Certainly sounds like a cool idea. I seen them at Lowes yesterday. Think I'll make another trip there today.
Anyone wishing to greet/meet me. I'll be the cool mom using an umbrella, dark shades, big hat and a nifty stay cool scarf/ bandana. Probably sipping on a cool Slushy. I'd love to meet y'all.
Well I guess my son got me on the FRG list in time as I got my homecoming packet. Feeling a little relieved about that. Bernapet- your sailor must be hanging with my sailor. My sailor's having way too much of a good time! I don't want to hear the stories either. Lol. Looking forward to seeing the signs.
You can get similar cooling scarf at sporting goods stores and maybe a Walmart too Also there are Frogtoggs that you can wet and chill. They are more of a hand towel size than scarf so they are a bit bigger.
JackRussell...LOL! I said to my sailor...why don't you just stay on the ship and play chess this port, so I don't have to worry. He laughed for a long time!! :-)
The cooling scarves look awesome! Thanks for sharing Donna ;-)
kdshow - don't worry, you won't be looking like a dork lol! You'll be looking like a proud Navy Momma!
Remember to check in with Wavy News. That's the local station there in VA. Maybe they'll have a livestream. As it gets closer & when the Navy officially releases the date then we should be able to find out more info.....
Somewhere in the discussion there was something about Live streaming of Homecoming. Since my sailor doesn't want me there. How do I bring it up to watch it?
Ok since my sailor has been to busy to add me to FRG mailings I am hoping y'all can answer my question. My parents will be accompanying me and my husband to homecoming. My father, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. He cannot stand for long periods of time. Can we bring a chair for him to sit in. Also Wanting to verify that a small soft sided cooler will be permitted so we can take his insulin.
Jeannine - I'm not 100% sure on the chair but I would think you could take a small portable chair. I do know that you can bring a small soft sided cooler no problem!
Hello everyone, I am not going to be able to attend the homecoming.... my husband has to have surgery in the next two weeks. I'm really sad I can't be there. I hope to see lots of photos posted.
I will be thinking of all the sailors and families.
So sorry to hear this JGMom! Both for your hubby concerning his having to have surgery and that you can't attend! Make sure you can watch it streaming...I think when I know the site..I'll make sure my family knows so they can watch if they want. *hugs*
Good Morning. Is there a link to information on the homecoming? This was my son's first deployment and I am not sure what I need to do if I want to go. Thanks.
Sheila, my son's first deployment too! He never signed me up for the newsletter, so I am going with what I hear from this mom page. I am going with an open mind, hope to see my boy, making the best of not knowing much. Booked a room for a few days, leaving room in the car for him but not expecting too much!
Hey Ladies, I received the newsletter and feel comfortable saying this much since it is really common sense stuff like, wear sunscreen, take an umbrella, be patient since this is a long process, etc. Unless there is more to come, don't sweat it you will be fine! If you go to FRG's Facebook page the proper ID to get in is on this page.
Brandi..I am sure it will be! Comfortable shoes, a hat/visor, sunscreen, light clothing, an umbrella in case of rain or for the sun...a small cooler for drinks...soft sided and small! My first time too but I'm so excited!
Yesterday, I bought a wide brimmed hat, trying to wear red, white, blue clothing! Shorts/sleeveless blouse.
Lots of waiting! Be comfortable!
Water & sunscreen
This is so exciting. I did watch my son come in on a ship about 10 years ago, but this is my daughter and it's different this time around. And I will be by myself, but I see lots of support here and looking forward to all be excited together. She did tell me what pier they will be at, not sure I can say it here. Ask your sailor that question if you did not get a packet because I did not get a packet, but I am on the list she says. Did I miss the emblem that was going to be posted for us to print? My name is Dorie so I will be wearing my Dory fish pin, lol and of course my Navy Mom hat.
Cam'smom is right! Make sure you have an umbrella! There have been times when we were meeting a ship and it poured! Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. :)
Getting close! Those who didn't get the packet. No worries there wasn't any specific information in it. Just general stuff we already know from our page.
starting to freak out a bit, my sailor says he doesn't know which leave he will get yet. He also says he gets 5 days Liberty when everyone else is saying 4. We are driving from IN and have back to back trips now because of the extension. Literally 3 days in between driving back to SC for my granddaughters cheer competition. We will need to shorten that trip if he gets first leave or no one will be home his last couple days. Including his fiancé who also has a family trip obligation. Ugh!
Jacob94mom...Where are you from in IN? I'm leaving from WI and I'm a bit worried about going thru WV. I don't want to drive via PA and past DC, did that a few years ago and the traffic was awful. Your son should know by now what leave he gets..I know mine does. I think the leave is 4 days not 5 as well. Good luck!
We are in South Bend - and my husband says we are going via PA and DC. He'd rather deal with traffic then mountains I guess. I just go along for the ride. Lol
Well my sailor JUST NOW said he got second leave still says 5 days but includes day one (so 4) lol
I knew as soon as I started whining he'd find out. Lol
Anyone know of (and have a # or email for) a photographer who might already be working on the pier for the Truman return that one can hire for a photo or two?
For the sailors who have been in our home, I found a welcome home sign really helped! I'm sure most of you know that, but thought I'd mention it anyway. You can order them or make your own.
Happy for all you moms and dads who are so excited to see your sons and daughters!
We will be traveling from MS. We have a couple stops on the way, but will be there the day before. It's my daughters fiance, so she asked me to take pictures.. lol
I'm enjoying all the information. There is a slight chance we will make it and I am keeping fingers crossed. I will have my camera so I would be happy to take photos for anyone. Once I know for sure I will let everyone know. Have a great week. Really feeling excited.
I'm arriving a day ahead too driving in from DC! I haven't seen the "badge of honor" :-) that Bernapet is making. Someone mentioned trying to get together the evening before to exchange info. Any progress/continued interest on that idea?
The ones that don't have a packet, check out the FRG facebook page. It has the 2014 homecoming info. It is helpful for general info. My son finally signed me up for the newsletter but I haven't gotten confirmation yet. I hope it comes soon. I am driving from Florida. I will be there a day earlier also. Someone said something about a homecoming party/info meeting the night before. Is this true?
I'm waiting for info on the meet and greet thing the night before, but those of us arriving early can meet somewhere too! Maybe a park or lobby at one of the hotels? I'm staying on the beach at VA Beach..but I know very little about the area so if anyone has any ideas please share. So excited!
