My son graduated BC in April of 2012. He is an ET, stayed in GL for A School, went to C School in San Diego, and is forward-deployed. The ship he is attached to is a Whidbey Island-class landing ship, part of the Peleliu AmphibiousReady Group (ARG), Squadron 11.
A few other veteran moms will be joining to help answer questions, offer support, and give you lots of information.
There will also be lots of pages posted with information for you along the way. They will be posted as the subjects come up!
Remember there are no dumb questions, so ask away!
Fasten your seatbelts...the next few weeks will be a roller coaster ride, but at the end of the ride you are in for the best hug ever!!
My Sailor PIR’d in 05/2011. He is a Seabee Reservist. I have been an AF (Security Forces) Reservist wife for 28 years…I know …not Navy…but I am familiar with military life! We have been through two Deployments. Now working on Retirement process from AF and soon from Civilian job. Our son enlisted while Hubby was in Iraq. This site was a Godsend and helped me get through not only our sons BC experience but my husbands and my separation for 6 months.
I am a “veteran” mom and volunteer on the PIR groups mostly.
My Sailor Daughter's PIR was March 2013--can't believe how fast time has flown!. She is an IT3 (Information Systems Technician, Petty Officer Third Class). I primarily provide scriptural encouragement for the PIR groups, Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and a few of the other groups that I am a member of. I'll also help out with anything that I am familiar with--all kinds of tidbits I learned during my daughter's Boot Camp experience~~ This site really made the time go much faster. I'm so thankful that my Sailor daughter sent me the link for this awesome group of friends when she enlisted!! Count 9 Fridays and before you know it, you'll be seeing your baby again at PIR!! Here we go!!!
Hi! My son is assigned to Ship 11, Division 080. So thrilled to finally be able to write to him, and counting down the days to PIR on 1/30/15. Hope to meet some of you there. Have a great day.
My son is Ship 11 Division 80 also Brendan's mom. I am so happy to get the PIR date and the address! This is my second son to go through Great Lakes, it is less stressful the second time around!
Oh, momof4, I'm so excited to learn this. You're the first person I've connected with whose son is in the same Ship/Div. And I'm thrilled to know someone on the site who has gone through this before. This is all so new to me, and I feel like a lost lamb 90% of the time. This site has been a godsend.
Hi, I'm already confused! PIR 01/30/2015 TG 12 What does the TG 12 mean? My daughter is on ship 11 Div 079 and I am looking forward seeing her Jan 30th!
brendan'smom: We have all "been there!" So just look for support and help here on this site!
I too an a N4Moms veteran....my son was at Bootcamp in 2009. He has now been honorably discharged and is finishing up his Bachelors degree on the GI Bill. I have been helping on the PIR groups since early 2010 and love it!
Welcome to Navy Bootcamp! For the newcomers, please read the "pages' info, above and to the right on this page, for lots of info that ellen has posted!
Diannep, thanks so much for the encouragement. I so admire the women here whose children have already finished their service, but still stick around to help those of us who are navigating this adventure for the first time. My sincere thanks.
My thanks to your son for his service, and kudos to him for pursuing his degree. This is the same thing my son plans on doing. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Hi all. I've been here before when my son was in bc, now my daughter is there. I just got the letter today, yea!!! She's ship 11, div 079. My son left two years ago on Dec 10. He's had a deployment, stationed in CA and is a Petty Officer 2nd class. My baby girl is going into IT. While it is a bit easier this time I miss her like mad. I just know what to expect. I have my tears times, and proud moments. I look forward to getting to know you all, and some of you again. Blessings to all.
There is the possibility of you receiving a phone call from your SR (Seaman Recruit) during the first one to two weeks (sometimes later as well) after their arrival for Security Clearance info. I received mine one week after my son arrived at RTC. Had no idea it would come that fast. I'd only really been on the site for a week or two, so I had NOTHING ready! (My son asked for two more names along with their phone number and address. Sometimes you may be asked to fax the info but he was told to get it from me right then.).So... if your Recruit has a rating that requires security clearance information...800 Divisions, IT's, CTI's CTT's Nukes, AT's (the list goes on!), anyone that handles confidential info...have a list of references by the phone.
This is a short business call and is monitored. No time for chit chat...but once in a great while the person monitoring the call allows a few extra minutes.
The area code for GL is "847". My security clearance call, the caller ID said "US GOVERNMENT". We have also had "PAY PHONE" reported and then area codes for the surrounding areas...so answer all...and just get rid of those telemarketers!
Also, if you receive a call from your SR (at any time...not just the Security Call) and miss it...please do not call the number back. Your SR could get in trouble.
FTLW, if they need references for clearance, do you only need names and phone numbers, or addresses, as well? Can they be the same references that were used on the original entrance paperwork they filled out while in DEP, or do they need to be entirely new references? Thanks, again, for the help and advice!
I received a call from my daughter today to update her clearance references. She had 4 already, but two were teachers and they didn't want teachers as references. The call was monitored, but she was allowed a bit of chat time. She sounded good, but really tired. She has already made a few friends, and is happy with her decision.
Hey everyone, I want to give you a "HEADS UP" to be prepared to receive calls from your SRs this weekend! The call will show up as "847", "Waukegan, IL", "Pay Phone", or "Government" or anything else that may be unfamiliar. If it is a sales call, just politely tell them "No, thank you." Please also let your family members know about this too~~
During this time in Boot Camp, please keep your cell phones charged, ready, and with you all the time---upstairs, downstairs, out in the backyard, in the bathroom, out to get the mail, of course, out on errands. If you are going to a loud restaurant or a movie theater, remember to put it on "vibrate" and put in your pocket or some place you can feel it. They can call during the week or weekend, so just be prepared: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm (West Coast); 8:00 am - 8:00 pm (Great Lakes time); 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (East Coast).
For those planning to stay at Navy Lodge for graduation....if you have a sailor staying in GL for A School, please friend request/message me (put that in your "message" on the friend request). I need to pass on some info to you. This only applies to those with sailors staying in GL for A School, not those flying out for A School.
Thanks so much for the info, FTLW! So glad for the heads up. I'll pull that info together and keep it handy. I think it's unlikely I'll get the call, as he is A-PACT and I doubt he'll need additional clearance at this point, but it's good to be prepared, just in case.
Hi All, I'm new to this Navy Mom business! I'm trying to find my way on the site and I have a SR on ship 4 Div 805. Looking to all the other Moms for support and wisdom. Can't wait for 1/30/2015! I don't know who he put down for references, so will have to try to gather some I think he didn't use it sounds like, just in case I get a call. Have a great day!
brendan'smom - That is good. I don't think you will get a Security Call though...but keep that phone handy at all times anyways for other calls.:-)
Since your son is A-PACT he will be classified as a Undesignated Sailor. This simply means that he is not designated to train for an actual rating (occupational specialty). Undesignated Sailors do not attend an A School. Instead they go to a two to three week training that further prepares them for the fleet. After this they get some leave time before going to their Ship and/or duty station.
A PACT is Airman or aviation PACT which means he is Undesignated within the Aviation field. So usually his duties will lie within that area, doing whatever is required. Sometimes he will work outside of that field...needs of the Navy.
There are 3 different types of PACT (Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks): aviation (A-PACT), engineering (E-PACT), and surface (S-PACT).
S-PACT and E-PACT train at GL and A-PACT trains in Pensacola, FL.
Yes, since your son is in an 800 Divisions you may get a call. 800 Divisions are made up of Recruits that will be training for the SPECOPS (SPECial OPerations) after BC.
Security Clearance calls don't always happen...just as needed. :-)
Thanks, once again, for the info, FTLW. He qualified for several ratings, but they all would have required that he wait longer before shipping out to RTC. He decided to go A-PACT so that he could start asap, plus was excited at the prospect of being exposed to different areas of training and ok with having to wait before deciding on, and trying to qualify for, his designated rating.

Usually it is full name ,address and best phone number.
References are interviewed by the DoD. Department of Defense. Make sure the references are folks that would do well with an interview
