The Navy Gateway Inns & Suites is located on the main base, about 1.5 miles from RTC. Only those with military IDs can access the base to stay there. http://dodlodging.net or 1-877-NavyBed (1-877-628-9233).
Just found this site and all the wonderful information. My son is set for PIR on November 9. I had originally scheduled to fly to Chicago on Thursday, but after reading so much information is it better to come a day earlier. Also just realized since he is staying GL for A school he may have Monday the 12th off? Should I change my airline tickets to stay through Monday. Was leaving Sunday? Thanks.
i just went to PIR last week. I flew in early Thursday and my sailor is attending A school in GL. Because of that we scheduled our flight for Monday. We rented a car through Costaco because we wanted the liberty to go as we pleased. I’m sure others will also pipe in with their experience so you will have more to draw on. You can also ask in the boot camp for moms group. Good luck❤️
My daughter is due to graduate 1/25/2018. Booking flights and hotel. Does anyone know for sure when they leave for A school if going to Pensacola FL? Saturday or Sunday?
Tlpemp55, It is usually Saturday, but flight availability issues could result in a Sunday flight. Only your then Sailor will know for sure. See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.
To Moms of Graduated Sailors - If you attended the Sarge's Meet and Greet, what was it like? I am really interested in seeing pictures and videos of my son's boot camp experience. And I would enjoy meeting other parents as well.
My son's PIR was pushed back to March 01, 2019. He gave me his division # and PIR date, however I did not get his Ship #. Will that be provided in the form letter and how long before I receive that letter. I spoke to my son on January 03, 2019. Any info would greatly be appreciated! Thanks
"HI! Thank you for allowing me to be part of this group, my daughter is in division 920, and I keep finding information about a greet and meet event that was held in the past, but nothing about the upcoming PIR on march 22. I was wondering if anyone know where I can find more information about it.
Hello All! My son has a PIR date of 8/2 .. I mailed his form back on yesterday but I failed to make a copy of his form letter so that I could send it again to make sure that it arrives. Is there a link that I can access to print one off? Thanks in advance for your help!
I MESSED UP. Can anyone point me in the right direction to correct this? I was tying to SEARCH "PIR September 27, 2019" and I accidentally created a group! Does anyone know how to delete this? also - still looking for the right group for the PIR date. THANK YOU
Hello everyone. Newbie here. Not sure what all the abbreviations mean yet. My son just left a few days ago so i need to get acquainted with navy terminology.
RESUMING LIVE PIR - 8/13/2021 - ONLY 2 GUESTS ALLOWED
MASK AND SOCIAL DISTANCING IS REQUIRED.
NO MASK, NO ENTRY
Recruit Training Command will re-open boot camp graduation, or the Pass-In-Review ceremony, for a limited number of family members and guests beginning with graduation ceremonies August 13. Each recruit may invite two guests (max, no exceptions) to attend in person. (Children 2 & under do not count toward the guest limit.) Masks and social distancing is required. If you are unable to wear a mask for any reason you will not be able to attend.
Hi all son left for bootcamp July 20th for GL. I know we have to wait for formal letter to know when grad is. He's going to FL for school so I think he gets one day of liberty we can spend with him. After grad can you spend time with them?
Congrats Sandy! Looks like you can attend PIR in person!! My experience is from 2019. At the conclusion of graduation, they announce "Now hear this, now hear this...Liberty call, Liberty Call!" Now you are free to go hug your sailor! We took ours to lunch and spent the afternoon together. After dinner he had to be back (8ish?) to prepare to go to the airport at 1:30 am. So, we dropped him off, went to hotel and slept for 2 hours then got up to meet him at ORD. The Navy is great to give family "gate passes" so you can go through security and spend those precious hours with them before they fly off to their A School. We spent the next 6 or 7 hours visiting with him and his buddies as they all awaited their flights. I wouldn't trade that time for anything! I thought I would be tired but I was so excited to hear their stories and watch them interact that I didn't care about sleep! Each sailor's journey is different. You will find out the week of PIR about your son's flight plans. Most leave less than 24 hours after PIR. ENJOY THE RIDE!
Thanks so much for the info. Missing him awful. I am hoping he's getting my sandboxx letters. I can't wait to hear from him. Wonder when I will get call?
How and when do I find out my sons PIR date? This 2 weeks he has to spend in quarantine is confusing me when it comes to trying to follow the timeline for boot camp. It seems like there is no information on how the 2 week quarantine ROM works now that it’s back in Great Lakes
Beginning Aug. 13, graduating Sailors are authorized liberty following the Pass-In-Review (PIR) ceremony. Liberty comes with rules and regulations Sailors must follow.
While on liberty, RTC Sailors will not consume alcohol (regardless of age), use tobacco products or drugs, visit tattoo or piercing parlors, hitchhike, or drive a motor vehicle. Sailors must remain in the complete uniform of the day at all times.
For all Recruit Training Command (RTC) Sailors NOT transferring to Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes, liberty expiration is at 2100 (9 p.m.). If “A” school is at TSC Great Lakes, Sailors will immediately return to their compartment after PIR to transfer and they will get liberty upon arrival to their new command once checked in and completed with any administrative actions. For Sailors not immediately detaching RTC, Saturday and Sunday liberty hours are from 0800-2100.
The expiration of liberty is in the division compartment, NOT at the front gate and late Sailors will be subject to disciplinary actions that could impact subsequent liberty. Sailors are NOT permitted to ride in private vehicles to their barracks from the main gate, so be sure to return your Sailor to the main gate with enough time for them to walk back to their barracks.
Upon return from liberty, all bags will be inspected for contraband. Contraband includes, but is not limited to: drugs, alcohol, tobacco products or associated paraphernalia, medication unless prescribed by a military doctor, food, magazines or papers, and portable electronic devices (cell phone, ear pods, etc.).
Thank you for helping us complete the mission of liberty while keeping the Navy’s newest Sailors safe.
Hi there having issues downloading access forms for graduation would some one be able to please email me the forms dipietro.sandra@yahoo.com much appreciated
Hi @cindy!! My son is in Ship 2 Div 807, is your son by chance in the Future Sailor Preparatory Course? My son is and so if yours is too they won't get their PIR dates until they finish the program which lasts about 3 weeks after their processing week.

Here is info on Hotels.
The brochure that is included with The Form Letter from MWRGL about hotels and other things is at RTC Friends and Family Brochure July 2017 rev.pdf. It should have some suggestions with contact information.
The Page, Saving Money PIR Weekend, has information on hotels, transportation to GL, and more.
The Navy Gateway Inns & Suites is located on the main base, about 1.5 miles from RTC. Only those with military IDs can access the base to stay there. http://dodlodging.net or 1-877-NavyBed (1-877-628-9233).
The Navy Lodge is located 1.9 miles off base from RTC and guests of graduation are allowed to stay there. https://reservations.staydod.com/hotelSearch.do?action=View&pro... or 847-689-1485.
There are also hotels in Vernon Hills, Gurnee, and Waukegan. Hotel Indigo-Vernon Hills . Here are other places that people have mentioned I do not recommend or endorse any particular one): Ramada Inn Waukegan (some like the place and others do NOT), Hampton Inn in Libertyville, Residence Inn Waukegan, Red Carpet Inn in North Chicago, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham at Wadsworth Waukegan, La Quinta Inn & Suites in Gurnee... That should give you some places to try.
The discussion, Recommended Places to Stay, within PIR Reference Information may give you some ideas. Check http://www.tripadvisor.com/ to see what others have said about any hotel you are considering.

One more question sounds like using Sarge versus a rental car is the way to go?
Oct 25, 2018

Myjazzy I would rent a Car, you have more of the freedom to go where you want. its really not that bad driving, and many ways to bypass the tolls.
