thanks i called them today and they said all i needed was the form letter with the grad info on it
  • Sheryl30

My sister and her family stayed at the Ramada when her daughter went to boot camp in 2009. She said the restaurant is great!  We stayed in a nearby hotel but met them there that day.  We're staying there for our son's PIR on May 6
  • annamichael

Has anyone heard of Hotel Indigo? It's in Vernon Hills, about 16 miles from RTC.
  • annamichael

Do you think it would be a BIG deal parking at a hotel that does have a shuttle, just to use the shuttle? Or is that too wrong? haha

Kathy, my SR's PIR date is April 22th.. How was the weather when you went May 7th?

  • annamichael

Hahaha.. didn't think of that! Thanks Maggie!

I live in NC.. for the next week 70s and 80s.. Oh, I know he misses this!

  • Carol(ship12 Div.091)

subwife, we stayed at the Navy Lodge.  You do not have to have military ID.  When you make reservations ( I called the central reservation number on their website.) they will ask for a credit card and also the name of your SR.  At some point during your stay they ask that the SR stop at the desk and show their ID.  It wa a very simple process.
  • CorpsmansGirl08 (station:GL,IL)

okay i have a question for everyone whos been to PIR! I am riding the Amtrak to Union Station in chicago..I mapquested it to my hotel and its about an hour away.... does anyone know what taxi would take me an hour up to geat lakes???
  • cajunldr(ship 03 Div 086)

@ Corpsmansgirl08 - look above at the links, the one titled "recommended lists of Taxi's, rental cars and shuttle services"  That should give you something to start with.  There is also a gentleman named "Sarge" that some have used and been very satisfied with, you might try him also. His info in in some of the post on that section also. You will love PIR!!!
  • CorpsmansGirl08 (station:GL,IL)

thank you cajunldr!!!! I will i have read all the reviews on sarge will definately be calling him closer to PIR to get details!! :D I know I will love PIR because i will FINALLY get too see my baby!!!!!! Shaved head and all! :D I can't wait!
  • annamichael

Speaking of their shaved head.. Until the day they get of out the Navy, if they do, do they have to continually get the SAME haircut? Just curious. Will they always have to get it so often?

I will also be calling "Sarge".. He is getting tons of business thanks to this site :)
  • CorpsmansGirl08 (station:GL,IL)

wow.....they are very specific about their hair!!! LOL

  • annamichael

I know! That's a lot of info.. Thanks Lady!!
  • Mamastarr Ship 11 DIV 127

Our PIR was April 8. Outstanding! As an Army brat myself and mother of 3 boys, I thought I had some idea of what to expect. Let me tell you, Nothing can prepare you for what you will experience. Best analogy I can think of is childbirth. You hear others advice and experience and you educate yourself, but until you actually go thru it, you truly have no clue. What an amazing experience for our Sailor and our entire family. Thank you RTC! Bravo Zulu ~
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Call the Navy Lodge and ask them. If you ahve your car with you you are not far from two malls. Also bring a sweater for her for PIR It's indoor and they kept it cool for our June PIR. You might want to sit on teh sweater 'cause it metal blecher seating. Just a thought.

I think this is the site for the mall www.gurneemills.com

  • annamichael

What is a sailor's homeport? Is this like where they are stationed? My SR graduates boot camp in 6 days. (!!!!) And some people on his PIR groups page were talking about their homeport. If someone knows anything about this, please explain. I'm a little confused. Thanks!
  • WandaG

Hi everyone! I'm new to this group. I tried asking this question in two other groups but no one is responding so I thought I'd try this group.
Does anyone recommend purchasing the PIR graduation video? Is it worth purchasing? It would be nice if we could see our sailor in the video. My daughter is considering joining the drill team in bootcamp. Thanks in advance.
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Ok,  I'm beginning to question my decision on staying at the Ramada for PIR 5/13.  I keep seeing posts and comments about how the hotel smelled and had "that musty, smokey smell".  Not sure what to do.  I wanted to stay there because of the meet and greet, but if it is really that bad of a problem, I don't want to stay there.  Any ideas?
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Wanda- Lots say yes to teh video. My Sailor did not. He felt that the dvd wouldn't be good when his kids would go to try and watch it. Since VHS is gone and DVD is now going Blue ray LOL. It's not really Drill team it's a 900 division. They pick you if you have the skills. My son was in a 900 and played Tuba for 7 years before going to boot camp. Which BTW he loved the 900 division.

Mama C- We stayed at Navy lodge and only went over to the M&G Thursday night. One of teh other moms in our div stayed at that hotel adn had 2 rooms. She said she will never stay there if she has to be in Great Lakes. Just make sure you leave whatever hotel by 6-15 to get to base for PIR. We asked the local NEX what time they recommend and they told us that.

CONGRATS! and now go buy your Blue Candle adn keep it burning for Battle Stations. :D

Hope I helped both of you with my answers.

  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

LMC - I may change my hotel plans.  I guess I better get on it to make any changes now.  Thanks for the help.  Blue Candle?  What's that all about and where do you buy them?

  • WandaG

LMC-Thanks for responding. I'm sorry is the video on vhs or dvd? Yeah, I wasn't sure of all the ins and outs of the drill team. I heard about the band. My daughter used to play the piccolo and the flute in high school. Thanks for the info about the 900 division.
  • SubWife2011

    the video is on DVD
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Any Blue Candle. Go under event and you will see about Blue Candles. :D

And you're welcome. Oh and the Division Shirts make sure you ahve extra $$ on you for those. Sadly the Division my son was in they didn't have extras there that day so I still have to order those.

  • WandaG

LMC... do the sailors create their own flags that go on the division shirts? I would love to order a division shirt when the time comes and wear it to the PIR. I don't think I would need to order for my daughter. I believe the sailors order their own, correct?
  • decarp

can anyone tell me if your sailor is allowed to take there cellphone and laptop to a school he will be a saturday depart. thanks
  • SubWife2011

I'm pretty sure you can give them that stuff at the airport......at least that is what I was told.
  • SubWife2011

Wanda~yes they do design their own flags.
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Wanda- You can't get the shirts til after PIR. Yes, each division designs their own shirts so the drawings are all different.

FYI a sibling worn her sisters division shirt to school and got in trouble because there was a skull on it. Make sure if worn to a school you let them know It is in support of the US NAVY division. Poor sibling went from proud to sad. The mom was able to "discuss" the shirt after with the school staffing and she is now allowed to wear it.

Decarp: Is he staying at GL or flying out? for my son he was returning to his BC bed for a few more days and could NOT take anything back with him. Since we have At&T he put his sim card in his wallet. When he got to P'cola Fl he picked up a cheap pay as you go At&t phone popped his sim card in and was up and going with no problem. I mailed him he real phone after that, but teh pre paid worked from teh time being. He brought a laptop in the NEX because it was cheaper then us buying one here and shipping it.  Hope that helps.

  • WandaG

LMC, I thought we order them from Poseidon Sportswear. It says they put your sailor's design flag on the back of the shirt. You must include you sailors division number. The shirts are ordered pre-graduation.
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

The SR orders them. Well that is how my son did it.
  • WandaG

How to order a Division t shirt
    Comment by Craig
If you want a true division t-shirt, the same as your sailors will have for graduation, the company that makes them is Poseidon Sportswear. You can call Caryle at at 972-347-6655. If they don't answer, they're probably in the back of the warehouse packing orders for the next graduating group, or you can leave a message. Or, you can email them at navytees@gmail.com.
    Here is the link below:

Hopefully, this will be helpful for anyone who is interested in their sailor's division shirt.
  • FREEBIRD6819 OCT 8TH BOOTCAMP

My son went on 4/18 still not sure when he is graduating .. but I have recieved excellent information from this sight//.. flying into milwaukee .. its cheaper.. as far as a hotel.. any good ideas>> heard the ramada has a smell.. but wanna be close so we can go to meet and greet..
  • WandaG

Freebird, I hear nothing but good things about the Residence Inn in Waukegan. Its minutes away from the base and you can also arrange for a shuttle to pick you up at the hotel and drop you off at the base as well. Also, they have a free breakfast and free dinner Mon thru Thurs. All rooms have kitchens and I heard the staff is very nice.
  • WandaG

Freebird, if you look our comment wall, the section called "discussion forum" you will see a discussion titled "recommended places to stay". Click on that and you will read about other area hotels and what others have to say about them. Hope that helps.
  • Danyelle, Navy Wife :)

Are there any good Japanese Steakhouses near RTC? My husband mentioned really wanted to eat something like that. Hibachi
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

NorthBrook mall have a place kinda like what you're looking for but not the same.
  • ab'smom

Does anyone know if we're allowed to bring a camcorder to the ceremony?
  • ab'smom

    Thank you Dayciavu!
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

WandaG and Freebird - Just changed my hotel reservations from Ramada to Residence Inn - Waukegan.  Can't wait for PIR 5/13!
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Decided to switch to Residence Inn cuz we got a suite over a room with 2 beds, plus a free dinner Thursday night!  Can hardly wait!
  • WandaG

Mama C- the suite sounds awesome! Congrats and enjoy the graduation!!!
  • Sherri0210 PIR 4/22(Ship 3/148)

I posted this in the discussions too...

Here is my two cents on my PIR experience.  We drove up to Great Lakes on Thursday- Hwy 294 has 3 tolls to go through ($3.00).  We did not attend the meet and greet at the Ramada, so I cannot comment on that.  We brought signs to hang in the room, so he would be surprised when he came in.  We also brought all kinds of snacks and drinks to have in the room.  We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lake Forest.  Right off the highway… easy to get on and off the highway.  One toll to the base $0.50.  Close to a lot of restaurants (drive), shopping and a mall. Very large hotel for a Hilton Garden, nice indoor pool and hot tub.  Room rate was $79 per night for Navy Grad Package.  I am an expert traveler, I travel 3 times a month and this is as good as any room I usually stay in and I would stay there again-highly recommended.  Right next to one of the Residence Inn’s (same parking lot).  The hotel had a breakfast buffet and made to order breakfast- not sure if included in price of room, or if we got it because of my level of membership- but I would inquire about it.  Not crowed and very laid back hotel.  We took the advice of others and took a cab (Sarge) to the PIR.  He was very helpful and informative.  It was $20 dollars one way for 4 adults and one child.  We were picked up at 6:15 am and got to the PIR at 6:30-6:45.  Plenty early!!!  We actually could have arrived later, but I was so anxious to get there.  Sat in the middle of the lower bleachers- I think all seats are great, as long as a 6’5” person doesn’t sit directly in front of you.  We bought the three kids that were with us sailor hats when we arrived ($5 each).  We also brought coloring books and sticker books to keep them busy.  The family that was with us forgot their birth certificates for the little ones, and still got in with out any problems.  Two adults were not on the list and were seated with the one on the list without issue.  PIR was amazing!!!  Even with a long camera lens, pictures did not turn out great.  But that was not a big deal to me.  The ceremony is over exactly at 10:30, so around 10:15 gather your things, because it is a mad stampede when liberty is called.

My Sailor was staying in Great Lakes, so we were able to spend 45 minutes with him after grad, before he had to check in.  We all walked over to the NEX and had lunch with him.  I ordered the DVD before lunch, because you can only order it after grad.  I did not shop at the NEX- it was insanely crowded!!!  When we were done, we walked back to the cab area- and grabbed any cab back to the hotel to wait for our sailor to call.  He finally called around 2:30pm.  Make sure they have money on their calling card to call you when they are ready.  Where you pick your sailor up is completely different than the PIR.  It is East on Buckley at the Visitors Center.  You wait out there, until they all march up to be released.  Everyone claps, another moment you will tear up.  If you park in the visitor’s lot, you do not need your pass.  They CAN have their cells phones back at this point and even take them back to the base… and laptops.  There is NO internet on base so you may need an air card or use your cell phone as a modem.  We went back to the hotel and went to dinner that night at TRATTORIA POMIGLIANO LIBERTYVILLE IL, it was just okay.  Had better Italian and service elsewhere.  For 11 people food and cocktails was $227 with tip.  We took our sailor back before 8:30pm, since we were uncertain about the line of cars.  They all had to be back by 8:45!!!  Very, Very hard to find barracks on the base- not much lighting and the map was awful!  So give yourself extra time the first night.

They can leave Saturday morning as early as 4 am and my sailor wanted to picked up ASAP.  So we picked him up at 4:30- we love that kidJ.  On Saturday and Sunday they will meet you at the visitor center and then you WILL need your pass to get on the base.  Because you drive them back to their barracks and someone has to sign the sailor out!  The person who returns him, can be different.  It is really an awesome moment to see them salute to enter the barracks.  Everyone should witness this!  We went back to the hotel and my sailor passed out.  Ate brunch at hotel, served until noon!  We also made a trip to best buy to get a new laptop!  That night we went to Kona Grill, since Cheesecake Factory was an hour wait (right next to each other).  This dinner was one of the best meals we had there!  Service and food was awesome!  We returned our sailor on time!

Sunday morning we picked our sailor up early again at 5:30 am and had a late breakfast and took lots of pictures.  We did not sightsee, which I left up to my sailor!  I would rather spend the time talking which he did a lot of, than go to the city.  On Sunday the NEX at the training center is open 9-5, so we drove back over and did some shopping.  We all were allowed to shop!!!  Less crowed than after graduation.  I am glad we waited and lots of Navy Mom t-shirts and items.  We then went to dinner Sunday night at PF Changs- always good and returned our sailor and said our final tearful good-byes at 8:45pm.  I would recommend staying as late as you can on Sunday.  We left for home on Monday!  I would have felt terrible if we did not stay late.  On the way home, I was able to have Chicago Pizza GIORDANO'S very good salads and pizza.

One last detail… there is a program called RAP.  It gives your sailor 5 extra days at home if they work at the recruiter office when they come home.  Have your sailor talk to his recruiter to set it up!

I made some really great friends on N4M’s, but unfortunately due to wanting to spend every moment with my sailor, I did not get to meet many!

I will remember this weekend the rest of my life.  It was the most special time.  I saw my son grow from a boy to a man.  I have never seen him so happy to be done with basic and to embark on his future!

  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

Thanks SO MUCH for all the information, Sherri0210!  My sailor doesn't leave for boot camp until September 6, but I am already planning the trip for his graduation (gotta have a budget!) and I am one of those people that like to know exactly what to expect since I am a control freak.  This has more info in  it than anything else I have seen and it helped a lot!
  • WandaG

Sherri0210-thanks for sharing your information. That is very helpful.
  • Sherri0210 PIR 4/22(Ship 3/148)

No problem:)  If you have any questions- message me and I will tell you what I know!!!  I am a control freak too!  Enjoy your visits!
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

I've got a question - I've seen different posts regarding Graduation Gifts and such.  Do most families buy their newly appointed Sailors Grad Gifts?  I've seen posts on Grad Boxes, Garment Bags, etc.

To be honest, I've just been trying to keep my head on these next couple of weeks and trying to prepare for the trip and the ceremony itself.  The only thing I know for sure he wants is new underwear and a good cup of coffee!  He hasn't mentioned wanting or needing anything else.

    What are your thoughts?

  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Thanks Peachy!  I was thinking that way, but you never know.  My SR has most everything he could need or want (except comfy undies!).  Thanks for the advice.  I'm so looking foward to seeing him!
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Mama C- I agree with Life. your going to PIR is the gift. That weekend of your time is what they so love. Besides you're gonna be mailig lots of care packs to him during his Navy time so in the end it balances out. Remember he can't take the new undies back to the boot camp barracks. Do you know his duty station yet? You might want to start your first care package at home and as soon as you have an address you'll be ready to mail it.
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

LMC - Yes, I did know that undies can't go back to the barracks, but I intended to give them to him at the airport, maybe.  Of course, they would be wrapped or in a bag so not to make it obvious what they were!

Yes, I do know where he'll go for A School - Goose Creek, I believe - South Carolina.  He's an EM Nuke.

I will, however, make sure I have Starbucks and creamer for our hotel room!  He's really wanting a GOOD cup of coffee!  I guess it's pretty bad at RTC.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies.  Have an awesome day!  We're finally seeing sun today and amazingly enough.....no rain!  Blessings!

  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Glad you know. some kids tried to take things back to BC barracks and well it's a no go. My son didn't go to his A school until the follwing Tues. so we didn't get to do the airport there with him.

Bring a pair of shorts and tshrt for him to hang in the hotel room. Mine didn't want to change his clothes but after napping he had a few wrinkles. He and 2 buddies did take showers in the room, one at a time and all had big smiles after that.

  • WandaG

I just wanted to share with everyone that I ordered some Proud Navy Mom t-shirts from Cafe Press for the first time and received them today. They are nice but were a little snug. So I called to exchange them for a larger size. Check this out... the rep told me since this was my first time ordering, as a courtesy, I will not need to send the shirts I have back and they will send me the replacements at no cost to me. Free shipping as well. Is that amazing??!!! Talk about awesome customer service. :o)
