Hi Linda. Glad I can help. The navy lodge in Groton ct is off base. Only three min away from the base's main entrance. Once he signs you in(and he can do that any time from now until your arrival) he will not need to escort you. I am wondering though, does your son have a blue card where he can get off base to sign you in? I'm not sure I've gotten to your post explaining that. But once he signs you in you are free to come and go as needed. You must be so excited to spend the weekend with him! Well, I just realized, if he can spend each day off base then he should be ok to check you in. Everything is hilli. Lots of beautiful hills and huuuuge rocks!!! And rock lake which is inside the base really has lots of huge rocks! I hope he's able to take you in and give you a personal tour :) of the areas they can show us. You'll have a great time!!! And let him take a relaxing BATH in your hotel bathtub!!! All they have are showers in base. Ahhh the simple things.... :)
Proudnavymom. Only needs one more sign off and will have his blue card. He has been in Groton since 6/21. Will complete BESS on August 22 then I think mechanical school followed by weapons. Do not know the length of the second and third schools. I hope someone takes and post pictures from his graduation in August we will not be able to attend I am going to contact K about sending some treats for BESS graduation. I have sent some homemade treats from home but it takes 4 days to get to him.
Footnut. Very happy your family got to spend your sailors birthday with him. NMH.
Any one attending the BESS graduation this Friday 8/8? I can't make it and would love a picture of my son. You could even give him a Navy mom hug for me!! :-)
JJW mom so sorry about ur sons situation, praying for u and him for peace and fairness. That is all I will say here if want to friend me I will talk privately with u, had a experience but my son stayed.
Just ordered a cookie cake for my sons BESS graduation on the 22nd from Kristen. If makes me sad that we cannot be at his graduation but happy to know that he will receive a sweet treat and a message from home. Thank you Kristen for what you do for our families.
Her facebook page is K'sHomemadesweetsNtreats. Her phone is 860-514-8435. On the site you can see all of the yummy treats that are available to order. I ordered from her website last night. Very easy to do. She contacted me this morning through a email and arranged for payment on line. She will contact your sailor and arrange for delivery of your treat and even take a picture and send it to you. I do not know how much advanced notice she needs but my impression is if she can do it she will make it happen. Awesome
My son mentioned that he will be graduating from BESS on August 22. He is finding out the details for us to be part of this.
If so, then we will defiantly attend, and take photos!
JJWmom, I missed your post and I don't see it here, but my son's best friend through BC and at Sub School was name initials JW. If this is your son, I have been praying for him. My son thought very highly of him. Feel free to private message me or email me at sweetmccoy@att.net
What has the Navy done with my son? In talking with him last evening, he said he and his buddy were studying for their quiz. I asked if the quiz was tomorrow. He said no, it is not till Monday!!! Just a little over a year ago, I couldn't get him to study for his finals his senior year of high school! Thank you Navy, thank you very much!
My son arrived in Groton on the July 26th. He said they were finally starting BESS this week. I know he is glad to get this phase going. He is wanting to get a car while there and I have mixed feeling about this. We bought his new car from him before he left for boot camp and sold it at a loss. If he buys a new car again and then is deployed after he finishes at Groton then again he is stuck with a new car and can not sell it for what is owed on it. He is 22 and I know he does not want his parents advice but I feel this is a bad decision. He needs to save his money and wait until he knows where he will go next. Right now everyone leaving Groton are going to Hawaii. Any advice how to advise him without making him feel like a child. We ate the loss on the sell of his other car. We even have an older car that we would drive from GA to CT for him but he does not want that car. I know he sounds like a brat and in a way he is being a brat. I know my husband will be very upset if he buys another car after we just took a $4,000 loss on the car we just sold for him. Help anyone.
Scubagirl, we are going through the same thing right now. He is 19 and has been in Groton since April and is actually on his way home as I'm writing this. Truthfully, my husband and I are going to try to talk him out of it for the same reasons you stated. Not to mention the expense that goes along with it. Also, to be truthful, I fear that they could get into trouble with the freedom the car would allow them. He's a good kid with a good head on his shoulders, but let's face it, he's still a kid!
We told my son to bring all his bank information so we could see if he can afford it right now and is it worth it. My husband and I will not buy him a car because he totaled the one we bought him before he left for BC. not sure if he's thinking we will, but we won't lol. I'll keep you posted on the outcome and if there is any info I found out throughout our conversation.
Giselda, It is a thin line we walk trying to let them grow up and knowing the decision they are making are not the best. My son got his car loan on his own and was working to pay for it before he left for boot camp. We did not want him to buy a new car when he had a family car that was paid for to drive. He did not live at home and he bought the car without our input or advice. We talked to him before he left for boot camp and told him we did not want him to have to worry with debt while he was getting his life settled in the Navy. We paid off the car loan and his credit card. WE told him please do not go and get your self in debt like so many guys do. Save your money and if you decide you have to get a car, get one you can pay cash for. The weather in CT is harsh and it will be harsh on a new car. I also think a car could add extra problems, with people wanting to be taken everywhere, drinking, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. My son was always a designated driver while he was at college but he got taken advantage of often and spent alot of his money on gas going and getting people when they would call and need a ride. I wish the guys were not allowed a car until they were at their permanent duty station. Make it a rule no personal cars until out of all the schools and at their permanent duty station. Why is your son headed home? Is he just taking a leave?
He finished BESS in June and just finished the 2nd phase and is waiting to class up so he was lucky enough to get 5 days leave. I can't wait to have him home for a few days!
I agree 100% with everything you said. My son is the same way and WILL get taken advantage of. My husband and I feel the same way about him saving money and buying it at the right time. I just don't see the purpose for any of it until they get their permanent duty station.
scuba girl Have a great visit with your son. My son sold his car before he left and like so many of us are fighting them to not purchase a car while at Groton. I agree with Gisels I wish the Navy would not allow them to have personal vehicles until they reach there PDS. What they seem to forget is it is not just purchasing the vehicle. Insurance, repairs, gas, storage. EVERYONE wanting a ride and asking to borrow the vehicle. They need to stay focused on finishing school and getting to there duty station than maybe think about getting a car. I know that they have to grow up and make there own decisions but when it is a bad decision it is hard not to say something.
My son is only at Groton for BESS (he already completed YN A school) and has not expressed any interest in a car at this time. I know I should count my lucky stars, but he really is a very level headed 19 year old. He wants to save a much as he can while in so I doubt if he will want to spend the money on a car. It is hard to reason with them sometimes. Just explaining to them having to store the car while they are out to see may not be enough of a reason unfortunately. The Navy does a pretty good job in their finance presentations, if only they would listen to them, it would make our job as parents so much easier. LOL
Welcome FlowerPower! The best way to get through boot camp in my experience is to count Fridays till PIR. That makes the time seem so much shorter if you think, that's only 7 Fridays! And count them off that way. Write, write, write until you think you can't write anymore. The letters they receive sometimes is their only contact with the outside world. Keep them positive, upbeat and encouraging! Sometimes I think BC is harder on us Moms that it is on our sons! The best part of them arriving at Groton is they have their cell phones! Wooohooo! Contact with the real world again!
On a lighter note, my son is getting a delivery of a fresh peach pie from K's Homemade Sweets! For no reason at all which will keep him confused :). I also sent a flat rate box today filled with his favorite gummy fish, sour crawlers. Hope he shares with his buddies! Today is his water escape training. I've watched the video and it looks like a blast!
Heard from my son yesterday. He was able to get MM for weapons. His first choice. So happy for him. The bad news is graduation from BESS is Oct. 3rd. We are going to TX for a meeting my husband has to attend. I will leave TX to fly to CT so I can attend BESS graduation. I have not been able to work it out so my husband can go to BESS graduation. His meeting last until 5 and the last flight out that would get him to CT in time for graduation is at 6:05. That would be almost impossible to to do. He can not leave meeting early. I will be there and if anyone finds out their graduation is the same day and can not attend I will be glad to take pictures and send to you. So rare we both are not able to attend important events in our son's life.
scubagirl My son is also a MM for weapons. His first choise as well. He will be graduating from BESS Basic Enlisted Submarine School on Friday the 22nd. We will not be able to attend the Bess graduation but will attend his A school graduation. My son seems to really be enjoying Groton.
Baby Dukie's Mama....Congrats ....my son also graduates BESS on the 22nd and he is also going to be an FT (Fire Control Tech)
He got his blue card yesterday and finished 2nd in class. They advanced him to an E3 even though he did not make 1st in class because the Sailor that was 1st was already an E3 so he got advanced today.....whoo hooo.
He also just posted on his FB page that he will be graduating with a 99.50 percentage, the second highest in a class since 59 (highest being 99.7!
Like wow.......I feel like screaming from a mountain top right now with tears of pride and joy streaming down my face! Will your son continue his schooling in Groton. My Sailor is and I believe ATT school is next!
FlowerpowerNavymom, BESS stands for Basic Enlisted Sub School.
Ladyrocker, Congratulations on your son's achievements. I would be on top of the world.
Baby Dukie's Mama, what ship was your son on at RTC? Mine was on Ship 03, Div 230. So our son's should be graduating BESS at the same time. Oct 3rd. I will be there. Have plane tickets and hotel reservations. Rental car tomorrow.
Congratulations Ladyrocker always wonderful to share the accomplishments of the Sailors they all work so hard to get where they're going, a job well done!
Definitely a job well done for your son Ladyrocker. I would be busting at the seams with pride as I am sure you are!

Just wanted to report that the ship successfully completed both Alpha and Bravo Sea Trials. We pulled in to the Shipyard around noon today [Wednesday, August 13th] from Bravo trials. The crew performed very well during the underways.
We completed a very complex test agenda, stressing the ship to near its limits to ensure our systems operated as designed. The material condition of the ship was great. The crew was ecstatic to get underway for the first (and second) time. It was great to see the crew excited about being underway and doing the things that they have trained so hard for over the last couple of years. We still have a lot of work to do before the ship is delivered to the Navy around the end of the month. I am very proud to be their Captain and can't wait to go to sea again with my crew.

Hannah , Sub schooling can be up to a year or longer depending on his job. bESS Basic enlisted sub school is the first they will complete. There is a lot of training they go through. Good luck to,your sailor.

HI Everyone,
My son will be graduating from "A" school in Groton on Thursday. He's been on base since he graduated basic last October. We kept him on our phone plan because it was cheaper and he uses his phone whenever he is not in training or on duty. He will be leaving for Kitsap (Bremerton, Washington State), in a little over a week, and we will continue to keep him on our phone plane - because it is cheaper. He paid for his own internet while on base, bought a car, took over the student loans I was paying for him when he was in college and has been paying for all his other expenses (food etc). But back to your original question, depending on what he is training for, a contract may be the cheaper way to go and if it is cheaper to be on your plan, he could always pay you the cost each month instead of an individual plan.
