CNO Announces New Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy

    Story Number: NNS120627-11Release Date: 6/27/2012 12:54:00 PM
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW) Kyle P. Malloy, Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Jonathan Greenert, announced his selection of FLTCM (AW/NAC) Michael D. Stevens as the 13th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) at a Pentagon press conference June 27.

"I was extremely proud to have such a highly and fully qualified group of candidates," said Greenert. "After a thorough and deliberate process I selected FLTCM Stevens to be our Navy's senior enlisted leader and my advisor for dealing in matters with enlisted personnel and their families."

"I'm honored to have been selected as the 13th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy," said Stevens. "MCPON Rick West has certainly made a lasting and positive impact on our Navy. I look forward to continuing to provide the leadership and commitment that our Navy and our Sailors both deserve and expect."

Stevens has served as the fleet master chief at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. since August 2010. His prior command master chief tours include U.S. 2nd Fleet, Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic, Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, and Naval Air Station Pensacola. A native of Montana, Stevens joined the Navy in 1983. He will relieve MCPON (SS/SW) Rick D. West during a ceremony Sept. 28 at the Washington Navy Yard.

"Throughout my career, and every Sailor's career, we've had chief petty officers take care of and shape us," said Greenert. "Master Chief Stevens has the leadership and experience to keep us on course and on speed. I look forward to working closely with him."

Greenert also praised West who took the helm in December 2008, citing his outstanding leadership and lifetime of dedicated service.

"I'm proud of MCPON West and what he has accomplished during his watch. His extraordinary leadership and terrific connection to the fleet has contributed greatly to our warfighting readiness and the readiness of our families," said Greenert. "His example has been a daily reminder to Sailors to live our ethos and to remember the important role families play in our successes."

The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy serves as an advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and to the Chief of Naval Personnel in matters of importance to enlisted personnel and their families. The MCPON is also an advisor to the many boards focused on enlisted personnel issues; is the enlisted representative of the Department of the Navy at special events; may be called upon to testify on enlisted personnel issues before Congress; and, maintains a liaison with enlisted spouse organizations.

    Hi guys (and gals),

I just had to join this group because I love the name!  There is something special about the male sense of humor.....actually, I am happy to be in the company of men-I taught in an all boys high school in Chicago for 14 years.  When first hired, I was one of four female teachers on a staff of about 125.  We had a lot of laughs in the teacher's lounge and I liked the more relaxed attitude of the guys.  I love a good cold beer (and not that light stuff, either) and watch "da Bears" from time to time with my sons.  I have kind of given up on the stinkin' Cubs.  I have read all of the posts in this group and it is a lot of fun! I love the "all in fun" banter between FTLW, LaLa, and the dads.  Great stress reliever while my boy is in boot camp.  Thanks for letting me join!

Ha, Ha...Guess what?! YOU are a "Featured Group"!

Click "Groups" up in the top where all the tabs are.

  • Concernedad

It's good to see all the women around here. We sure can use the interest, and uh...while you're here, if...uh....you wouldn't mind straightening things up a bit? Thanks. :)

  • Concernedad

Featured group?!!! We were supposed to be laying low here. To the man cave, Robin!

  • Rod

Bravo Zulu on your group.  My son is on the Ike, ABH2 (Bay PO Bay 2).  He has been in 8 years and going for 14.  This will be his first deployment on the Ike, but his 4th overall (3 on the Stennis).

I myself am a Navy vet, served in the Viet era (BM3).
Any questions I can answer just let me know.

  • JackFlash

Hi Rod-- Welcome aboard!  We are the few here, so we have to stick together.  We might even have to unionize, to avoid being "de-ported" by the Mermaid Mafia.  We can use your input here-- from someone with the whiskers that come from having been through it all.  My son is just starting the adventure, so my knowledge is limited.

  • Rod

Thanks jack flash. Anything I can help with let me know. The navy has changed a lot since my day, there are still some fundamentals. My advice that I gave to my son when he started was "pay attention to detail ". The biggest problem my son has with the new guys is some just don' t care and he does and has always been squared away. He is coming off a 2 year shore duty where he he was around nothing but E4s and above, but even there he had some slackers. You have to play the game if you want to advance and stay in especially in his rate.
  • Craig

Thank God, a group that isn't estrogen enriched.

My wife dragged me to watch "Magic Mike" yesterday; I'm beginning to question my sexual orientation.

You guys got to help me out!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

(Sigh)....Aye, Aye Capn' on the tidying things up ...I mean making things ship shape!

    Craig's on board!

Nice tutu Craig (which BTW that whole seen is just "wet your pants" laughing!)

Oh, I'm sorry you had to go see Magic Mike, (but nice of you to do so  for the wife!)...I don't drag hubby to see that stuff...now that I think about it...I barely watch it!

I just went and looked at our DVD collection and the only "chick flicks" I have are:

Anne of Green Gables and Steel Magnolias (and does Steel Magnolias really count?!)

I'll have you all know I was promoted to Second in Command on this wayward vessel! But I will try to behave myself.

Mermaid Mafia indeed! (ha,ha snort, snort!) Be glad we aren't these Mermaids:

  • Concernedad

    Rod,

Great to have you! Be careful about that answering questions offer, it may be a full time job around here.

So, what is your son's rating?

  • Concernedad

Craig, about time you got here. Magic Mike? Sheesh, did you have to check your gonads at the door?

  • Rod

Concernedad, He is an ABH2 and is the Hangar Bay 2 PO dayshift.  No probs with questions, I enjoy trying to help out.

  • abbyblue

must be the love women to have a man's group on a women's web site. can"t live without us can YA?

  • Concernedad

Someone's got to be around to correct all the misinformation......uhh, duck and cover guys!

  • Concernedad

Rod, guess I could Google it, but I'd rather hear from you. Not being military myself, the acronyms get away from me. Can you be just a tad more descriptive of what your son does?

  • Rod

He is an Aviation Boatswain Mate Handler second class.  The handlers work on the hangar deck and on the flight deck.  He is the Petty Officer in charge of Hangar Bay 2 of which there are 3 and is also a Director.  The handlers are essentially the "parking garage" guys.  Depending on your qualifications you may just chain and chock the planes when they are in place.  As you gain various quals (15 or more), you may drive the tractors that pull the planes out under direction of a Director (yellow shirt) if you are not a yellow shirt then you are a blue shirt.  Or you may run the elevators.  There can be more than one Director either in the bay or on deck.

There are three types of ABs - Handlers (blue shirts ABHs), Equipment (green shirts or ABEs) and Fuel (purples or grapes ABFs).

In addition, one big qualification that is now required is to get your AW (Aviation Warfare) pin.  Once you get that you can also qualify for SW (Surface Warfare).  If you are not an aviation rate then you work on SW and vice versa.  Therefore my son full title is ABH2 (AW/SW).

Does that help or did I give you to much info.?

  • Rod

Concernedad, dont know whether you had a chance to go on the boat, but I have some interior pics on my page.  I sent you a friend invite, if you want to go and look at them.

  • Craig

Concern - No I didn't leave my Gonads at the door.  However, I do have Acute Angina....

Do they have the same job on the Amphibious Assault Ships?

  • DramaSoul

Concernedad...do you know if The Carrier is available on Netflix? My son is attached to a carrier. He is a Corpsman going green side.
