USS Tennessee! Its great to see a sub get this honor. My son is on the USS Miami. Just remember there are no women on subs. Also, the afgans or blankets need to be on the smaller side. Even though the Tennessee is a boomer they are still very short on space.

It looks like I am no longer unemployed. I was looking forward to just working on the house. But, the word has apparently gotten out that I wasn't working for my former employer. I started getting calls late last week. I'm now back to working for myself. I'll be doing alterations for a wedding and a prom dress. Don't worry though I still crotchet to relax.

The bunks on the subs are about 36" by 72". I don't know if that is any help but the blanket I sent my son was 48" by 60" and he said that was OK because it was a fleece blanket and he could tuck in the sides when he made up his bunk.

i'm happy I had some darker yarn

I buy my yarn at JoAnn Fabrics. They have 40% off coupons like Micheals. They also have sales on yarn and/or they have bins with special sales on certain colors. I signed up for the coupons in my name and my mothers name so I get double the coupons. That covers the yarn for the entire afgan.

    Just a remimder that the USS Tennessee is a Sub and there are no women on subs.........{~_~}
  • Anita B. (Josh's Mom)

Joyce...I'm interested too in a pattern that makes up quickly using the larger hook. The granny squares take so long. Thanks for the info.If you can post the actual pattern it would be great or my E-mail is abmcmann@yahoo.com
  • lauren

  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, could you send me the information on donations for shipping. You mentioned a bank but I don't remember what it said. Any other information on donating to the group would be greatly appreciated.
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, My husband works for Westinghouse Nuclear here in Pittsburgh. They have a community out reach program. I spoke to their co-ordinator this morning and they would like you to submit a formal proposal for funding to help with shipping costs. I can't do anything because I don't have the standing or the information to submit to them. Contact me and I'll let you know what you need to do, if you are interested.
  • lauren

maybe wrappiing them in tissue paper? I wonder about security, if they would perfer not to have them wrapped because of them being in bulk? Let me know what you decided if you want them wrapped I'll wrap the ones I have to ship out to you ....
  • lauren

  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, Remember that you will be able to get e-mails from him while he is gone. Encourage him to tell you about the places he visits and you can keep him up on whats happening on the home front. Try sending short messages everyday instead of long ones once in a while. And don't wait for him to e-mail you first, guys are so bad at sending the first message. Good luck and hang in there. Mine is on a sub and his departures and home comings are classified. I never know when he's leaving or coming back.
  • lauren

    Good morning evr1
Ok Joyce and Terri my heart is with you I say forget the pitty party and bring on the wine........because that is what our sailors are thinking............lol.......I think being on a ship they still can use their personal emails can't they???? I really don't know about ship life. But my son uses his personal email when they are not under the water.
So I say if you like writing long emails then please send then as far as pictures and stuff we use facebook and myspace then (you can be private if you want) and you don't have to worry about storing pics on your pc or jump drive. and if you want a copy of the pic you can copy from the site. Just some thought from me
I sure wish I could knit
but I must say that after watching the youtube that other night I have enough granny squares made to sew a blanket together ...WOOHOO...
now Terri if I can get some boxes I have about 10 blankets to send you i still have quilts to send.................oh my I think I might have to find a job to ship all this..............lol
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I don't know about surface ships. On the subs they get text only and he can't access anything off the sub while they are underway. Its that "run silent, run deep" thing. I do know the surface guys can have access to the internet but I don't know about anything else. I once asked Alex "how come the surface guys get to use the internet and not you". He gave me that look only a son can give you and said " its kind of hard to hide a carrier, but we aren't suppose to be seen or heard." Smart kid! LOL
  • lauren

ok I have a question I'm going to some of the different sites to order yarn ........and I have no idea what kind I'm looking for ....they don't have a tab for "plain old afghan yarn"..............can you help me out here?
  • LLovesmysailor

I buy worsted weight. It goes faster and you can find worsted weight that is really soft. Baby yarn is kind of fine and tougher to wash.
  • lauren

ok I went to JoAnns and they have their 1#'s for $5.49 and over $25.00 it is free shipping..............
  • lauren

Hey Terri when are you planning on shipping blankets for the USS Tennessee
  • jean

    Hi
does the Navy have a pattern to Knit ? or does any one else made a pattern of the Navy Logo etc?

    Jean
  • LLovesmysailor

I like the "ship of the quarter" thing.
  • lauren

don't worry about it i think i posted a couple of them before i sent them .............so let me make sure I have this right .....we are going to do blankets for the Mason till the end of March Then start on the USS Tennessee.....just need to know if I should be working on any for girls
  • lauren

I just have to share with my knitting moms..............I received a text from my son tell me there is a chance he will be pick from his sub to go to Iraq for 6 months after training for 2 ( needless to say I told him that is not something he should TEXT to his mom...lol) then he called me right away and explained that because of security ranking......not to high and not to low..............that there is a chance......I do not know how I feel about this..........but do know that if he goes I will be making blankets like crazy.............
  • LLovesmysailor

Let us know how it goes. We are here for you.
  • lauren

that looks cool ...i bet a bunch of these talented moms would love to use it ...( not me i can't read a pattern...lol) how about it you put with the patterns discussions so they don't have to flip threw the pages to find it
  • lauren

Hey Gayle no big deal ....you can post patterns here too , but if you use the discussion then they don't get lost in the shuffle....I bet you do some beautiful work
  • lauren

Oh my how cute............she could be on a cover of a magazine
  • lauren

still as cute today.............it is amazing how much we can remember..........and all the little things .that just make us chuckle
  • LLovesmysailor

Gayle, Tell her that she can grow it long when she gets out of BC. In fact, they don't cut it all that short at basic. Not like my son, who looked bald when we first saw him after graduation.
  • LLovesmysailor

Let me start by saying that I am a serious cat person. That being said, those are the cutest dogs I've ever seen. If I ever wanted a dog I would love Corgis. I'm just too lazy to own a dog. Cats are the lazy persons perfect pet. Short of pet rocks. I can't believe I'm old enough to remember those.
  • LLovesmysailor

My oldest son is on permanent shore duty, so he came home and took his cat back to Virginia Beach. They really missed each other. Fortunately his girlfriend is a cat person.
  • LLovesmysailor

I'm starting another afgan tonight. We are still trying to sell our house, so my sewingroom is in storage. Don't know what I'd do if I didn't have something to crotchet or knit. I'm definitely suffering from sewing machine withdrawal.
  • lauren
