This group started on 2/8/11 and we survived boot camp, laughter and tears. Now our recruits are sailors and headed in many directions, but we'll continue to support one another throughout!
texasmom, I think if you just tell them the division number and PIR date they will know which design to use for your shirts. But it is a good idea to know a little about the design so you make sure you get the right one.
Does anyone know if our recruits can stay with us when we are there for graduation. I know this question may have already been asked, but I may have missed it.
Marianne: The only way the sailors can spend the weekend nights with you is if they are GradNGo to Great Lakes A School (move over right after PIR and then call you to pick them up) and they have been granted overnights. Otherwise, they will have liberty with you but must return in the evenings.
I got a letter today! My SR sounds good. He said he is improving personally and working on his temper and patience. He is praying at night for strength and to be a better person.
WOW...I am picking my mouth up from the floor. I am going to try to personally thank his RDCs for this transformation!!
I received a letter today as well. I love Thursdays! My son said the same thing Momma2USNSailor. He said that he couldn't attend because he had inspections to prepare for. I am glad that your SR was able to now attend. Maybe mine can as well.:)
WOW!! I got two letters today! Dated feb 24th and 27th said he has only received one of mine though. He sounds GREAT! Explained inspections and some ideas about what he will be doing after graduation but it sounds like its up in the air? It is so nice to hear from him!
OMG, my SR called this afternoon. Totally surprised us. We both just happened to have the day off and were out picking up eyeglasses and my cell rang. I never pick up my cell in the middle of doing something! She sounded incredibly great. Doing great. Was "Pinned" the other day, so she's got some "bling" on her collar. Likes the way it feels when people notice all that hard work. Say her div. is doing real good. They got an hour worth of phone calls today, so she took advantage of that. She is a grad and go but has weekend Liberty with us.Yay. Filled me in the their "sponsor" out of Virginia. Asked for a few more addresses and loves all the letters, said, "keep writing everyday" even though I tend to say the same things. Hope you all are starting to get your phone calls too, cause this is just the pick me up we all need. Best day I have had since 2/8.
For those who have SRs that will be Grad & Go (A-School in GL), Angie posted a policy change in the Boot Camp Moms forum....
FYI...there has been a policy change at TSC GL (that is where the "A" Schools are in Great Lakes). All Sailors checking in from RTC after PIR will NO longer be allowed overnight liberty. They will be in Phase one and will ONLY be allowed to leave the base during the day IF the family is here and they have approval from the Barracks LCPO. They MUST return every night at a time that they will be told.
It is good to see that most are having contact. I still look forward to a phone call, but I won't complain since I have gotten some letters.
I wanted to share what I witnessed today. It made me so proud to be a part of this country and the love and appreciation that we have for our military.
I was waiting to board a plane and the gate attendant was going through the people that were alowed to board and all of a sudden she stopped. Said, "Hold on a minute. I see a lady in unform over there. Ma'am, are you boarding this plane?" The female in fatigues shook her head yes and the gate attendant made a very huge stand. "You come over here roght now. Ladies and Gentlemen, we all support our troops and our military have the honor to board our planes immediately. Thank you for protecting our country!" As the soldier made her way through the crowd, everyone stood up and started clapping. I started balling like a baby!!!
WOW, Ragdollrae! Tears! How wonderful! Can you please bring that gate agent to Miami's airport? My son was in his dress whites heading to duty station, along with another guy nearby in army camos. They were just treated like everyone else....made me so sad....so...God Bless that gate agent! Wondering if she had a family member/friend in the military????
ProudNavyMom, I already have one! I didn't know that they had the Anchors Aweigh recording though. Your future daughter in-law would love it. I love mine!!!
If I had known what I was abouto see, I surely would have video taped it. It was one thing that the gate agent called out the military personnel, but for everyone parting the way and standing up and clapping... it simply moved me.
It kind of reminded me what my son wrote in his last letter to his girl friend. When his division didnt pass one of their mock inspections and they made them do intense workout and go to bed wet. The RDC then put on music and the last song for the night was the National Anthem all the guys got out of bed and started signing together this was only about 10 days in boot camp. He then said he was proud to serve his country. That is not my son, it made me cry.
Second letter came yesterday! So happy to hear from my SR, he sounds like he is doing really good!! :) So are these the "I'm still alive" calls or where they for a specific purpose? I've been keeping my cell next to me since he left but its never leaving my hand now that I know calls are starting to come in!! Thank you for the update!
I got a 3 page letter today, my SR sounds really good, I am so happy, Hoping that he will be able to call soon, he also sent letters to his Grandmom and Pop, his Sister and an Aunt and Uncle! I was sad to see that the chain I got him was in the envelop. I got him the St. Christopher medel with the Navy emblem on the other side and I had it blessed for him. I assuming the medel is on his dogtags , well now the chain is on me, I will give it back when I see him at PIR
We got letters too!!! SR sent one addressed to me, and one to hubby! Cute. All is well...still just loving it. Doing great on the PFA. Lots of shots. Folding clothes. Ended the letter with.. "Hope to hear from you soon! I got a ton of letters you sent!". Both with exclamation points..wow, that made us happy.
Dad's letter talks about the schedule they keep...up at 4am. By 4:02am standing at attention with boots on.Eating, PT, class, more PT, more eating and study until sleep. Says he will be going to "A" school with a few guys in his DIV, so that will be nice.
We received our first letter today too. Glad to see we are starting to get mail. My SR says boot camp is tough but alright. Get's about 5 hours sleep each night. Told us to make sure the envelopes are not too stuffed because he had to open it up in front of everyone. But it turned out o.k. Nothing in there that couldn't be seen. The SASE made it a bet fat.
Made some friends and says that his division,920, is a strong one. Div 920 and 921 work together allot.
Should be able to finally call on Sunday. Now the perplexing question,,,church or miss church so I don't miss the phone call. Hmmm...
otty ~ Go to church and put your cell phone on vibrate. HOPEFULLY your SR will remember your at Church and call afterwards. But just in case...vibrate. :)
We got a good letter yesterday. he talks about doing well - beat some of the younger recruits in fitness activities! Yay! and is charge of the laundry detail! the whole experience really sounds good.
Good morning everyone, as most of you know my sailor is finished with bootcamp & school. She is at her first duty station in VA. She called me 2 days ago very upset and angry because of some people from a Baptist church who were protesting at a funeral. She said it made her angry because she too is Baptist and the God she knows and loves is a loving and caring God and she believes he would never want people to be so cruel to anyone, especially someone who was burying their child because he was killed in a war and believed it was his duty to protect their rights as Americans. Within minutes of hanging up the phone with her I found this video posted on a friends facebook page and shared it with her and now I am sharing it with you. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. God Bless you all and your soon to be Sailors.
does anyone know how long before/after PIR we have with our SR? I want to have as much time with my daughter that i can but if we can't see them the day after Grad. then we will fly home Sat.AM
Sandy, if your daughter is not a grad and go or a Saturday Departure then you will most likely have the remainder of Friday, all day Saturday and all day Sunday with her. There is a cnahce that she could have watch at some point during the weekend that she would have to be there for. She will be the one who tells you if she is a grad and go or Saturday departure. If her A-school is in Great Lakes you will still get Sat and Sun with her even if she is a grad and go.
I had a 30 minute call with my daughter yesterday. It was wonderful to finally hear her voice! I have made my reservations fir graduation and can hardly wait to see her. Sounds like it is tough but she is pushing through it.
sandy: If she is GradNGo, she will leave out most likely on Sat. a.m. If she isn't, she may not leave until the next week (usually around Tues -Wed). I wouldn't chance it...I would plan to stay until Sunday afternoon at least just in case! We scheduled that...then SR found he was GradNGo...but we kept reservations...and just did some sightseeing after he left.
Just a note to remind you all that your time is coming and it is fabulous to finally hear their voice during the " I'm a Sailor" call.
A tip I found out - My son said sometimes I wrote boring stuff (nice, since all writing has been one sided - ha ha) and that what is really needed is funny, comic relief!
We have had 2 SR's that have received mail and are ready for more names if you happen to hear of any.
Some other ideas are: I sent my son pictures of himself when he was younger. I had some of him at Easter (he was 3 years old) in a little outfit with anchors on the collar. I would always put little comments like "Look, you must have known then, that you wanted to be a sailor". My son, believe it or not, was voted in Senior year of high school as "The Person Most Likely to Crash on your Couch". lol I sent him the picture of him in his Senior yearbook laying across the couch. I attached a note "You've come a long way, baby" lol Dress up your animals, like in my picture and send them those kinds of pictures too. That one is my son's favorite picture. I would also go online and get random facts and sent those. He loved those too, as some were pretty funny.
When my sailor was there I sent her a letter from her cat. Her cat is huge and needs to loose some weight so the vet put him on a diet and since we control what he eats I figured it would be easy. NOT lol. So the letter said: Please help, since you left I have to beg for food, no one hear listens to me and they don't care that I am starving. What kind of cruel punishment is this. They cleaned your room and there are no longer clothes on the floor for me to lay on. BTW I have taken over your pillow since you are not using it anyway. Now, I am not sure what you were thinking when you left me but don't you think you are a little old for camp? And, I know you love shoes but pick out the dang boots already and get back here ASAP. Someone needs to feed me dang it. I am starving here. Please help me. I am getting weaker and weaker..... Love Shadow
Just an idea of something funny I did for my sailor and she loved it. She said she was laughing so hard she had to explain the letter :-)
Lala Ribbon Queen, I LOVE that! Super cute! What a great idea! My mom got a letter from my brother yesterday finally! It was written over a few days. He said he still hadn't received any of our letters. He was doing well, said he rarely has time to "daydream" but when he does he starts to feel a little homesick then quickly snaps himself out of it. He also said the time goes by strange there. The hours drag by but the days fly by. The letter ends as if he didn't finish it. He was in the middle of writing something and the letter just ended. I didn't get a letter today. I am hoping to get one soon, though if he isn't getting my letters who knows!
ProudNavySister- I am sure he will get them soon. It takes a lot longer for them to get theirs than it does for us to get the ones they write to us. Fingers crossed for you to receive one very soon. :-)
I know my SR has received some of her letters because she asked questions about what I've written her. There's just so much of a time lag. I'd almost forgotten what I had written!
Still waiting for her to tell me if she's found out if she's Grad & Go (staying at GL for A school), Kiss & Ship (Saturday departure to SA), or on hold for departure to SA.
I just received word from the TSC Great Lakes that "All new Sailors reporting to TSC GL from RTC after PIR will not have overnight libery and need to be back by 2100 (9pm)."
Is this new info or am I just the last to know? lol
