I am way late to the party, just found the site yesterday. My son is in BC. We are waiting for the "I'm a Sailor" call, so excited. We head out Thursday for PIR. Only problem is that we moved 2 times this summer, once for selling a house then once from a temporary house into our new permanent house. So, as our poor SR was trying to write our address, he put the street address of one home and the city, state, zip of the other. So, we never received our letter (with the parking pw) or his box of belongings. YIKES I've been reading through your comments and your excitement is infectious. Just happy to be here. Leigh
Leigh, if they haven't already one of the admins from the group might be able to help. Also, if you haven't joined the FB group for this PIR they have some great admins over there as well.
We have tried to get the official letter rerouted (called local recruiter) but no luck, we don't get return calls. We received one from our son. Thank you for the suggestion of the FB Group - is there a link for that? I just found Sarges - I think we will do that, it looks like a lot of fun! :)
Leigh, Ask your son for the password when you get your "Sailor call". If he doesn't remember it, he can ask someone else in his division that is standing near.
You can call or email the PAO office about his box of belongings, they can tell you where, or who to call. It is probably sitting there with several others that never made it "home".
Thank you so much! I called them and they sent me over to the shipping center - they have tons of boxes that never made it home. They are trying to locate his now. I also RSVP'd for the Meet and Greet... :-)
CONGRATULATIONS to all the new Sailors and their families!! Safe travels to all to an awesome PIR!!
Remember, PIR is just the beginning of the Navy journey. Keep plugged into Navy for Moms where there are groups for A school, C school, ratings (jobs), bases, ships, states, regional, twins and multiples, and the "Christian Navy Moms" that I am a part of!
Also, the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command page on Facebook puts up photos from each PIR. If you see your Sailor in a pic or more, you can download it to your own computer by either clicking on the picture, going down to Options and downloading it OR right click, "Save Picture As" to a file on your computer~~
Are cold! I brought a shawl to either sit on or wrap myself in.
Don't set anything down on the bench that is thin like a camera, cell phone, keys, etc. The floors of the bleachers are solid except underneath the seats there are openings just wide enough and about a foot (?) long for modern day devices to fall through...it is like a black hole...you won't get it back.
PHOTOS:
Take a few practice shots before the ceremony. They can come out dark. I think it's all the grey paint LOL.
You may start photography when you enter the Visitors enter (USS YORKTOWN) and in Midway Ceremonial Drill hall...only.Photography is not allowed anywhere else onboard RTC. You risk having your camera confiscated and the pictures deleted. Also, your Sailor could get in trouble. They are your sponsor while you are onboard RTC.
SMOKING is also not permitted onboard RTC.
SNACKS
There are concession stands at either end of the PIR hall that sell soft drinks COFFEE water and some snacks. You may bring some snacks into the Hall with you if needed for yourself, little ones and those that may need it for medical reason. They used to sell "Dixie cup" (Mens style)Sailor hats for the kiddies for $5. I hope they still do.
POSTERS, BALLOONS, FLOWERS and LUGGAGE
Are not permitted in the Drill hall. Posters obstruct others view. Plus, this is a Formal ceremony and they do not suit the event. You may keep these items in your car and present them to your Sailor following PIR but remember that they may not bring those items back onboard RTC when they return from Liberty.
WHEELCHAIRS
Use of wheelchairs and manually-powered mobility aids are authorized onboard RTC. Wheelchair accommodations are provided on the Drill deck and a companion seat is made available for someone to sit with them. RTC does have wheel chairs on a first-come first-serve basis. Also, if you need handicapped parking be sure to show your placard to Security in the Gate Shack and they will direct you to handicapped parking.
Being sick made me slow and stupid last week. Am just catching up on the ribbons for PIR. They look awesome but I'm behind the curve and thinking I may make my own. Can someone give me the ribbon width and length of theirs?
Just recieved an unexpected call from my son-32 min call. He is super excited to see us Friday as we are to see him!! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas! 2 more days!! : )
I would say the width of the ribbon should be 3/4". Length could be whatever you feel comfortable with after bending it into the graceful oval at top and two tails at the bottom, maybe about 8" - 10"?
Safe travel today! Enjoy the MeetandGreet tonight....be early to PIR tomorrow!
Driving hint for PIR:
Stay to the left on Buckley.....car line for RTC on your right. Bypass RTC and turn around at the train station right past it. Head back to RTC from opposite direction....easy left turn onto base, no wait!
Renee: Some people make or buy ribbons with their sailor's name/division number on it to wear to PIR and the MeetandGreet to honor their new sailors and so others in the same division can spot you.
Happy PIR Day! I hope that many of you are in PIR Hall right now! Enjoy this very special day! I will post the link to the Livestream in a minute for those of you who want to send it to family members this morning so they can be a part of your new sailor's special day!
Wow! What a fantabulous day it was! I got to keep my sailor until 7pm. I'll meet him at the airport tomorrow morning to see him off one last time. This has been an INCREDIBLE experience!!!!!!
Sorry I wasn't on yesterday! I hope PIR was great for you and that you had a Blessed time with your new Sailors!
I was busy all day and then went to serve at our Church's Harvest Festival. Hubby and I went as Batman and Wyldstyle from the LEGO Movie. Haven't dressed up in years! It was a lot of fun!
