They as in the airlines or RDCs ?
  • diannep

They send their seabags and garment bags through checked luggage.  They are pretty heavy.  And they are also packed pretty full!  Keep that in mind if you are thinking that they can SQUEEZE more in there.  Might be better to mail them "goodies" after they arrive at schools.  They can have a few things in their carryon black backpack if you bring one for them, but the airlines rules would apply on the liquids, etc.
  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

Thanks Diannep. I was wondering if they were allowed to check the black bag. Better off sending liquids.
  • Sherri (mom of Kirsten)

Got my "sailor" call today. I'm so proud of her and all that she has accomplished. Can't wait to get there and hug her.
  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

    Yay Congrats!
  • lisap

we just got a 20 minute call--it was great! He is happy, but tired after being up for 40 hours--did I hear him right on that?
  • Proud Mom

Just got our sailor call!  It was so good to hear my son's voice... and my husband called my cell about one minute later, so I put it on speaker phone so he could hear him too.  We can't wait until Friday!
  • SSMom

Just got our I'm a Sailor call!  We are sooo proud! Is it Friday yet???????
  • Jean-9 ship07div113

I just got our call!!  He said that he is the Petty Officer for the ship's hold.  I am SO proud of him!!

Congratulations to all the recruits and families!!

  • DebbieRN

I also got the I have a Sailor call.  He graduated number 2 in his class!!! Way to go:-) I got to talk to him for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  • diannep

Jean:  CORRECTION:  Congrats to all of the SAILORS and families!  HOOYAH!
  • diannep

navywife:  Hmmm....not sure about checking the black bag...they probably would have to pay for it since it is not Navy-issued so Navy wouldn't pay.  Just guessing here...but I would imagine Navy had paid for their 2 Navy-issued bags....beyond that, they're probably on their own.
  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

    So what's your recommendation dianne?

Just send the stuff he can't carry on? Or stuff it in the navy issue bag?
  • hunt1125

I got the I am a sailor call this afternoon. I am so happy. I just wish i wasn't at work so that i could have talked to him longer.
  • Jean-9 ship07div113

No disrespect intended!  Correction noted.  That's right We do have sailors now and no longer recruits!! sorry

  • jenine(Ship 07 Div114)

Got my "I'm a Sailor" call this afternoon...funny that he began the conversation with what time he woke up yesterday...he literally had to work his way through the story before he said the words "this morning maybe around 8:30, I became a Sailor"...His Dad and I were about holding our breath waiting for those words!!! HOOYAH for all of our new SAILORS!!!

  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

That's cute.... I like your story.
  • MissingSailorD (Ship 07 Div 109)

jenine - lol my sailor did the same thing.. after 5 minutes of conversation, he said, "Oh, I'm a sailor by the way" :)
  • Gwynhwyfar

Mine decided to play games and tell me he had 'bad news' -- that I was going to have to travel out to Great Lakes for Friday.

*headdesks* Of course, he drew it out to make me actually scared!!!

  • jenine(Ship 07 Div114)

That makes me feel better that your SAILORS did the same thing! After all the anticipation of "the call" and the last two months....I'm drained!! I feel like knowing my son was going through Battlestations last night drained ME!! Guess I better "recharge" for my trip to Great Lakes! Hope everyone has safe travels! See you there!

  • diannep

navywife:  If you meet him at the airport, see if he can fit any of the liquids, etc in his seabag.  If not, you can send them later.  He may want to carry on the black backpack with things in it like cell, laptop, a few civilian clothes, etc.
  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

    Thanks. Good idea.

    Good morning all!

Starting first leg of my traveling adventure to Great Lakes!

Safe travels for all. Have a wonderful day!!!!!

Got the call from my SAILOR yesterday afternoon!  He sounded good but tired after being up for 36hrs.  He asked that I bring his deer jerky this weekend :)
  • SSMom

There is actually an organized event going on right now called Red Fridays. If you are a facebooker, type Red Friday into the search and join the "party". Basically we have been encouraged to wear red every Friday, March 18 to July 15 to show support for all our men and women in all branches of the military.

  • diannep

Congrats to all of the sailors of 3/25, safe travel, and have a wonderful PIR experience!
  • Jean-9 ship07div113

  • SuSu( Ship 07/Div 109)

I have contacted the Ramada Inn to give them the approx number for MeetNGreet.  Cant wait to see all of you tomorrow and my son on Friday.  From what I can read we will all be wearing RED on Friday.  Sounds Great To Me.  I appreciate the list of items to bring that helps alot.  Flying out in the morning first thing, starting to pack.  Everyone have a safe trip.  Leaving 85 degrees to 30 degrees but it is worth every minute of it
  • MissingSailorD (Ship 07 Div 109)

Elizabeth, I'll have some stories to tell you about our road trip up here! I typed you a message from our hotel room last night but right as I finished it something happened and it was gone!! Guess I'm not used to this laptop! I'll have to redo it! This is so exciting just as you said it would be!

  • mrshdge (SHIP 07 DIV 113)

Can you guys believe I left my PIR ribbons at the house...
  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

    Hi guys!

I am so excited I can't even sit straight!!!

My hunny's grandma is here for PIR tomorrow and we have a wheelchair.

Anyone know how the process works with a wheelchair?  We are taking the shuttle from the Residence Inn to base.

Also where is the closest place to drill hall?  Shuttle or drive in?

  • jim'scupcake

Hi 3-25-11 Moms.  Congratulations to both you and your Sailors!!  Good job!

I am in the 4-8 PIR Group.  I am hoping you guys could post here where you stayed and any hints you may have for us when we get to Chicago.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know you are all having a wonderful time!  Congratulations again!

  • jenine(Ship 07 Div114)

We're staying at The Residence Inn in Waukegan. Very nice. And we used the shuttle from there to PIR and back and that worked out well...Your day is coming soon! Get ready for a special time with your Sailor!
  • Jean-9 ship07div113

We are staying at the Residence Inn too.  It has been nice and it's relatively close to the base.

Anyone who lives in the VA Beach/Norfolk area. There is a group of us planning on meeting one day for lunch (shooting for Thursday) the last week of April. I will be there that week for spring break. We would love to meet as many other moms/families etc as possible for lunch one day. If you have a sailor there and they could possible come that would be awesome. If you are in that area and would like to join us please let me know. Send me a private message with your name and number. We will keep the time and place in private message as well. Thanks
  • Gwynhwyfar

I'm going to third the support for The Residence Inn in Waukegan -- reasonable prices, great location -- my room was wonderful and clean. I got a studio so I had a kitchenette so I could make my husband the homemade mac and cheese that he kept requesting.

The bonus for me was that I could bring the dog rather than kenneling her for less than the cost that kenneling her would have been. Coming back from the airport today after watching him board a plane was a lot better with her here than I think it would have been without!

  • Jean-9 ship07div113

The weekend is over and our sailor is now in A school.  Now we wait for another 14 weeks until we get to see him again.  At least we get to communicate via cell phone and internet.

  • davysnavywife (Groton CT)

    Hi everyone.
My last official post in this group. I will be lurking around subs and Groton CT now lol.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the support you all have been so awesome.

Ashley Jennifer and Annie it was fun sitting with you at graduation! And nice meeting you Sherri.

Keep in touch and good luck to all of you.

I had an amazing time with my husband. He made it safe to CT just wish we had more time.

I give lots of support to the residence inn they were awesome.

Take care ladies and hope to keep in touch!
  • jenine(Ship 07 Div114)

Proud momma, my son went to Pensacola!!!

  • lisap

My son is also in Pensacola at Corey Field.

Jenine--I think we met at O'Hare as the boys were boarding the plane--I was the mom from NY.

I also believe our sons are in the same barrack. They sound pretty happy there!

  • jenine(Ship 07 Div114)

Yes, lisap, we did meet! I felt so bad for crying when I said good bye to my son when you said you lived in New York and I'm so close to Pensacola...I guess it wasn't the weekend of visiting that we had hoped for with them being grad & go but still appreciated what we had..And yes, my son sounds pretty happy too! I  knew that two of the guys that flew with him are in the room with him...so your son is one of them? Yay! I hope to visit as soon as my son says it's ok! I sure hope your family is able to visit Pensacola too...I think you'll like it ;)

  • SuSu( Ship 07/Div 109)

My son has also gone to Pensacola.  His roomy's family is from NY.  I am sure they all went together and mostly likely know each other.  He has stated they really like it there, weather is great and they are learning their way around
