You're very welcome! The weather should be pretty nice then!

  • mrsb

I'm hoping to see some pretty fall colors!  Everything just turns brown and falls off out here!

  • Annette

Where is "out here" for you? Not much fall here in So Cal either...I miss fall, told my son I am jealous.

  • mrsb

Ha!  I'm in Rancho Cucamonga!!!  Sooo tired of the heat!!!

  • mrsb

I guess I thought you were still on the East Coast!  Silly me!!

  • Annette

I wish! Have lived here in CA since 89. Sailor was born here. We live in Laguna Niguel. Lucky me I am going to Yosemite in October, hopefully there will be some pretty colors!

  • mrsb

We moved here in 97 from Illinois-I didn't even know about RTC when we lived there-all those little kids kept me busy!!  We lived in WA before that; all my kids were born there.  OR before that!  One more move planned-back to Oregon in a few years.  Our plan is to live in Bend-we bought a little, bitty house in the historic part of Bend; going to tear it down and build a bungalow.  I can't wait!!

  • DeAnn

I agree mrsb... I am tired of this heat too... We are supposed to be into the 100's by mid week and no breeze off the ocean is expected either... it's going the opposite way so says the news :(

  • DeAnn

Thanks for all the airport info. We are planning on going to the meet n greet at sarge's and i am actually going to copy and paste all this infor into a doc. so that I can take it with me.  I actually am doing this for all the info i get because so much of it I know I will need in the future and that way i have a place for resources :)  Thank god for the internet ... What did people do before Navy4Moms and all the facebook groups ?

  • mrsb

DeAnn, I didn't know you were so close either!  Not exactly close I guess, but all in So Cal!!!  I joined the Inland Empire Navy moms group; the next time we get together I'll let you and Annette know-maybe you could join us!

It's supposed to be 100 here today!!!  and humid-I hate humidity!!

  • navymom2013

Hi!  I just thought I would get on and say hello.  I am in middle gulf side of Florida.

95 degrees today and no rain in sight - feels like 113 - so says the news.  I just went out to my son's car to put on front seat covers and almost died.  Had to come in and get a drink after one was almost on.  Talk about brown - well - we don't have a change of seasons and the mosquitos come out during the day by the water where I live.  We mow twice a week now and these truly are the dog days, however, they don't want to go out either.  Too Darn HOT!  A/C in January.

    I need snow.

  • mrsb

OMG, you mow twice a week!!!  I'd ditch the grass!!!  My lawn is half dead anyway-I'd love to rip it out and just have planting beds.  One of these days!!  I've only been to Florida once; way too sticky for me!!!

  • DeAnn

mrsb... i would love that :)  I'm not that far. I am in Brea now. Moved from Irvine last year. Bought a house double the size for less than what we sold our house for in Irvine. Irvine is nice... a lot cooler (closer to the ocean) but with all the grandkids coming along (5 boys and 1 girl)  and we still have another wave to follow probably in the next 6 years I am going to guess. Anyways suffice it to say our little 2 bedroom 1000 sq ft. condo in Irvine wasn't working. My daughter goes to Univ of LaVerne. So I am out that way at least once a week. I grew up in Chino so I know the I.E. very well. Graduated from Chino High.

  • DeAnn

haha navymom2013   I keep telling my friends out here that Florida needs to take their weather back because we are tired of it :)

  • mrsb

DeAnn, I will be happy to include you!!  It's always nice to meet other Navy Moms!  There were only 3 of us that met for lunch a couple of weeks ago. Well, 4-a husband came along too!  I may just put something out for mid-October, after your son's PIR and after my and fathomoms trip to Groton!!!  We'll all have stories to tell!!

  • stylist613

Alsmom remind me again what division u r, I cant keep people straight lol
  • DeAnn

perfect mrsb... i will want to hear those stories since I will be traveling that navy road in the future :)

  • ProudNavyMom#1

You GO mrsb!!! So awesome to see you all get together and talk about your Sons and all!! God bless!

  • Rascal73 (Ship 11 Div 279)

I'm going up the first week of October too! Very excited to see my kid! We are thinking of heading to NY for the day and possibly night the weekend after BESS grad.
  • mrsb

That's great Rascal73!  Maybe we can all get together!!  Our plan is to be back in Groton on the 5th, take the boys and some of their friends out for pizza and hang out until we leave the next evening.  I'll be in touch with you!!

ProudNavyMom, you should move to So Cal!!!

  • stylist613

How long after they get to groton before we can go visit
  • mrsb

stylist613, I don't know that there is a time limit.  We had planned on taking this trip last year but it didn't work out somehow.  Our oldest son is going with us as he and my husband are big into Revolutionary War history.  Maybe ask one of the veteran moms on the BC website?

  • Annette

mrsb, you and your Revolutionary War buffs should go to Fort Griswold in Groton. Important battle there involving Benedict Arnold, and it's not far from the Sub Base!

  • stylist613

We only live 5 hrs away
he will get there oct 19. Was wondering whst happens over thankgiving and Christmas
  • mrsb

Oh I'm pretty sure we will!  My husband has been to Lexington and Concord, Quebec City, all over but we haven't.  I'm really looking forward to this trip!!!

  • Annette

No time limit, but if they have phased up they can get off base on weekdays and stay out later on weekends. We got onto base and saw our son a few days after he arrived, once we arrived with his car. He was not able to leave base at that time, at least not on weekdays.

  • mrsb

stylist613, I'm pretty sure they have a limit on the distance they can travel from the base for a while.  I know that at Christmas the school is closed so they can come home-I can't wait for that either!!!  My son said he will probably just stay there for Thanksgiving.  :(

  • Annette

yes, the limit, even when phased up to yellow card, is 25 miles on liberty. Leave is different, but they won't be taking leave for awhile.

  • DeAnn

I just read that they can request leave to come home at christmas. A sailor there told me school shuts down and if you have enough leave you can come home during that time. He said they earn 2.5 days per month so my SR should have enough to fly home for Christmas :) I'm thinking if he is able to leave the base I may fly up there for Thanksgiving :)

  • mrsb

That would be great DeAnn-I'm sure your son would love it!  You could always get a suite with a kitchen and make your own Thanksgiving.  Just a thought!!  :)

  • stylist613

Deann I was thinking the same thing, where r u from
  • mrsb

DeAnn and Annette, there is a luncheon planned for October 12th at Las Campanas at the Mission Inn at 11am for the Inland Empire Moms Group.  I wanted to invite you to come to, I mean you're in So Cal after all!  If you would like to attend please go to the Inland Empire Group and join, and let Darsete know you will be there.  I hope you can come, I am so looking forward to meeting more So Cal Navy Moms!!!

  • DeAnn

Stylist I'm in So Cal. City of Brea. About 15 min from Disneyland. MRSB that is a wonderful idea about a hotel with a kitchen. I'm gonna chat with him about that :)
And I would live to come to the lunch. I love the mission inn. I got engaged there on New Year's Eve in the Cinderella carriage ride :)
  • DeAnn

Where do I find the inland empire group? This site is soo much different than FB
  • mrsb

Good morning DeAnn!  On the main N4Ms page, type Inland Empire in the search box and it should come up.  :)

  • DeAnn

got it mrsb. Thank You :)

  • Sharon

My Sailor will be staying in Groton after graduation in October.  Looks like it's frequent flyer miles for me for the next 4 years. Emotional night. SAD but oh so PROUD.

  • ProudNavyMom#1

    Congratulations Sharon!!!

  • mrsb

Sharon, it couldn't be all bad!  Groton is one of the bases my son listed to be stationed at when he graduates next year.  It's a heck of a long way from SoCal though.  Congratulations!!!

  • Shannon

My son slao is graduating from sub school this morning! He already has.. he sent me a picture holding his certificate but, he said he couldn/t take pics in the building.. no cameras allowed.. Uggh!

  • Annette

T I mom, no streaming of BESS graduation. Someone was there for BESS grad and took some pictures, but that was yesterday. Check out Sub School (BESS and A school) on FB

  • amandamomof4

My son just called and said they got their orders today. He got Norfolk VA on the Albany. Kind of disappointed he didn't get San Diego even though he is second in his class... He sounds really excited though

  • stylist613

hello veteran moms, do any of your boys have a car with them? trying to decide if my sr will need his. i just read that fishing is great there and he loves to fish

  • Annette

stylist613, My son has his car. He PIR'd on Aug 2, we drove his car from CA to GL, then up through Canada to get some ancestor oil portraits to hubby's Aunt, then down to CT. We left his car at my nephew's house, who lives right up the road. Once he phased up, he was able to get his car. Our son is going to be there close to a year and so we decided to make a nice vacation out of it. I know he appreciates having it, even if he can't go further than 25 miles yet. But I can tell you also that most guys in sub school don't have a car (I dated a few there, 100 years ago or so, and I would end up picking them up!). I am sure my son will be carting around some buddies, hopefully they will help with gas. And if he gets stationed somewhere in states, he can drive himself there. Your SR won't necessarily "Need" it, but he would probably appreciate having it. That being said, there are buses and stuff, and usually someone has a car that is willing to drive around.

  • navymom2013

My son will have his car in two weeks and hopefully will also have his blue card so he can come and go as he likes.  He has told me that alot of the guys don't have a car so when he goes somewhere, he says he will ask for a little gas money and take whoever wants to go with him.  The only thing I worry about is a car load of guys and an accident happening.  Worry!  I do that real well.

He is 28 now and I really think I need to worry less.  I am getting too old for this mess!!!!

In the 1940's  my mom had a Cord Convertible automobile and she was a Wave in Pensacola (Rosie the Riveter).  She almost got shot by a farmer in a field of watermelons with her girlfriends from base.  So I guess, what will be will be. Just make sure they have good insurance that covers passengers.  After all,

they hang together as a team!!!  Wait until they all share bunks, toilets and war stories on a sub for 6 months.

  • Sharon

amandamomof4. I wonder if our sons know each other? We were hoping for San Diego too.  My son was number one in class and didn't get it. He warned us ahead of time that he didn't think it was going to happen. He had been hearing things from higher ranking personnel.  I was hoping they were wrong. He is stoked about his assignment too.

  • Shannon

My son has his car at Groton. He drives a few guys around. He drove from Goose Creek to New London and he is very thankful that he has a car. He takes a few guys around and they always offer a little gas money. He told me never has had to even ask. They all go out or together as a team.

  • mrsb

Annette, how long did it take for you to drive from CA?  Did you drive straight through or take your time?  I'm just wondering as my son is hoping his sister will want to make a road trip and drive his car out there.  I won't let her do that alone though!!

  • amandamomof4

Sharon my son is an FT but it sounds like all the a school classes work together so they just might know each other. His class is set to graduate oct 18th

  • Annette

mrsb, we left Anaheim, CA (about a 30 minute drive north for us) after picking up hubby from work there, at about 2:45 Monday afternoon. We arrived GL around 12:30 Thursday. We spent the first night in Cedar City, Utah, the 2nd night in Sterling, CO, and the 3rd night in Iowa City, Iowa, right near the Illinois border. We traveled well into the night that first night, to get some miles in, got to hotel around 11:00. Up early most mornings with breakfast at hotel then on the road. We traveled until dinner time the other 2 nights (had our hotel reservations already), Iowa being our shortest of the full days. From GL after PIR, we headed through Michigan to Canada, hubby's aunt lives there and we had some oil portraits of ancestors that we had acquired from my late MIL, we wanted to get those to her. We arrived there in early evening, maybe around 5 or 6. We spent the night there, and left after lunch the next day. From there we stopped to sight see at Niagara Falls then headed down the NY thruway. We spent that night somewhere in NY, up early the next day and headed to MA, where we stopped for lunch and a few hours visit with friends, and then into CT, arriving about 7:30 to my nephew's house, right near base. To sum it up, drove straight through, a full week of traveling. Take off the trip to Canada, can make the trip from CA to CT in about 5 days if you drive straight through. Our stops were just restroom and gas, with lunch at fast food. We picked hotels that included a continental breakfast. I think when we moved here to CA from VA, we took about 5 days, and that was stopping at the Crater and Grand Canyon. Where do you live?
