Now hear this! Now hear this! This is a group for you Dads out there. If you've been to other groups and just can't find the information you're looking for, this would be the place to ask.
And gosh darn it, men have feelings and miss their sailors too!
So come onboard and batten down your hatches.

I joined the CNV-76 group and was following the links in the description.
I wanted to join the CVN76 family care group, but I have been unable to find a link that will work.
Anyone happen to have one? Or know if this is still available.

B'snukemom...Sorry I just found this email. I didn't log into my email for a couple of days and there were over 500!!! Warner Pacific is a small private college in what is considered SW Portland. I don't know much about it except that I have heard good things. I know someone who got an MA from there (in business?). Sorry I am not much help! PM me and I will get you my phone number. Maybe we can grab a cup of coffee?

I've been thinking it's a little quiet over here too. Seems like most fathers don't seem to mind going on whatever other group is specific to their child's status or rate. Anybody dealing with anything specific to being a father of a sailor. I've just been so proud to see the change in my son. I hope at least some of it was from what we taught him but he wouldn't give us the satisfaction of seeing as a snotty teenager. But the maturity he displays now following bootcamp and the first few weeks of nulcear A school has been tremendously gratifying and makes me feel much better about his future.

Yeah, I've got my sailor home on leave now, and with my daughter also home visiting, it's the first time we've all been together in 3 years. So proud to say both of my kids have turned out great. However, once leave is over, he's headed to Bahrain, so I'll have something new to worry about.

Had the best Friday yesterday. With my son home on leave, we went to the gym together (we did VERY different work outs). Then we went to see "Star Trek Into The Darkness" which we both enjoyed. After a bite to eat it was home again. Just so much fun to hang out with him and talk.

One of the great things compared to his last couple of years at home is that our son seems to love to tell us about his school and life at Goose Creek. It's like talking to a real adult. You can tell he's found something meaningful to do with his life and is feeling great about that. So far it's only been through Skype but we hope to get him back home for a visit between A school and Nuclear Power school sometime in October.

My daughter was telling us about Google Voice. This should be a great option while our son is in Bahrain. You can create your own phone number and leave messages on it, and it turns them into email form. It can go direct to their phone or computer. You all might want to check it out if you haven't already.

My sailor headed back to San Diego yesterday. A bit sad having the house all quiet again. He's headed to Bahrain tomorrow, so I guess he is officially off on his adventure now. Almost two years of training. Now the real learning begins. I feel the concern coming on again. And here I thought about changing my name to "not so concernedad".

The Tour de France (I love Le Tour...in spite of the debacle Lance created. Been following it since 1972!)? The All-Star Game? Otherwise it's just work, work, work!
Jul 16, 2013
Concernedad
In truth, Lance didn't create the debacle. He was just like Barry Bonds in that he was one of the many doing the same thing, but it's the best who gets the attention.
He had a quote, something to the effect of, "it was impossible to win the Tour in my era without doping"
Pretty accurate. The year he was booted, so was the second place winner...and the third place guy and so on.
Like major league baseball right now, except the French were pushing to slam Armstrong, whereas major league baseball does their best to cover it up
Jul 18, 2013
DramaSoul
Concernedad....They have been doping since the beginning of Le Tour. There was a British cyclist in the '60's who collapsed going up Mont Ventoux and later died. The autopsy showed he had amphetamines in his system which contributed to the dehydration that ultimately killed him.
I understand Lance's comments and I know it was true that they vacated all the years he won and could not find someone clean on whom to bestow the Maillot Jeune. He certainly took doping to a new level. I tried so hard to believe his denials and defended him. His arrogance and George Hincapie admitting it as well finally got to me. (George was a fave of mine.) I am not a Barry Bonds fan either. These guys think they are so much better than everyone that they can get away with anything they want. I have zero respect for any of them.

I thought that it was an issue with a non frenchman winning for so many years, I was suprised that they were correctly pointing the finger at him.
It is sad that an honest competitor feels that they do not have a chance and you must cheat to win.
Hopefully they will get this all straightened out and truly level the playing field for all cyclist.
Jul 20, 2013
Concernedad
As long as the money is there, so will people be looking for ways to cheat. Lance's problem was his arrogance.
Personally, my belief was, once he got testicular cancer, there was no way he wouldn't be on steroids. Just a "coincidence" he started performing better after his cancer than before.

Dan...This year's Tour has been exciting and fun to watch. While Chris Froome of SKY has had it locked up for the last several days with a 5 minute lead, the race for the rest of the podium has been great. There are new young cyclists coming up from the all over the world. As far as I can tell at this time, it appears that 90% of the cyclists are clean. Because it's the 100th Tour, the stages have been sooo difficult and challenging (who ever heard of going up l'Alpe-d'Huez TWICE??). The oldest rider this year is a favorite of mine who is riding for the US team RadioShack...Jens Voight who is 41 and still going strong. He had a horrible crash a couple of years ago and it's amazing to see him still able to compete at this high level and helping to train the next generation of cyclists.
I would say that it appears the playing field is more level. There are still those who look for an edge in doping and testing is always behind in trying to catch the latest PEDs. I guess it will be ever thus...no matter what sport.
Jul 20, 2013
DramaSoul
Concernedad...There was a suggestion not too long ago by a physician that the use of PEDs prior to his cancer might have actually contributed to it. I know that he was given EPO while going through chemo. I remember Lance before cancer and after. He was an incredible Triathlete prior to taking up just cycling. He also has a freaky lung capacity (the highest they had tested when he was in his late teens). He was performing unbelievably well before and yes...he certainly took it to a new level after.
Jul 20, 2013
Concernedad
It's not just the PEDS possibly causing the cancer, but if you have testicular cancer, certainly there are hormones you are having prescribed, therefore Lance got a bit of a pass on how he was tested.
I paid no attention to the Tour this year, and usually I follow it closely. Lost interest.
Now to baseball. Obviously the MLB has little interest in having all the top players exposed so are treading very lightly on who and how players get punished. I'm sure this whole recent mess was something they would have happily swept under the carpet if they could have. Hurts the sport tremendously when it is released that all the top players are cheating. Then you have a guy like Chris Davis and how can you not be convinced he's doping? Suddenly, inexplicably, his bat speed improved on its own?

Hi Dads! One of you recommended watching Top Gear and I finally watched it when my Corpsman was home. GREAT SHOW!!! Oh my...what a good giggle! We had a blast watching it together. Thanks for the recommendation.
Also...anyone see "Captain Phillips"? I saw it with my son while he was home. I thought it was an excellent film...quite the emotional roller coaster ride.

Concernedad
Yes, Captain Phillips was good. However, I looked into the true story, and had to wonder, here was a Captain clearly told not to wander off the path all the ships take, got in trouble because of it, and the Navy had to bale him out. Does the private corporation reimburse the Navy for all the manpower expense?

Drama, I don't recall what sort of ship your son is on, but if you haven't seen the 10 part documentary, "Carrier", I would highly recommend it.

It was in the 70's there last week! He just qualified to be the ACLS instructor. His soft orders popped for his next billet...gonna be green side in Japan.
