Have to agree with CatMom, Carla. Since PIR will be all about your SR, it would be easier to have you and your ex at the same hotel....unless he is flying out for A School (therefore only having PIR Day with you)....and you and your ex are splitting up the day half with you and half with him. But if he is a GL A School student meaning daytime weekend Liberty, I think the same hotel would make it easier.
diannep, thanks for the information, I really do not know what I would be doing if it was not for this site. Going nuts for sure...I will ask son in letter when we get closer to PIR what to bring. What does "phase up" mean?
I really appreciate all of the info and the time that is spent helping the new moms. I've learned so many things that had never occurred to me before. This site really is an answer to prayers. I don't always post, but I read every day. Thank you so much for everything that the veteran moms do. Before my son left, he said that he would be in GL for 92 weeks after graduation...is that correct? He's AECF.
Thank you for all the info. Indeed it is very helpful and I'm getting an idea what my son is doing at this time and the next week or so.
My son is in Ship 12 Div 372. Going to school in Pensocola.I have been reading some posts but have not seen one that he is with.
I'm also hanging in there and busy writing cards or letters to him since his birthday is coming up. I don't want to be late for his card. He said that he needs a phone card since he used it already when he called me last week for a business call.
When he called last week thank goodness I answered right away and he was very surprised that I knew it was him. So I carry my phone everywhere.
I just got a call too, he sounds great too!, Moms keep your phones with you! So true Samsmom you never know.. proud mom of tom, yes I believe on or next too, this is why I choose it, if you make reservation there, you give them your son's name, but reservation will be in yours. other than that not sure about what other benefits, just wanted to be as close as possiable to him,, Does anyone know more infor about Navy Lodge?
I mentioned to my son who all was going to GL when he graduates. There will be seven of us but only four to graduation, he asked if I spoke with his recruiter about this??? It's okay if more family members come to see him since he will be on liberty for the weekend, correct?
The Navy Lodge is not on base, although it is located in the Navy family housing. Great place to stay if you can!
Since the hotel is for DoD employees you do have to give your recruits name to them, s/he is your "sponsor". They may ask you at some point to bring your Sailor to the front desk for confirmation.
Call that hotel directly, do not use the 800 number or try and book online. They do book up quickly, but they also have cancellations quite regularly, and if you keep calling (don't be a pest) once a week or so you may find rooms have become available.
Hey Nen's mom - my daughter is also in ship 12, div 372! No call yet. She doesn't have a calling card but I've heard she will call from an Waukegan IL # so keeping my phone close by. No letters yet. Waiting anxiously. Navy Lodge booked and flights booked! :)
I got my call this morning too! So good to actually talk this time. And I could hear in the back round others talking to their loved ones!!! So shocked as I was not expecting this so soon. The older one was in a push division and was busy all the time. He did tell me mailed me a letter and wanted to know if I got it yet.
I got a call from my son about an hour ago also! Woo hoo! He's Div 369. He sounded really good... Today they are on Day 1-5. Tomorrow is their 1st inspection, & Monday is their 1st test! They had their 1st PT already. There's a lot of yelling, but it's not constant. Most of what they've been doing so far is marching, folding clothes, making their bed, cleaning, standing at attention with their mouth shut, and standing watch (up until bedtime the shifts are 4 hrs, thru the night shifts are 2 hrs). It was awesome to hear his voice again & ask a few questions. Oh, and he wrote a letter Sunday & mailed it out; I'm hoping to get it soon! He said they are SO busy he won't really have time to write to most most people, as Sunday he will have church, has to clean, and has to study for the test Monday. He is REALLY looking forward to receiving his first letter on Sunday (good thing we have mailed a bunch already!)
Also, he told me last names of a few guys he is friends with there. If you have a son who flew out of San Diego 9/9 and whose last name starts with D (& is going to Pensacola for A school), starts with C (& is going to Pensacola for A School), or starts with L (& is not going to Pensacola for A School); or a son from Brooklyn whose last name starts with M (& is going to Pensacola for A School & A CTN), or whose first name starts with a W (he had to go, so I don't know any more except this is his bunkmate); could you please PRIVATE MESSAGE ME? I just want to touch base with someone whose son is actually friends with my son!
MOMTORQR: You can have as many as you like come up for PIR but like you said, just the 4 at actual PIR. The others can watch the Livestream at the hotel and meet up with you after PIR is over. Then....celebrate!
Also, for those who find Navy Lodge is booked, keep calling back (call, don't check online). They DO get cancellations!
TheRocksmom: Phase up means that they earn progressive privileges from their accomplishments when at A School. They will be told about the specifics of this during INDOC once they arrive at their A School.
mimi~I agree! I happened to be home when he called, but now I am DEFINITELY carrying a small pad of paper in my purse with a pen! I was feverishly writing down everything he said so I could tell the rest of the family! And report some on here too :)
I got a call from another recruit for my foster son. He said my boy had some teeth pulled, is really sick now but wanted to tell me he loves me, and to send his letters priority mail. I thanked him for calling me, told him to tell my boy I love him, am sorry he is sick and am so proud of him
Moo, You can send your mail to your recruit however you want, but sending it priority really doesn't get it there any faster, it just costs more money. It only takes two or three days from just about anywhere in the country to get to the RTC, and the "delay" in your recruit receiving his mail starts at the RTC.
Mail is sorted at the USPS facility, delivered to each ship, and then sorted down from there to divisions, then recruits. Even then it only takes a couple days at the most, unless the recruits handling the mail at the ship are not getting it all sorted each day. It will get better as time goes on. :)
The highlight for my day was that I got another business call from my son today. 40 minutes total
My husband and his two brothers got to speak with him. He sounded better and he said that they yell and scream at us but they do look out for our well being. That just made my day. They have inspections tomorrow and he ask for a phone card
He also said I will call you this week since this is not my scheduled call. I'm soooo happy and Just wanted to share this piece of info so all parents can have a little of peace mind.
Moo, No apology necessary. That isn't the first time we have heard that. :) Don't pay the extra postage, and besides the extra postage, it also makes your recruits mail "stand out" from the rest. The less attention drawn to your recruit the better. :)
So I have a question.... I talk to my daughter the other day on the phone and she wants me to send her shampoo and conditioner. I asked her if it was okay for her to receive it and she said it was. Does anyone know if it's OK to send it?
Has anyone heard that the family and friends that are not on the list for PIR can watch the ceremony in the Chapel next to the hall? My daughter mentioned it in her letter but I can't find anywhere to confirm this. I was just going to have them stay at the Navy Lodge to watch via the live stream.
juju: True. But all need to know that they are escorted into the Chapel--they cannot walk there by themselves....they must stay in the Chapel during the entire ceremony, even if the Livestream has a glitch and doesn't work (happens sometimes), there is no food/drink allowed in there (it is allowed in PIR Hall), and children under 18 must have an adult with them. They will also be escorted out of the Chapel and back to the Visitors Center to meet up with family members after PIR. No one should think that they have "a chance" for getting into PIR Hall. That will not happen! RTC asks that extras stay off base and watch the Livestream at their hotels (it is shown in public areas in many hotels) but for those who show up, they will try to accommodate them in the Chapel.
Lisa; Hmmm.....interesting since she can purchase that in the NEX with her supply card. If she said to send it, said it was ok, hopefully she checked that out with her RDCs....so you could send it. Just label the outside as to what it is so there are no surprises.
Just got 2 letters from my daughter who is in ship 12, division 372! She sounds great! She says that her division is a push division so they will be graduating one week earlier than anticipated. I've already booked our flights and hotel for the Nov. 6th PIR. Will their ceremony still be the same day even though their a push division?
Jessiesmom... My daughter told me she was in a PDF division also, but that her PIR was still 11/6. She said they just mostly sat around for the first week and didn't actually start boot camp yet.
PUSH divisions are created when those recruits sit in p hold for longer than "normal". There can be a number of reasons that this happens, but what seems to be the usual problem is waiting on enough females to arrive and complete an integrated division (yes, something that is their fault. haha)No worries they will still get it all done in the time allotted, and have PIR on the expected day.
For those of you with recruits in a PUSH division, your recruits might not notice anything other than more stuff to do in less time, but you on the outside watching may be very confused. LOL
Don't count on following the day by day schedule for your recruits, it just isn't happening. What your recruits do on week 3 day 2, might be what other divisions do on week 3 day 4.
Count the training days the same, ask your recruit what they have done that week, but don't worry if it isn't the same as the other divisions. It will only confuse you and give you stress that is not needed. :)
Mu son was put in a TG the week before expected, was in p hold for sixteen (calendar) days, while waiting for 60 (yes 60) females to arrive. His division and brother division cruised right along, and all was well!
Got a letter from my son and he is hilarious. He said it's awful but will be worth it. He looks like a thumb and can not tell anyone apart, said his RDC was very inspirational.
Got a letter today and my daughter said "bootcamp is great. Nothing at all like it was made out to be." She went to the pool Friday. Part of the test included jumping off a tower. She said it wasn't so bad cause she couldn't see the drop without her glasses. She also said she was picked as a "yeomen"?
