My niece's PIR is this Friday. From what she has told me she goes to A school starting Monday. Seems to be the same plan just three weeks behind (that is about how long she was in RDC)
Now is the time to send many letters of encouragement. They need to hear lots of positive thought righ now.
  • Debralew

My daughter is finishing up her 4th week in RCU due to stress fractures in both heels. She was finally phased up and began walking laps. She missed her PIR 3 weeks ago, but she's keeping her head up. Lots of prayer, cards and letters.

  • Alex's_Mom (Robin)

My son Alex was put into the FIT Division on Friday 7/17 after he failed his final PFA (run time was 15:30 of 13:30) and didn't get to do PIR on 7/24, he called me Sunday 7/26 to let me know that he was scheduled to see the doctor on Monday (yesterday) for leg pain... possible Shin Splints. I have been sending him encouraging cards and letters.

I talked to him for 37 minutes and half of the call was trying to keep him from crying and beating himself up over the time issue.

I am praying for all of you with children and loved ones in the same boat.

  • Debralew

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter Cristen. It seems the phone calls get a little longer while they are in RCU, so hopefully the next one will be much longer. Keep those letters and cards going. She's going to need them, asking with pictures to cheer her up.
  • Debralew

I'll be praying for your son as well Alex's Mom. It is very tough when they are held back, but he'll make it.
  • Alex's_Mom (Robin)

Thank you all for the support

  • Alex's_Mom (Robin)

    Still no letter or call.....

I hope he has received all my letters.

  • Debralew

We hear from our daughter each weekend when she gets her calling time. And they usually have more time to write letters, so hopefully you will get them soon. Processing takes some time I'm sure. After the first week we received several letters all at once. You'll start getting them. Changing ships and divisions takes the mail a little longer to catch up.

My daughter was moved to rcu today. She is so upset. I forgot to ask her what the address is so I can send more encouraging letters. Can someone please tell me what the address is? Thank you

Hello to everyone.  My son sent me a letter last week and then I got a phone call Sunday morning saying he has a stress fracture in his right foot.  Had a bone scan yesterday which I won't know the results of until Sunday I'm sure.  His spirits are not real good at the moment and I have a big fear of him getting sent home.  Anyone have any experiences to share about this?  He said he started PT and may join another group in BC a month?  Any info would be very helpful. Thanks!

  • Mickatee

Realtreegirl1, hugs and much support to you. There is a ship 4 division Facebook page that is so very helpful (SHIP 4 FIT/RCU Navy BC Support). You will have to be approved for admittance. Our SR shipped 7/9, and "sprained" his ankle 7/26. His original PIR date was 9/4. We later learned the sprain was a break. He's back in a division now, and is scheduled for PIR 12/4. They have 180 days to complete boot camp. Depending on where your SR is, there are things they can complete in RCU if it looks like they will time out. It's hard having them in there, and more than any other time in BC - no news is good news. Depending on their age (it's always hard as a parent and not knowing) but ours graduated HS at the beginning of the summer and not being part of medical discussions was SO hard. When you get into the Facebook page, if you think it will help, ask for others to send their support via mail. For the first part of his injury, I sent mail everyday and encouraged everyone I knew to do the same. It's hard for them in RCU because other than basics they are in idle mode. They do have access to a library and with permission can have books mailed to them. Anything I can do to help please feel free to ask.
  • realtreegirl

Thanks for the response Mickatee! I so appreciate your advice! I had held off writing because he said he was going to send me his new address.  If I send one to the old address will they forward it? I want to immediately send encouraging letters but not sure if I need to wait until I get the new address. Congrats on your sons upcoming graduation!!!  My fear is he gets sent home so I am hoping and praying he makes it through. Thanks for the FB info but I am having trouble finding it.

  • sammy1990

until you have the actual address, use his old one and add "now in rcu". he'll get it.
  • Mickatee

They will forward. The address for injured Ship 4 Division 2341
    3600 Ohio St
    Great Lakes, IL 60088-7103

We worried about that too, from the best we can tell, being sent home depends on the severity of their injury and prognosis for healing (including time factors). This is not a boast or a slight to anyone: their attitude and being an active participant in their recovery seems to make a difference. {based on observation). They already have a fair amount of time and money invested in them, they will work with them. We were also concerned about long term damage and an over eagerness to finish by our SR. We have been satisfied with his medical treatment there and impressed with his level of maturity in dealing with it. Having sprained or broken a few bones/joints in my life - their protocol was the same. The first week will be the hardest. In the upside is they do get to call more frequently (usually on Sundays - but not always always)
  • Mickatee

The wonderful lady who is the admin for the FB page is a volunteer. Because PFAs are on M/W/F if it takes her a few days to admit you, don't stress
  • Mamasboy96

My son was sent here this evening, he is so disappointed that he will be missing his 12/31 graduation. He fell on ice last Sunday and was put on light duty, when he went back to doctor today the did not release him. He said recovery was up to four stages and he could be there up to four weeks, maybe longer. He fell on his ankle, and was initially put on crutches the first few days. I was looking forward to seeing him soon, so this is hard for me and him both.

  • hanncam

Just wondering, does anyone know if your recruit can receive a Christmas package in RCU?
  • Ica'smom 1996

I'm desperate because my daughter got both knees with Meniscus or tendonitis. Don't know if she's going to have surgery. She was in FIT when one of the knee was bothering her but when she did the running test again her other knee got bad. She wants to quit Navy and come back home to get well. I told her to stay and do get best but she's still got upset and started to cry. I felt horrible because I couldn't help her. Please I need advice what to tell her next time she calls me. Thanks in advance
  • Ica'smom 1996

Yes,Hanncam! My daughter told me you can send magazines, books, color pencils or markers, small notepads, crosswords or puzzles, etc... Ask her next time what she would like.
  • hanncam

Icamom, my son says the talk in RCU is about quitting "all the time". Think about it, they are down on themselves and feel like they have failed for one reason or another. When my SR called and said he wanted to come home I said, "There's nothing I would love more than for you to come home. But, I would not be a good mother if I didn't tell you that as much as I would love that, you are in the exact place you need to be. God has a reason for everything. Maybe he didn't want you to ship out yet, maybe there was someone you are supposed to meet. I don't know, but I DO know in Whom I trust and He has never let me down about you." I also told him, "You signed a contract and you can't break that just because you've hit a bump in the road. You must start out your life with integrity and honor. Four years will be gone in a flash. And after those four years are done you are going to look at me and say, Thank You."

He says the talk is they don't "feel" like the Navy is there thing. I said it's not about a feeling, you made a commitment now honor it.
That's how we talk to each other. HTH
  • Ica'smom 1996

:'( Thanks so much for this words of encouragement. You have the perfect words to say. When I've talk to her, I was sad as she, but my words didn't come as comfortable like yours. I really wants her to come home but like you said I will feel like a bad mother because I didn't give the words of encouragement I should. She should have bone scan today, have Dr visit on Wednesday and probably on weekends I'll hear from her. I'll let you know how is going. Thanks again!! :)
  • NavyFamily

Does anyone know if this is still the correct division for a recovering SR? I just got the call from my son last night - no time for him to give us an updated address (if he even knows it yet) but I want to get him a letter right away!!

  • Ica'smom 1996

Navy family, is he in RCU! If so, go to battlefield 21 and read the whole thing. It'll tell you where to write to him. There is an address for deferent situations. You can ask lemonelephant, she knows about everything. She's a great help!! My daughter is now in separation because she got hurt her knees again after the 4th faces. She'll probably is coming back home :(
  • Ica'smom 1996

Sorry, my bad... Battle Station - 21. Read everything that way you can understand what will going on.
  • NavyFamily

Lca'smom - I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. That's really tough, and I hope she is dealing with the disappointment well. I'm sure there are great things ahead for her.  When we are young it feels like the world is over - but we know that this is just one step on a long journey. Blessings to you both.

My son has been in the medical unit since about May 10th. He was supposed to graduate on May 20th but ended up with an injury. He had a heel fracture, and recently they found out it was all the way around the heel and said that if he had continued to run on it it would have broken all the way through and he would be in surgery. He was so upset that he didn't graduate with his DIV. Medical unit has been a hard place to be. It's not very positive and he's had ups and downs. I got a call from him today, he said that the Dr. is keeping him in the medical unit for another month due to the severity of the injury, However he is in phase 3 and can do other physical activities at the gym there. They have offered separation multiple times and he has declined. They have told him if it doesn't heal fast enough he will medically separated and it won't be his choice after a period of time, which he believes is 10 weeks in medical. The best thing is that my son was strong and he feels positive about recovering and getting through this. He is not quitting until or unless he is forced to. He has matured so much and although it sucks for him and he would probably rather be anywhere other than there right now, he is persevering. The proudest thing I have to say is that he asked that others write a guy in the medical unit that does not get any mail. He wants to help encourage him, My son is thinking about how he can help others while he's struggling himself. That made my day. So to everyone who has written, supported, prayed, sent well wishes that has been powerful! I appreciate it. It takes a village and this is what life is about. Thank you!

Hello... my husband was just moved to Ship 4 due to a possible ACL/PCL injury. I see this board hasnt had much activity... I'm in need of help getting through this. The thought of another 30 days+ without being able to see him is heart wrenching.

I also have so many questions... does anything about his status/rate/etc change? Will I get to talk to him at all? If he ends up needing surgery, will I be allowed to see him?

Thanks in advance... anyone who is out there.

For those that have followed my story, today was a turning milestone for us as my SR came out of the cast and begin physical therapy next week!

  • Toni

Received a call from my daughter. She was taken out of her division, will not graduate with them and has been placed in a recovery division. I'm assuming I'm in the right place now:). She has a kidney stone. We keep sending letters to her old div address as we have not been provided a new one. Will that mail make it to her?? My heart will break if I find out she's receiving nothing. :( When will we get a new address? I'm lost!

  • Blakesmom

@Toni the letters will eventually make there way to her, but it will be delayed.  I would assume she isn’t placed in RCU. You can try writing using the RCU address. Please PM me if you would like that address. The not knowing is the hard. If it was me, I would send a couple of letters to the RCU address on the chance it makes it to her.

  • Sarah's Human

Anyone heard from their loved ones today??? It's call Sunday and I've yet to hear a word. Getting desperate!

  • mangieo

    @Sarah's Human,

Received a call from our son yesterday about 4PM EST.  We were able to speak for about 20 minutes which happily surprised us!  He went into RCU on his last P day and we thought because of that he was limited to P day privileges.  Sounded well, other than a cold he got while at the RCU.

    Hope you got your call!

  • Sarah's Human

    Hi mangieo!

We did finally get a call. Twenty one minutes and thirty seven seconds (yes, I note the lengths.) Not great news but my boy is doing okay. I hope yours is doing well too!

RCU, in fact the entire building, is one giant petri dish of every microbe brought in from all over the country. I'm waiting to hear my boy caught some oddball virus. ;)

    Thanks!

    SH

  • Hummingbirdxss

My son was set to PIR on 3/9 but got the call yesterday he's been held back with pneumonia.  I'm guessing he's in RCU. I feel completely lost. We were so close to the finish line.  I'm reading that calls come on Sundays. Is it every Sunday or random?  I'll try to get in touch with his recruiter to find out for sure what's going on.  Thank you

  • Hummingbirdxss

But they could confirm that he is in RCU right?

  • Hummingbirdxss

Hello all. Finally heard from my son. His pneumonia was not improving so he's been moved off base to the hospital. 2 IVs running and multiple shots. Unsure how long he will be at the hospital before returning to RCU.  Question:  He said he ordered his pictures right before getting sick at they're at the NEX.  Is there a way for me to contact them to have them mailed out ? Will they hold them for us ?  I really want to get them shipped home if possible.

  • Hummingbirdxss

I was able to call the NEX and pay for the pictures. They are mailing them out this week for us.  Thy would not let me change the address to mine but they're headed to his big brother's house and that's just as good. I'm so relieved.  Now to get my boy healthy again !!

  • Sarah's Human

Thanks for the info Hummingbirdxss! I don't think my boy will have grad photos since they're talking about sending him through battle stations without being ASMOed into a division, but if he does get them somehow I know where to locate them.

Best of luck with your young man and his treatment. Pneumonia is no fun at all. Hopefully he's getting intravenous elephant-gun antibiotics and he'll be back on his feet in no time.

  • Hummingbirdxss

Would the correct mailing address for RCU be :

    Ship 4 Divison 2341
    3600 Ohio Street
    Great Lakes, IL
    60088-7103

Son said he could have cough drops sent to him and want them to get there asap.

  • Sarah's Human

That’s correct Hummingbird. We’ve used USPS second day delivery and that tends to arrive faster than normal mail.
  • Hummingbirdxss

Thank you.  I have them on the way.  He was moved from the VA hospital today back to RCU with 3 days of meds with him.  He said he'll be SIQ for 3 days as well.  I'm just praying it has been enough time and the meds are working.  Thank you to everyone for your kind words and prayers.

  • Sarah's Human

    How is your boy Hummingbirdxss?

  • Seabeemom

Looks like I’ve joined another group. Got the 30 second phone call yesterday that he was not graduating and would call us later. Recruiter found out he’s in RCU with a new date of 5/18. Seems so far away for something minor so I’m hoping he is ok. He had passed everything but the run following bad ear infection. Hopefully they let him call soon. I’m glad to know I can send him letters now.

  • Blakesmom

Welcome Seabeemom! I know this isn't the group everyone wants to join, but alias! Here we all are. Sorry to hear about your SR. Was he injured or is he in FIT to help him with the run?
