I’m so sorry that your son was caught up in that mess. My daughter told me a bit about it because she was masted for some relatively minor offenses and received 18 days restriction at MILDIV. She will finish up restriction on Sunday and just found out that she will continue in the nuke program being put into the class that is where she left off. Her account of the big mess is that a few of the Sailors will be separated from the Navy, but most are now at MILDIV serving from 18-45 days. The decision about returning to the program or not will come about 1 week before the end of their restriction at a review. Best advice for sailors in MILDIV is to do the work given to you without complaint, be ultra respectful to everyone, even their mates and those in supervisory positions. Although they cannot have any of their own electronics, there are phones for Sailor’s’ use after the workday is over. The calls are short but important. If you see a call coming in from an unknown Charleston number - take it!!! My daughter really relied on our short talks each evening to get her through this experience. My heart and prayers go out to each and every sailor and their loved ones though this hard time. The roller coaster ride continues. Take a deep breath, hang on for dear life, and ride it out. Also know that you are not alone in this and either is your sailor. My daughter found great comfort in talking to the chaplain - she said “He’s a wonderful compassionate man”. Hang in there and let us know how to support and help you.
Hugs
haoo 168, prayers for you and your sailor. Hang in there, Sea Sister! Islandgirl, your information is very recent and underscores how easy it is for our sailors to make a decision they wish they could take back. It sounds like your sailor is coming out of it OK. Whatever happens, it's not the end of the world and we can still support our sailors as they move forward, no matter what that looks like. Hugs to all my Sea Sisters who are navigating this upsetting time. We're behind you!
Velvetenor- I was in the same spot for the holidays. As my sailor explained it Leave starts at 00:01 on the day, whether you leave a that time or not and end a 23:59 on the last day. It is a straight x number of days and the day of the week or even holidays do not count. We planed my sailor was home for 8 days that included Christmas and part of 2 weeks. 1 day was travel and 1 day for cushion given we live in the north and flights might get canceled out. We also booked the first flight out at like 6:20 am and the last flight back so he had as much time as possible with us.
That was our first experience with this and I am trying to get my head around it again for A school grad leave. In this case it is a question of does leave start Friday after the ceremony or can he have liberty on the weekend like normal and then leave starting on the Monday following. We would like to spend a bit of time in Charleston but he wants to be home as much a possible. Either way what every day he leaves Charleston he will return 9 days later for that cushion
Hey everybody,
I’ll be in Charleston staying on Isle of Palms March 4-11 with 3 other friends. They are all interested in plantation tour, city carriage ride, historical tours and of course good ears and drinks. Can any of you offer advice or favorites or not-to-be-missed sights? I appreciate you all and I’m so glad I found this group. Aloha!
Islandgirl - we stayed on Isle of Palms twice and loved it. Loved the carriage ride and the harbor tour. Couple of our favorite places to eat were Reds Ice House and Fleet Landing.
Ladies, it has been a long day on my feet at our local Friends of the Library sale and I am headed back tomorrow.
Hugs to you sea sisters who have been or are going though difficult times.
Islandgirl - glad to hear things are looking up for you sailor daughter. If you go to Charleston's tourism page on the internet you can also find a lot of things.
I will say, the parking meter pricing has changed and I think they charge you even on Saturday evenings. We never figured out the parking garages, but they are there. We usually went down on Church street and parked at a meter. If you need a restroom when walking around in that area, there is one up a little bit inside the walk around indoor mall shops. They close after like 6 pm on Saturday, but there is a hotel there and you can go in there and they have public restrooms, because the others seemed to be closed in the evening.
I bumped the sightseeing in Charleston discussion back into the discussion queue above. There are others, but this is the one that I know has some recent ideas.
And there are some in the Hotel, Villa discussion as well, I believe.
Ok - hopefully it's not that bad for a Monday lol. I'm counting down the days until hubby and I leave for Cabo....can't wait.
IslandGirl - we toured the Magnolia Plantation - it was very nice and I would recommend it. Be sure to see the Angel Oak Tree too. And of course Foley Beach is fun. The Ghost Walk tours look like fun too (although we didn't do one).
Welcome to our newest member ~ hanna2020! hanna2020 is a wife to a future nuke!
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. Also take a look at the Pages (19) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all". And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Hello and happy Monday! My sailor arrived in GC this weekend. Yay! (An extra week in GL was frustrating, he said.) One thing he may not have figured out yet was getting the Comcast account set up. Does anyone know about this? And I must say, all of the information that has been posted on NukeMoms over the years has been extremely helpful. I don't know what I would be doing if I didn't have the knowledge I've acquired over the past few weeks reading the posts. Thank you!!!!
Hi Marianne - and welcome again! I think when B was at GC he and his roomies went in on the Comcast together - but someone may have already had the account set up. He should be able to ask around and someone should be able to give him some insight! Glad you've had time to read up on the info - there's lots of it lol! Feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to get you a quick answer. I usually defer to the newer moms because it's been awhile since B was there - but one way or another we'll help you out!
Curious if anyone currently on here has a nuke in prototype in Ballston Spa or is everyone in GC? I know they still have prototype there - B's mentor and good friend of his and C (she'll be in their wedding) is an instructor there.
Hanne2020- Welcome!! We are glad you have joined us. We have several wives on here, they may not post much, but I am sure if you need to reach out to someone they will be happy to help you also.
I was suppose to be attending our Blue Star Mother's meeting tonight, but our leader was sick, so we have postponed it until next week.
Just got a letter from my son, I actually had to send a self addressed stamped envelope and start the letter for him. Hi Mom and Dad. I was just happy to get anything from him but in his defense he has been really busy. Anyway he got his classification Nuclear ET so it looks like he will be headed to Goose Creek in 2 weeks as long as he passes battle stations. I am excited for him, that's all he has talked about for 8 years. So glad he never gave up on his dreams.
Northwoodsmom - I had to chuckle at your statement about starting a letter to yourself. I did actually send a few SASE to my son at first and then he told me he had plenty of paper and envelopes (they sell a small set at the NEX), but he did appreciate me sending him stamps. I sent some in his wallet to begin with. Yes, they are very busy at BC.
My sailor is an ETN3, so if you have any questions feel free to ask. There are several active moms of the various rates on here.
Hi Marianne - when my son got to Goose Creek a few weeks ago, they gave the sailors information on how to set up a Comcast account for internet/wifi, so he went in with his roommate and they set it up together.
Hi Northwoodsmom - my son is also ET, and he will be starting his A school classes next week. It took him about 4 weeks to "class-up" once he got there, so expect about that same amount of time for your son to be in INDOC. He will have to go to "briefs" where they get information on the base and services, etc. and then they will give him jobs to keep busy (mine did cleaning of barracks and landscaping) until class starts. They do have down time in the evenings and on weekends, though, which is so nice after the rigors of boot camp!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome!! I am a little confused with how this site works still lol, I am not very tech savvy. It has been hard to find other groups for nuke families, so I am excited to have found this.
Thanks NancyJo! Apparently she wrote a really nice study guide that they are considering sharing with other sailors. I'm just super excited for her. Of course, she's all chill about it. That girl.
hanne2020 - there are lots of groups on here but some are not real active. Our nuke moms group is one of the more active ones so you should be able to get answers to most of your questions here. Once you receive your husbands letter and know his PIR date you can join that group too. In the meantime, don't be afraid to ask questions and look around the N4M site.....we are here for you!
And be sure to join the boot camp group - I left the link in the welcome message on your page!
JayDee - Congratulations to your daughter!! Job well done!
ProudOfK - Thanks for asking, I was wondering as well, but just logged on.
NancyJo - Thanks for the link. How are your grandchildren doing? Mine is past her 2 months and in her pictures I can tell she is growing. I said something to my daughter and I guess she needed that encouragement, because she said she is still so skinny. I reminded her that she is constant motion like her aunt.
hanne2020 - It will take awhile to get use to this site. If you are on your phone it can be more difficult than on a computer. Like B'sNukeMom said, we are more than willing to help you out with any information you need.
Skippyredhead and NavyNukeMom if you see this message and aren't too busy with your little ones, you might reach out to hanne2020 if you are able. Thanks!! I hope all is going well with your families.
