Paula, your daughter has been in there much longer then my son, wow she has been around, please thank her from me, I am very grateful to her and all of the men and women who serve our country. Will she be done after 4 years, or is she staying in? So far it looks like Oak Brook is good for all of us.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ruth, your son is in GL that is really nice, I would have to go see him every weekend.LOL That is only an hour from me. We can always go to Gurnee Mills to. Lots of shopping there and we could take your son out for lunch. I will have to check out your blog. Sorry to hear about your Dad, how is he doing, I will keep him in my prays and thoughts. WOW Ruth you are one busy lady. That is the best way to celebrate their birthday, I spend a lot of time on skype, I love seeing my son. Does anyone else use skype? I am so glad you ladies are here and we don't live that far from each other. We will have to pick a date and meet up that is for sure. Ruth what is your sons name and what is his job? I know we cannot tell everything about our sailors but I would love to know his name.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Paula you must be so proud, she must love what she is doing. I love Magianno's on Oak Brook, lets see if we can pick a date, I will check my calendar and lets go, that would be so much fun.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Hi, I think any day next week is good for me! How does it look for everyone else? Yes we have to do it before the Holidays or we will have to wait until January and then you never know how the weather is going to be! LOL
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

November 4th is good for me around 6:30, so far so good!

I love the Rock Island it is so ez to get around, I know what you are saying Ruth but I do miss my son very much, I never thought he would be so far away from me. But he is happy so that is all that matters to me.
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

I deleted my previous message because I might have written too much info.I want to add, too, that while we aren't sad he's in the Navy, we do miss him. Here's some of the message that Debbie responded to:

My son is an instructor GM on the simulation range at the RTC. He says he runs a daycare! Some of our recruits don't know how to follow directions. He says it might be the simulation range, but they have to take it seriously because he won't let them go to the live range if they don't. I've heard that he also tells the recruits to write their moms!

When he went into the Navy, we knew it was what he'd wanted to do for a long time (Boy Scout and jrROTC). While we miss him, it's rare that I'm sad that he's away. Actually, we talk more now than when he was living at home! He calls all the time. Even when he was deployed on the Roosevelt he called from every port; when he was in poppyland for almost a year, he called almost everyday. He is divorced and has two little girls that we see a lot now. He calls them when we have them, too.

We raised him to be independent and a good man, so how can we be sad that he has become what we wanted him to be? I also had a chief tell me that the Navy owns him now, not his momma. I couldn't be prouder.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Annie I did not know that I will have to go to Walmart, thanks, I know Sears on 111th and Cicero also has a hero's wall plus they do donate tools and other items to sailors. Annie would love to have you the more the better.

How is the 4th sounding for everyone?

Hi Ruth! I know what you are saying, I am just glad my son is happy and doing great. He is going to the ball on Friday, he is selling tickets for it and then he will sell tickets at the door and then he can party. LOL I would love to see him in his uniform, how handsome he is going to look!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ruth did you say your son is at Great Lakes?
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Paula thanks for doing that, hope we get lots.

Annie if you are going lets carpool!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Thanks Mary, I like to hear about our sailors. Just don't forget everyone bring pictures I would love to see pictures, if you have any. LOL

    Ok Annie!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

Good news--my son's LPO (lead petty officer) has offered him a ride to the airport now. Thank you, Paula, for offering to take him--that was so generous considering it was so out of your way. I agree, though, I would have done the same--Navy moms are like that!

On another positive note--his phone has been giving him problems for months. AT&T told him he had to go to the store he bought it at--Norfolk. I went to AT&T at the mall in Moline and talked to an employee who was a ten year Army veteran. No more problems--he did whatever he had to do in the computer and my son can go to Gurnee and resolve the problem.

I am exhausted tonight! Took two Brownies (one my son's daughter) to Iowa City to Girl Scout University. Four try-it's earned; a walk around the Old Capitol; another walk around the Herbert Hoover Presidential National Park; she's asleep on the couch and I'm not far behind!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ruth, I bet you are tired, just put your feet up and relax, enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Lovemysailor, we would love to have you, this is going to be some get together. I am from Alsip.
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

I thought about coming to the get together, but decided that since I'm driving to Houston and Tucson in November, I'd better stay home and get ready. The location would be so easy for me, but it's still about 3 hours away. It's an hour's drive for my sailor, but he might just show up to meet all of you. He met a few of you in February and enjoyed himself.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ruth you will be missed, maybe we will meet one day, 3 hours is a drive for a weekday.

Pauls, thanks for making the reservations for us, can't wait. How many do we have coming?
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Sounds good, we are going to have so much fun, thanks Paula for taking care of us!

Annie, we have to talk before Wednesday!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

I sent my son all the info, so I hope he comes. You can ask all kinds of questions. He's been described as "a squared away sailor" and thrives on the Navy.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

LOL a bunch of women we could be kind of scarey. LOL Would love to have your son Ruth. Well just talked to Annie last night we are coming together, and we are both bad with directions. LOL but we will be there. Can't wait! Don't forget to bring some pictures!!!
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Thanks Paula, I think for ten is good. I will not forget pictures. I invited another mom just today she lives in Downers Grove, her name is Michelle, I don't know if she will come just wanted to let you know. I will IM you so I can get your number, see everyone on Wed around 6:30. Thanks Proud ABH we will miss you!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

I'm reminding my son again about tomorrow night. Don't know if he can make it, but I'll bug him about it!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

Ugh. He just called me. Got called into the Chief's office and told his name is going on the IA (Individual Augmentee) list to go back to Afghanistan. The Chief told him that since he just got back in December, he most likely won't have to go, but because he's single, his name is submitted. He's divorced and has two little girls he adores--they don't consider his kids. He escaped serious injury by an IED already; I don't want him to have to go again.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

we have one more coming her name is Michelle and she lives in Downers Grove.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Ruth, is he comes we will take good care of him. LOL

Ruth, I am so sorry to hear that, I will keep him in my prays and thoughts. Keep us updated! We are here for you!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

Being on a carrier is no guarantee--he was on the Roosevelt and sent to Afghanistan the first time. Honestly though, he volunteered so he could get off the carrier cause he hated it. Too big and impersonal for him. He thought his next duty would be a frigate in two years. I hope that's what happens as planned. He said if he has to go, he'll be there by April and would have three months training at Ft. Bragg maybe. The first time he was at Ft. Riley, Kansas, for three months. I don't know what happened to the three years at Great Lakes--he hasn't been there a year yet!
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

What a relief--prayers do work! I just got a 10 second call to tell me he's not going to Afg. He wants to go to San Diego in two years.
  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

Now a text message--he doesn't get off work till 6, so he won't make it to Oak Brook. There will be other times. The pic is from the Navy Ball.
  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Well Michelle look at you here on the site. LOL Glad you are here! Yes that is very nice that Applebee's is doing that but no Applebee's in Italy!!!

That is for sure that all of our acting military and veterans should be thanked today and everyday.

  • Debbie (Stephen's mom)

Paula, you are a hoot! LOL I told you the memory goes first!!!!! I would love to go on a Tiger Cruise, but I guess I have to get Stephen on the water first. What history you have in your family. My father was in the Coast Gurad, he wanted Stephen to go into the line of service but he did not want too, but they both ended up on the water. My Dad is 88 and he tells the same stories also but I love to hear them because I know one day he will not be here to tell them, we are lucky to still have our parents. WOW and he is a writer that is wonderful, you really have a neat family. I will keep Holly in my prays and thoughts, I bet she loves what she does.
