Years ago, there used to be a Family Day the day before PIR. The sailors were allowed to be there with the families, but that was discontinued. Now, the MeetandGreet is a substitute (but not Navy-sponsored)....and there will be no sailors there. No one will see their sailors before PIR Day.
Actually, in divorce situations, I was told by someone at RTC that a SR can request a 2nd form letter for the other parent, but most won't as they don't want to draw attention to themselves.
thank you for your help,, unfortunatly my ex and i havent been on the best of speaking terms over the years but I can put my son above him any day of the week. I know this is a time for my baby not his father!! My sons recruiter has been very helpful as far as giving me PIR date and his address ( which was something that I actually had before his father!) I am aware taht his father and I will need to be spending time with him together but it isn't in my priority to stay at same hotel/ nor share a car if you get my drift. I am familiar with the Great Lakes area so im using this time to go see friends and family after PIR as well. I do know that my son put me on the list. he knows i would hunt him down anyway. My son and I are on good terms its only his father.. Sorry i have rambled on .. going to take a trip to the mailbox.. I was hoping for at least a letter from the kid!
Lisa.... Im jealous.. the last contact i had from himn was a text that said he landed in chicago. told him I loved and him and he said love you to mom... I will never delete that message! I agree to hear his voice would be so much more reassuring.. going from daily talking to nothing is not right!!
Carla, it was a huge relief to just hear that she's okay and everything is going okay. Maybe on Saturday your son will call you because my daughter said they will get to make a call sometime on Saturday.
So do we know how many divisions we have yet? From looking at the PIR date before us, it ends on 368. My son is in 369, so he looks to be in the 1st division.
mimi, I'm so glad you got your letter! And it's great to know of someone else's SR that's in my son's ship 14 and div 375! I kept watching for our mail carrier today, hoping to receive our form letter, but no luck. Maybe tomorrow.
Please check out the hotels you are interested in on www.TripAdvisor.com....for reviews. Most will be from Navy families. Don't want anyone to have surprises!
I have some questions diannep, do we have to wait for our SR to let us know when they fly out for A school or is there a way to find out in advance? Another question is what is Liberty for them like on the weekend of PIR? Thanks in advance.
SMW: If they fly out, it most likely will be he next day, bussed late PIR night. If you can stay until Sunday, try to as sometimes they don't fly out until Sunday. But mostly on Sat. You can visit with them at the airport, but they can leave as early as 6 a.m. so you would need to be there in the wee hrs. Some won't leave that early. They will have their flight info right before PIR.
Liberty is from after PIR until about 8-9 pm that night.
Those with sailors staying in GL for A School will move over there right after PIR is over....they will call you later in the afternoon to pick them up. They then have daytime Liberty through the weekend, returning to base each night.
Counting down the days until the 11/6 PIR! Reservations made at the Navy Lodge! Where do I sign up for the Sarge's Meet and Greet?
Thanks to everyone for your input on this site. I don't post often, but I try to read daily. It is truly a great wealth of information and helps make this process so much easier.
I officially started counting down the Fridays until PIR. Technically, not counting 11/6, there are only 6 Fridays between us and the most wonderful hug in the world! 6 Fridays doesn't sound nearly as bad as 7, 8 or 9 weeks !
Hopefully their 1st chance to write home was this past Sunday so I wouldn't be surprised if some of start seeing mail this week (Wed, Thurs or Fri). This weekend is their 3rd weekend there also, so who knows? Maybe a surprise phone call for some :)
diannep, my son will be staying in GL for A school, before he left he said it was for 10 weeks, I was wondering since he will be there thru the holidays, will he get a chance to come home or just off for lets say thanksgiving and Christmas? If he can't come home, Can we go there to at least have Christmas dinner? Also what kinds of personal items can they have in A school?
Tierney'smom: Yes, the GL A School sailors can return from Liberty to A School base with their personal belongings. They move over there shortly after PIR is over as a group. They will know how much they can take depending on their storage space.
TheRocksmom: Yes, they go on Stand Down during the Christmas holidays and they can put in for Leave to come home for a few days usually. They have to request this and it most be approved, of course.
As far as going there for Thanksgiving....your sailor will have to phase up to leave the base....so you will have to wait and see how long that will take....2-3 weeks usually....you will know more once your sailor reports to A School base and goes through INDOC.
For the ones that have to move after pir into their new barracks be prepared to sit and wait. My son said they he would be ready at 3:30, but it was more like sometime after 5. So you will have plenty of time to check out the museum there. All 4-5 rooms!
This time will be different. This flys out to Pensacola.
But it was fun listening to them all sing their cadence while marching.
They can have most personal items once at A School....phone, laptop, civilian clothes (they must phase up before they can wear them). You can take some of these items up for PIR for your sailors (trade at the airport for those flying out)....and ship the rest once they are there. They need to see their storage area to see what will fit.
TheRocksMom: My son's A School was also short...he didn't want alot of "stuff" there because of that. He figured he would get what he wanted when he came home on Leave after A School before reporting to duty station. So I would ask your SR what items to bring to PIR and let him pick/choose what he wants....
I read that this week is wisdom teeth removal week, they will get a 2 day recovery. When my son told me the dentist told him that (he went about a 2 months before swearing in) I said have the dentist remove them then..my sons reply was why? it's free in the navy...I don't think he knew about the 2 day recovery.
Will we find out if they had their wisdom teeth out? I've heard 2 different things. One is they take then no matter what and the other is they only take them if they are impacted.
bpickship: They do not remove everyone's wisdom teeth. Some will be taken, others may be watched for a while. Others may be told they are fine. They will take any that they feel could be a problem when deployed. It is a very common procedure at Bootcamp and they get a couple of days in SIQ (sick in quarters).
N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC apply to the Discussion Forum area as well. The Division Discussions are viewable to all...just like the Main Wall here.
Please do not start new division discussions!!!!
The Discussion Forum area is set to show titles only and is set at ten titles at a time for now. (This can be adjusted by the group creator or an administrator)
It is also set to show the "latest activity" (there are other settings). So whatever has just had a reply added to it will "bump" that Discussion to the top. The discussion will stay up there at the top because it has had "activity"…until the next Discussion has activity. If there are over ten discussions, whatever is at the bottom will disappear from view…but not from the Discussion Forum. So, if you want to see more, click "view all" at the bottom right hand corner of the discussion forum area. It is right up there above the Blue Comment Wall bar.
When you view a discussion forum by clicking on the title, the first post ever made will be the first one on the first page. To get to the most current reply, click “Last Reply” directly underneath that particular Discussion.
~You will also notice that in the top right corner in any post that you do you will see an "x". This is so you may delete your post if you need too. You will also see the “x” on any post you make anywhere else on the site.
Your Division Discussions have been posted up above. Please use them to get to know each other even better on a "Divisional" basis...BUT remember that you all have the same PIR date and many of you will be attending the same Meet and Greets...so please continue to post on the Main Wall here.
Also, please continue to post your questions for us "veteran moms" on the Main Wall here. We can have 7-8 active PIR groups going at one time..that's 70-90 Divisions! We try to get to the Division Discussions but with that many it is difficult! We don't want to miss any questions as ALL are important...no dumb ones...for many of you this is your first servicemember and we want to be there to help and lend support.
Those 2 days in SIQ resting after wisdom teeth removal are blissful days of rest for the SRs, who have been go, go, go up to then! Those days are factored into their total training time, so none fall behind. And yep, having those removed for free in the Navy is no money out of his pocket -- usually anesthesia is not covered by regular dental insurance!
I know that you don't necessarily want to be in the same hotel as your ex, but to make it easier for your SR to go between your room and the other room, maybe that would be something to consider?
Will your SR be attending A school in Great Lakes? That would make a difference if he had the whole weekend there instead of just Friday, then meet him at the airport on Saturday~~
