Hi everyone. My son graduated BC in June and arrived at Groton last week. He is waiting for sub school to start. I can tell that this site is going to be as helpful as the BC site was - very thankful for that!
Well, today my son is graduating from FT A school and will be leaving Groton and heading to his station in Guam. This site has been so very helpful to me. I wish you all good luck with your sailors. Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving
Hi there. My husband will be attending A school in Groton after bootcamp (mid March) and I was wondering if anyone would know how likely or unlikely he'd be granted leave for the delivery of our second child (June)? He'll be an MM, I just don't know for AUX or Weapons yet. Any and all help on the subject would be appreciated :) Thanks!
Hello all! My nephew just graduated from Great Lakes on Friday and he's at Groton now. I hope this group can offer some insight into this sub school world and teach me things along the way!
ProudAunt09: I've found that a good, timely resource is the Naval Sub School's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/navalsubmarineschool/. They have some impressively produced videos (look under "vidoes" or off to the right of the page) that detail different elements of the sailors' schooling. My sailor will be graduating in a couple of weeks!
Hello Navy Moms, Wives, Girlfriends, Grandparents and the like. Welcome from a Connecticut Navy Mom. I live approximately 25 minutes from base, I go the mall and see all the sailors in uniform walking around all the time. Makes My heart melt. I often wear something that says navy mom when I go there. I am here to offer you support wherever needed. I am not military and cannot get on base for you, however, I can deliver anything you need. I can sit with your sailor when they are homesick, ill, or just need a Mom hug. Please feel free to reach out to me whenever you need to. My Sailor son Gunners Mate is stationed here in the US and I also have a local mom that helps me out and the feeling is amazing ! God Bless, your sailor is in good hands !
KTP, thank you!!! It's good to know you are so close. I live in Mississippi so won't be making regular trips up... helps knowing another mom is right around the corner!
KTP...thank you so much for letting us know your so close and available for our sailors. I live in AZ and am comforted to know someone is near by if my son needs anyone. He already acts like he is ok and does not need anyone but I will let him know he has a "mom" near by if he needs one.
I have met and taken sailors out to lunch and had a great time with them, it's fun to hear their stories. My sons is finally back on US soil, one happy momma here !
My son is in Great Lakes right now and will graduate June 2. Afterwards he will be headed to Groton for sub training. I was just wondering how long BESS is? I've heard 4 weeks and I've heard 8 weeks. Thanks!
My grandson has. Ren at Groton about two weeks now and tells me he is doing qualifications. Not real sure what that is but he is wanting a care package from home and would like to know what rules or regulations their are as to what they can receive???
Mimi, it isn't like boot camp -- that was enforced isolation for a particular purpose. Now he gets regular mail through a mail room. Anything a grandparent is likely to send shouldn't be a problem, and certainly anything he is asking for. I expect he arrived there with little more than a seabag. He probably wants a bunch of his stuff from home, including clothing and devices.
Hi Mimi, I just sent my son a package from home via UPS and also shipped him a few things from Amazon and he has received all. It was pretty much shoes, clothes and snacks he wanted. He was in the same PIR as your grandson and went to Groton. He should get it.
KTP ... Thank you so much for being so willing to be such a blessing of peace and support! That is such a releif to know that if my son would truly need a "mom" hug there is someone nearby that could possibly help him.
I am in Houston, TX so getting all the way north is not something that can be done very easily. THANK YOU!!!!
I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me. My son will go to Groton after BC. How long does it take to get their address? Do they have their own room or bunk like BC? Can they have visitors? Do they get liberty on holidays?
Hi LCmom - my son just arrived at Groton Sub School last Saturday, April 22 after BC. He sent us his address on Tuesday (so it took 3 days). He gave us two addresses - one for packages and one for letters. He has one roommate (so they are not in a big room like at BC). They do get Liberty, but I am not exactly sure how it works just yet. I know he basically works/attends school from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm (or 7:00 to 16:00 as he puts it). Hope that helps a little.
Hi LCmom, there is a great group called "Loved Ones of Groton, CT sailors" that you can join. They have been very helpful in answering questions. My son is finishing up his C school and has been there since last July.
Hi everyone, My grandson has just started his A school and seems to be doing great. Next week is his birthday and I want to get a cake delivered to him. On one of the pages I saw comments about a bakery in Groton that delivers on base. Does anyone know the name of this bakery?? It was described as being the best!! Thanks
Does anyone know how the sailors get internet in their rooms? He called Comcast to get a box and they told him he could do it online, but he's having trouble.
Wendy520 I asked my son. He just got there a week ago and his is setup. Here was his response
Yeah I did. I had to buy a router and a modem from the store that was xfinity compatible. Then I just called the company and had them register it over the phone also buy a coax cord all can be purchased from NEX
My son is at SubSchool in Groton CT and he said before he gets Liberty thia weekend he has to give a detailed itinerary of the places he will be this weekend. Can someone please confirm? I hope my son isnt trying to pull a fast one on me or the navy.
Thank you
Michelle 3 ... When my son stays on base then he is fine and does not have to report where he will be. If he is leaving base then you have to let them know where you are going and where you are staying and exactly what you are doing.
I think that's only when you are taking leave though not just liberty for the weekend.
That may be different depending on their liberty card color also. When you are on the first color I think you have to report everything all the time. As you get the other two colors he won't have to report as much or as often.
There are all kinds of things for which they need a permission referred to as a "chit". They definitely would need one to go beyond the liberty radius. It isn't a big deal. I happened to run across one of my son's where he swapped a watch with someone so they could visit family or something like that. It isn't that different in the fleet. They need to know where people are, whether they are available in case someone has to be relieved (sick, injured, family emergency, etc.), and how long it would take to recall everyone in case of emergency.
My SR will leave for A school in Groton in Aug. any chance that someone knows if they leave Saturday or Sunday? I know nothing is for sure but maybe some one might have an idea?
I can't believe that in 10 days my son will be arriving in Groton from Great Lakes for the next step in his Navy journey! So excited for him! We have family in Rhode Island, so will get to do visits to him and to extended family.
