I am new - just approved today!

My daughter is currently at the airport waiting her flight to Great Lakes.....

    Need help and support!!!
  • sailormom

Onedavsoon, You have my help and support. My son graduated June 3rd. I know how you feel, it's a really emotional time. But you will get through it. It helped me to just write lots of letters to my son, it made me feel close to him. I only received 2 phone calls from him during his bootcamp. So it was hard. But try and remember this, she is doing an amazing thing for our country and for her. My son said that bootcamp was the hardest thing he has ever done, but he is so happy he did it.

  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Onedaysoon- your name now has a new meaning. it means: onedaysoon I'll see my sailor :D HUGS! to you.

You know what happened: you raised a child who is willing to serve for all of us here. You have a daughter who feels strong enough to leave the nest. Hey isn't it a moms job to raise her children to go on and find a life of their own and not what Mommy wants them to do.  Congrats on your job as Mommy being a successful job. HUGS!!!!!!!

  • MNSunshine

Welcome Onedaysoon.  I was in your shoes the beginning of May.  This week my son is scheduled for Battlestations.  I'll be heading to his gradation next week.  At first the time went by really slow.  It was better for me once I received his mailing address.  I've written to him EVERY day and plan to do so until I see him for graduation (PIR).  I only talked to him once for 7 minutes, but it was awesome.  One day very soon, you will be looking back on the entire experience.  Hang in there and hand out here -- it helps!
  • smcfar92

What to wear to the PIR is basically a personal choice. I personally felt that it was a special and military ceremony. Therefore, I feel business casual is acceptable - something like collared shirt/slacks for men and dress, skirt, slacks for women. Comfortable shoes. I did see some girls (probably girlfriends) dressed like they were heading to the clubs and some dressed in ripped jeans and holes in the tshirts. So, wear what you are comfortable in. The weather is unpredictable. Maybe bring a lightweight sweater and umbrella to GL.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Welcome Onedaysoon!  I'm in the same "timeframe" as MNSunshine.  I've been writing a letter a day since the day my SR left for BC.  Once I had the address, then the bunch that was saved up got sent in one batch.  Letters are a lifeline for the SR's and they can't get enough.  You won't hear anything for at least 3 weeks - except for the Form Letter and Kid In A Box.  Don't fret - this is normal (and also the hardest part of BC for both you and your SR).  They do miracles at RTC turning our kids into confident, competent adults.  Be sure to join Boot Camp Moms and once you know your PIR date, set up or join that group.  There's wonderful support everywhere here.

    1 Chronicles 29:11-13(KJV)
"Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
    Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.

    Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks,
    and praise your glorious name."

Good evening everyone.. We always have to count our blessings: here's mine for this WONDERFUL day:

    1. Daddy Roel my father-in-law was granted a tourist visa today!

    2. Last night after working at the hospital(7pm-3am shift) I drove to Naval Air Station-Lemoore (for 4 hours), I arrived safely there and back. Was very nervous especially on the way there since it's a really dark and winding road (Pacheco Pass and I-5). I prayed and sing praises the whole way, glad to have K-LOVE radio.

    3. I was able to get my military ID..finally..

    4. I went to NFCU to "fix" the account and now I have access to it! I prayed so hard that I'd be able to talk to someone who would help me. Brenda (bank clerk) was really helpful and very patient to answer all my question and needs. She made everything so effortless!
    5. Meeting all of you helpful ladies here in N4M who help me navigate to this new lifestyle. (Amanda, thanks for the form!)
    6. My GPS broke down and I was glad that my co-worker Dolores printed out directions just in case.. I got there and back safe.

    7. All the helpful people in the NAS. Who was patient to me who is so bad with directions. I met an officer who handed me a detailed map of the area and even highlighted the DSP, NFCU, starbucks, gas station and how to get to I-5.

    8. The icing in the cake, seeing my husband in the picture! (Angel whose husband is in the same ship12/div 224 won the Tuesday trivia on the facebook page of RTC.

    9. For all of you here, thank you so much for the support and prayers.

Remember, with Jesus Christ everything is possible! God's mercy and blessings to to all of us, and our families!
  • joel's_rackie

My husband is still in BC, his PIR is this July 8th (ship12/div224). My in laws are attending his PIR all the way from the Philippines!
  • abbyblue

you should always maintain Opsec awareness, especially when posting on the public section of the site, such as forums or news.

    Here are some guidelines:

    Limit what you say about...

Military movements (deployment/redeployment dates, dates of field exercises, flight information etc.). For example, posting dates such as "next Tuesday" IS a specific date
    Any issues with the unit
    Anything concerning security
Equipment issues (what, no flak vests?)
Locations of units (it's OK to say they're in Iraq, but not to say that your spouse's unit is at 14th and Ramadan in Kadamiyah)

    Don't

    Discuss future destinations
    Discuss future operations or missions
Discuss dates and times of exercises
    Discuss readiness issues or numbers
    Discuss specific training equipment
Discuss people's names and locations in conjunction with operations
    Speculate about future operations
    Spread rumors about operations
Discuss sensitive information in public areas of the site
Post excessive personal information on public pages, such as:
    Deployment timing
Your family members' full names, ages or where they attend school
    Your address
    Rank and unit affiliation
    Deployed address

Hi Everyone! I haven't been around for some time but wanted to share some information I found out today.
I was contemplating whether or not to rent a car from the airport or pay for a car service to take me to the hotel from the airport. Well, I was pricing Budget Rental which has good rates. The cars I was looking at averaged between $114 - $175 for 3 day rental plus I averaged in another $150 for fuel. Well, Gurnee Flash Cab can pick me and my husband up at Milwaukee airport and take us to the Residence Inn Marriott in Waukeegan for $57.00 and $54 to return to the airport. That's a much better deal and I don't have to deal with the hassle of refueling before I return the rental car. Also, they charge $3.00 per person to drop you off at the Naval Training Base from Residence Inn.
So just food for thought for those of you who will be traveling soon. :o)
  • bobbie (ht mom)

thx wanda g i was looking into renting a car or car service from ohare to hotel and then the shuttle to pir
  • TickledTink

I bgot my rental car from Hertz at Midway where I am flying in booked through Hotwire.com for $20 a day!

Got my gate pass printed out today, makes it feel close!  Hopefully the next 10 days don't drag by!!

  • Paula (was Capricorna)

I just got back from PIR.  It was great!  If your Sailor is flying out, GO TO THE AIRPORT.  You don't need your Sailor to get a Gate Pass!!!  Just go to the check in counter of the airline on which your Sailor is flying.  You tell them you are meeting up with your Sailor, give them the Sailor's name, your identification and they print out a little "chit" which gets you through Security.  Then you can go find him/her.  It is easier if you tell him/her to call you with info on where to meet up - they can use pay phones or a buddy's cell phone.  Once they are at the airport, they are no longer under the thumb of their RDC's and the Recruit Training Center.

Bring them their cell phone and charger at this time and any favorite foods.  Keep in mind that they MUST be able to carry their seabag, garment bag and whatever else you give them, so this is probably not the time to bring them a lap top, back pack with civvies, pillow, etc. because the seabag and garment bag are big and heavy, and is about all they can handle.  Yes, those will be checked baggage, but they have to be able carry those bags after the flight to their next living quarters and might not be able to carry much more than the sea bag and garment bag.  These bags are HUGE and HEAVY.

This is important:  Your sailor will not be able to tell you exactly when he/she flies out until the day of PIR.  Read that previous sentence again. If they do tell you, it is subject to change, so be forewarned.  Just deal with it.  Figure out how long YOU are willing to stay and then be willing to say good bye and let your Sailor get on with his/her life.

I met my son at the airport at 6 am (he had arrived there at 1:30 am) and he wasn't departing until 8:30 pm that day.  That's more than14 hours to wait for his flight.  I think he was relieved when I left him after 2 hours - I mean, how much can you talk with a person (unless it is a spouse or a significant other)???

The important thing to understand is that you do not need your Sailor to get a Gate Pass - just his/her name and your ID.  I do not know how many people are allowed but I saw up to 4 family members (could be more).

  • bobbie (ht mom)

wow what a long wait your son had..................looks like they would hav let him hang with yall and be at airport b4 flight leaves oh well right lol so happy everything went well for you thanks for the advice and any more suggestions pls let us know
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Car rentals are less expensive out of Milwaukee than from O'Hare and Midway.  Midway is not a nice area (southwest Chicago).  If you fly into Milwaukee, you by-pass all the Chicago traffic, BUT  if your sailor is flying out of Midway, it makes for a long drive from Midway to Milwaukee.  I put on almost 400 miles on the rental car from Thursday to Sunday (had a sister in a western suburb so it was a triangulated drive).

If you fly Southwest (which goes into Milwaukee AND Midway) you can change flights (for up to a year) without penalty and there is no checked baggage fee.

The airport in Milwaukee is on the south side of the city.  If you take 41 South once you get into Illinois, you avoid the tolls (not expensive - less than $3) but you also avoid traffic and construction.  We took the toll road on our return and there was some slow downs because of road construction.

  • Invisible12

I know that after PIR they can fly out of O'Hare, Midway or Milwaukee, but (and maybe this is a stupid question) but does it seem that the SR's fly out of one airport more than another?  My son hasn't even left yet for BC but I'm already planning ahead....LOL...I certainly don't want to drive 400 miles from one airport to another if I can avoid it.  I must be crazy worrying about something like that so far in advance but I like to be prepared!!!!
  • smcfar92

They usually fly out of OHare or Midway. My son flew out of OHare. We picked him up in the morning and brought him to our hotel. Mind you, after the hard weeks of bootcamp they are tired. I think my son was on a happy high and just passed out cold in the car on the way back to the airport. Poor guy. I think he felt bad wanting to sleep in the hotel and didn't because he wanted to spend time with us. We left for the airport thinking we could find a restaurant onthe way on the freeway but didn't really see any and plus he just hard at sleep we didn't want to wake him. We thought we could eat at the airport. Well, there is only one small food court a couple terminals away that have to take the train - 10 min. I think. So, my last meal with him was not what I wanted for him and I was upset. I still feel guilty.
The USO guys are great! However, with all the sailors there, there is no room for families to stay. There are alot of sailors that don't have families there and the room is for the military but you can go in though. You will see a ton of them sleeping on the floor or watching tv. That's a good place for them to leave their stuff while you take them out.
Personally, I wanted to go to the gate with him (you can go through the military/VIP line through security with him/her; however my father (being a retired officer) whispered to me that it might be easier for my son that we don't. That broke my heart knowing he was probably right. My father asked him privately what he wanted and yes. That is what we did. My picture of him after a lot of tears from me and his grandma was him walking away alone as a man going to conquer what the world has to offer him. I think that was the second hardest thing for me to see next to him getting on the bus in April to BC after my father swore him in. He went through the gate to meet up with his fellow and now brothers and sisters that he will spend time with in A school. So, maybe ask your sailor what they want. It might make the goodbyes easier for them. Just a thought.
I wish you all luck and just know they are under the wings of the Navy and will make us all proud. You as parents have given them the beginnings of what it makes them a great being and sailor. The Navy just polishes them to shine more.
  • smcfar92

Another thing: I have read alot of posts on this site. Not just this thread. Moms are putting way too much personal info on here. I know firsthand that this whole site is monitored! By your sailors COs. Some SRs have been "teased" while in bootcamp on things that were said on the site. So, if your sailor tells you something in letters, please don't write it here.
  • bobbie (ht mom)

thx smcfar92 your words truly touched my heart .....thx for all advice and good luck y=to you and your sailor
  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

Just a quick question...do they usually leave from BC to go to school on Saturday?  Mine was supposed to be staying at GL, but have heard that corpsman school got moved to San Antonio (or will be moving) so he will fly out if that is the case.  PIR is usually always on Friday, correct?  And also, how long is BC?  I have a younger child that will be 12 about the same time he graduates...one weekend he will still be 11 and won't need to be on the list and the next he will be 12 and will need to be.  I know it depends on illness, passing tests, etc., but best case scenario, is it after 8 weeks?  He leaves in a couple of months for BC, and I'm just trying to find out exactly how it works.  Thanks!
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Let me say figure 10 weeks. with figuring the 8 and 9  and 10th friday as your PIR date. Keeping those dates open will help you to not have to change plans. Don't book any airfare unless you can for free redate them. From the Ohio moms group we 2 Ohio kids that hold the record for longest time in BC due to illness and ruling out allergies for our group. Both are in the in and serving now. YEAH!

As for teh one turning 12 does it say UNDER 12 or age 12 and up need listed. It might be 13 birthday would cause the need to list.

As to how the navy actually works when you figure it out please let me know. LOL My son PIR June '10 and I'm still trying to get it figured out.  Oh as for leaving when they leave al tht is up in the air until like the last two weeks of BC. as for Corpsman training going over to Texas I'm not sure mine is not a corpsman.

  • jacketfan24 (corpsman mom)

Thanks!  I will check on the age limit, but if I figure on 10 weeks he will definately be 12.
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

Under or age 12 and older. it's how it's worded. You could also call RTC and ask them. They were kind enough to answer a few questions like is it in or outside is there a/c or not. simple things.
  • Proud Grizz Mom 09/254

Hello ladies, I have a question.....my future daughter-in-law works in the photo lab at our local Wal-Mart....yesterday, a lady came in and copied a picture of her son's division.  He has PIR August 2, 2011.  She told my future DIL that the divisions had teamed up against one another (for some type of drill I think) and the winner of such drill were allowed to post a picture on a website.  She was unsure of which website, etc....just wondering if any of the very smart women on here knew what she may have been talking about.....God Bless and Thank You!
  • ProudNavyMom

smcfar92, you were able to pick him up from the airport and take him back to your hotel before his flight? Thank you so much for sharing your experience and great advice!
  • ProudNavyMom

That's what I thought too, but the post sounded like they left the airport. Just wishful thinking! Thanks! :)
  • smcfar92

Yes, at least mine was. If you do, just be sure he is there on time. If they miss the flight, that is a huge no no! I would double check though. Some fly out early but others fly out alot later in the day. Although afterwards thinking, you run in the risk of getting into an accident on the roads. That's a big chance.
  • LMC -mom of 2 Sailors!

To go to the gate you must get a gate pass at the airline that your sailor is flying on. they can decline the request if need be. SORRY just want you to be prepared that rarely do they but it could happen.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

ok, i have a question for the "veteran PIR moms"  when my other daughter graduated my son and i drove up there so there was no concern about transportation.  this go round we are driving a u-haul moving her husband, their stuff and her car there but are flying home.  we don't know what will be going on with her so having her drive us to the airport isn't an option as neither is SiL (no license).  any suggestions on how to get to the airport?
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

There is no cheap, fast and easy way to get to O'Hare (ORD) from Great Lakes/North Chicago. You can do it on public transportation by taking a METRA train then transferring to a CTA bus that will take you to the CTA train.  That will cost only about $8 but it will take you over 2.5 hours.

A faster but more expensive way ($35.00) to get there is by a shared shuttle van. This is a flat rate fare and the taxi has to be ordered:

    http://www.americantaxi.com/rates.asp

Midway Airport (MDW) is an hour further south of O'Hare, so the cost and logistics are even greater.

Milwaukee Airport (MKE) is another option - Southwest flies into MKE and because the airport is on the south side of the city, you avoid the Chicago traffic.  I am sure you could find a shuttle service/limo to MKE (google Milwaukee Airport for more info.)

  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

    thanks paula!
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

since my last request turned out so well i have another question, lol.

when should my son in law get his "packet" so he can get his ID card and we can get the stickers on her car before we head to PIR?
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Maybe someone else can answer this question by Duhhuh58...

I'm not sure what "packet",  ID card or stickers for the car you are referring to.

  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

it's the paperwork so he can go get his military ID and the stickers for the car so it can be driving on base
  • mostele

I thought all you needed was the gate pass to get on base?
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

no, he's a new navy husband and he is moving to GL at graduation.  she'll be up there until feb or march for school and since we don't know when she'll be allowed to stay off base and he doesn't have a dl i want to get it taken care of before we go up there, we're 1 1/2 hours from norfolk.  anyway, he got the package in the mail today so we're going to take care of it.
  • WandaG

FYI... Gurnee Flash Cab will also pick you up from Milwaukee airport or any of the Chicago airports for a flat rate. I got a quote of $57.00 for my husband and I to get picked up from Milwaukee airport to Residence Inn Marriott Inn- Waukegan. It will cost $54.00 from Residence Inn to Milwaukee airport. Also, for $3.00 (per person each way) their shuttle service will take you to the base from Residence Inn and they can also take you to any of the local restaurants you wish to go to. They number is 847-693-4211. I learned about this company through Residence Inn.

    I hope this information helps.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

thanks wanda!  so far we have the transportation to milwaukee airport for the trip home taken care of, Sarge is gonna give is a ride but i'll make sure my SIL has the info, he doesn't have a DL yet
  • julieb1019

For those who have just gone to PIR's is it true that extra guests not on the list may not be allowed on base to wait and see if they can be seated for the ceremony?
  • lisarobin

No there is no way of knowing if they are extra or not till they walk up to the PIR hall. Then they would just have to wait until all are seated then they can go in. It looked like the extras were sitting in the side bleachers with the band. (My son was up in the bleacher with the band until time for them to perform) The regular Navy band performs first which are great. However, the bootcamp band was great too! I was so proud.
  • HoldFast86 (Ship 12 Div 325)

Okay so the pamphlet that you get with the form letter with all the hotels and such on it has something about personalized stepping stones...well I was going to do that for my husband but my mother lost the pamphlet...does anyone know the website to order one?
  • KathyMmom

    HoldFast86 - yep - here it is:

    www.mwrgl.com or 1-866-352-7425

  • HoldFast86 (Ship 12 Div 325)

    =) thank you so much

Comment by wellen(ship04/DIV818 PIR 9/1) just now
Ladies, My sailor PIR'd 9/1.  I want to highly recommend Spring Hill Suites for your PIR stay. They take Marriott points, the rooms are spacious, the lobby is nice, there is a bar, pool is inside with outside seating, easy drive to base, Walmart right next door, clean and NAVY oriented.  Ask for VeeVee Brown, she works fulltime at the desk during the week.  847-688-9800. Enjoy the joy of seeing your loved one!
  • Diana (Proud Navy Mom)

Wllen, do they have a shuttle for PIR?
  • Diana (Proud Navy Mom)

Sorry, Wellen, mispelled your name.  In a rush to leave, don't want to be late for work but wanted to get caught up here first!
  • wellen(ship04/DIV818 PIR 9/1)

Yes, Spring Hill does have a shuttle, we took it, definitley the way to go to avoid the traffic/parking.They had a deal with Spring Hill...$3/pp, however I will say the driver was confused and thought it was $6/pp...either way still cheap and the way to go.
  • Diana (Proud Navy Mom)

I am still considering Ramada Inn because they have a free shuttle to PIR and they have the meet and greet at the hotel Thursday night. I have read mixed reviews, has anyone stayed there lately for PIR??  What did you think about it?
  • julieb1019

Hi just had PIR on 9/9.  We stayed at the Ramada where the meet and greet was held.  I was happy with the price (83 a night) and the convenience.  Then I read one Mom who wrote that she did not like it>  well I was skeptical after that but it was too late to change the reservation.  I am glad that I did not. IT was clean and comfortable. the staff was helpful and friendly.  the N4M reception was lively and fun and included a free soda or beer for 4.  The breakfast was also delicious and free. There is a pool and a restaurant that gives 10% discount if u r a guest.  It was really crowded on PIR morning.  We wanted to take a shuttle to avoid the car line up to get on the base.  It was so crowded that they had to make 2-3 trips so we decided to hop a cab that arrived.  We had 6 people and it was $30 for the ride and we took the same cab back to the hotel and then drove around after that. Six Flags and the Gurnee Mall are close by too.  We flew to Milwaukee and rented a van at the airport and then drove to the ramada.  The trip was really smooth and a lot of fun.  the time with my son went way too fast too.  He flew out from Ohare  on Sat morning but we got a gate pass and stayed until he boarded the plane. He is now in Va for A school and there is normal communication with him.  we brought his laptop celll and ipod and that fit in his navy issued backpack.  He had so much stuff thatt he could not handle another bag to carry.  Hope that this info helps you to plan your trip.  PIR was AMAZING.   And that first hug is too. ry to get to PIR as early as possible  to be on the main floor. There is a balcony but it all fills up by the time the ceremony starts.
  • Diana (Proud Navy Mom)

Thanks julieb, I was really unsure about the Ramada because of the mixed reviews but you made me feel better.  I am about 99% sure I am going to stay there now. Where did you get $83 for the hotel, everywhere I'm looking it is$89?
