Hi amp and welcome! My son has just started A school for sonar, he is on the last leg of schooling before he gets a boat! By the way, I don't know if it was here or on FB, but someone posted a link to a submarine podcast. I listen to podcasts frequently and found this interesting. It's a former submariner interviewing other submariners who share stories.
Yes that was me who posted the podcast, they talk to submariners from attack subs but there is one on there for a boomer, my son is on a boomer in GA and will be going out on his first underway very soon. The stories on there will help u to know what our sons will be going through , very interesting .
Amp good luck to ur son, glad he got a good re-rate.
Gundoggie good luck to ur son in boot camp, start writing letters as soon as he leaves and when u get his address u will be ready to send , they love getting mail, it is the high light of there time there.
gundoggie I am thinking about you and tomorrow! In my own humble opinion the first farewell when they leave for BC is the hardest. When you get beyond that point it will get easier (eventually) not right away. By being a part of this forum you have already built a strong foundation :-)
gundoggie - same here, it was the hardest for us too! then it was when we received his box of clothes (those should arrive in a few weeks). Our son's jeans were still rolled up - wah! Took me a very long time to wash that box of clothes. We are here for you! Big NAVY MOM hugg!
I haven't been on here in awhile. I had my baby may 15 and after 10 months of not knowing the sex, I am so happy to say we have a beautiful healthy baby girl. That makes 2 girls 1 boy!! They let my husband come home the next morning for 10 days, our oldest daughter and son were so happy once they saw their dad!! Our oldest daughter turns 4 on the 20th and since my husband missed her bday last year due to working out of state and we didn't see him last fathers day we are planning on visiting him the weekend of my daughters bday so we can also celebrate Father's Day. Does anyone have any recommendations on hotels to stay at??
Also, my husband will have to choose soon on which sub he would prefer. Our 3 kids ages are 4, 1 1/2, and 2 1/2 weeks. My husband is a true family man and loves playing with his kids and hates missing out. We do know about deployment and that he will miss out on some things but I was just wondering what others opinions on each subs are. The pros and cons
Congratulations CeeCee! You definitely have your hands full with 3 children! I have no ideas about subs as my son is still in school. I do not think there is a good answer since they are out of communications a lot while underway.
CEECEE congratulations on the birth of your daughter!! What a blessing for all of you! My son isn't on a sub yet so I have nothing to offer there. I'm sure others on here will chime in though!! Try and get some rest whenever you can! :)
CeeCee - Hi! Congratulations on your lovely children. When you get older like me, you will be so glad for all the dragging around and trying to get settled you do with them when they are small and don't understand yet, what is happening. Are you looking for a place to stay in Groton? or somewhere else? Also - he may get more of an option with subs but my son did not get to choose his sub - he only got to choose one of three places that he wanted to go as a permanent duty station. He was lucky and got his first choice, but it is where the Navy needs you - you don't really get to pick and choose. What grade is he? Is he an Officer? The problem with this website is that you have to try to remember what grade everyone is and what station they were assigned and I actually have a personal spreadsheet I made up of my friends names, their son's names - the boat names - their kids names - birthdays and anniversaries. It is really tough- you make so many new on-line friends and you kind of forget some of the stuff, you would like to remember about them. Good Luck to you and yours and I hope your husband gets his first choice. Please let me know more info.
We Weill be moving out to him in about 6-7 weeks. I was going to stay home with family while he's in school but he wants his babies and especially to get to know our youngest. When we go visit him I just want some place near base that's not going to break my wallet and has to be somewhat decent
The navy lodge is great, the rooms are big and they have a kitchenette. They also have a playground out back and a playground across the street. I paid around 70 a night that was a couple years ago. It is a five min drive to base. You are a dependent so u might also be able to stay on base at the lodge they have on base, check it out. It might be more affordable, not sure. If he gets on a boomer they go out for @ three months at a time or shorter , the attack subs will usually have longer deployments . Best of luck to you, Groton is very pretty, nice area, lots of fun stuff to do.
@shirl
Thanks for sharing the info on the Navy Lodge. Sounds like it would have been to our advantage to stay there last year when my other son graduated from Navy boot camp. So this morning we are on our way stopping through to Cincinnati and then on our way to Chicago. We did make reservations to the Navy Lodge sounds like we made a good decision headed to you PIR yall so excited see you all there.
Hello Sub School Moms! My son just started his A school on Monday and he's beginning to get settled in. It's kinda strange to be able to talk to him or text him again. I hope to build the same kind of friendships here on this page that I did with my PIR moms. We are from Florida and the weather is already in the upper 90s! Our trip to PIR last weekend was gorgeous. Perfect weather! I'm sure my new sailor will enjoy the mild temps in Groton.
Hi ClerMom welcome to CT! Are you sure your sailor is starting A school? Most (not all) do BESS first, then depending on their rate do ATT & Techno, then A School! Mine has been in Groton since December 8 and will be starting A school on the 17th of this month!
In any case - welcome! What part of FL do you live in? My hubby & I are considering relocating there from CT.
CeeCee - the lil princess has arrived - Congratulations! Take good care of YOU too! Everything shirl said about Navy Lodge - yes! Everything shirl said about subs and choices - yes! Thanks shirl !
Welcome ClerMom! Your Sailor will enjoy Groton. Enjoy texting and talking to your Sailor - love it! Our son arrived just about one year ago - he has been very happy there since day one! Our son will graduate A school end of June. Our soon-to-be submariners have alot to learn before starting A school.
mimi0522 - safe travel! Your other son is graduating NAVY BOOT? Hooyah!
This group of NAVY Momma's are a wonderful, beautiful, supportive NAVY family.....they really get it! I am thankful!
Your welcome fathomom, my son is in Kings Bay and on the USS Rhode Island , has not gone to,sea yet but will soon. I still like to,read all the post on Groton . I loved visiting him when he was in Groton, it is beautiful there.
shirl - I am so happy you have not left us! Yes, Groton is beyond beautiful. Our Sailor/Son has truly enjoyed being here. This past year has overall been a positive learning and growing experience for him. It isn't over, till its over....let's pray our Sailor/Sons keep up the focus, keep up the study time and sucessfully complete A school!!!! This is BIG stuff! I am so very proud of all of our Sailor/Son's who have devoted themselves to the extensive sub training they are going through and those who have completed! Our son's work so hard and have such responsibilities in Sub School. Thanks you to those instructors who have firmly and generously helped guide our young sons. The study time and training does not stop here in Groton, there is much more ahead. God Speed to ALL of them.
tidefan - HOOYAH for your son.May it not be tooo long a wait!
mrsb, ProudNavyMom#1 can you believe it's been one year!! Happy One Year Anniversary to my Sailor Sisters! Our boys arrived in Groton one year ago today! I know yours are still there God Bless them! They'll be on the next phase of their adventure soon!
FATHOMOM- Amen to that! You have a great way with words thank you for sharing your wisdom!
Hello ladies! I don't get on here much lately, we are still settling in from the move. Actually, we were, now are pretty well settled, just some painting and general household things to take care of. And hubby and I enjoyed a very nice weekend up at Big Bear, a break from the chores and a beautiful weekend! It was a Valentine's gift for me from him, way back before we had an inkling we would have to move and we would be buying a house!
Our sailor has two weeks of A school left, but texting with him today he said there are paperwork problems with personal property and travel, and will be on hold when he gets done, meaning not being able to come home right away. :( Hopefully it won't be too long a delay, better still, that all the things get straightened out before A school graduation!
Kevsmom, I know, I can hardly believe it's been a year too!!! I sent Sailor son a message yesterday and he couldn't believe it's been a year too! I'm sure we never thought this year would go so fast, kinda like bootcamp!!! Still waiting for a graduation date, always hurry up and wait. I'm sure your son is loving Hawaii; I had a dream that my Sailor gets Hawaii too. :)
mrsb - Hi! I hope your son gets his first choice I will say a little prayer for him..I know your son can make happiness wherever life takes him. Good Luck!
mrsb - I will keep your son in prayer that your son gets his first choice too.
annette - I agree - let's say a little prayer that any delay is not a long delay and everything gets resolved BEFORE A school graduation. i feel your pain. our son has about a week or so left of school and is on hold too. i understand he needs to receive hard orders first then process pers. property and taking care of pers. property can take up to 10 days. he has received orders I am just concerned about saying anything till hard orders are received. So, I will wait patiently for hard orders to come through. I pray our son's wait patiently and calmly too! Happy to hear you had a good time in Big Bear. We are about 20 minutes from Arrowhead and 45 out of Big Bear - flat lander. When I want to getaway....i go to Laguna!
Can someone please tell me what a "security hold" is? My sailor started BESS on 06/09 and he was informed the next day that he would be placed on security hold soon. I know that means he won't be attending classes for however long he's on hold, but what else does it entail? And what causes one to be put on security hold?
Ashley, I believe that means they are waiting for his security to clear. They send investigators out to talk to family, friends, employers, etc. If they feel they need something more, then the sailors get put on hold til all is cleared to Navy's satisfaction. I don't think there is any time limit.
Hi stylist! Long time!! I haven't heard anything about moving but my son is supposed to graduate soon and move on; I wouldn't think they would move him so close to graduation but who knows!
Ashley my son is on a security hold also. He had started BESS also, when he was placed on hold. We are still waiting. They usually tell them why they are on hold
At the 6/6 PIR, they release the sailors except those staying at GL at the end of the graduation ceremony. The "report back" times differed with the divisions. Mine had to be back at 2000 (8 pm) but he wanted to be in the parking lot by 7 pm so he wasn't late (that was a first). So about 8 hours friday. We got 3 hours at O'Hare EARLY Saturday morning (2 am to 5 am) to give him his computer and cell phone but everyone fell asleep on the benches.
PIR 12/7 - We also had about 7 -8 hours. We went to lunch, went back to the hotel, let him crash a bit, then went to dinner. He needed to be back by 8, but also want to back in plenty of time. We chose NOT to go with him at the airport - it meant leaving around midnight! But, we live in CT and knew that we would be seeing him soon (he came home for Christmas) and frequently for the next few months.
His cell phone broke before BC, so he chose to buy new one when he arrived in Groton - got a good deal from the NEX.
savedbygrace - HOOYAH on P.I.R.! Take lots of kleenex, it is an awesome celebration. Time spent with our Sailor was very similar to cybergrouch and bubblehead mom. All of us spent time with him @ airport - cool.
Hi Jody, depending on your sons rate, it will be a few weeks before he can leave base. Usually they attend BESS - approx 8 weeks. There are 3 levels of liberty white being the most restrictive. At the end of BESS he should be green card, which has more freedom. At that point I believe he can apply to live off base.
My son got married after BESS, and it was a few weeks to get approval to live off base. After BESS is ATT & Techno for some rates, then A school.
Anyway, that being said, she can move to Groton, but he cannot live with her until he has green liberty. On base housing is only an option if when he applies he still has 6 months.
I do not know how far away you are, but you may want to wait until he gets to Groton. Sorry if I am making this more confusing for you.
tidefan that's great!!! What an honor!! I had not heard of that recognition and it must be so awesome for him and he must be awesome to get it!!! God bless him and all our Sailors!
BESS is Basic Enlisted Submarine School, ATT is Advanced Technical Training, Techno tactical computer network operations. Not all rates do these before A school. By the way - on the BESS Facebook page in the "files" section are the facts about liberty, BAH, and more.
Groton is a pretty area, and summer is among the best time to visit!
Annette, CONGRATULATIONS! I just got to your post and saw the good news! I'm just now getting to go through my emails and see 95 emails from Navy for Moms! HAHAHA
Kevsmom93 I am so happy that you got to hear from your Sailor! I bet it made your day!!! :)
Well, I'm looking forward to my Sailor graduating on 7/25 and coming home for a couple of weeks! And the reality of it all is that we will need to wait for him to get his orders first. I have heard so many of your Sailors waiting for their orders to come so I better not get my hopes up until I hear he is on a plane! HAHAHAHA God bless him, I love him so much!!
