This group started on 2/8/11 and we survived boot camp, laughter and tears. Now our recruits are sailors and headed in many directions, but we'll continue to support one another throughout!
Bawahahahah Jessica - and then there is my son.....who never wrote me a single letter in college, who texts one word answers and barely finished graduation thank you notes. It helps to know your child well enough to not run to the mailbox all the time! :D No news is good news!
my son was good about writing when there (4 letters was good for him!). But he didn't write to anyone else...said just had no time...and I too, mumziepooh, knew that writing was not his forTAY!. I felt very honored to receive the few letters that I did....because I really wasn't expecting any! Yep, No news is good news...for sure!
I am glad to see that my son is writing letters. They do make me smile. Now, my daughter, who is in college, has explained to me that I can write HER letters and she WILL write back! LOL - can we say jealous? I just rolled my eyes at her!
Ragdoll - my 16 year old started a letter to her brother and then just sort of didn't finish it when I told her not to decorate the envelope - sort of lost her steam, I guess. So I asked her about it last night and she said - "Mom, what is the big deal? He was in college all those years and I never talked to him - doesn't seem any different now." Hahaha - she is right! I'm the one that talked to him. With the sisters, it is out of sight out of mind.
Funny about your daughter. My older daughter loves to write - sends cute cards all the time. She SHOULD be doing homework. I think it is a distraction for her - for my son, his distraction right now is probably sleep!
I have also been after my 17 year old daughter to write a letter. She was SO upset that he was leaving for BC. When I asked her several times about the letter she said," I don't think my brother really cares if I write." I agree out of sight, out of mind.
They are all so different - our children. Sometimes I wonder how my two came from the same two people because of how extremely different they are.
So, I will continue to write letters to my son, write letters to SRs with no one writing to them, and try to add a note to my daughter from time to time. She also wants me to send her care packages regularly. *Rolling my eyes again* as though the $$ I pay every month isn't enough. Geeeez!
You all have a good day. Heading to Nebraska.. brrr... will chat more later!
My brother looked so handsome in his blues! I was amazed at how different he looked at graduation, like a different person, almost glowing! He was so full of pride! I thought our sailors would be wearing white? I read it in the "what to wear/bring to PIR" discussion posted by Jessica B-Sailor Mom. I could be misreading it (wouldn't be the first time LOL). And honestly it doesn't matter what color he is wearing, I just can't wait to see him!!!! Either way they are going to look GREAT! :)
My other brother also sent me pictures of him in his blue camos (his working uniform?) and his khaki shirt with black pants (service uniform) and I LOVE them both! He looks so grown up :)
Diannep asked RTC when they would switch to Dress White Uniforms for PIR and the answer was the first week of May. :-)
My sailor had PIR in July and I have still not seen her in the Dress Blues lol. I have seen her in every other uniform, but not those :-( I think the White ones are my favorite but I may change my mind when I see her in the other one.
I love the conversation about getting the siblings to write.. I have 7 children and I text them, call them and get on their FB and harass them on a daily basis at dinner to write their brother. I know they all have at least got one out. But what I did this week is just asked them to send their favorite picture of the two of them.. I thought that might be easier. Then in a couple weeks im going to ask them to send a card. Try to change it up some.
I brought in a "Proud of You" card to work. I've worked for the same company for 12 years~hubby has worked there 16yrs. I had everyone at work sign the card..SR will know he has a lot of support behind him!!
that's a good idea jim'scupcake. I have people at working writing to SR's and their children (LOL) I should get them to sign something for MY son!! :0)
My younger son (17) does not like to write lol. So I told him to draw his sister a picture and send it to her. He is a great artist. So he did just that. He has wanted to be in the Coast Guard since he was a little boy. In the picture he drew his sister yelling for help in the ocean beside her boat that had capsized in a terrible storm. He was being lowered from a coast guard helicopter with the caption "Don't worry Sis, If your ship starts to sink we (Coast Guard) will save you". She sent he back a letter and drew him a picture as well. it was a tiny little Coast Guard Cutter next to an Aircraft Carrier with the caption "No worries here lil Bro, our Ships are much bigger" lol. Now whenever she comes home they draw pics for each other on the dry-erase board on the frig :-)
Debi: Lala has a sailor already! She is one of our veterans helping on here....paying it forward! She is a huge help on the groups, in addition to her wonderful ribbons!
The BattleStations video was awesome. That is like the "Final" exam. I looked at the pictures on FB of the Captain's Cup, but don't they do that more towards the end of their training? Would our PIR date of 4/8/11 group be doing that at this point (week 3)? I write to my daughter almost every day. No letters back yet though. I tell her if she is too tired or doesn't have the time not to worry about it. I send a blank piece of paper and a SASE back to us at home in every letter I write her. That way she's got paper and a stamp on an envelope with the address already written. I haven't gotten one back yet. I will keep writing and not get discouraged. But, please let me know if that Captain's Cup comes later on in the training? I heard it was towards the end and whatever team wins, gets to carry in the flag at graduation. Could be wrong. Can anyone set me straight?
Still....waiting.....for a letter. I did hear that her friend that lives at Great Lakes received a letter today. So, I figure we should be getting one in the next couple of days.
Captains Cup is actually held the Sat. before PIR for all divisions...some will have already completed their BattleStations by then (with this larger group, they should start a week before PIR)...the rest will go PIR week.
NavyMomofonly1Girl: The divisions earn many different flags....so all divisions should be carrying some kind of flags at PIR. But, yes, there should be one for the winners of Captains Cup also....there are 2 winners...one for the all-male division and one for the intergrated (men and women) division.
Can anyone explain to me about the flags? I have read this about ordering shirts etc..but, I am not sure where to do that or what it means. Also who can watch the captains cup. Is that a ceremony? Thank you.
Captain's Cup is a friendly competition between the divisions. It includes relay races, tug of war, volleyball. All kinds of fun stuff. It is not open to the public.
texasmom- I think maybe you are talking about the blue star flags. They are meant to be displayed in a front window of your home during times of war. They are a great way to show your support for your sailor and let others know you have someone in the military. They are only for immediate family members only and are not supposed to be hung until you get the I'm a sailor call. It is good to go ahead and order one because they can takes a few weeks to arrive and as soon as you get that call after battlestations you can hang it in your window. They are free and to order one here is the link http://www.mybluestarflag.com/
We didn't receive a letter today, but my parents did!! Yep...our SR is growing up...he wrote to his Gma & Gpa. Said he is still enjoying it. Glad to be with others who want to be Sailors. Guys in his division ranging in age from 17-32. Had some downtime on Sunday. His letter sounded really good. I am not even sad that we didnt get one....just glad he wrote to others and that he is doing so well!
The flags for each division are all very unique. Someone (or a few someone's) who is/are very artistic and talented design the flag that will represent their division. They will then carry that flag with them and someone will carry it in front of the division at PIR. They are very proud of that flag because it represents who they are are as a team and division. The design for the flag is also printed on shirts and the recruits and/or parents can order them. I don't have the link for ordering but I am sure someone can post it. It is best to check with your recruit before placing an order because many of them order one for certain members of their family.
