You may or may not hear from your sailor, you may or may not see your sailor, but know in your heart that they are thinking of you. Enjoy your Mother's Day!
Hi all - B&C got married! It wasn't quite what they had originally planned but they made it work and we were able to join them in MI for the wedding. 7 of us there and it had to be moved inside due to rain but they did it!. They now have the "renewal" scheduled for 5/16/2021 at the original venue here in CA. Hopefully things will work out for them at that time. I'm just glad we got to be there for it. C was also in the Navy - she was on the Lincoln. (Both are out of the Navy now - finishing up at MSU in December.)
Congratulations to your son and new bride!Such a cute couple, not to mention you and your hubby too! I love your pictures! You gotta just love young love, it can't be stopped. Interesting times we live in but normal will feel so good again! We have our first grandchild due in November, son and wife live in fla, and we've had 2 visits cancelled so far because of all this. When that baby arrives I don't think we can be stopped, quarantine or not. I wonder if our son's know eachother, both nukes on the HST. Mine from '10-'16.
I saw this in one of my facebook groups – “if you have Verizon as your phone carrier they have rolled out a program that automatically takes the Unknown and Potential Spam calls and sends them to your voicemail. This has already been placed on your account. You can call Verizon or use the My Verizon app to opt out of this services. If you have the app you can go to Contact Us and choose We’ll Call You and put Other as reason and choose Call Me as soon as possible.”
This is especially important if you have an SR in bootcamp or a sailor deployed. You don’t want to miss any calls!
I don't know about other carriers but I can vouch for this happening with Verizon as I have Verizon.
ShellyMarie - yes the group is sort of quiet lately. I tried to keep things going when my son was on the Truman but he's out of the navy now. Usually chatter will start up when they deploy...keep posting and maybe you'll get some activity going!
Hi everyone and welcome shellymarie. It did get quiet around here, use to be very active. B's Nuke mom do you know when PatD started the group? I hope everyone is well!
From what I can see it looks like PatD started the group around the summer of 2009 or maybe a little earlier. It's unfortunate though because she is no longer a member on here all of her posts have been deleted.
That's why it's so important if you decide to leave N4M that you don't delete your profile - everything will disappear!
I remember you jbird the only time we saw the Truman arrive years ago maybe 2015? In Norfolk. We all had name tags in the bleachers. It may have been a July. We all posted so much then. Was that the beginning of all the navyformoms page? If anyone knows? My son has died a year already. He was 5 years on the Truman. A very bad heart. Many of his buddies did too. That is why I don't post much. Too hard on Navy Moms all around or we have been ill ourselves. I love to look at posts about reunions, the passion we have for our family and friends serving brings me comfort. Thank you to all who serve and the mom's now. May you reunite safely with your loved ones and am always praying for you.
My son was on the Truman in 2015 and yes he is out now. His wife was also a nuke but she was on the Lincoln and she's out now too. They live in MI and just bought a new house with their GI Bill.
I had posted a discussion in 2015 up above when the Truman deployed.
The Navy for Moms website has been around since 2008. I didn't join until 2012.
julie01 - you said your son died? I'm so very sorry to hear this. And you say many of his buddies too? This is quite sad.
Sending prayers to you and everyone with family serving.
B'sNukeMom I remember you had to wait the longest for them to get off the ship. It was a super hot day. So glad that your son is married and happy with someone who knows the Navy life ways. I hope they are happy in MI and you can see them in the near future. Yes, my son has some really great Navy friends that are newly married with babies in their lives as civilian life unfolds. He has passed over a year now so we are in the TAPS.org program available to any personal military loss in case.
I’m still here! I was there that hot July day! I also met a few moms at the gathering the night before. My son has been off the Truman for a year now. He is now serving shore duty at Oceana. April 15th marked his 7th year with the Navy. He has two more with this contract but will most likely reenlist as he is unsure what he wants to do as a civilian. He is married now and bought a beautiful home in Suffolk. His wife is the manager of a vet clinic close to their home. They are raising 3 cats, 2 dogs, two snakes, a gecko, a koi pond and a few other fish. No time for babies! Lol
So good to see some of these names! I was there to greet my sailor wearing my NFM badge too. I don't think I could have gotten through that first deployment without my NFM support group!! My sailor discharged last year. Found employment in the midst of Covid-19 and has adjusted back to civilian life.
julie01 - yes, the nukes are usually one of last ones off the ship but we weren't at homecoming. Our son had already flown back to Norfolk before the ship returned. We visited him before deployment though.
Hope everyone is having a nice Sunday. We are having a very warm and windy day here in SoCal!
Jacob94mom - your son and DIL sound like B&C. They have 2 dogs, a cat, 2 different lizards - I think one is a gecko, a turtle and a rat. C is finishing up her Master's Degree (in wildlife stuff) and B just finished his undergrad degree (well they both did in December). We wait patiently for grandbabies.....
I'm was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me. My son is having trouble with qualifications. I'm not sure what that means, and if anyone has any suggestions on how I can help or be supportive.
ShellyMarie - your son is a nuke, correct? Even after they get to their ship (or sub) they will continue to have qualifications. It's a never ending learning process. When they graduate nuke school they are a "Qualified Nuclear Reactor Operator" but then they have to requalify on the actual carrier. So much to learn and do. He could be having difficulty getting the time to work on his qualifications - he'll still have his job to do along with working on quals. I don't remember the timeline to complete quals but it is a fairly good amount of time. Best you can do is just keep reminding him that he made it this far and he can do this! Let him know it's not like there is a finish line - it's just a never ending learning process lol!
Continue to offer up love and support and he'll get through this. Being his sounding board is probably one of the best things you can do for him. Hang in there!
B'sNukeMom, thank you so much for explaining this to me. My son has only mentioned it a couple times. I know I am a sounding board for him, I just worry how much of this is just venting and if any of it is a real problem. He mentioned having trouble finding people to sign off on his quals. I guess that's a common problem?
Yes, finding people to sign off on his quals could be a problem but he needs to be persistent! And yes, he might just be venting to you - that's ok though - let him vent. But tell him not to give up no matter how frustrating it gets.
Hi thesuperm72 - here's some info I posted on previous Truman deployments. It's straight from USPS and should answer most of your shipping questions. As to how long packages take, well that's anyone's guess lol! It could be a couple of weeks to a month. Don't send anything that is irreplaceable because you just never know. Also, if you send any liquids put them in separate zip lock bags. Also, you should line your entire box inside with a trash bag - put everything in and then seal it up. It's not uncommon for someone else's box to have liquids in it and spring a leak and run all over your box. Don't take the chance. And use lots of tape to seal it up - more is better!
Here's the link to theUSPS "Click & Ship". You can get free boxes/tape etc. from them too.
Keeping our great sailors in prayer as they head out. So grateful for each one. I didn’t realize the USS Jason Dunham was a part of the Truman Fleet, he was from my area. Having had a son on the Truman It’s pretty cool that the Dunham is part of the Truman fleet. Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happiest of holidays to all!!
My DS is on the Truman—with VFA 211. It is hIs first deployment (and ours)! Thank you for the info on shipments. Please add ideas on what to send and anything else to help us through the next 6 mos. I have gotten some emails—very great. Where did you all go to find the pictures? Thanks for any encouragement!
