This group started on 2/8/11 and we survived boot camp, laughter and tears. Now our recruits are sailors and headed in many directions, but we'll continue to support one another throughout!
To Texasmom: Hello I am from Texas too. Answer to your quest.
"Recruits are required to contact their family if their training is disrupted and they will not graduate on time. If you have not heard from your recruit, no news is good news."
Denise: Here is Kathy's screenname: Kathy (Ship 07 DIV 114)
Look it up in "Members" and then message her....or post on the 4/01 group which is where Kathy is. I know she would appreciate that! This poor SR needs some mail!
ntz4laa: Let's hope so! I would love to see the smile on his face...in my mind!
I hate to read that there are recruits who have no one to call either. How sad....maybe all of us N4Ms need to be "foster moms" to these SRs and tell them to call us??? I just feel that every SR needs to know that we love them and support them.
Kudos to Kathy's son for bringing it to his mom's attention. Must be an exceptional young man, learning what it means to be a Sailor and that you are indeed "your brother's keeper."
It is so great to write to the recruits who are not getting any mail. And they are appreciative and write back, or at least 2 wrote me back. And it meant extra letters from bootcamp lol. It was great for the recruits and awesome for me as well. :-)
My older son, who is a reservist told me that when he was in BC there were a couple of kids that didn't get any mail. He wants to write to him also.He also said that the ones that were in his div, just had really messed up home lifes, It just makes me sad to think that, here we are hearts aching from missing our kids, and there are kids out there that nobody seems to care,,
Has anyone booked their flight yet? I know 39 days, and I haven't recieved a letter or call yet, BUT, we live in NJ and if I book it by tomorrow, I can save $200 on the 4 tickets! I have already booked the hotel (we are staying at the Navy Lodge) Just wondering if anyone has booked their flight
To Debi(Shi9Div126) Just to let you know, we have booked our flight on Southwest, which has already built in changeable dates, times, etc. without an extra charge (like some airlines charge). It is not too early to do this. I'm sorry to hear that the kids in their Div are messed up. That is the Div my daughter is in. I mail her a letter every few days and her boyfriend writes to her, too. I have not received a letter from her yet. Next week will be week three. When we got the initial call, she said she might be able to call again in week three. I am so going to run to that phone every time it rings and maybe, hopefully, a letter will come this week.
We are looking for a recruit that we met at the Swear In @ Meps when we were there with our recruit. I know his name but I'm not sure which Div he wound up in. He didn't have a soul there to see him off. A lot of them didn't. Sounded like he had a difficult home life.
I went to the Navy Recruit Training Command on FB, but how do you get to add a comment? I didn't see a "Friend" link, like on a regular Face Book site to get to write to someone and become their friend. How do you do that on the NRTC FB page? Someone must know because there sure are alot of comments about it. Some talk about our PIR 4/8/10 date. Sure would like to know if my SR is going to be Grad and Go as we scheduled our return flight later to have more time with her. What a bummer if she has to leave Saturday!
We started a writing group for SR's who could use some mail- making an icon and will pop that up later. Here is the link, and we already have Kathy's SR address posted to our small, yet bound to grow group. The addresses will be sent out privately to members only, as needed, on a once daily basis. Also as needed.
@Debi, I'm with you. We're ready to book our flight, but so hesitant. Want to get the best fares as we are purchasing 4 tickets, but don't want them to sky rocket if we wait too long. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.
mchalesmom: When my son left for bc, he didn't want any of us there. He had us drop him off at the hotel to meet up with his recruiter/other recruits the night before he left. Wouldn't even let us wait in the hotel with him! So no one was there to send him off either....I felt bad about that but even after begging, he said he would be fine. I feel badly now...but he said it was no big deal and he was afraid it would be harder for him to say goodbye if we were there on the actual day he left. So maybe some of the ones you saw where like him? With lots of support behind them...but not wishing them to be there??? But I know that there are many who really do not have the support. I think what HuntersMom is doing with the link to help the SRs not getting mail is wonderful!
@proudmominnc I think SW is going to have the best deal for flights they offer a competitive fair and the best deal as far as changes and cancellations. Talked to an agent Friday and am probably going to book with them
Rhonda, we live in NJ and really can fly either out of Philadelphia or Atlantic City. The ac airline is smaler, but since its only a 2 1/2 hour flight I think we are swaying towards that one.If I book it by tomorrow, I can get all 4 tickets non-stop for $600.If I go out of Phila, It will cost me a little more than double. My sister inlaw and her huband flew out of AC (spirit airline) And said the flight was fine, but do shope around. Try hotwire also
Got a call from my SR and I MISSED IT!!! He called his BF and I had to call the BF to get the info. Doing fine but he failed the run...not making those plane reservations yet. Praying he makes it....
I got my first real letter today!! A little behind some others, but well worth the wait! It was dated Feb 20th, that seems like a long time for it to get here but I am so glad it did. I am soo happy to hear from him! :) and ps. mumziepooh, I like the blues too!!
I feel like it's Christmas morning!! No letter yet or long phone call but my SR just called 3 times to get info needed for security, like addresses and phone numbers!! It was so nice to hear his voice.
He did say that he was able to write yesterday, finally, and had received our letters. It all depends on is the group does well.
He has been assigned drum major, leading the musicians, but doesn't march well. He played in orchestra for years so he could sit and not march (because he is uncoordinated with marching) but takes the wrap, getting 'beat up' is their term, for ALL the mistakes made in the group. He is the division leader and says tho it sounds like a prestigious role for leadership, he takes the wrap for everything...everyday. Says it sucks. Got 'beat up' for three hours straight yesterday.
Little heartache.
But, what can ya do?
Also said he is grad and go. Bummer! Has to get on a flight Saturday at 2a.m. to head to CA. to start classes Monday morning. I think that changes our plans. May just send his dad to PIR. . Can't afford three tickets anyway. Would have had to borrow.
Otty...poor kid! How in the world did he get to be the unlucky one? Sure hope my son hasn't done anything to cause him extra hardship. Be praying for him and all of their Ship and Division. So glad you were able to speak to him though.
Hello all, I haven't been on in a few days. Went to a going away party of my son's best friend last night. He is leaving tomorrow for GL. I received a call yesterday from my son. It was wonderful just to hear him. He is having his wisdom teeth pulled soon and I know he is nervous about that. I am wondering if the letters are being delayed. I have written him many letters and he says he has only recieved just the first ones I sent back around the 10th of Feb. Does anyone know? He says they get mail every day so I don't understand. Have a great evening all.
Well no letter today or phone call. 38 Days so the countdown continues.
Thank you so much navyrules! for your post this weekend...I needed some reassurance. Saturday was really tuff; but as every day goes by it's one day less I have to wait.
Otty- they tell all the Grad & Go (Saturday Departures that they fly out at 2am. That is what time they start departing for the airport. I don't think any of the flights actually start leaving until 6:30 am or later. Sometimes their flight may not be until afternoon so if you meet them at the airport early in the morning you could have anywhere from a couple of hours to several extra hours to spend with your recruit. Not to try and make your decision any harder :-) I hope this info will help you and others as well. The recruits will not usually know their actual flight time until a day or so before PIR.
Heading to FL for a week to defrost. I probably won't be checking except for my "in box" so if anything special happens, please let me know! Hope you all get phone calls and letters this week! 38 days to go!
I like your new profile pik, Lala. Easier to see your beautiful ribbons!
Everyone, as you all will see, the RDCs are still using the term "GradNGo" to mean Sat. Departures too....not just for ones moving to GL after PIR. I missed time with my sailor at the airport...didn't know about it then (I was very new to N4Ms)...but I have heard from others that the time spent there with your sailor and the others at the airport is very special....they are treated so kindly by other passengers at the airport...one group of sailors, as they were announced to board, got a standing ovation from all at the gates surrounding them. Brought tears to my eyes just hearing that. Can't say that my son got the same reception down here at the MIA airport when leaving in his dress whites to duty station....made me quite angry! We DID get a smile from one man.... :-)
