louann: My son is a yeoman also. Yes, I know what you mean about being far away! Maybe he can put down Norfolk as his 2nd choice? They rarely get their first choice....well, if he knows that, he may put San Diego as his 2nd or 3rd choice! :-)

clclrt: Not sure if the A stands for apprentice or is just the first letter in the alphabet! HA! Couldn't find an explanation of it through google.
  • khoov00 (Kara)

When do they fill out the request for their choices? Once he classes up my sons A school will only be 6 weeks so I'm on pins and needles wondering when we'll find out where he will end up. San Diego would be nice, since we are in CA, but I think he's aiming for farther away than that. He's been the military type for a long time and tells me stuff on a need to know basis so I rely on N4M's to give me more information (which always amazes him, now when he tells me something he asks me if I already knew).

I think A school is just the first letter because my hubby went to both A & B school.

Hi Everyone, my son graduated 10/15 and is attending A School at GL. I don't know much other than he is going to be a Medical Corpsman. He did mention that the Marines will be needing alot of corpsman and they may need them sooner than later which I am not going to even think about. Anyway, I'm glad I'm here!
  • DrewsMomRita

    Hi LindaB,
My son Drew also grad on 10/15 and is A School at GL to be Medical Corpsman! He said he won't start for a few days, maybe a week or so, but I have heard that sometimes they don't have enough for a new class, so they have to wait until they have so many to get a class going. Did your son; tell you when his A School starts? I bet they will be same calss...

"A" School , the A is for Apprentice... And it is where they go to start learning their job before joining a fleet...
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Hi DrewsMomRita, My son said that they will probably start "officially" by the last week of October, or the first week of November. They probably will be in the same class!!! I hope that it doesn't affect any liberty they may get for the Christmas holidays.
  • DrewsMomRita

LindaB...I hope it doesn't either. Drew said they will have Xmas leave for two weeks! I bet they will be in the same class. He also mentioned the Marines ...ugggh... and said they were waiting for enough in a class to start A School. I hope next week. The sooner they get out, the sooner they move on... I think they all get the Xmas time off, no matter when they start. Someone said the base basically shuts down from Dec 17 to Jan 2.
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

DrewsMomRita, Thanks for the info on Christmas leave. That's what I heard too. That they encourage the sailors to go home for the holidays;.I know, my son mentioned the Marines as well...ugggh is right! That is what my son said that they were waiting for enough people for classes. I guess we just have to wait & see!
  • Cathi

Please help me to spread the word, i'm trying to reach as many mom's as possible.

    INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the holidays coming up, I can see where this could be a real problem.

The newest virus circulating is the UPS/Fed Ex/USPS Delivery Failure. You will receive an e-mail from UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS along with a packet number. It will say that they were unable to deliver a package sent to you on such-and-such a date. It then asks you to print out the invoice copy attached. DON'T TRY TO PRINT THIS. IT LAUNCHES THE VIRUS! Pass this warning on to all your PC operators at work and home. This virus has caused millions of dollars in damage in the past few days. Snopes confirms that it is real.

Hello. My son's PIR is Dec 3. His job has been changed which I do not know yet. However, what I do know is that he will be some where in Mississippi. Can anyone tell what A-Schools are in Mississippi? Thanks
  • kellig

Lou2, my son is an AG and is in A school in Biloxi. He is on Keesler Air Force base. There were some that were on the flight down with him that went to Gulfport (I think) but I have no idea what rate they were. Good luck!
  • Renie ship12 Div33

I am so new at this. My son is in great lakes now in bootcamp and will do his A school out in great lakes as he is in missle guidance. His PIR is 01-7-11 and not sure when his school will start. Is there any information if they get a week or days off after the graduation.Mom2wrranch
  • semaggie

Help!!! I need some advice here!! Daughter will be coming home for Xmas from San Diego to NH/due back on 1/3. Should I get her plane ticket back for 1/2 just in case of any weather delay????
  • kellig

Renie, you may have already got this answer, but if he is grad and go there is a chance he will get to stay with you for the weekend. He will have to leave you after PIR to move over (and I heard it takes quite a few hours to process) but then he can stay with you. Mine was grad and go to Mississippi but others in his division got to spend the weekend. If he isn't grad and go, you will have to pick him up in the morning and drop him off at night - they will tell you the times. It is just the weekend unless Monday is some type of a holiday (ours had Monday off because it was Columbus day but we didn't find out they had it off until just a couple weeks before PIR).

semaggie, this is just personal opinion but I would always give extra time. We are in MN so we are used to things being cancelled/changed due to weather and automatically try to have an alternate plan.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
  • John and Yvonne

    semaggie,

I agree with kellig. Give extra time to travel. Any delay that comes up can have bad effects if you schedule it too close. Most of the time it is not needed, but the extra time gets rid of a lot of unnecessary stress.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

    John .
  • rockwido(S07Div359)

    Renie,
My son had PIR on 11/5/10 and is just now classing up (Monday). He did get to see us after PIR and on that Sat and Sun. As I understand it some sailors got an overnight, our son did not. He moved across the road on that Tuesday and has been there ever since waiting on class to start. It was really hard at first because they are used to being told what to do every minute in bc and if they don't go straight into school they are given "busy" work to do, I think my son got a little depressed but I just spoke to him , he is making new friends and they went to Chicago today and he sounds ready to start school Good Luck

Hi! Was wondering when your Sailors where coming home for Christmas..I was told mine had to buy his own ticket at GL which he did..they gave him an 0950 flight on the 17th! I am wondering what is the earliest they can leave base for Ohare? I am really worried he is not going to make such an early morning flight. Anyone else know anything..also he was told he has to bring ALL personal belongings home due to the fact there has been thefts when others leave their stuff. Seems strange to me but that is what he was told. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
  • lj1422 (Josh's mom)

They start processing the Sailors out very early in the wee hours of the morning and the buses and taxis start taking the Sailors to the airports early in the morning. I think they will make sure they get them to the airport on time...remember they have been helping them do this for years. My son told me they just need to make sure that all valuables are locked in their locker because there will be workers and people through the buildings....they should all have lockers.
  • proudchobeesailormom

Thanks so much Josh's mom..I just can do so much better here at home with just a little info. My son is not one to give me much info so I like to know more than he gives. I appreciate it alot!
  • lj1422 (Josh's mom)

Mine was the same way, but after a while he started giving me much more info, I guess it was because he is more comfortable with what he is doing and where he is at. It just takes time...I talked to him tonight and he said the first bus leaves the base at around 4 am..just make sure he signed up to a bus to take him to the airport. Josh told me they fill up pretty fast because it was only 18 dollars. Ask all you want if we can help we will.
  • Jen - Ship10mom(Div340)

What are y'all thinking of getting your Sailors for Christmas? When I ask him, I get and I don't know, so yes I am stumped!
    Thanks guys!
  • lj1422 (Josh's mom)

Jen, it is hard to buy for them don't you think? They don't need clothes....anything electronic is probably not reasonable because of going off to a ship or like mine is going to an island in the Indian Ocean. We are getting him a webcam for his computer so we can see each other and we can skype while he is on the island. They say NEX cards are a good idea.
  • Jeffsmom1380

My son comes home from Groton December 17th for Christmas! Sadly, he has to be back by 7 am on the 27th. Can't wait to see my boy!

is there graduation for a school and does the family get to go

  • Delia41~SHIP03~DIV018

Ok, I have questions?? My son is coming home on Christmas eve. He informed me last night that he needs to have all of his travel info ASAP. Because he needs to give it to "them" by friday. This friday! Ok,  I have everything scheduled and I am planning on overnighting it to him after work. First question: Who? needs what? by friday?  Also- Is there some other way to get this info there faster such as a fax number or? as well as mail. These tickets are will call, but he says he still needs copies. I have tried to ask him these things but can't get the answers I need. Also, I am guessing since he is traveling by bus, that he will be able to get to the bus station from there. Sorry to sound so clueless, but at this point, and so close to Christmas, I'm stressing just a little. haha. Anyone that can help me with any of this would be a huge help. Thank you.

  • Delia41~SHIP03~DIV018

Thank you marine navymom- He does have his laptop, and i emailed the info to him, I will also have him locate a fax number. And I am trying to locate his base directly. Thank you so much for your help!

  • Delia41~SHIP03~DIV018

Yes, thankfully it has. I believe it was when I said," if you don't go to print it out, then you won't be able to come home!" Ha that seemed to get the ball rolling. Thanks everyone.
  • Jeffsmom1380

Happy Holidays to all! My boy is home!

  • ISH-MOM

What is expected in A School?  My son started on Jan 4. and he really hasnt said much yet.  Easier to deal with since he has a cell phone/lap top that we can comunicate more.

    cara

  • annemarie

    BoopzHart,

My son is also in Goose Creek.  He says things are moving slowly.  this past we was filled with informational briefings and classes will start for his program (ET) on Tuesday the 18th.  Hopefully, there will be a lot of studying to do so there isn't so much down time.  Communication with him is only fair - the cell phone reception  and internet service leaves a lot to be desired but it's a whole lot better than boot camp.

  • MN Mom of MM

My son arrived Jan 8 at Goose Creek for A school.  Says he loves it there and was to start classes Jan 18.  Any other moms with kids in 1116 ?

  • Mossgirl4

My son just arrived Wednesday at Port Hueneme. I think going from Chicago snow to sunshine and palm trees has had a very positive effect, but I haven't gotten much info outside of that!
  • Jeffsmom1380

Does anyone know what kind of graduation ceremony is held for BESS? My son's is Feb. 11. He wants us to come so I was wondering what it was about.
    Thanks!
  • Jen - Ship10mom(Div340)

anyone have any experience with a suddend STOP in communication the last few weeks of A-school?  My sailor is an AM in P-cola right now... and should be finishing up his A-school as his orders *were* to be @ Whidbey Island 14 Feb 2011
