddler to play, and some nice yard space in the back. We have a 2 bedroom house and the second bedroom is a decent size, it will more than do the job when we move our boy in there. There is also a fair amount of storage space in the house, on both floors. And yes, we got approval for the Navy to pay for our travel and moving expenses, we just still need to submit our receipts and weight tickets once our household goods arrive late next week. It was a little bit of a pain in the butt to get find the right information about *how* to do that, but there are a few people in the various offices who really do know their stuff so you just have to keep asking questions and be assertive about being taken care of. I definitely understand needing family around for the birth, I hope all of that goes smoothly for you! And when you do make it out here, we'll be around so we should meet up. I know how tough it can be sometimes with a newborn so please let me know if there's anything I can do to help as you get settled in or even later. Especially since I'll have to ropes mostly figured out around here by then! :)
SubWife2011- We had hardly any wait at all. Although one of his Petty Officers didn't have his facts straight and told him his orders "weren't the right ones" when he got them and that he would have to wait for the "official" ones that he would be handed on paper (rather than what was already up on Bupers), so we sat on our hands for about 3 weeks thinking we still had to wait. But then a shipmate told him he was able to get his wife out here with those same orders so he did some more asking around, showed his orders to people at Fleet and Family Support, Family Housing Welcome Center, and I can't remember the name, but the office that handles dependent travel expenses. They told him those orders were plenty fine and that we could get moving even though he wasn't quite done with BESS yet, because I was essentially "homeless", and staying with family. He did have to get the permission signed off by the Chiefs though. Anyway, he got those orders after Test 2, if I remember correctly. Maybe a little earlier. Once he got the process rolling, he told me to get packing on Tuesday of that week, I was on the road on Saturday, and he had an appointment for us at the Belfour Beatty leasing office on Monday. They had 2 units available to show that day, one in Polaris Park and one in Trident Park. We took the one in Polaris Park and got keys that same day. They actually rushed to get it ready over the weekend when they heard we were coming and it was ready half an hour before we arrived for our appointment. We had a very good experience with the Resident Specialist, she answered all of our questions and was very helpful. I was actually rather shocked that it all happened so quickly, but I'm very happy with our house! She did say that recently they have been filling up to the point where they have fewer and fewer units available at any given time (occasionally they have none and there is a wait list) but even so if you're coming in the next few months I would guess there wouldn't be a very long wait at all if any. Like I said from the time that my husband first called Housing to when we signed and got keys was barely a week. But definitely get the paperwork started as soon as he has orders just in case, don't wait around until whenever you want to show up. As far as when they get their rate, is your husband SECF? Mine got his about 3 weeks in, and I heard it usually happens around 3-4 weeks in. (I *think* that goes for other sub rates too, but don't quote me on that) I also hear that if they are more likely to get a rate if they are assertive and really sound like they want it. My hubby really wanted FT, told them that was what he really wanted to do and that's what he got.
Sharon was great to meet you guys! I will deff will need you in the months to come since we're planning on getting me there no later than Aug! So by then you probably will have Groton down! lol.. We seen some of the Base housing and my fiancee is very excited about it. I love the way they look, I had this really ugly pic in my mind like mini projects..lol.. But not at all thank God, I just need this wedding deal to be over with to get started on the moving process :)
Our Easter was a little quirky but good! We visited a church about 1.5 hour away where we know the pastor for Easter service, and in the afternoon drove a shipmate up to Boston so he could go home to visit his family. Our poor kid spent a total of about 7 hours in the car lol. We ended up stopping at a Friendley's for dinner on the way home and our son had a blowout after I changed him into the last diaper I had...thankfully there was a CVS across the street but his shirt and pants were done for so he had to ride home in just his diaper and blanket. A bit of a misadventure but hey, we were together lol!
My puppy used to eat toilet paper off of the roll like it was a fruit rollup. And then he ate a hole in the run. And then he ate the arm of the couch....
Hello everyone! I haven't been on this site since my husband graduated boot camp and now he is on his very first patrol! This is all so new and it came so quick! I have a question for anyone willing to answer or give feed back. I heard that with Boomers (I think that is what they are called, the 3 months out at a time) that they typically are able to "spend more time" with family. I understand that in any branch of the military there will always be separation but I was just curious as to what I can expect. Thank you =)
From what I have been told because Boomers have a much more set schedule of deployment (plus 3 months is nice and short, so they are not gone for so long at a time!), it tends to be nice for families since it's predictable.
my hubs was on a boomer, but i just wanted to say yes they are 3 months out 3 months in but everything can change they can be out up to 4 months i know my hubs did do a 4 almost 5 monther when he was on a boomer.. i have never heard of a boomer being in for 7 months it is always 3 months out 3 months in. now if they are in dry dock and getting some major over haul then they can be in for that long lol.. my hubs is on a fast attack now, we like it so far... fast attacks get so much bad rep from their schedules but there are some plus sides i have no complaints about the communication unlike on boomers communication is soooo up in the air.. i went a complete 3 months without hearing a word from my hubs, then he was knocking at my door lol. i love the pier side homecomings never had 1 while he was boomer. oh and skyping is the best ;).. so there are pros and cons on either type of sub you just gotta make the best out of it.
then the mus be doing some work.. they are never in port for that long unless work is being done.. wow the maryland i wonder if my husbands friend is still on that boat lol sorry thinking to myself.. that is so awesome your hubs is going to the west virginia, a lot of hard times but lots of good memories on that boat.
Hey everyone, hubby just graduated bootcamp, one step closer to getting our orders. He's going to VA next week for CS school, then off to CT for sub school. How do your husbands handle going from family life to sub life? I'm worried about my husband adjusting.
I am a submarine mom and my son is being deployed for the first time. Any advice? I would really appreciate the help! He is a CTT and is not giving me any info.
congrats to your son on the deployment hope he has fun and stays safe.. now as for advice, are you looking for advice for you or for your son? i wish him luck and hope he comes home soon...
congrats to all who's sailors advanced and sorry to those who's sailors did not there is always next cycle keep your chin up and continue to work hard :)
i just wanted to say that cause they learn way more out to sea but he is a MT so i dont know about his rate to really say but i know my hubs being a ST it is best for him to go out. kind of ssad he'll be up for re-enlistment by the time the sub is ready to go out hope this doesnt hurt him in the future for advancment :/
there should be a travel place you can go to, to get good deals.. go to fleet and family they should be able to tell you where the little travel place is i forgot what it was called i am sure if i saw this question yesterday i would have remembered lol..
hello everyone! i am making a military cookbook with a friend of mine down here. we made a facebook page - so feel free to go "like" it!! make sure you read the info section, and send in your submissions to militarywivescookbook@yahoo.com!

My boyfriend just got his rate today! He's officially a FT! I'm so excited for him, that was his first choice! He's going to try to be on a boomer at Kistap, Washington. :)
Hey everybody! My husband just got done with A-School and is now headed to sub school. We're both excited... a little bit closer to him coming home. I have a question, what are your thoughts on women being allowed on subs?
Honestly I for both a comfort and a safty levle don't want women on a sub just cuz it is such close cordors I think they are completly capable but that's a long time.in close area the subs just don't have the space
I'm sure this question has been asked 1,000 times, but I'm a little unclear on how this all works. My fiancee and I are getting married next month while he is finishing up sub school in Groton. After he's done in Groton he'll be heading to Georgia to finish up A school. Is it possible for me to live either on or off base with him while he is in school? Or do we have to wait until he finishes school?
I have no problem with women being on subs. If a man is going to cheat or break regulations, he will do it anywhere. It's not the presence of women (no matter how "close quarters" it is or not) that causes men to lose their minds and cheat or sleep with a female Sailor/Officer. It is their own integrity, or lack thereof. Before there were women on surface ships, men slept with women in port. Same with subs. Not to mention, if a woman on a sub chooses to sleep with a man, she is just as responsible. Our ability to reason, man or woman, doesn't (and shouldn't!) evaporate just because we are in a small, closed environment. Male and female Sailors have a job to do and they are perfectly capable of doing it without indiscretion. I don't think women should be denied jobs for which they are qualified because of what my husband and the other guys on base call "sh*tbags". Or even because we believe that men are fundamentally animals who are not capable of self-control. Ultimately that's not fair to men, either.
Littlemiss, I'm not sure about rates other than SECF, but basically your Sailor has to be in school in one location for at least 6 months in order for the Navy to move you. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember hearing that if they have to move on to GA for A-school, then their school isn't long enough for you to move with him. Hopefully you'll find more specific information!
Its not the men cheating. That worries me there are women raped in the armed services. Not to say it happens all the time.but it does not all.men even in the navy are good honorable.men.and that is sad but true. On a ship there is more room they can put space between bothersome men but on a sub there is no way to.put space between them and what they confided a predetor.
True, it happens everywhere and a sub is no different, but on the other hand just as it's hard to put distance between people on a sub, on the flip side you are also never truly alone. If you yell, several people will hear. The boat never sleeps, with crews rotating on 18 hour days- 6 hours to work, 6 hours "free", 6 hours to sleep. The Navy also does not take sexual harassment or assault lightly, at all. I don't know where your Sailor is in training but my husband has already gone through more than one brief on sexual harassment in the 5 months he's been in Groton. Anyone who instigates something like that will get the book thrown at them.
There have been women on subs it happens and it is more difficult. I trust my man I just when u mix men and women there is almost always problems. Women are not all innocent and things get taken to far. Its human nature. Its gonna happen I may not like it but it already is happening . Its just asking for trouble tho
wow it has been a whileee since I have been on here I hope every one is doing well :) I just wanted to share :)Navy Wives and SOs I am starting a Pen Pal program on USN Sisterhood (on facebookhttp://www.facebook.com/media/albums/?id=1847299381#!/groups/190939...) In honor of Military spouse day..
Silent Patriot
A woman for all season, a woman for today
She stands to meet all the challenges
And grows along the way
Her life is not an easy one
With many loads to bear
But she proudly serves her husband
And the uniform he wears
Although she didn’t take the oath
To preserve democracy
She’s there each day on the home front
To keep our country free
She’s foreign-born or a country girl
Diversity you will find
But to be a military wife,
It takes a special kind
She’s one who keeps on going
Through adversity and pain
She’s the steady strong foundation
When nothing stays the same
She’s the one who sheds a tear
As Old Glory passes by
But couldn’t give an answer
If you were to ask her why?
Throughout the years she marches on
Through tears and joy and strife
She’s America’s unsung hero ~
She’s a military wife
