Navy Reserve Moms

For anyone who has a Sailor in the Reserves. Lets talk...
  • diane {Shawns mom}

    hi all, just reading all the comments below,first and foremost....YOur sons daughters are awesome.JUst for have the foresight to join during this times.
    Ok..here I go..
    My son is a reserve but in a program.{TAR} which is now FTS...TAR stands for total active reserves, don't ask me to remember what the heck FTS stands for..I will have to go and research..Basically....Shawn{my son-not obviously enough from my screen name -right} gets all benefits of an "fully activite" sailor but will remain "stateside" Shawn has no desire to be "stationed" overseas, ex: Japan-/Anyway....don't ask me cause I do not see much difference, see shawn is going on an 8 month deployment in Oct, and his first child is due in Dec.

    Anyway enough of my self pity...I love reading everyones stories...
    what a great group...
    Thanks

    Hello Ladies,
    I also have a son in the selective reserves....whatever that means?? He is presently in GL attending corpsman school and slated to graduate in Nov. From what he understands from processing/classification on Wed. he is to finish A school and then will come home to do his weekends and summers. It is not in his contract to do the marine training as he thought so I guess unless the military can change his contract he won't be deployed. He was a little disappointed but is glad to be able to rejoin his family that misses him terribly. He plans on starting college in the spring unless the Navy has some other plans for him. I have mixed emotions about all of this but I am thrilled to have him coming home. Does anyone have a similar situation? I would love to hear about it.

    I spoke to shawn..and shawn did say that going from reserve to active..you will get a nice bonus...but be careful.
    and make sure you do it right!!
    I am going to have to pick his brain. Cause the program his is in TAR..he said the bad out weighs the good but he didn't say WHAT??? but his program and to get in it..depends on the job you chose.
    He is happy...his ship assignment is exactly what he was looking for{closer to home-would of been nice but great}
    but the more I read it seems that some of the reservist want to go active..why do you think??

    Welcome Tammy!!!

    Hi everyone, My son Michael graduated from A school in Gulfport 11/4 -any he is home now, I am very thankful to have him home, especially for the holidays. He has been home for a couple of weeks and hasn't found a job yet.I gues this will be somewhat difficult because he seems to think that he will probably get deployed in a couple of months. He is a seabee reservist. Anyway I just want to wish everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving- and my prayers especially for those whose children can't be with them for the holidays, and for the sailors and all of the military who are missing home today.

    Hi, I am also so happy there is a place for "reservist" family to share. My son came home after A school(his A school was in Cal.) He was home for almost a year, then he was sent to Gulfport, Miss. in June '08, from there he was deployed to Iraq, in Aug. of 08, and was told it was an 18 month deployment, but he has kind of been hinting it may be a shorter stay, but says he can't say much. He is a Seabee.

    Hi Angie, It was very difficult for my son also, he also missed the routine, He also struggled with temporary jobs, that were not very challenging. What did help Marc, is that he is a volunteer firefighter in our town, and he is really dedicated to that, he is a trainer or new fire dept. recruits. I hear you, I am also very proud of my son(and he doesn't like me to talk about him either), he has been firefighter of the year 3 years in a row, and was chosen by his chief to attend the National Fire Academy in Maryland 2x.( Marc was a "unit leader" in boot camp, carried their division flag, and also graduated with distinction from A school!) My son wouldn't wear his uniform either when he was home, and we also got questions about what he was "doing with his life", I also could not stand by and not say that he is in the Navy, but he always added "Mom, I'm not the only one", but basically we just kept telling him how fortunate we were to have him home for almost a year! Now, he is doing what is trained to do, and he
    is really glad to be serving our country.
    Please don't apologize, I am here anytime you need to "dump", or just vent!

    Hi Betty in Az. Welcome! Where is your sailor?
  • Lois C T(momma T)

    Thanks Jackie, good to know!

    Isn't the box with all of their clothes the most horrible thing? I cryed for hours after i recived it! I think we should have been warned about it. Just hang in there it does get alittle easier. My son Michael is home from A school . He is a seabee in the reserves. He can't find a job, but he will probably be leaving in a couple of months- I really thing that he misses the structure, I don't even know how I can help him. Right now I am just glad he is home for Christmas.
  • Debi (Ship 9 Div 126)

    Michael is a seabee builder- unfortunatly there isn't a construction work going on, he does go to the gym and he tries to keep busy. I think he is probably fine it's just me that feels bad for him.
    Carol, at least your son can hopefully find a job as a mechanic- tell him to check out a pep boys or tire place. Sometime they have guy there to do mechanic work also.

    Great story Jackie!

    Hi ladies, my son is a reservist, he is a CM (construction mechanic) in Iraq right now. His unit was activated in May of "08. he went to Miss. (Gulfport) for training, and to Iraq in August. He is relatively safe (he tells me) he is on a base. He is also sorry he didn't go active Navy (instead of reserves) I know he will be paid for 30 days after he returns home, and will also have benefits. He was also paid for 30 days after A school??? Good luck to your son!

    Hi Leisa, for my son it is not that he doesn't want to come home. He just had such a hard time finding a job that he likes and makes decent money.And, he does enjoy what he is doing now and realizes it's job security, good pay, and early retirement!!!!
