Hi KevsMom!!! Long time!! How exciting that your Sailor may be getting orders soon! Mine, and ProudNavyMoms just started A school a few weeks ago and have at until August or September until they are done. Would be nice to have a date so we could maybe go to graduation but then that would be way too easy!!! How is your Marine son doing these days? Take care!
First I would like to congratulate you and your Sailor! How time flies!!! He will be receiving his orders in no time!!!! How proud you must be!!! Hang in there!
I guess mrsb and I will be following you to Sub moms around July/August when our boys will graduate A school! How exciting to see their careers develop!
I wanted to thank you for your words of wisdom to Giselda because they were speaking directly to me too!!! HAHAHA Praise God. He does have mysterious ways to give us a message! Well, sending not mushy texts works! Thank you!!!! :-)
Yes, how is your Marine? You must be one proud Mama!!!
Hi ladies! My son is headed back to Groton this Saturday! He graduated sub school March 7th &has been home for two weeks on transfer leave. His first choice on his wish list was there in Groton & he got it! He reports to the USD Pittsburgh this Monday, March 24th. He is so excited!! You Know how they are... 19 & invicible!!
I can't wait to hear where our other sailor goes. We have twin sons & their best friend that joined together. Our other sailor &the friend are HT but not subs, they are still in school. It has been a very emotional past 6 months.
Good luck to all our sailors!
doubletrouble, how exciting!!! So much to look forward to!!! Congratulations on your Sailors and all the friends they brought with them to join our Navy with them! God bless them all! You must be a very proud Mom x2 :-)
Giselda - too funny - we loved the Top Ten.Thanks.
doubletrouble - Congratulations to your son on the completion of subschool - what a wonderful, huge accomplishment.Enjoy time with him! Happy to hear Groton will be home - Fair Weather and Following Seas!
kevsmom - awesome that your son will be receiving orders soon - where does time go? I am sure our son's are glad their assignment time is near!
corefrank - enjoy time with your son & Boston. We visited Groton & Boston in October with our son - it was wonderful! Safe travel.
Yvette - so good to hear from you. A son on a boomer - you will have to fill us in on how we manage our emotions while our son's are underway. We are so new to this journey. I am so very thankful for the support that is here in Groton and to hear from other Sub-Momma's too! God bless ALL our Sailors and families. Have a wonderful weekend Ladies!
Your welcome Yvette, hope things are going smooth now. My son is finishing up boomer school for et nav in ga will go to his boat, soon, excited for him hope it goes well, praying for them all, safety.
Hello everyone! My son is now in Groton preparing to start his next step of his journey. Can anyone direct me to a place where I can read and learn as much as possible about what his experience will be. Machinist Mate Sub Side. How long is sub school? He has school after that specific to his job (Torpedo man) does anyone know how long that takes? Thanks for sharing what you can.
Welcome ermklm1022 !! You are in the right place. Ask away and the "experts or more experienced Moms" will help us along the way. They helped us when we first arrived in Groton, and now we can help others. If we don't know, they refer us to others that can.
There are a wonderful group of women, Mamas, in this site.
Did your Son just graduate bootcamp? If so:
For now I can tell you that they first earn cards of different colors; each color card means they earned a privilege. From being able to wear civilian clothes, which they really like, to being able to go out of base during their free time or weekends.
When they first arrive they get to use their phones ANYTIME they want as long as they are not in school or have duty or doing watch. These terms you will learn from other moms that can recall all this much better than me. There is a reason why I am retired :-)
Soon many moms will see your post explain all this much better than me so don't worry. Keep posting questions, even if you asked them before. And share, share your experience and your feelings. We do understand. I found so much support on here! We are all going through similar experiences. You are not alone.
I bet you still have a fresh memory of your Sailor's PIR! How proud you must be! Were you able to go to PIR? The graduation from Bootcamp is so touching and emotional. I remember my heart was bursting with pride yet a bit sad to know that my Sailor was a man now and had to give him room to grow into the fine man our Navy has molded him to be. :-) So proud! Did you buy his pictures and dvd? hahaha You will be sharing it with everyone and anyone that comes over to visit you!!! HAHAHAHA
Well Congratulations to your and your Sailor again and please thank him for his Service!!! HOOYAH!!!!!!
Hello Ermklm! Congrats on your son's boot camp graduation! My son graduated last month from torpedoman A school. I know that not all experiences are indentica since they wait to get the right numbers of sailors before beginning new classes, but my son was in Groton for 5 1/2 months: 8 weeks BESS( Basic Enlisted Submarine School), 2or 3 weeks for BMS ( Basic Mechanic School, and 10 weeks for his MM Weapons(torpedoman)A school. He came home for two weeks after graduating and is now getting ready to go on his first underway on a Boomer out of Kings
Bay, GA. He really loved his A school! He is working over 80 hours per week right now since they are getting ready to go underway, but even though he's tired, he says he is enjoying it! Hope this info helps. Like ProudNavyMom said, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions:).
Eaglefan Thank you for the information. Our sailor is doing the same thing. MM, Torpedoman. I love this place. Everyone sharing and helping each other is just so beautiful! Thank you again.
ProudNavyMom#1 Hello! Yes, his PIR was 3.14.14 amazing weekend! I've been on Navy4Moms since he left for basic and have come to love it here. Thank you for all of the information. Its great to know what he is telling us is actually happening..LOL!! Have a great day!
Hi Denny - We all have someone we love. either in Groton or going there soon. Are you there? Please fill us in - we always love a new person to talk to. My son is graduating A School in May - ET Nav. He is working hard and he can't wait for the next step.
LaxDogsMom- Dare I say the first thing I thought when I saw your son's pic...."How sweet and adorable." He looks so darn happy! I just love all of our sailor's thanks for sharing such an awesome pic! And a very Happy Birthday to your son!
Welcome to the group new mom's! My son has been in Groton since June 8th, 2013.He arrived along with mrsb's son and ProudNavyMom#1's son. He's currently in the final phase of his A-school for Sonar Tech and loving it. I'm estimating about two months to go. Can hardly believe all this time has passed, you are absolutely right about that FATHOMOM!
Congrats Mom's on your Sailor's getting their "fish" such an amazing accomplishment in their careers!
ProudNavyMom#1- I'm glad you were able to extract words of wisdom from my post! Truly I think we all have to find what works best when communicating with our son's :-)
mrsb- How sweet of you to ask, my Marine is doing great and continues his school in Pensacola, Florida. Hasn't failed a test and according to his big brother he's at the top of his class. But that's not something our boys focus on so they are typically too humble to tell us themselves. In fact even though we have that bit of info. from the "big brother" we haven't let our Marine know that we know...lol. Things are a lot different in the Marine Corps, they keep them running around the clock. He called one night and it was 10pm his time and was getting ready to go PT (physical training). Then they are up again at 4 am...good thing they are all young, healthy and fit with that kind of schedule!
Oh LaxDogsMom - what a handsome sweet face! I too LOVE seeing the pic's of happy faces. Happy Birthday to your son and a Happy "labor"day to you!
Welcome Denny & dzdawn - Congratulations and a HOOYAH on P.I.R. Enjoy the beautiful ceremony and take lots of kleenex! Did I mention that when I spoke about P.I.R. our son had no idea what that term was? All of them call it graduation! Your Sailors will truly enjoy Groton. Our son has been at Groton since May 2013 and truly loves it.It is quite different than BOOT. Oh, the opportunity to hear from them and receive texts is wonderful. Everything Eaglefan Mom mentioned below is very similar to what most of our sons at Groton have experienced. During the next few weeks your son's will be busy earning their yellow and blue cards, checking out sub's on base, and sharing the responsibility of watch. When earned they have the privilege of wearing civilian clothes, leaving base and much more. So text them and I am sure they will return your text when they have the chance.
Kevsmom93 - wonderful to hear that your Marine is doing well. God bless and guide America and ALL of our Military daughters and sons.
Good Morning to all the Navy Moms! And welcome to all the new Navy Moms here!! Just found out that my sailor will graduate from Groton May 29th! My husband and I are going to fly up to Groton from GA. Then my husband is flying back and I will be driving back with my son!! That should be interesting ....the good old days of fighting over the radio!! I can't wait. He doesn't know yet where he will be based but he has 2 weeks off till he has to check in! I'm so excited! But then he said that deployment can be up to 8 months. I've been without seeing him that long. :( It's going to be a very hard 4 more years.
Navymom26 congratulations on your son's upcoming graduation!!! I can't wait to hear those words myself, but still have 5 or 6 months to go. How exciting for you-road trip and all!!!
Welcome dzdawn and denny!!! We're all glad to meet you!! Your sons will enjoy Groton as much as all of ours have. :)
Good Morning Navymom26 - My son is graduating May 29 also. I will not be able to go to Groton this time for that ceremony. Please take some pictures and post them if you can. I would appreciate that so much. Same as you, he will be coming home for two weeks and bringing his car home and doesn't know yet where he will be. He said he should find out before he comes home though. He might stay in Groton - there is that possibility and I wouldn't want to bring him his car again. I guess we will know when we know. It is hard sometimes not knowing. I was going to go up to Groton but the Navy Lodge, where I stayed last time is full and with the money I spend up there for one day, I could help him more. by just giving it to him.. He is going to day school and taking extra classes at night for this final 2 months. He is ETNav. Says school is kinda tough for him.
I wish all the guys well and they will finally make the actual sub soon. You will love that road trip as I did. You are not kidding when you say it is going to be a very hard 4 more years. I feel your pain but aren't we such proud families of US Navy Submariners. Not just everybody can do what these young men have done. HooYah!
Hi Navymom2013... I would be very happy to post some pics for you! It's too bad I can't get some of your son while I'm there. I don't know if that would be possible. Yes, it is very hard not knowing the different aspects of everything. I don't think I'm going to do very well not being able to text and call him every day. Do you know any good places to stay? I guess I need to make reservations soon. My son is taking the same class I think. He has been not really happy about the night classes. He wants his life back. I told him he can have that in 4 more years!! :) I'm very proud of all of our men!!
Actually that is a pic of me at Boot in 1961. I was 17 at the time.
My Grandson is 19, in Boot, ship 3 div 167 PIR 5/9/14. His name is Jacob T. His Mom and I are very interested in his future as an ET in the SECF. He'll be going to Groton on May 10th for sub school (BESS) and then on to "A" school.
@Denny - handsome guy in that picture. Good Luck and thanks to your son for serving. My son is getting ready to graduate and maybe move from Groton but I or one of these other fine MOMS will answer any questions you and your wife may have. Is your grandson as handsome as you?
Please post a picture when you can, we would love to see him.
@Navymom26 - if you friend me, I will tell you my sons name so you will know him when he comes up to get his certificate.
He is cool guy and would love for you to take a picture for his MOM. Some of the other mom's on here probably know of some great hotels right next to the base - I always stay at Navy Lodge but it is full up for that time period. There is a Ramada Inn and one called Groton Inn that gets a lot of reviews. These are very close to the base.
Denny - THANK YOU for YOUR service. Boot in '61 - Wow, you will have so much to share and compare when your grandson graduates BOOT! Were you a submariner?
navymom2013 & navymom26 - awesome to know your sons graduation dates. May they be blessed wherever their NAVY journey takes them. We hear the courses are tough too - the night classes are a pain but will help these young men of ours. I have been sending our ETNAV son short notes and texts of encouragement. I guess it is a good thing to challenge our young Sailors - once in a sub, they have such huge and serious responsibilities. They are the only one's who can study to make this happen. They are at a point now where I am sure they are just ready to graduate and move on! My prayers are that our soon to be Submariners focus and stay calm. I place ALL of them in God's hands and the rest is up to them! Hooyah!
My son's birthday was Monday. Had everything lined up for Kristen to make a birthday delivery. To our surprise my lovely daughter-in-law delivered his son, 5 weeks early. My first grandchild. Will definitely be racking up frequent flyer miles to Groton. Everyone doing great. One more addition to our Navy family. HOOYAH!!!
@ Sharon - you got the whole package - birthdays and birthdays. Congratulations on being a Grandma! and Happy Birthday to your son. Personally, I don;t do birthdays anymore. I stopped at 50. LOL but I love the fun that comes with someone else's birthday. Enjoy your gifts! Have a safe trip to Groton.
Denny, you sure look more mature than 17! Thank you for your Service. Our Sailors now wear the Cover over their foreheads not further back on their hair like in yours. Wow! How proud you must be of your grandson! God bless him and please thank him for his service!
LaxDogs so good to see your Son so happy! Please wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his Service!!!
KevsMom so good to hear about your Sailor & Marine! They sound like they are doing great and right on target! I am so happy for you and proud of both of them and all our Sailors! God bless them!
Sharon, what an awesome birthday surprise!!! HAHAHA Congratulations on your new grandson!! You must be so happy! God bless you and your beautiful growing family!! Hooyah!!!
Good morning! Corfrank her email is klajoie0204@sbcglobal. net but she also is on Facebook; it's K's Homemade Sweets "N Treats. She makes awesome goodies!!!
Corfrank, I can tell you that it is what Kristen's awesome hubby (my nephew is married to the equally awesome Kristen) wanted for his birthday! So I am certain it is tasty. She also made a giant cupcake for someone with maple frosting and candied bacon on it!
Maybe you all can help a little my son has PIR 4/25. Then he will go to sub school or A school? And do they leave for sub school immediately or is there usually a hold...Thanks!
If they are going to Groton, they usually go the day after PIR, bused down to the airport at "zero dark thirty hours". BESS is first, Basic Enlisted Submarine School. Your son may have other schools as well, depending on his rate, before A school. Mine did BESS, ATT, TCNO and now is in A school for sonar tech. After that he will finally go to the fleet. He has been in Groton since August 3, 2013.
Corfrank- just had Kristens cupcakes with maple frosting, candied bacon and drizzle of chocolate sent to my son yesterday for his birthday. Made his day. said they were "heavenly". she is awesome to work with and sends you pictures at time of delivery! Cant go wrong!
Mama Jill, I may just have to send some of those cupcakes to my son-they do sound heavenly!!! Kristen is delivering a large chocolate chip cookie next thursday-it's his one year anniversary of swearing in. :)
Corfrank
Thank you Cath B for the Boston info!!

Thank you all for the info on Ks Homemade Sweets! Has anyone tried the bacaon/almond brittle? My son loves bacon and this sounded really good.

Annette
Corfrank, I can tell you that it is what Kristen's awesome hubby (my nephew is married to the equally awesome Kristen) wanted for his birthday! So I am certain it is tasty. She also made a giant cupcake for someone with maple frosting and candied bacon on it!

That bacon/almond brittle looked absolutely fabulous!! Was thinking of ordering it for myself but it would be a pretty hefty delivery fee!! :)

Maybe you all can help a little my son has PIR 4/25. Then he will go to sub school or A school? And do they leave for sub school immediately or is there usually a hold...Thanks!

Annette
If they are going to Groton, they usually go the day after PIR, bused down to the airport at "zero dark thirty hours". BESS is first, Basic Enlisted Submarine School. Your son may have other schools as well, depending on his rate, before A school. Mine did BESS, ATT, TCNO and now is in A school for sonar tech. After that he will finally go to the fleet. He has been in Groton since August 3, 2013.
Welcome!

NavyMomCindy - Annette is correct. There are some who do BESS last - but that is not usual. My son has just finished BESS and ATT.
