I wrote a letter to my son and put it in his Bible. In it I told him what I would be praying for every day...
Safety and Health; Mental Strength, Physical Strength, for the powers to be to see his desire, his drive and his leadership and to allow him to excel, and more than anything I pray for him to feel the love from home!!!
Now he know exactly what I'm praying for him every day..
That's so awesome Jewelz & Shelley it's such a good feeling too know how many of us are praying for all our SR! And it seems like we're all praying for the same things!
Shelley, that was a great idea! Before my SR left to get on the plane, I took his little Bible and highlighted some key verses for him that I felt would be uplifting and remind him of where his true strength comes from. He wrote home and said he was so glad that I did that. Made me smile and brought happy tears! :)
It is a good morning! I just got my call from my SR! I screamed in her ear, poor thing. Well she really needed pep talk and a little tough love. She is really doubting herself. I gave her what she needed to hear not what she wanted to hear. She is going to be OK (I pray) she is sick right now and everyone wants to be babied by mama when they are sick.
I just got a letter from my husband saying he has been told that he will most likely fly out the afternoon of graduation day. How can he know this much in advance?! I'm traveling with our two year old and the thought of doing all of this to only see him for a few hours is so discouraging and completely makes me rethink our plans and reservations made. My son and I are scheduled to leave Saturday night. I did that in hopes of getting the most amount of time with him possible but am now doubting if that was the right choice. Any thoughts or suggestions?! Is this what they tell all the guys to just prepare them for that? He will be going to Pensacola. Any advice or thoughts are greatly appreciated. One very down and discouraged wife over here :(
Not true, HooyahWife, although I have no doubt sometimes they are told this. He most likely will be bussed with the others later that night, usually in the wee hours of Sat. morning.....to wait for flights. We have never heard of sailors flying out the afternoon of PIR Day. Here is what the Family FAQs on the RTC site says:
Recruits staying in Great Lakes for their A School will check into their new command immediately after graduation. That check-in process can take up to five hours. You may wait at the Mainside Visitors center. The Great Lakes A Schools are NOT located onboard Recruit Training Command. Your recruit will be able to contact you when they have completed the check-in process. They will receive guidance regarding their exact liberty hours upon checking into their A school.
If your recruit will be attending A School out of state, they will fly out the day following graduation. There may be a delay if there is a flight availability issue but only your recruits is permitted to give you their exact flight/departure information. Their graduation daytime liberty hours will be determined by their Recruit Division Commander (RDC) prior to commencing liberty. Please ensure your recruit returns to RTC with adequate time for their arrival to the barracks prior to expiration of liberty.
Not sure at all why the SRs are told that info which is completely incorrect!! What diannep advised is what actually happens~ My own Sailor daughter flew to Pensacola on Saturday morning at 11:00 am! Leave your plans as booked. I flew back home on Saturday evening too. Here's the link to your next active Sailors in Pensacola, FL for A School~~
Diannep and catmom509, thank you for the info! I cannot tell you how upset I was last night. I will stick with my original plans then :) Thanks again for all the help.
I will add that occasionally some of the SRs do not fly out until Sunday. No headsup on this....it is what flights they can find for the sailors once they complete BattleStations. It is after that when they will receive their Orders which include their flight info.
Won't be Friday, so you are good! You most likely will not know when your sailor is flying out until PIR, unless you get a call right before PIR and find out then. Be sure to ask your sailor after PIR which airport he/she is leaving from, airlines/times/destination, etc. Some people mail their SRs an index card now to complete with all of this info, and they hand it to you after PIR
Please note I am not trying to divert anyone from this site to another. As you can clearly see I belong to all. Thought i should make that clear. The FB page is PIR 09/11/15 NAVY BOOT CAMP. Some divisions have also created their separate pages, which I do not think have administrators who know their stuff. They have been created by parents or spouses wanting to form a deeper bond.
Also there is a FB: 1.So Cal Navy Moms. 2. A private one called Navy Mom & PIR Friends on this one you have to friend them and wait for them to add you, lots of helpful info.
I am a “veteran” mom. When I am on here my focus is mainly the PIR Groups and Boot Camp Mom's.
You can call me FTLW, it's easier :-)
My Sailor PIR’d in 05/2011. He is a Seabee Reservist. I am an AF (Security Forces) Reservist wife (29 years - now retired). I know …not Navy…but I am familiar with military life! We have been through two Deployments. Our son enlisted while Hubby was on his 2nd Deployment.. This site was a Godsend and helped me get through not only our sons BC experience but my husbands Deployment.
Hi everyone and good morning. I am Lora and I have been a member of this site since early 2010 before my daughter left for boot camp. She did four years and is now a veteran. She decided not to reenlist because she had a baby and her husband (at the time, now separated) is also a Sailor. She is now using her GI Bill to go to school to become a physical therapist and she wants to work with wounded warriors. I have had a lot of family things going on including loosing both of my parents and it has taken me a while to get to the point that I feel like I can finally get active in these groups once again. I am happy to be here and happy to offer support to all of you. Feel free to send me a friend request on here if you like and on facebook as well. I am also an admin in the original facebook PIR groups and I know many of you are active here and on our facebook group. You are getting closer and I know you are excited to see your soon to be Sailors <3
I guess I should tell you a little more about me :) My daughter had PIR July 23, 2010. She was an AO with the VFA-37 Ragin' Bulls on the Harry S Truman based at Oceana. Then she was with a Helicopter squadron the Fleet Angels based in Norfolk. She is now a veteran. I also have 2 sons, 2 stepdaughters, a wonderful supportive husband and 2 absolutely beautiful granddaughters who are the joy in my life. We are from the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC. I have a small Navy Mom business where I make all kinds of goodies for Navy Families, I love crafting, and I host Navy Mom Meet and Greets in all the areas we travel to. There will be one soon on Lake Keowee in SC, one in the fall in Asheville NC, and one sometime this fall near Clearwater FL and possibly in VA Beach area this fall as well. If you have any questions about my business, or the meet and greets coming up please send me a friend request. I love being an admin in the facebook groups and helping in this group as well. I remember very well what you all are going through and I am happy to help in any way I can. PIR is amazing and you are going to love it. Make sure you go to Sarge's meet and greet if at all possible the night before PIR; it is lots of fun! Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your group :)
Thanks for all your help ladies, I have another question, Ive read that family members have shirts made for the meet and greet. What do we put on them? Division, PIR date, his name, pictures?
jayzmom: Some groups do make shirts....it is up to you what you want to put on them, but most would put their division numbers so they can find each other at the MeetandGreet. Others just wear ribbons that they make or order from Lala (post below here)....that identify the divison number also.
I flew into O'Hare on Delta Airlines at 3:30 pm, rented a car there with an IPASS ($6.95 each day) and breezed all the way north up the toll roads 35 minutes to Holiday Inn Express in Waukegan. That was easy for me.
Milwaukee is supposed to be an easy route coming in from the northeast about 40 minutes. Not sure if any toll roads are on that route. Southwest flies there and to Midway (super busy and a solid 1 hour plus to Great Lakes.)
amanda: Either OHare or Milwaukee....time is about the same....depending on traffic in Chicago. If you are looking for no traffic, try Milwaukee. Southwest Airlines charges no change fee so if your SR is delayed for any reason, no problem changing your reservation. 2 bags check for free and Southwest includes a discount rental car code for you as well. So I would check on Southwest into Milwaukee. If your SR is flying out, remember they use the Chicago airports and you can meet them there, so if you fly into Milwaukee, make sure your return is either late on Sat. night or better yet, on Sunday....so you miss no time with your SR.
Thanks! I think Milwaukee sounds like the solid choice!! I prefer Southwest over American Airlines!! Now, I'm just hoping there's still hotel rooms available! (fingers crossed!)
amanda: Southwest also flies into Chicago-Midway, but it is a further drive to GL from there with the traffic (usually an hour minimum, longer in most cases because of traffic)....however, some who plan to meet their sailors at the Chicago airports and plan to fly out later that day themselves want to fly from Chicago since it is more convenient....so keep that in mind!
MrsG if I hadn't seen you do it I would have asked the same thing because most of the people my SR mentions are people whose family members I haven't connected with.
Quick question! I was on the phone with my husband yesterday and he mentioned he may be able to have a waiver to stay with me overnight during PIR weekend because he was married. I have NEVER heard of this and thought they were to report back to base. But he mentioned it in a letter he sent too. Are they just pulling his leg or is there truth to this?
