hoosiermamma congratulations on your son's graduation from his A school! What a terribly long wait for him afterward! What's next for your son in Groton? I'm not familiar with the aspects of what a Yeoman does for their training, very curious :-) Is Groton his PDS?
I have family who live in MS and have heard about the high humidity. Our son did mention when he was in Groton that it's pretty humid there too. Compared to N.Cal though everything is humid. Except today the weather is going to make me a liar because we're at about 50% which is highly unusual for summer.
Linda we are all learning! Welcome hoosiermamma - not sure about leaving humidity - it's been pretty humid this week! Although, Groton being near the shore is not as bad.
Thank you so much everyone for the kind welcome! I haven't been on NM much since boot camp ended 4/4/14. Am looking forward to becoming active again!
Kevsmom-it seems there are a few rates that do their A schools before going to sub school. YN is one of them. I am guessing the Navy has them complete that first because they can do their job on a sub or a ship either one. I refer to the YN as the secretary of the ship. They process all transfers, maintain personel records, handle incoming and outgoing messages. I am not familiar with what PDS is? Next for him is BESS. We live in IN and normally have a great bit of high humidity but my son said it doesn't compare with what he encountered in MS. Something about it being 90 degrees before noon and 75% humidity was not to his liking. LOL The weather in Groton has been much more comfortable for him.
Always learning something new and interesting on NFM's! Thanks for sharing about your son's job :-) My son is an STS- Sonar Tech Submarine. Graduated from his A school at New London on May 8th.
Thanks Kevsmom and 2013!! yes I did need that! Oh and my son said he knows your sons name but not him. Am sure they will get to know each other sometime soon!!
Txgal so happy for you too! So wonderful you get to see both of them!!!
Hi everyone!!! I've been quite busy lately preparing for my son to come home next Thursday 7/24 after A school grad and before reporting to his first duty station. I am so excited and our whole family can't wait to see him and hug him!!!
I will not be able to go to his graduation as I was hoping to do so if any of you kind ladies go and take pics please post them so we can hopefully get to have one for ourselves :)
Thank you in advance!!! God bless our boys and all of us!! Big NMH!!!! :)
congratulations mrsb! I know you are more than ready to have him home! So many of your sons will be headed home soon. That has to be a great feeling! Kevsmom93 - my son has not been given his PDS. And according to him, it really doesn't matter where he is sent, he'll be happy.
Annette bless his heart!!! All your Son went through to get to airports and finally to Guam! Thank God he's there now and even got a mini tour of tbe island ;)
Did he make it to RIMPAC? I've seen a couple of articles on FB and friend it so I could follow it! Let us know if he went!!!
I am happy for you that you got to see him and hug him and get all kisses in. They should take you through till your next visit!!! God bless you and yours
Hi Eliliam, do I understand correctly that your son is still at basic? If so it will be a while before he has liberty to leave. Usually BESS is before A school, and depending on his rate, there may be a few other schools like ATT & Techno.
If he only has BESS & A school, I wouldn't bother transporting a vehicle. My son decided to buy a beater while he's there.
When he first gets to,Groton he will have to earn his way up to driving and wearing civilian clothes. It will be a few weeks maybe a month or so before that happens.he will defiantly have more freedom when he arrives there compared to BC .i am sure some other moms can tell u more and add on to my basic info. Write ur son a lot of letters while at BC , they love getting mail.
Hello NAVY MOMMA'S!! it is so very nice to hear of all of the soon-to-be submariners graduating A School and those that are comin home! Our son will be heading home on the 24th as well! THANK GOD! We are sooo looking forward to this precious time before he heads out to his new home in Hawaii. It has been quite a year and I am so very proud of ALL of our young men. God guide and bless ALL of them and those who surround them!
elilam46 - yes, lots of letters and local news articles, family pic's and pet pic's. PIR will be here before he knows it! We drove our son's truck out to him once he made Blue Card.He enjoyed having it. Winter was hard on his truck.
Phoebs - have a wonderful time attending A school graduation! It is finally here!
hoosiermomma - wonderful to hear that your sailor is not on hold anymore! I feel your pain. You will love this group for support and sharing - I sure have!
Txgal - how wonderful to have both sons home! Enjoy, enjoy and may you have lots of huggs & kisses.
proudnavymom#1 - such happy news. I hope someone out there can get some pics for you! Enjoy having your son HOME - beautiful!
FATHOMOM- Awesome news so happy for you, YAY Sailors coming home!!
When all of you proud mom's are saying a hello my hubby and I will be saying farewell to our Marine on the 25th! But that's what we all do greetings and farewells are a part of our lives now.
elilam46- Enjoy the BC experience and PIR there is nothing like it! Take advantage of all the support you'll receive on NFM's. You will form friendships that will last you through the many stages of training in your future Sailors career.
As usual the car situation will be different for everyone your Sailor has to make the ultimate decision if it's worth his time and energy. Also if you're willing to drive your son's vehicle across country you will not be the first, sounds like you're more than willing :-) Our son purchased a car while in CT. The one here at home is older and wasn't worth the effort to get it to Groton. He made a very wise decision in his choice and bought a Subaru. He said it was like a tank getting him and his buddies through all the weather conditions. That would be my recommendation make sure this is a vehicle that can withstand very severe weather. He loved having the independence a car afforded, allowing to him to explore the area. He made trips to Boston with his buddies on more than one occasion, others made trips to New York City. He'll have to wait like everyone to earn this privilege and level of liberty.
elilam46- Good for you joining groups you can be as active or silent as you like. One little tip if you see a bit of info. that catches your eye copy, paste and put it in a folder on your computer. That way you don't have to spend your time searching through post after post and the various groups to find it. Don't ever be afraid to ask a question no matter how stupid you think it is there are no stupid question! Really!
Boot Camp Moms is going to be your life saver. And I mean that literally, when you feel like you're drowning from sadness, frustration you name it lemon elephant, Catmom, msrs and many more will be there to help. Welcome to Groton jodymac!!! Your son will love it there as there will be much more freedom and communication with you. Some of our sons are graduating this thursday and are looking forward to their next adventure. I hope your son enjoys Groton as much as mine, ProudNavyMoms and KevsMom has!! :)
jodymac - I believe our sons will be in school together! Mine arrived 7/19. So far, in the week he has been there, nothing but positive things have come out of his mouth about Groton! Mine graduated BC 4/4, completed his A school and ready to rock BESS :)
Welcome jodymac - I agree, your Sailor will enjoy Groton. The Sailors here are held accountable, they work and study hard - it is ALL good! Your sailor will enjoy the lake to swim in, chow is better than BOOT,paint-ball park- there are some awesome young men to befriend. And you will love this site! There are honest answers to questions and true heartfelt huggs when you need them. Our son will be leaving Groton very soon and has truly enjoyed his time @ Groton. It has been quite a year for ALL of us! Fair Weather and Following Seas to your Sailor and ALL new arrivals to Groton!
My son has been at Groton since July 20th. So far so good. We are only 2 hours away so we have gone and visited. He needed some of his personnel things. We are so happy and proud of him!
Welcome Footnut - wonderful to hear! be prepared, there is more to come because our young men continue to make us proud, it is overwhelming. Enjoy!
Hello elilam46 - after our son's PIR we took him out to lunch, to a local park for some pictures, back to the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites to relax for a few hours then he went back to BOOT CAMP barracks. At 4 a.m. (their flight was at 1 p.m.) the next day we met his bus @ O'Hare -we gave him his cell phone at lunch so he could tell us where he was. What a sight to see all of these young men packed and ready to fly off! Our son checked in with his group first, then checked us in - we all needed I.D.'s - so we could go through the line w/ him and wait w/him by departure gate. We had a huge wonderful time @ breakfast and shared a few more hours visiting. We were not given his flight info. until after PIR. Hope it works out well for you and yours! Hooyah! PIR.....take tons of kleenex....totally overwhelming! It's ALL good!
PIR is amazing. After the cermony with took our sailor out for lunch and then back to the Navy Lodge to have some quiet family time. He took a long long shower and changed into some clothes that I brought with me to wear in the hotel room. Bring some regular underwear to give to him to take on to Groton they are ready to get out of the tighty whities. We ordered pizza and just caught up with each other. Back to the base at 7pm. Met up the next morning at Ohare at 1:00 am. His flight left at 7:15am. We had breakfast together and some more precious time to spend together. They require you to show ID if you want to go to the gate and sit with your sailor. My son has been at Groton for a month and is loving it. Is very happy with his decision to serve. Proud mom!!
Regarding flights from Chicago, both O'hare & Midway are used, and they fly into Hartford, Boston and Providence. There is no way to know what your sailor has until they get their ticket.
Elilam we were hoping the same thing, we did end up flying from the same airport, but not to the same city, although there were sailors on our flight.
You can go to the airport and wait with your sailor, if you are there the same time they arrive - but that may be 1am! We chose not to do that since we live only 90 min from Groton and would see him frequently.
Another family found out at PIR their sailor who was supposed to fly to Groton was put on medical hold, and they ended up spending the weekend in Chicago with their sailor. He eventually made it to Groton.

ladyrocker: My sons PIR was 6/20. I cant believe that it has been a month already. He was in division 932. My sailor is going to be a weapon machinist mate. He tells me what they used to call turpeodo man. Would love to have a navy sista.
Congratulations to all the Mom's whose Sailors graduated their A school Thursday!! God's blessing for a safe trip home! Enjoy your boys and all those hugs you're going to get :-D
Linda- I've heard your son's job is pretty bad---!! Yes, it's strange how when they're in BC time seems to almost stand still. And once they get to Groton for their training it's so much better. They're excited to be there and share all their news. But I have to admit as the months went by our son became more and more silent. Must be a part of the job and everything they're learning. At least that's how it was (is) with our son. Now that he's in Hawaii I swear I know absolutely nothing! LOL!! Except he does send some pretty awesome and gorgeous island photos on occasion at least that's something!
Hooyah - Congratulations to the A School graduates today! Such an awesome accomplishment - be proud... Momma's & Sailors! Enjoy the huggs! Off to the next part of their NAVY journey.May God guide and bless them with safe travel always. Fair Weather and Following Seas. HOOYAH !! and ALL that good stuff!!
Annette - the Guam parade picture is so cool - Is that your son? Looks like the guys made a float to look like a submarine. That's a great picture. There can NEVER be too many pictures. MOM's love them!!!!!
Linda my sons PIR was 6/13. He was a push division I believe because I thought by my calculations he would have his PIR on 6/20. He is in Groton now about to start week 5 of BESS. Maybe our Sailors know each other? I had posted names asking but was told to delete for OPSEC reasons so I deleted the post. My SA is schooling for FT (Fire Control Tech). Kinda of an emotional day today ....although working for 9 hours kept my mind off the fact that his dad and my daughter drove up there today to see him. So wish I was able to be there too. She only posted 3 pictures so far......I want more damn it....lol...and she is not answering my text messages. I guess they are out having dinner catching up .....told her to give him tons of hugs and kisses from me!
LOL about the turpeodo man......I heard they refer to my Sailors' jobs as "Bubble Heads".
So Navy Sista's we are!
Blessing to you and yours and all our Sailors and Navy family!
Just got back home to San Diego after spending the last four days in Groton for the A School Graduation on Thursday. My husband took a ton of pics so I'll post them as soon as he transfers them to my computer. He tried to get at least one of each graduating sailor.
NC Mom - most sailors that go to Groton, have several levels of schooling there - BESS, ATT, TECNO, then A school. All submariners go through BESS Basic Enlisted Submarine School. The length of time depends on their rate. My son is sonar, he arrived in December, and will probably finish in October.
A friend of his arrived in February, and left in May for Nuke School.
Oh LaxDogs Mom - you are so generous to share! You posted the graduation pics we have of our son from BESS monthes back. We appreciate you and your husband taking the time to do this for us. My son remembers your husband leaning in from the isle after my son accepted his certificate @ BESS - and saying "my wife is going to hugg you later, from your mom". Oh, my son smiled and it meant so much to him.....and me!! Our son's have been through quite a journey at Groton. Congratulations to ALL soon to be submariners. May God guide and bless them always. Fair Weather and Following Seas!
NCMom - welcome to Groton. Your son will enjoy his time there. Ours did. Our son arrived in May 2013 BESS, ATT, TECHNO then completed A school May 2014 - ETNAV. Everything CathBubbhead said is what we have learned on this journey as well. Often the Sailors are put on hold for varios reasons. Often the courses are put on hold for varios reasons. So, our Sailors clean and clean some more and wait to class up.
Hi Everyone, I just joined the group. My son just had his PIR 7/25/14, and arrived in Groton, CT yesterday, 7/26/14 for Sub School and A School Training. I'm new to all of this. Heard from him yesterday when he got there. He's supposed to be letting his dad and I know his address and how long he's there for before graduating. Do they get leave time before getting assigned to a Sub?
Hi Mark's Mom - most sailors that go to Groton, have several levels of schooling there - BESS, ATT, TECNO, then A school. All submariners go through BESS Basic Enlisted Submarine School. The length of time depends on their rate. I hear that they do get time between graduation and assignment, but I don't know that to be a fact.
There are graduations for BESS & A School. After BESS, they do not get leave. Hope that helps.
Hi Cath Bubblehead mom. Thanks for the info. It did help. Didn't get to go to his PIR, and want to make sure to see him before he gets assigned to a Sub.
Linda
Cath Bubblehead mom: Thank you for the information on the blue card. Learning the ways of the Navy of we go.

Can anyone give me an idea of how long A School lasts? My sailor's PIR is 9/12/2014 and am just curious how long he'll be in Groton? Thanks!

Just got back home to San Diego after spending the last four days in Groton for the A School Graduation on Thursday. My husband took a ton of pics so I'll post them as soon as he transfers them to my computer. He tried to get at least one of each graduating sailor.
