We are going to retire in Bend, OR.  It's gorgeous there too, but not as wet!  We lived all around Puget Sound for 13 years and loved it.  We would probably still be there except for the job offer my husband got in Chicagoland.  From there we moved to So Cal and I can't wait to get to Oregon now-hopefully sooner than later!

  • lenrose

mrsb how long has your son been in Groton? I really don't know what to expect. I just hope my son will keep me informed. I thought it was so hard for me because it has always just been the two of us. Now that he is in the Navy I am alone. He is my family. But I realize it is hard for all of us mommas no matter what our story is. I guess I should be thankful I am not married, I can't even imagine what I would put him through.....lol
  • lenrose

SoProud thank you for your comment. This sight is truly a blessing. You women understand me more than my friends.... YOU ALL ARE MY NAVY SISTERS :) When my son completes all of his schooling does he get his orders then?
  • mrsb

Lenrose, he arrived on June 8th.  He has completed BESS and ATT and is waiting to class up to Techno, whatever all that is!  BESS is Basic Enlisted Submarine School and ATT is Apprentice Technical  Training, I think.  I don't know what the acronyms for Techno mean.  Just one more step closer to getting on a sub.  He should be there for another year I think and will then get his orders.

We're all here for you-we're one big family now!!

  • SoProud

mrsb, It is so funny that you mentioned the wetness up there. When my Sailor was little he used to say he wants to move to WA because he loved rainy days. He could sleep all day without feeling bad!

lenrose, I know exactly how you feel. My Sailor is the only child I have and even though I'm married my hubby is on the road during week days, he's only home on weekends. It was always just the two of us spending nights together in his room. He was playing video games and I was sitting on his bed knitting or reading and eating snacks. Haha  Oh! I miss those Days so much!

How long your Sailor will be in Groton depends on his job. Mine got to Groton on June 22nd. He's MM (Machinist Mate) and he chose weapon so now he is a TorpedoMan.

  • SoProud

lenrose, I believe he will get his orders a few weeks before he completes his schooling. My son has to report in Bangor at the beginning of Dec. At least as of right now, I understand everything can still change since this is only a "soft order" if there is a such a thing.

  • Eaglefan

OklahomaMama- I know you are so proud of your son! Congrats.
Soproud - my son has been in Groton since August 31. He is also going to be a torpedoman, hoping to get west coast orders too. He graduates BESS on November 1st.
  • Johanna

SoProud.... USS Michigan Mom here.... HOOYAH!!!!
  • FATHOMOM

Oklahoma-mamma; BESS graduation w/distinction -awesome. i am so happy you found someone to take pic's. One more step closer to a boat!

mrsb - Wow - several birthdays in November, ours is October 24th. I am looking forward to seeing his picture when the yummy is delivered! I did not even think about sending the card too! Augh! I am glad Annette's niece is out there. Good for her to help in this big, cool way!

marlene  - a November birthday too. In many ways ALL of us are new to NAVY. Just keep on reading - you will learn soooo much!  Welcome! Hey, you look like me! I need to find a picture I like.....I keep your son in prayer. He will adjust, he will learn - this Groton world is an improvement over BOOT! He must be quite busy now. When they arrive they have so many qualifications to complete. AND to be able to text when you want - it is great! Your Sailor will be busy and will get back to you when he can. I remember this when our Sailor first arrived at Groton.

Lenrose - welcome to Groton. Our son has been there since end of May. He really, really likes it there. He is wondering what the winter will be like - another California boy. Our Sailor has learned so very much already. Groton is tough, but holds ALL accountable. That is a good thing. However, as we have learned, there are those who are not so good w/the importance of visiting family time. Wow - a 50/50 winner - awesome! Yes, God DOES watch over us!

Soproud - Congrats on Bangor & USS Michigan. So much hard work, integrity and determination in these fine young men. All of us are SO PROUD!  Fair weather and following seas! HOOYAH!!

I do not think it will ever get easier to say so-long to our Sailors. I, too, find myself crying when I look at our Sailors picture or think about him. We are unconditional-loving and nurturing Mom's......it's what we are made of!  And that is a very good thing!  It is a blessing to have ALL of you out there, I find great comfort knowing I am not alone with these emotions, concerns and tears.   It may not be what some of us would have chosen for our sons, but we proudly, unconditionally support our son's. So, when the time comes that our Sailors are underway.....we have each other, we have prayer. I  TOTALLY agree that we are NAVY SISTERS. Some of us may never meet - yet we are forever linked to one another by our sons and their NAVY journey. May God guide and bless ALL of our Sailors  -  HOOYAH!!.....is that like an AMEN?

  • FATHOMOM

Wow - that takes up a lot of space and was a bit wordy....sorry!

  • SoProud

OMG! FATHOMOM, Thank you so much for your kind words. Everything you just said is so beautiful, sweet, heartbreaking and true. Tearing up all over again! I truly Appreciate all my Navy Sisters!

  • Annette

FATHOMOM, my son's birthday is the 24th also! Kristen will be busy on Wednesday! I can't wait to see the pics when she delivers. I told her I want a photo of her and Dennis with the cake. I sent her some money and she picked up some NEX gift cards for me too, I will put them in a card. Silly me I should have also sent her the card, rather than the back and forth, oh well. I have some more mail for him and a small gift, and will package it all together. We ordered an ice scraper from Amazon (oddly, we can't find them in sunny So Cal!), and are sending it to her for wrapping and delivering! I am really working this poor girl! She is such a sweetheart.

  • Johanna

FATHOMOM, not too wordy, nice to read over my morning coffee.... ; )
  • navymom2013

Yes FATHMOM - it is like AMEN!  You made me cry, first thing in the morning but those words are so true.  The men and women that we raised are ready to go out on their own and do good for the world.  That is what we planned for but we will always be their moms and the they will always be our babies.  I say this to my son all the time.  I told him that he has to get used to hearing that he is still my baby - even at 28 - probably till I am gone - so suck it up and learn to love it.

I still embarass him so much - too bad!.

  • doubletrouble

Good morning everyone! I thought it was time to introduce myself & quit stalking since my twins PIR'd on 10/11! One is here for A school & the other is in Great Lakes. It's so good reading all the comments & getting info from everyone.
  • Annette

Welcome, doubletrouble!  Glad you have joined us! Hooyah to your sailors, and best of luck to them and you!

  • mrsb

Welcome doubletrouble!  Wow, twins in the Navy at the same time!!  God Bless you!!!

Annette, you mentioned getting NEX gift cards-what do they have there?  I was thinking of just sending a Visa gift card with the birthday card.  Would that work too or does it have to be Nex specific gift card?  Still so many things to learn!!

    Fathomom, hooyah!!

  • Annette

They are like a Target. Toiletries, clothes, electronics, uniform stuff, souvenir stuff, basically most anything you want or need. And tax free. But you can't buy the NEX cards online. A Visa gift card will work just fine I think.

  • Johanna

Holy cow, just booked my flight... heading to WA to see my youngest Sailor very soon!!! Happiest, happy dance... HOOYAH!!!
  • FATHOMOM

Welcome doubletrouble! Congratulation's on P.I.R. Wow - you must have cried twice as much!! Yes, God bless you and your TWINS...in the NAVY....at the same time....BIG HUGG! I pray your sons are doing great! Our Sailor truly enjoys Groton. Your Sailor will be busy, good busy. I hope the Groton Sailors are kind and welcoming of the new Sailors. Our son recently shared with me that is was at least two weeks after P.I.R.and arriving @ Groton that he began to feel healthy again. His group had some oookie ricky crud! He also mentioned they are mandated to have the flu shot.....soon, if not already. Our son recently completed ATT (Advanced Technical Training) and is ACU (awaiting to class up) for Techno (all computer systems). Our submariners have quite a bit of initial training and qualifications before A school. This site is a group of awesome NAVY Mom's - continue to stay in touch - I learn something new everyday!!

Yup - these Sailors will ALWAYS be our babies - I embarrass mine often too!

Annette - oooooh, an ice scraper, great idea. These are important things the California flat landers do not think of! He does have snow chains. Do you think the NEX carries ice scrapers? I may send one his way anyway.Your niece will be busy this Thursday...it is a good thing! Maybe she will deliver both at the same time. I still need to contact our Sailor and find out his schedule for that day. It was lovely to talk to her on the phone - she is sweet.

Yay Johanna - WA bound! Have a safe, wonderful trip. Send Momma huggs to all those USS Michigan Sailors. HOOYAH !

mrsb - how are those pups treating you? And I agree, still soooo much to learn about this Groton NAVY life. Big Hugg and a HOOYAH!!

  • mrsb

    Thanks Annette!

    Good for you Johanna!!!

Fathomom, you sound like a veteran Navy mom-oh that's right, you are!!!  The pups are doing great!  I gave them each a new squeaky toy today and they had such fun with them-of course now they are sleeping, again!!  Love those pups though!  Please wish your son a happy birthday for me!!!  Mine knows something is up for his birthday since I had so many questions for him.  It will still be a nice surprise though!  :)

  • amandamomof4

well ladies my boy has officially left Groton :) he is home for a few days before driving cross country to his new Base in Norfolk VA

Good luck to all your boys!!!!

  • navymom2013

amandamomof4 - well congrats to your son.  Nice drive from Connecticut.  I have been in Norfolk, VA and he will love it there - he got out of Groton before the winter's cold.  My son is coming home for Christmas to Florida - he will be happy for the warmth relief too.  Can't wait to hug that boy.  I hope that in two weeks I don't fatten him up so bad that he can't fit into the sub LOL

  • mrsb

    Congratulations amadamomof4!

  • Annette

Amandamomof4, congrats and best wishes to your son. Glad you get to enjoy some time with him!

And Fathomom, I would bet that he could get an ice scraper in the NEX.

  • marlene

FATHOMOM, my birthday is the day before my son's. ha. November is a great month, ha.

Annette thanks, I will look under your profile and find the info. This is great!!

My son has been put on hold but not sure why. I don't understand why they ship him off to boot camp so fast then to Groton only to be put on hold. Apparently this happens frequently. This stinks, he's ready to start school!!

  • Annette

marlene, how long has your son been in Groton? They are in "build" while they wait to fill the class to start BESS. After BESS they go into ACU (awaiting class up) to go into ATT or whatever school they may do next. Again, waiting to fill a class. My son was maybe a couple weeks before starting BESS, but he was kept busy with quals and indoc. He had 1 day of ACU before starting his ATT class after BESS. Sailors will tell you that ACU stands for "always cleaning up". ;)

And Kristen says she had a lot of birthdays in October!

  • marlene

Annette, that would make sense then as to why they have him on hold if they're waiting to fill a class. Just stinks that he has to stay there while he's waiting. I'm okay with the "always cleaning up" since he needs all the help he can get on "cleaning". ha.

  • Sharon

Have pictures from Thursday's BESS graduation. Not sure where to post them.

  • Annette

Sharon, you can post them here, look at the top of the comment box where you type, there are icons to add things like links, photos, etc. I always have to make mine smaller once I post them in the box, they are pretty big. You can click on the arrows (or dots) at the corners and sides of photo to drag and make smaller. And/or you can post them on the loved ones of Groton (A & C school), or the Sub School (BESS) fb pages

  • FATHOMOM

Amandamom - enjoy hugging your son. Congratulations to your Sailor.Fair weather and Following Sea's! Keep in touch so we can hear about your Sailor and YOU!

NavyMom2013 - tooo funny....those subs are kinda tight! Hugg your Sailor every moment you get!

Marlene - Wow sooo close to a birth on your birthday! I had our second son ON my birthday - awesome gift! Yes, the HOLD happens.Everything Annette says is sooo true. Hurry up and wait....and clean some more!

  • FATHOMOM

Yay! Our son received his giant birthday cookie this afternoon. Annette, thanks for the recommendation. Your niece delivered it to his building and sent us a picture of our son holding the cookie! She decorated it beautifully w/his favorite team colors and she even put Submariner dolphins on it! He called us and said it is so cool, he was so appreciative.  He says it is deelish and looking forward to sharing it with buddies! First time in 23 years we have not had our boy home for his birthday.  I miss our boy so very much. We will have to get used to this......will try.....won't like it....don't think it will get easier. May God guide and bless our Sailors and families! Hooyah!

  • mrsb

Fathomom, that's so cool!  I can't wait until my son gets his giant cookie next friday!!!  I like the dolphin idea too-I may have to "borrow" that one!  It's going to be hard for all of us newbies to get used to not having them around for special days and holidays but we'll just do the best we can.  We have each other to lean on anyway!

  • Annette

The early morning delivery, and the awesome niece/cousin/baking fiend, Kristen

  • mrsb

Awwww, he sure looks happy!!!  Nice job!!

  • Annette

The cake,, not sure why I could not rotate it. It is a pumpkin cake with maple walnut glaze. He said it is delicious!

  • Annette

    Fathomom, I wanna see!

  • mrsb

    Fathomom, me too!!!

  • Annette

Since we are family, we just had the stuff we ordered from Amazon shipped to her since it was coming from elsewhere and did not include giftwrapping, and she kindly gift wrapped for us, and brought them with the cake.

  • mrsb

    She's the bomb!!!

  • FATHOMOM

Wow - the cake looks delicious! I will work on posting a picture or our birthday delivery.......I am so NOT computer friendly.

  • FATHOMOM

OK - I think I posted a picture of the yummy cookie that was delivered to our son for his birthday. Our son loved it - and enjoyed sharing it with friends. Sure hope it worked, not sure how I did it!

On Saturday our Blue Star Mothers Chapter will be packing hundreds of boxes to be shipped to deployed.  Praying for ALL who protect our United States of America. Hope to find everyone well. Have a wonderful, safe weekend.

  • FATHOMOM

ok - so it did't work. I will try again.

  • Annette

Fathomom, at the top of the message box where you type, the 2nd icon from left, click on that. It will open up a box for you to download an image from your files and it will show up in this box, like mine. However, it will show up extra huge and you have to click and drag on corners to resize to fit box better.

  • mrsb

Hello all!  Today is my son's 21st Birthday!!  Annette's niece made this awesome birthday cookie for him, since Mommy can't bake him a cake this time!  Thanks Annette for letting us all know about Kristen!!

  • mrsb

Here is a picture of just the cookie-it looks yummy!!

  • mrsb

Fathomom, I'll see you on saturday!!

  • navymom2013

  • SoProud

My son just sent a text message to his Dad saying they were singing a pretty sweet cadence yesterday.

    here it goes:

Somewhere there is a mother  She's crying for her boy. He's a submariner with orders to deploy. Don't you cry for him he don't need your sympathy. He's a submariner That's the best you can be.

Somewhere there is a father He's crying for his son. Son is a submariner with a war to be won. Don't you cry for him he don't need your sympathy. he's a submariner That's the best you can be.

I'm having a hard time to stop crying, I guess I know why he didn't send this to me. Love all our Sailors!
