This is his second year and his first long cruise

Just wondering if anyone here has ever been on a Tiger Cruise, don't know if I will ever go on one but just curious about some things that happened that was not expected?  PM me if you can give any info, if not, thanks anyway.

  • Ajay

I was wondering how long can sailors be on the boat without sending emails or making calls. I have not heard from my sailor in a over a week and this is the first time so I'm a bit worried. Thank you
  • durrichShip03/Div354

Ajay. Sometimes they close down internet access or limit it ....also they are so busy and their duty rotates . Have faith!  I'm sure your sailor will be in touch when they can.

  • Ajay

Thank you @durrichShip03/Div354. There has been instances like that but it just hasn't gone pass a week, that's why I was asking. If that's normal. All the same, thank you for the information. Really appreciate it.
  • durrichShip03/Div354

Ajay. This is our 2nd deployment on the truman and it's a lot different this cruise. More time "dark" and less time to catch up it seems. We've gone a few weeks due to no comm, shift rotation and other stuff this go round....and it never gets easier.

  • 1Bodyprof

Ajay:  I don't hear from my sailor for about 3 weeks at a time.  He has rotated between day and night shifts and has been studying for the EAWS and PO2 exams.  No news is good news.

My sons driver license is expired and the bmv said I had 6 months before I had to do anything, but I'm not sure when he will be back.  Do I need to do anything so his license won't get suspended or expire?  Anyone have experience with this?

  • Ajay

Thank you all for the information

Hi all - Happy Tuesday!  I posted this in another group but thought it was fitting here as you prepare for homecoming lol!

Anne - my son's (CA) license had expired while he was in VA & his command told him not to worry about it that his military ID (along with his license) was sufficient.  He's since got his VA license....

  • Redsmom

My son hasn't had to report yet to the ship.  But, when he does, should he bring his car?  Will he need it?  Or will the battery just die?

  • Bernapet

Does anyone know if the internet on the ship is down again? Also, was wondering if anyone remembers how long it took the Truman to get to the Persian Gulf? Thanks. :-) Have a great day!
  • Lorabelllee

Redsmom my son has a car off base and he just stored it while he is on deployment. He debated about letting us keep it while he was away but then he wouldnt have had the car for 3 weeks before they left.

Bernapet I don't know about the ships internet as my son isnt on the ship right now. He should be back on board in another month or so. I think it took about a month to get where they are if I remember correctly. One day closer!!

  • Bernapet

I'm just trying to guestimate when they will be leaving the Persian Gulf! Thanks Lorabelllee. :-)
  • JakesMom

The internet is up and running. I received a PM from my son yesterday.

It took them more than a month to get to where they are now because they stopped in Croatia first. My son said they are going to make another port soon and maybe after that they may start heading out of that area.

  • Bernapet

    thank you JakesMom :-)
  • durrichShip03/Div354

Communication has been off and then back on and will probably be that way for the next few weeks......I'd estimate 6 weeks once they pull out of gulf...Hope they are able to see a great port in the Mediterranean on their way out.   Their return last time had them spending some time in Majorca which was awesome for them!!!!!

  • Lorabelllee

LOL Bernapet..well if you saw the little picture/quote that B's posted a day or so ago....hahaha. That's how I feel. Sailor said he might have to be extended as the people relieving them were not ready, then said they were on time..and then maybe they won't join the ship at all and just go straight back to port....ack! You can never nail down the Navy! LOL

  • Bernapet

    Majorca looks beautiful.
  • DonnaEricsMom

B'sNuke . . . that could be any more fitting if it tried.  LOL  It fits exactly what my son goes through at every turn.  Love it!!!

  • JGMom

I want to be there when they arrive.  Hope to hear from my sailor so I can start planning the trip!

  • lmnadelady

I think we are seriously doing a dis service to our sailors trying to pin point dates.  OPSEC  I'm as anxious as all for my sailor to get back, but want them to clear through all the straits easily.   Spring will be here soon, for us northern folk.  So looking forward to that.

  • durrichShip03/Div354

Sorry but I disagree....No violations on this thread ...just discussion about past deployment activity.....as a truman Mom for over 4 years....everything looks good here.

  • Bernapet

Thank you durrichShip03...wasn't trying to mess with OPSEC, just needed someone's memory. :-)
  • durrichShip03/Div354

Bernapet......No problems....everything s good!!!!!   They have just been so busy this time.... ..... which makes time fly for them.....but not us.

  • Bernapet

I just got an email from my sailor, and man did I need it. He said he's busy with quals. He wrote such silly stuff...it makes me know he's growing up, but he still has his great sense of humor!
  • 1Bodyprof

Redsmom: My sailor stored his car near base when leaving for long deployment. He disconnected the battery and it should be fine. A neighbor of mine does that for about 4months at a time and it has always worked for them.
  • DonnaEricsMom

I hope someone can tell me about housing for the sailors.  My son is reporting this month, but like you all know no one's really forth coming with information for him.  Will he have to find his own place to live, or is there housing for them?  He's asked people, but no really tells him anything.

  • durrichShip03/Div354

Donna....his sponsor should help him once he gets to the ship. He might be required to live on the ship for a bit and he will also make friends and get suggestions from his department once he's on the ship. For now I'd just tell him to settle in and he will get that all directed after they return.

  • DonnaEricsMom

durrichShip03/Div354 . . . so that's why they put him in contact with the CS on the ship.  I guess when he arrives on base they'll let him know where to sleep until the ship comes home.  Thank you

  • durrichShip03/Div354

Donna,  there's a support group attached to the ship in Norfolk.  He will probably be assigned one of the barracks until they pull back in.   No worries and the good thing is he will have  a little time to get adjusted to va.

  • DonnaEricsMom

Durich . . . thank you for the information that makes me feel a lot better knowing that there'll be someone there to help him adjust.  He hasn't had the best of luck through his Naval career, he's had set back after set back, so I'm hoping that this new move will be the right one for him.  It will be good for him to have some settle in time before he gets on the ship.

Hi all - Happy Thursday!  You are one day closer.......

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Friday!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

  • Bernapet

Got a call today, I'm doing the happy dance. My sailor could talk fast enough telling me about his adventures. It will be a great week for mom!!!
  • Lorabelllee

We were able to face time with my sailor yesterday all thru dinner. Lately it's just been quick messages here and there so was good to spend some family chat time with him. His time on land is almost over but then who knows? There is always talk of extending his group. Still, hope we can do the tiger cruise if it happens. If not...just looking forward to seeing the ship come in!  One day closer...

  • too tall Joan

Lorabellee glad you got family face time. Happy for you all.

I was excitedly hoping for a tiger cruise until I mentioned it to my sailor and she said it would delay them being home by 3 days. I would just rather her home so for me, I'm hoping no tiger cruise.

FYI I'm not saying don't ask on here what different terms means but you can google search any term and even see pics of various Navy things. Since my daughter joined the Navy Google is my best friend. Lol
  • Lorabelllee

This is probably his last deployment so the tiger cruise would be an adventure. However, he may not even be on the ship. He may fly straight home. I just want to be there when they return as I hear it is quite the experience!

  • kdshow

I've read several comments regarding calls home past few days.  Is it safe to ask "are they on land"?   Or are they calling ship to shore?

My heart fills with joy for each of you that have gotten a call.  Nothing like contact. :)

  • Bernapet

Hey, if we can't know exactly when they all will be home, how do we make hotel reservations? Just wondering! I am getting so excited to see the ship come in, I didn't get to see it leave.
  • sheis22 Ship 02 Div. 932

Bernapet unfortunately you can't make reservations until your Sailor gives you a clue. Then you will know.  I hope that helps.

    One day closer!

  • Momma$

Good morning from the East coast. Does anyone know if this ships return is contingent on the next one leaving port?  We only hear from our sailor by email maybe twice a month.

  • too tall Joan

Momma$ not necessarily. When the Truman went out there hadn't been a presence in that area for several months

Lorabelllee this is my sailors last deployment too but she just wants it over with and home to her husband.

Kdshow those making phone calls right now are either not attached to the ship right now or using ship to shore cards

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

  • sheis22 Ship 02 Div. 932

I was able to Skype with my daughter two days in a row, Yay!  Her birthday just past, 25 years old.  She says everyone kept singing to her which made it a little easier not being home.  Hope all is well with everyone.

    One day closer!

  • Bernapet

Hi sheis22, my sailor turns 20 in a few weeks...I just sent the cakes in a jar. Hope they are good. It's awesome she got sang to, and that you got to Skype with her. I guess we take what we can get, right?
  • sheis22 Ship 02 Div. 932

Yes we do.  I sent her birthday package to her 4 weeks before to be sure it would get to her and she got it 1 1/2 weeks early and of course she couldn't wait to open it.  I waited too long and didn't send the cake in a jar, but I sent store bought cupcakes and she said when she opened the box everyone's eyes were on her. She enjoyed sharing.

  • encourager

I got to speak to my Sailor a few days ago. "Everyday is one day closer" brings me great comfort.
  • Bigmama

Has anyone heard if the Tiger cruise is cancelled?  I cant get my sailor to find out.
