sasharanger- my sons PIR was 12/06. He told me today that last day for them at Groton is Thursday Dec 19th and that he is looking into a flight home with departing at Providence airport on the 20th or 21st. He told me that some guys told him that its the cheapest cab ride and the closest airport. I need to look at a map.....
msmomma, my son has a 6:30 am flight out of Providence on Southwest on Friday Dec 20. Once I find out how he is getting there I will let you know if some ride sharing is a possibility.
And Providence is definitely the closest. They could look into an airport shuttle, those can usually be a lot cheaper than cab fares, because they can take extra riders.
My son is coming home the 20th. Yippee!! His flight leaves around 6:00 AM. He said a group were going to try to get a shuttle van or something. He may want to ask around to see if he can catch a ride with them.
mrsb, yes, the newly arriving Sailors will be able to go home for Leave sometime over the Holiday Stand-down at the "A" Schools. It may or may not include Christmas Day. This is the only time that Sailors are able to go in the hole on Leave days. They will be putting in their Leave chits soon. The Holiday Stand-down for most "A" Schools begins at close of business on 12/20/2013 and classes resume on 01/06/2014.
the Taxi that wanted to take me from the sub base to Providence airport said he was giving me a great deal at $125. one way. You have to remember - it is in another state so they cross state lines and charge for that. They need to find a shuttle, it is cheaper, or possibly get a group of guys together with a car - for long term parking. and fill that car full to the top - each paying something to the guy with the car. LOL Isn't the Navy going to help these guys out here? Just asking. Even if the school is closed for those two weeks or so, do the guys need to use their personal leave time that they have accrued?. If they don't go home or anywhere, will they have a Christmas get together on base -they don;t have to leave the base anyway if they have nowhere to go, do they?
American does but only has a small number of seats per flight. You have to call them to get military fares. You might want to look at militaryfares.com and see what they have.
What are the "quals" and do they need to be completed before they get a leave chit? My son arrived 12/7 and says they have a "security" hold on him. What in the heck is that?
navymom2013: My son will be staying at the base for stand down. He will still be required to do watches. So no they don't close down it's still business as usual with less people. I don't know all the details but he will fill us in the next time we talk about Christmas.
An update on my son's health, he had his two week check-up on Tuesday and his corpsman was a Colonel, he thought that was cool :-) He's now on two inhalers to help with breathing. He said the four flights of stairs were still causing fatigue but for the most part he's doing well. He will continue to be LLD/Limited Light Duty for two more weeks. As weird as it may sound I'm glad he won't be traveling since that can exacerbate symptoms. He's come to terms about not coming home for Christmas. And in a very honest conversation said he wouldn't be the same without his brother here anyway :-( He's never celebrated without his little brother and he's not ready to do that yet.
I've encouraged him to go check out the Christmas festivities in the area. He said he was going to do that.
Exciting week coming up for everybody I bet you're just giddy with delight and anticipation to see your boys :-) Let's all pray for some wonderful travel weather!
Hi Claudia, I'm sorry you're feeling some anxiety of only seeing your son for those few short six hours. But's it's amazing the new perspective this entire experience gives us and shows us. We appreciate every second, minute, hour, text message, conversation...you get the idea. It's not easy but you can do it. And this site and the ladies hear are ALL an inspiration. Even if you're like me and only check in once a week or maybe even less or your here every day, someone is always available to lift you up and encourage you with their words.
And you never know they might just run into each other during stand down :-) With so few on base it's going to be quiet which my son won't mind but that's just him.
Mercy! Kevsmom93 you are one beautiful and strong lady. You have an awesome Sailor! BTW, my Sailor says yours is the "most straight edge guy" he knows! My translation, an awesome outstanding young man he knows! You must be so proud of him and your Marine! God bless all of you! You hang in there now! Keep posting and letting us know how you are doing.
Thank you for all the well wishes for our Sailors coming home. And, yes, giddy is a perfect word for how I'm feeling right now :-) like a little kid waiting for Santa! HAHAHA God bless our Sons and all in the Military. Safe travels to all.
ProudNavyMom#1, You are the best just so you know, always sharing your faith and friendship and love with all! Just amazing :-D
That's funny what your son said. Sounds like they have one another figured out after all these months of knowing each other. It would be incredible if they continued on and ended up on the same boat!
Hello my friends!! Nice to see you again! Kevsmom, I'm sorry your Sailor and Marine won't be home for Christmas. :( Skype is a wonderful thing-not quite the same but at least you can see them and talk to them.
ProudNavyMom, you are also very inspirational, and always happy! I hope all our boys are on the same boat one of these days!! God Bless you all!
Still a bit confused about Christmas...one says yes...another says no. Guess I'll wait to hear from my Sailor and see if he has been assigned the watch. Fortunately, we live close enough that he may be able to come home a few days even if it's not Christmas day.
KKristen Ship02, I don't know where this post went but I don't see it on here. I think I was so excited that I hit reply on my email server instead of the link to this site. It may be too late but here it it goes again.... congratulations!! You will now be able to send him care packages whenever you want! :-) I sent mine most of the junk food they were not allowed in BC. He really enjoys the junk food and individual packaged snacks like little Debbie's cinnamon buns, cookies, crackers, oatmeal in a packet (you can fit more of them in the mailing box). Powdered sugar donuts. Chunky soups, just what ever you know your Sailor likes. Your son will also be able to order food from off base and have it delivered to the base; or eat at base as he pleases. The cell phone is important because you can text him whenever you want and he can text you or call you back when he is able to. He might be awaiting a class (ACU) as Christmas is almost here so try to send that phone soon. For the phone you may want to send it via FEDEX. I usually send the care packages in a $17.95 USPS box, delivered in 2 days, which you can fill to the brim and only pay one rate for it. It's a 12 x 12 x 5 box. I know there are other cheaper services but i can't recall right now.
I am so excited for you and your Sailor! There is so much more to come and you will both be experiencing so many different feelings. Make sure you check this website often, and share. We will learn from you and the ladies on this website are VERY supportive. We are truly a LARGE family here. Even though most of us have never met :-) God bless you and your family. BIG NAVY MOM HUG!!! {{NMH}}
Can someone please refresh my memory on where the SR's need to go to get signed up for the airport shuttles to Providence or Hartford this week? Sorry for the repeat, I have seen it many times but I can't find it for the life of me today (when I really need it)...LOL...Thank you!
GOOD MORNING ALL!
ProudNavyMom#1 - Thank you for all the great info. :0) how long has your son been at Groton? My son & I Skyp'ed on Saturday! It's SO nice to be able to see him and talk to him. Anyway, he's coming home on Friday! He wasn't going to tell me but .... he did. :0) His birthday is the 21st. I want to make a sign for our garage - like on butcher paper.
I'm probably going to change my name ... omitting the ship & div.
KKristen, I am so happy for you and your Sailor!!! You must be so happy he will be going home this FRIDAY!!!!! HAHAHA So happy for you and yours!! My Submariner has been at Groton since 6/8/13 and loves it! They have him in charge of set up and take down of Base Events, like they did for Thanksgiving and now for Christmas. He works with 30 other to get it all done. He is ACU (awaiting class up) for TECHNO. There is so much for you and your Sailor to look forward to. Keep coming here and let us know how he is doing and better yet, share your feelings here. We are all going through the same things and feelings. I find a lot of understanding here that others in my family and community do not quite understand. There are great Ladies here! Hope you have an awesome Christmas with your Sailor home! Get all your hugs and pictures while you have him with you and make memories. I know I will!! :-) God bless you and your family
OH! And I think you have an awesome idea to welcome your Son home and for his birthday!!! Please wish him well from this Navy Mom and thank him for his Service. God bless our beautiful Sons and our Military.
Yes, we're disappointed of course but we know this is only the beginning of many years where we will probably be wishing our boys a Merry Christmas from afar.
Just wondering does anyone know if they canreceive mail during stand down at the base??
help!!! My sailor graduates the 19th from Bess and just found out he has duty right after. and we are traveling up for graduation. do they need to switch or can they have someone take there duty
7 hours Until my flight to Connecticut to see my son!! I can't wait for the hug:) he just found out that he will be going to KingsBay, Georgia when he graduates from "A" school. He's really happy about that.when he's happy, I'm happy:-)!!
Eaglefan, Congratulations to you and your Sailor! Please thank him for his Service! Enjoy your time with hiim! Have a safe trip there and back. God bless,
Good Morning Everyone and thank you for being the wonderful group that you are.
My son is coming home for Christmas. He went to the Providence Airport at 3 am with a couple of friends - Thanks and God Bless his friends for taking him. His flight is close to noon but he is there and calling me every half hour. I can't wait.
I spent the last five days cleaning and shopping and I am so ready to see him.
MOM C ship - He was on watch during Thanksgiving and got one of your meals.
Although he did not request it, he ate every bit and is still talking about it today.
What a wonderful idea to do that. I guess you have to know someone pretty well to even get on the base to serve a meal. Pretty Special! and thank you for your kindness.
Eaglefan - We sure spend alot of time at airports lately, don't we. If we could learn how to fly ourselves, I'll bet you would see MOM's Flying in the sky all over the country because we would do anything for our sailors.
I am not going to do anything but soak up my son's energy for two weeks. No work, no housecleaning - I just want to be with him because it will probably be another year that I won't see him. Can't wait until tonight!!!
Everyone, have a Merry Christmas and I know it will be a Happy New Year !!! I can't wait to see that handsome lad in his dress blues. I hope I don't cry too much!!!!!.
I am sitting here as my daughter gets ready for school, knowing from a text that came in before I was awake, that her brother is on his flight home, he had already had the first leg to BWI in MD, and was on that next flight that comes straight here! She doesn't know this, and we hope to surprise her at her high school today, he lands at 11:30. I can't wait!
Good Morning Everyone. :0)
I am Excited as well because my son arrives today. I'm wondering who he went with to the airport .... I'm thinking/hoping it was with one your sons. :0)
I made a banner on butcher paper to hang on the garage. LOL And all his favorite Christmas cookies. I'm just just so excited ... I'm giddy! I need to be patient though because he will be seeing his dad first. Probably just an overnight thing. Saturday is his birthday and they always go to a exotic Car Show on Saturday mornings...... Newport Beach area. I happy they'll get to do that.
What would I do without y'all here? My co-workers and friends are probably so tired of hearing me talk about my son.... LOL I can't help it. :0) I don't always post but I do read every day. I feel like you all are my friends who I haven't seen in a long time. We should have a big weekend get away - somewhere in the middle of the country. :0) I AM PRAYING FOR SAFE TRAVELING TO ALL AND A WONDERDUL CHRISTMAS (holidays) WITH OR WITHOUT OUR NAVY MEN & WOMEN!
Blessings
Good morning all!! KKristen, I think that's a great idea, getting together somewhere in the middle of the country!! It would be fabulous to meet everyone!!
Annette, so glad your son is coming home!! I thought he wasn't or was it another Annette??? Oh well, so happy for you and all of us who's sons are coming home! Mine is at the USO in Boston-been there all night! He won't land until 11:30 or so tonight at LAX-ew, but I'll suffer through the drive anyway!!!
Safe travels to all your son's! I know you will all treasure your time with your boys, so happy for all you Mom's. Extra special to have them home during Christmas.
We talked to our son last night and he says it's starting to get pretty quiet on base. He drove a friend to the airport at 4am this morning and has two or three others he will be driving home when they return on different days. He has duty on Christmas. But he's fine with it and will still be able to call home and talk. He received his first Christmas package filled with some of his favorite goodies. Already opened it and ate two of his Dave's pickles..lol. Local farmer in Chico who cans pickles and sells them at this really cool store Maisie Jane's also located in Chico. You can buy from the store online too. He said he had already shared goodies with the guys. I think they probably circle like vultures to see what everyone receives! Good thing he has more packages arriving after everyone leaves :-)
Enjoy your time with your families and wishing everyone God's Blessings and a Merry Christmas!!
Annette-too funny!! I thought I was losing my mind as I couldn't remember where I saw that your son wasn't coming home!!! You fooled me pretty good!! ;)
Kevsmom, I will certainly give him several hugs from you!!! And ProudNavyMom too!! I bet it is starting to quiet down on the base. Evan had duty on Thanksgiving day so I feel for you. He didn't get his turkey dinner until the next day so he had two hot pockets and a pumpkin pie for his Thanksgiving dinner. I hope your son has a better meal than that! I am glad that he has friends there-they will all keep each other company, I'm sure. I'm wishing you a very Merry Christmas as well! I'll be in touch before then! Hugs!!!
Annette!!!! So glad to hear you fooled us all! I felt so bad for you last night!! It's a wonderful present you are giving your daughter at school. I'd love to see the look on her face!
To all the ladies I chatted with last night. My son did pull over at a truck stop. Slept 2 hours...woke up surrounded by police cars! He thought he was in trouble till he saw the cars were empty!! They were all eating breakfast!!! He arrived safe and sound a few minutes ago. I was hugging him and told him how much I missed and loved him and he said " I can tell....I can't breath right now"!! I had him in a bear hug!!
Praying for all you Moms who are still waiting for your sailors arriving home.
Have a wonderful visit and cherish every minute as I will!!
Annette I have not read your post yet and I can't wait to do so son.
Navymom26 it's like your son was surrounded by angels!!!!!! Hahaha you need to send this sorry in if they still do that or we can all make a book with Christmas miracles! I just had to let you know I had goose bumps when I read it! Holy Spirit moment!!!!!!
Mrsb, I'm so waiting to hear your sailors homecoming story!!!!
God bless us all mommas and our Sailors! I love you all my dear ladies!
Hahaha....if I hear I'll be home for Christmas one more time.....God help me!!!! :)
I texted that to my son and he wrote back 'hahaha...I'll be there mom :D'
he is as exited as I am. I told my whole family Just let me have him first Hahaha thank you Lord!
Hello Ladies, I'm so excited to hear about all the Sailor HomeComings! Please give your Sailor a big hug for me and let them know that their service and sacrifice is greatly appreciated. Oh God I Love these Boys!
I found out about a week ago that my boy is coming home also, I just didn't want to post it and jinx it again like a month ago. He's about to board his plane in Providence and he will be home at 8:30PM. I'm super excited, can't wait for that Sailor Hug! No better present than a Sailor under the Christmas tree. Haha
I wish all of my friends here a Very Merry Christmas and safe travels for the Sailors!

Merry Christmas to you all!!! :)
