For parents and loved ones of deployed and deploying military personnel...Aghanistan/Iraq and any and all war zones. Please introduce yourself on the main comment page.
My son tells me this was an Austin native, prayers to his family. I hope we can attend his services in Killeen on Tuesday.
Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 11, 2011. The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Petty Officer Brian K. Lundy, 25, of Austin, Texas, died while conducting a dismounted patrol in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Sept. 9. Lundy was assigned as a hospital corpsman to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Yeah, my first thoughts are usually about those who lost a buddy, and still there trying to do the job safe and sound. I left a comment in the guestbook in our local paper for this young Doc's family, and told them that Navy families across the country share their loss and heartbreak.
But you, Ms Chief, go for two nights of great sleep, you need it!!
Just one personal note, my son told me about this young corpsman, and he asked after any of you who might have loved ones in the 1/6. Don't identify yourselves here, just know there's other corpsmen grieving these Docs lost in the 1/6 , and thinking of you and your kids right now. I read a bit of their postings on fb, they all come together to share, I'm very thankful they reach out to one another, just like we do. Truly we have to remember that we are not alone, you are not alone...
TDM, that made me proud and sad all at the same time. My heart goes out to all affected by this young man. I open my heart and prayers for his family. I can't imagine what you guys go thru because my sailor is not in Afghanastan but I think of those men/women everyday. Thank you for sharing that.

Please help support The Reynolds Family. Sean Reynolds is a shipmate of my daughter. He has lost His family that was in a head on collision in TX on their way to meet him for his homecoming from serving our country on the US Ronald Reagan. He has lost his brother and parents and needs help with all of the expenses. Please help me to raise money for this young man who is serving our country.

Kelly, is there more information on Sean and his family? and a maybe a link to a way to donate that does not involve shopping? I ran a search on google and came up with nothing. I'll keep looking.
I'm not comfortable with promoting someone's business and income in this manner, especially in the face of such tragedy. If I contribute, I want it all to go to Sean's needs. thanks.
I heard a rumor on fb that there is a mail stop order effective mid October for all troops in Iraq. I have not heard that before from our son, and I have not been able to ask him if that is true. Anyone else heard this?
MK, my son is in Iraq and he said there will be a stop on mail today the 15th. I just sent out a package, I hope it gets to him. If it is mid Oct. that would be even better. I was waiting to send it out to him because his b-day is Oct. 2nd and I was getting him stuff for that but had to send a little sooner than that. He also said that they will be not able to call or anything on the internet. Now not sure how true this but if you hear something let me know as well. Hopefully they will be home sooner then.
No, I think that this young Marine was upset that the driver was not recognized for the same Medal. I heard he's very bitter toward the military, and that it took some persuasion for him to accept the Medal of Honor.I don't blame him. He felt he should share it with his peers, and good for him for doing that.

I am just overwhelmed reading the posts on my other group and how us Navy moms look after others and stick together. My children often say that there are no other moms like us Navy moms and I tend to feel they are right. Which by they way, I do not say that often. God bless everyone @->--
Thank you , Kelly. This is so very sad for this sailor. What pain.
One of my other groups is inquiring about elec blankets for Afghan. I know they use generators, how about battery operated ones, at least for warming the bed?
Cathy, always prayers for all of the loved ones of members of this board, and all those serving in harm's way and across the world. I guess it's stupid, but my prayer that is consistent, no matter what else I say on any one day, is that each of my moms/dads hear from their warrior, where ever they are that day, so they will sleep well that night, and then for them all to be brought home, safe and sound.
John, sometimes when my son was deployed, all I wanted was to climb in bed, turn on the tube and fall asleep and sleep the whole night, all the way until the sun was coming up. And I know all of you want the same, it helps so much, that rest....
Hi Ladies,Kinda of new here, but I knew you guys would have the answers for me.
Wheew ok here goes. My daughter clinic wants to start an outreach program for the kids over there. She asked me to find info on people and companies willing to donate school supplies, clothes just whatever might be needed. Where do I start with this? Now mind you I would so prefer her to stay inside camp and be as safe as possible, but that's not her!! If she sees a need to help anyone she is right in the thick of it! She sends my heart into palpations alot. She also said this will give me somthing to do other than sit by the phone waiting on her to call. So can you guys point me in the right direction?
Thanks, Carmeni....I know Molly's Adopt a Sailor is taking on new projects, larger ones...they are focusing on Afghan combat hospitals right now. Check with them, Molly has great ideas on this type of thing, and after all this time, she's pretty knowledgable about all issues concerning it.
I attended the funeral service for PO Brian Lundy yesterday morning with my friend Carolyn. Carolyn's son was a recruiter in WA when he committed suicide almost two years ago. I met her at a house concert, introduced her to many of my Navy moms on facebook, and as it turns out, Molly (from Molly's adopt a sailor) knew her son Travis, and many of the sailors he had worked with. Carolyn met Molly when she went to WA to see her grandchildren earlier this year. Truly a small world, isn't it? Molly was able to share so much with Carolyn, and really has become a huge support to her family.
Brian was known as Peanut to his family and friends..and as a tough military professional to the Navy and Marines. It was a beautiful service, full of music, love, faith, and testimony to the fine young Doc who died doing what he loved. Lots of sailors from around the country, the Admiral in command of all the corpsmen, and a Brig General whose son is a Marine in the 1/6 and served with Brian spoke about the service the Marines and Sailors held in Afghan for Brian...and how a unit of Seabees braved the roads and danger to get to those Marines and Sailors and support them in their loss of their Doc.
Judy, I think I can say with certainy that your son will not be allowed to return home for the birth of a child. I've never heard of that happening, and have seen many photos of dads viewing their babies for the first time by Skype.
My SIL did get to come home and missed the birth by one day.. He has been in the Navy for 18 years and is an officer.. Not sure how he did it but he is a very dedicated Doctor... His men were about ready to leave and there were some complications ... I seriously doubt this happens all that often..
TNM...I know we aren't supposed to send pork products...but there are small canned hams one can buy. (Maybe list it on the customs form as canned meat??? LOL) A lot depends on where your kids are...If they are on a large base they will probably be fed well. If they are at some outpost, they may not be able to prepare stuff... In that case, promise an extra special meal next year, and for now, send his or her favorite cookies, candy canes, etc. It is so different over there, it may be better to NOT try to make it like home. Remember, your kid isn't the only one...they tend to group together and make their own special holiday. A CD with Christmas carols....some tinsel garland to string all over the place and that sort of thing help set the mood. Believe me, our kids are some of the most inventive you can imagine. A bit of this and a bit of that is all they need to produce an instant party. (Maybe send a Santa hat???) I'm sure you will get many great ideas...
TNM...Check out The Dollar Store...they may have the headbands with the reindeer antlers. I think you have got the idea...You can't duplicate a "normal" Christmas, but you CAN help him make it one he will remember for the rest of his life. So what if it isn't "traditional"? They will have fun making new traditions.
What about a flat tree, made of felt or fabric, that can be hung on the wall, with battery operated lights? then, where ever they are, they can hang it someplace for everyone to share.
When my son was talking about deploying again he said he didn't want to go in the winter, and I misunderstood and said I could understand not wanting to deploy again, yada yada...and he said "mom! I like deployment, there's always something to do...it's the f%^&$# COLD I HATE!!! I'm a Texan!" He firmly believes that south western natives should deploy in the summer heat and northern natives should deploy in the winter...
It does get too cold...head warmers, boot warmers, battery operated warmers of any type and lots of batteries.
Did you order a banner from Build A sign? they do them for free for returning military...if anyone needs one that reads "Welcome home to our Texas Doc, we love you, Matt" you can borrow ours!!!!
Doc's Proud Mom!!! WHOOOWHHOOOO!!!! I love homecoming times!! congrats to all of your son's unit for a job well done and being boots down USA!!! Hug him for us all please!! tell him his Navy moms are proud and pleased to know he's safe and sound right here in the good ol USA!
Lori! I was thinking of you just last night, wondering...such good news!! thank you for keeping us up to date, and greetings to that kid of yours from the Navy moms....
Just got word that my brother made it to the sandbox.. I know I didnt post when he left dealing with the normal tears that big sisters have when baby brothers leave.. I know he will be in a safer area than most since he is an MD but I still worry about him.. I posted on my facebook our family routine when you hold up 3 fingers it means I-love-you, the other person holds up 4 fingers I-love-you-too so Saturday when my brother left for Afganistan me and my son's each took a picture holding up 3 fingers and txt'd it to him before he left I'm attaching the picture he sent me back... I checked the name on his uniform even though it shows part of it .. dont think its enough to cause an issue since its a pretty long last name Hope the picture isnt to big!!!
Hello Ladies! I'm just stopping by to say that every time I see someone has posted, I'm checking it out. (I don't want any scared new mom just sitting at her computer without any support!) I've been mostly lurking...my son has been home for almost a year, and just got out of the Navy, so I really don't belong here. However, I find that your kids have become one of mine, and I can't leave this group in the middle of the story. LOL I have a feeling that I won't be completely gone until ALL our kids are back from there. I'm loving all the pics, but especially the homecomings. What JOY!!!
Lori, your good news brought happy tears to my eyes. I remember when you first got the news he was injured and you came and told us. He has come such a long way since then, and he is still in my prayers...as are all our kids.
Debby...That is a beautiful picture of your brother! I only wish he was in the airport returning, instead of leaving.
Hang in there Moms...You are doing a terrific job!
Yep Sony came home with him but it is sad that when he transfers to Groton Sony will stay in Corpus and get a new handler. The handler will be feeding Sony for this month and then Ryan will get a new dog in Groton. Ryan said that is just how it works. That is sad to split them up.
Let me work on that...I bet some folks down there would love to have him for Thanksgiving dinner...or if he'd like to come to Austin! we'd love to host him for dinner!!!
Ah Texas Doc Mom you are so sweet! Ryan's wife Tasha my twin 1 year old grandsons and 2 year old toddler grandson are all with him but they are staying in an extended housing because he only has 45 days left there. That would be a housefull! They were all staying with her Mom in Georgia but she surprised him and drove all the way to Corpus then they drove back to Goergia where the boys were and then came straight down here and spent 10 days with me. Oh my gosh I miss them.
