Hi Group! My son just arrived at camp Pendleton this morning. Can anyone give me a little info on the training? He said he thinks he will have weekends off.. All I know is he will be 2 mar div, Portsmouth, VA. Thanks!

Hi Maria, it's been over a year since my son graduated FMTB at CP but here's what I remember.  Access the base thru the main gate, they'll check your ID and let them know you're attending graduation for FMTB and they'll direct you (basically, it's a left at the 1st light and then follow around and you'll see signs directing to the location).  I arrived around 8:00-8:30am and think it started between 9:00-9:30  and lasted about an hour.  It was outside in front of the classrooms, they had bleachers set up.  Feel free to go into the classrooms 1st PLT to the left, 2nd in the middle and 3rd to the right.  They'll be playing the training video inside the classrooms and you'll get to chat with your son prior to the ceremony.  Everyone heads out right after graduation, their bags are all in a tent behind the bldg.  Here's a link to my pictures:

Thanks guys for the help! I will watch the video tonight! :) I will let him know about the food. I know he had trouble with that in San Antonio. How long is training here?

  • vettespace

Hi Maria, my corpsman graduated CP FMTB in June 2010.  He was flying out to his permanent duty station a couple days later, so I booked a place in Old Town San Diego, he had his bags packed and we left right after the ceremony and he stayed with me until his flight left San Diego.  It will just depend upon where/when your son is headed as to how much time you'll have.  Hopefully, if he's flying out, he'll be able to stay with you and you can get him to airport.  If he's staying there, you should have plenty of time to visit.

just found out my son is in the e.r. camp pendleton naval hospital heat exhaustion. passed out during the last hike. Does anyone know if this will affect his graduating. He is ok. thank God. But it would be such a shame if he isnt able to graduate. He has done really good all the way through. He doesnt know and is VERY upset. Thanks for all the info !
  • stevensmom

    Mariaandysmom....we live in Manteca CA.
  • vettespace

Hi stevensmom, there's a possibility that he may not be able to participate in the actual ceremony, but may be able to still graduate.  If that's the case he may be assigned to watch the bags in the tent behind the classroom facility during the ceremony.  I've read where this has happened to some others in the past.  The main thing is that he heals from the heat exhaustion!  Congrats to all of the upcoming grads!
  • NanZam

    Hello Everyone,

  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

I'm in the new group...my son will starting in October. Currently he is working in the ER at the Naval Hospital. He loves it. Its nice to be following your experiences so that I can have some kind of insight as to what to expect. Congratulations to all your sailors and their accomplishments. Let me know what to expect for graduation. Luckily, I only have less than an hour drive to CP and we have been making regular trips. Our son comes home every weekend. Mostly to do his laundry at our laundramat.."Mom's washer/dryer". Funny he never appreciated the appliances before. Take care and have a wonderful final week.
  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

@Stevensmom I hope your son recovers quickly. I will keep him in my prayers.
  • stevensmom

leaving for San Diego Wed. cant wait for graduation friday..decided to fly to save time.. spend time sight seeing as well. congrats to all the other graduates..God Bless our sailors!
  • stevensmom

Steven out of the hospital..doing well..looking forward to Graduation..and coming home for a couple days before his next post. Thanks again for all your support!
  • zStratMom

New info to all the Moms for Grad. They changed process and we will see Pinning! For all of you unfamiliar w/area . . . Take 5 north from San Diego, exit is after the 76 off ramp. When you get on base, it's first left (Wire line road???), back over the 5 and then left again. You will see signs.

My son said ceremony is at 10, but will confirm.

Recommendation is to get there plenty early, due to parking constraints and limited bleachers. DOES ANYONE NEED A WHEELCHAIR for a family member? I have one and can bring it.

Steven's mom - heard all about your son from two sailors over the weekend.

  • zStratMom

Ladies - I am going to stop and pick up some flowers before FMTB graduation on Friday. You'll know it's me, so stop and introduce yourself.
  • stevensmom

So excited..heading to San Diego tomorrow..see you all at the F.M.T.B graduation!
  • zStratMom

Created an event "Meet @ the Bleachers, FMTB Graduation"
  • zStratMom

OMG, Lori - I'm laughing away. I'm sorry he didn't get to be a part of the ceremony, but -- really, a pillowfight?? Thanks for sharing.
  • jesspoo05

  • zStratMom

Greetings, moms! I enjoyed sharing our son's ceremony and meeting several of you. This week marks the "new" normal--my corpsman son has spent the last nine months away from family (BC, A-School, FMTB). Now, some attention diverts to my second son's preparation for BC in two months. Very soon I'll be departing on that "here we go again" ship!
  • Rena'(Dylan's mom)

Congrats to all that just graduated. It sounds like an impressive ceremony. I can't wait to go. My son starts next week but I guess he has already started with the (mis)information... He told me he thought they would graduate on Dec 14. That is a Wednesday, so I am REALLY hoping he is wrong. I hope Gloria's son is right. Friday would be much better for my family...lol

Today has been one yr since Dylan joined. He has been in school or waiting to class up for school for an entire yr. I can't wait for FMTB to be finished for him and then he can settle down to life as a working Navy Sailor....

To everyone that gave me all the helpful advice on finding auto mechanics in the area a Big Thank You! It took almost 3 weeks but he finally has a car again and he can get out and enjoy sunny Southern California...

  • das2

Maybe next week we can find out the real graduation date. I see several dates and my Son has orders that gives Dec 11 as his graduation date. My Son thinks they will decide and let everyone know after they class up. He thinks uncertainty is the norm.

  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

Congrats to all the new grads (x3-BC,A, FMTB) and your families. Enjoy your next journey and let us know what to expect on next leg. My son starts next week. He has enjoyed working in the ER these last 2 1/2 months after A school. He's learned alot. I've been very fortunate to have him home every weekend since August and I hope he can continue to do that thru FMTB. I've also enjoyed having his buddies also stay with us and provide them with a home away from home and homemade meals.

ZstratMom, I think we are on that same ship.  My nephew (just like my son, he lives with us) is also preparing for BC in the next couple of months while my son will be starting FMTB next week.  I'm hoping it will not be too cold for the next PIR in GL. It was chilly in mid May but I can't imagine what it will be like in real winter weather...Burrrrr!

Good luck to everyone leaving and welcome to everyone joining me on this new phase.

  • Rena'(Dylan's mom)

Graduation on Dec 11 would be awesome! That is Dylan's 20th bday. He spent last yr in bootcamp for his bday. He PIR'ed on Dec 15 and yes GL in winter is MISERABLE. However it did snow and I was super impressed with how their city takes care of the roads. Here in Ok a few inches of snow brings us to a halt sometimes in GL they had it off the road as fast as it came down..

  • das2

I would not count on any grad date until they class up next week,
  • Rena'(Dylan's mom)

I just got off the phone with Dylan and he says his orders say that graduation is Dec 16. He says its a nice ceremony and from what some of you have posted I can't wait.....
  • zStratMom

Cali-Mom -- my first PIR was March (my son had arrived at the exact same time as that massive blizzard last January). March in GL is WICKED COLD for us Californians . . . although nowhere near as cold as January. I fly back east frequently, so I've experienced feeling like a peoplecicle, but SON #2 has NEVER been in that type of cold. He'll have to adapt. Means the PIR will be February (YUCK). To all of you who love the white flakey stuff, forgive me. I am a confessed weather wuss.
  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

Rena, That's the same date my son has Dec 16.
zStratMom, I'm with you I'm a weather wuss too. My first PIR was in May 6th and it was cold then too....not as cold as Feb. In Feb that's when my son first got to GL. It was a shock for him. I am not looking forward to the winter in GL but I will have to endure it one more time. I will need a good winter coat.
  • stevensmom

Zstrat mom....I just found out my middle son who is a junior in high school. Now will be going into the Navy as well. although he is choosing a law enforcement type job. I have a little time to get used to  the idea. But here we go again!! Hopefully when he goes his pir at great lakes wont be in winter, ours was in january last time..-8 degrees..BRRR!  So hope everyone is having a great weekend.. take care all!
  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

Well our Sailors started their new adventure today. I hope they are doing well and getting readjusted to their new surroundings. They will not get liberty for the next 3 weeks (according to my son). But in Nov they get several long weekends. Well here we go again. At least now we have a little more experience with all of this.

I spent this past weekend hosting Homecoming dinner and a driver for a few of my daughter's (HS Sophomores) friends.  When I volunteered for this I thought a few meant 5-6 girls/boys. What do you think my daughter's version of a few meant? Well it meant 18 of her closest few friends. And I'm still dealing with the fallout of the drama of Homecoming. What was I thinking....I should have known better.....Lessoned learned.

  • IDCmom#1

I swear I posted a message earlier asking which moms/dads had sailors attending Camp Pendleton FMTB this Oct-Dec 2011 but I must have typed it in invisible ink because I can't see it!

I think I am seeing Gloria, Rena, Cali-Mom.  Any others out there?

We seem to have a variety of graduation dates.  My son's orders have Dec 15.  Wish the FMTB-West site was up to date.

Cali-Mom, what kind of weather should we expect in Dec?  Winter coats, gloves, nose warmer, or lighter weight Fall type jacket?

  • zStratMom

    D

ocsmom - San Diego / Oceanside weather in winter is mild. Could have a chilly early morning (50-60 degrees) with a marine layer; bring a light coat. Days should warm to 70s, depending on what ever weather pattern we're experiencing. A hoodie / sweat jacket will often do the trick for transitioning throughout the day. Or, something on the level of a light London Fog raincoat. Use your Florida weather as a general guide. Nothing. I repeat: Nothing like going to northern realms. Also, check in with an online 5-10 day weather forecast before you pack.

Now - I will admit to keeping those stretch knit gloves in my coat pocket at all times and I use the seat warmer in the car (year round)--but I am an avowed weather wuss and absolutely, positively loathe being cold. ;-)

  • IDCmom#1

zStratMom, thanks so much for the advice.  I've been in the south so long that I just don't tolerate cold weather well.  Yep, I am also a weather wuss!

  • IDCmom#1

For those of us who have sailors in the current FMST (FMTB) course at Camp Pendleton, I just called the S3 at the school and spoke to a Chief who told me that graduation is Dec 15, 2011.

When I told him that there seemed to be a lot of confusion, he said he would be sure the word got out to the students.

  • Rena'(Dylan's mom)

I really do believe Navy life might kill me from confusion and I'm not even in the Navy. Now I REALLY don't know when to be in SD. Dylan said his orders say the 16th and originally he had told me graduation would be the 14th and now possibly the 15th... my brain is spinning...
Stevensmom, I sympathize with the news of the 2nd sons news of leaving. My youngest(13) told me I needed to help him decide whether he should be a marine infantry soldier, a bomb difuser or a tank machine gunner... I told him I needed 3 new choices... lol...he however has said since he was 4 that he wanted to be a Marine so I have had plenty of time to prepare with this one...
RuthVH, so awesome that you get to spend a little quality time with your cub, hopefully he will be on a very short deployment and be back before you know it... I can't help but be a dreamer....lol
So I guess I don't need to pack a bathing suit for a dip in the ocean in December???
  • IDCmom#1

Rena, the 15th is definitely the date.  S3 is the Plans/Operations/Academics section of the school.  The Chief I spoke to was very adamant about the date.

I grew up a military brat and also worked for the military so I know how you feel about the confusion.  That's why I figured, after reading all the different dates, that I should get some clarification.

  • Rena'(Dylan's mom)

Thanks docsmom, I woulda been heartbroken if I showed up on the 16th and had already missed it. I will have to tell Dylan to slow down and read his orders again... He is doing SOMETHING on the 16th.....lol
  • IDCmom#1

Rena, I think that some people typing orders don't have the complete course information so just put what they think would be close. Where will he be going after the course?  Is it somewhere so near that he could be reporting on the 16th?
