This site is for families and friends of Salilor Recruits with PIR THURSDAY, December 29, 2011. This is a great way to share information, concerns and to connect as we continue the journey through bootcamp to PIR and beyond.
Encouraged by a facebook post from one of my sons good friends that is in Nuke school (went thru bc Aug/Sept). Love this kid!
Hey Mrs. ----! We were talking about boot camp in class today and it made me think of what yall are going through. The first two weeks suck, but after that its all down hill and you'll be getting phone calls and letters more then you expect. I hope youre doing alright, if you have any questions just ask away. Hooyah 021.
The 4th week of training (the turnaround week), which is usually about 5-6 weeks after they have left for bootcamp, is the time where you really see a change. They have accomplished alot by then, and know they can do this. The "breakdown" process is over and the "buildup" process has begun. The yelling is not so much anymore...and they now understand that the RDCs are there to help them, not make them miserable. It is truly a wonderful change to see in them!
dianner, Thank you for the information you have given me. It is all becoming a bit easier for me as each day goes by. I ended up waiting for the form to come in the mail before I sent her letters, but it came the same day as I got the address from our recruiter, but it was a bit off on the address
TansMom, that's awesome! You are so right, hold your head up, you are the awesome mom of a future Navy sailor! Hooyah! (and you were just kidding about the singing birthday card, right, lol? )
Yes, I hope you were kidding about the singing card, TansMom...or your SR may be a little upset! HA! Sometimes they have to do IT (Intensive Training) until the battery runs out on it....uh oh....
Ladies, I agree with diannep (and I'm pretty sure that Tansmom was kidding), but please do not send any musical cards to your SR's. They will be embarrassed and possibly be a reason for their division to get IT. Also, when you do send letters or cards, please keep your envelopes white and do not write any cute messages on the envelopes. Since the holidays are coming, please also remember to tell all your friends/family not to send any packages/cookies, etc. You wouldn't want them to get in trouble or to be made an example of in their division.
My daughters b-day is on the 11th of this month. I want to send her a card, but hesitant? Anyone have advise on this? I do not want to cause her any problems or the division problems, but after all she will be turning 18.......
RuthL - I'm not sure what grade you teach, however, I write a bunch of stuff about famous veterans to motivate the deppers on my website (NavyDEP.com). I also post alot of that information here at N4M too.
So if you need some stories to share, just go to this link....
Good morning everyone! NO FORM LETTER AGIAN! Geez!
Oh well! I am not gonna let it get me too upset! No news is always good news at this point. ( well form letters are kinda needed) I do a thing at work where I find small sayings or humorous diddies and write them on a eraser board that is in our staff room. It kinda gives me a inner giggle or an uplifting "ah"! So here we go....
Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant?? I'm halfway through my fish burger and I realize, Oh man....I could be eating a slow learner."
@ diannep, thank you for the advise I am sure she would like to get a card for her birthday. at first she said no then she said yes, so that is where I was getting torn as to what to do
It's only been 4 days since my son left for BC. Still trying to deal with not being able to talk to him on a daily basis, but it is getting better. I've been using the day-to-day activities list to help me cope....it's nice knowing what he's going through during the day. I called his recruiter today to get his address and found out he is with ship 012, division 030. I was also told that A school for corpsman has been changed. It will no longer be in Great Lakes. They are moving it to San Antonio, Texas. As of now (I'm sure this will change, but his recruiter was pretty sure this is the way things will work) after PIR on 12/29 we will be able to spend time with him during the day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (he will have to report back at night) and he will fly to Texas Monday morning. Hope this helps all those with SR's that are going corpsman.
YAY Dianne! That is sooooooo great! Praying that it is a fun and relaxing time for you...you deserve some time for yourself. Always praying for you and your family dear!
ilovemysailor - I hope you don't mind...I'm going to copy and paste the RTC info over hear...thank you so much for providing the link. It will still be good to check the link as time goes on as folks will ask questions.
I will also make a Discussion for it up above with RTC's post and the link, k?
Holiday leave for Training Group 6 (those graduating Dec. 29) will begin at 1600 (4 p.m.) Dec. 29 and expire at 2359 (11:59 p.m.) Jan. 8. All recruits will depart RTC that same day, whether they are staying at Great Lakes or going out of state for A School. Recruits graduating Dec. 29 will have three options following graduation:
1) Not request leave and go directly to their A School as planned, departing from RTC.
2) They may have someone pick them up and stay within 75 miles of the base. Airline tickets will be issued from Great Lakes to their next command where their A School is located. There will be no reimbursement for local transporation. So, if they go somewhere within 75 miles of the base, they must pay for their own transportation to return to Great Lakes.
3) They depart from RTC and go on leave out of the area. They will do so at their own expense. They are responsible for getting to their A School at their own expense. Once they are at A School, they can then file for a travel claim. They will only receive travel pay at the government rate for what the flight would have cost to ship them from Great Lakes to their A School. So, they are paying for their own flight home and will only receive reimbursement for the flight from home to their A School, and that reimbursement will only be equaled to the cost of what it would cost to fly from Great Lakes to their next command. Should a recruit not graduate for any reason, the command will not reimburse any travel costs.Recruits will be instructed and given the opportunity to purchase their own airline tickets if they choose to go home. Please coordinate/communicate with your recruit if you are going to be purchasing their airline tickets for them. They will instruct you where you will need to send their itineraries here at RTC.
Craig@ Thanks for the infromation on famous vets. I teach 6th grade. The kids will love it! I learnded alot too. John Dillinger......news to me. Do I have you permission to print some of this for my class? Of course I might have to "black out" a line or 2. They are only 11.
Black out a couple lines?.... Geez, the 11 yo in my neighborhood know more curse words than I do, and I'm a sailor...
Any of the stuff I write you are welcome to use. Hopefully this will put a small idea in their heads and maybe they will want to be a sailor later on in life. I write that stuff to motivate the deppers on my website. We have alot of cool sailors that most people don't even know about....
Finally received my form letter today! Whoopiee! BUT wouldn't ya know- after I have written AND sent several letters- I get the form letter and the address is WRONG. oops! I am gonna have to do some double time and get some letters sent tomorrow. He sounds really happy and doing great. It really is amazing in what little they can write we can really decipher and know what they are feeling. Nighty Night y'all! see ya in the AM with another quote.
I read on the RTC FB page that they try their very hardest to deliver mail before giving up and that usually it just gets delayed a week or two, but gets there!
Let me ask you... When a sailor is on a ship, which saying would get them to pay attention?
Seaman Recruit Jones can you please come here and shoot down the missile that is coming at us?
Seaman Recruit Jones get your @ss over here and shoot down that MF missile or our @ is grass.
I know I would really appreciate the CO if he used option #2. Just to protect my @.
-----------------
With that said, you do realize that we still have a captured commissioned U.S. Navy warship still in the hands of the enemy? It's the only one. The USS Pueblo. Now, do you think it was appropriate for the sailor to give "the bird" to their captures? HELL YES! I will not bow down to the enemy. Much like them, I would also give them the bird.... It's the Navy way.... Some civilians can try to limit our freedom of speech, however, we are here to defend it! Just saying....
I think I may post something I wrote for the deppers on my website about the USS Pueblo. This will give Ruth another story to tell her 6th grader.... Ruth, you go girl!!!! You promote the Navy to those kids.... Let them know, "We will never forget".....
So I am looking at the day by day and I am trying to figure out what week & day my daughters is. She sent her form letter on 10/28 & she arrived on 10/26. Can somone help me on this one. Tansmom & I think they were on 1-3 yesterday, but it does not seem right I keep trying to figure it all out, so I can keep up with her week & days
Thanks y'all for the info on the mail. Knew I should have waited, but just could not fathom him seeing everyone getting mail and mine did not make it to him. Guess it might be that anyway. Oh well- letters will be getting to him shortly. haha

Awwww....Craig....come on. How about saying: Get that blasted missle out of the sky or we're done???? Wouldn't that work????? Maybe? :-)
My Dad said (who never cursed until he got Alzheimers, and then a word slips out sometimes...kind of weird) always said that when he was in the Army Air Corp, they were not cursed at often...during WW 2. Of course, back then, the general population didn't curse as much as goes on now. Aye yah yah....
nataliesmom: If she just arrived on 10/26, she may just be starting week 1. Maybe not yet. Depends on the length of processing days. Did she give you a week/day number? That is the best way to keep up with it. Jot it down if she mentions a date and week/date number. Remember, weekends do not count in training day numbers, and days go 1-5. Holidays do not count either. They will have a number of holidays in this training period so their day number will constantly be shifting back. My son was asmoed for a week when there (he arrived 3 days before Thanksgiving 2 yrs ago), so he was there for 10.5 weeks. But even without the asmo (setback in training), he would have been there 9.5 weeks, longer than the normal bootcamp length and that was because of the holidays.
momshousedivided: Yep, that is why we tell you all to wait for the form letter address before mailing letters. Recruiters' addresses many times are not exactly right, but the letters usually find your SRs anyway.

I don't think they allow singing cards! :/ I read that they were an object of RDCs making fun of recruits :( So they stopped allowing them.
