Cool. Air Force is good Connie, I shall share it with my father.
Hi Carol, Marilyn and Paige. There you are!!!! Hey, girls!
BTW, is this the book? You said history of the navy. This is just a history of the GL Naval Training Station. I could not put the book down until I read it all! Yes I had a brother and 2 cousins in the Navy, but my Uncle was in the Navy and another Uncle (army) died over in the Phillipines when they invaded. So my Uncle would have joined somewhere in the early or mid 40's.
OK Connie, there's gonna be a test. Tell me what those 3 airplanes are - (and I'll have to go ask my dad, LOL!) I'd love to know the carrier too, maybe my brother knows, I'll ask him.
Paige, that was a great link! The simpler the better.
Connie, you know better than to ask me that. I just ride along.
I will see everyone at Thanksgiving though, and I'll ask my dad and brother.
OK, so its the complete history, not just the RTC. The book I showed is so exciting. It show John PHillip Sousa and how he was the Navy's band leader at the time!
Hi Sue! WE all love museums and since our children are in the Navy, I, for one, have immersed myself in learning history facts as a way to absorb myself into supporting my son.
I found this as I was searching for flag images on google to add to my welcome home banner. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.paulsilverstone.com/Images/books/us-navy-1945-shad.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.paulsilverstone.com/books/&usg=__iSZTjg0i_yTe4kI8iN_L8IVN02M=&h=534&w=424&sz=30&hl=en&start=37&tbnid=Kz8AsyRgE1EdvM:&tbnh=132&tbnw=105&prev=/images%3Fq%3Du%2Bs%2Bnavy%26start%3D20%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
connie I'm laughing because I thought it was a skewed picture of the old famous photograph of the sailor kissing the gal.
Then I read it was a statue in San Diego. DUhhhh
OK, that is the best pic ever!!! Connie, I was at my dads for Thanksgiving. He had to look the planes up, because my Navy brother has the painting.
Grumman planes.
He says the "fat" one is an Avenger Torpedo Bomber. (TBF?)
And the two fighters are:
F4F-4 Wildcat and
F6F-3 Hellcat .
then he wrote aircraft carrier on the bottom. I don't know what that was for....
Some of you may know I've spent years scanning pictures and slides from the 40's to the 70's and beyond to make videos with music of my family.
In my dads office, I found 6 more boxes of pictures, and one was my grandmothers. My grandfather was in WWI in France and there are many rolls of pictures that are around 3 feet long. I didn't know they did panoramic pictures way back then.
GET THIS!!! One of them is a picture of the ship, the USS Vermont!!!
My dad pointed out all the soliders on the deck of the ship, and said, the men in the white uniforms were the sailors. I have to find a company who will preserve this. its soooo long. Its in very good condition.
Then, my grandfather was in a group shot with other engineers and the back of the picture says US Navy Liberty Airplane engine. My dad says it was my grandfathers "school" he went to.
Joni and Sue S: I was kinda thinking I might even interject some Air Force and/or Army whatever into this. I was telling Connie I found a panoramic picture from the 20's of the USS Vermont, but apparently it was used to transport soldiers - my grandpa went to France in WWI on it!!! Also, I have a picture of my dad I'm dying to show you. Well, some are on my page - of my parents getting married. Him in the AirForce/Army and she a Rosie Riveter! I just love finding out history.
Another topic way off - I just heard James Dobson on an interview with a guy about the civil war. and missionary Ridge. (I lived in Chattanooga for 8 years and toured all the civil war stuff, Lookout Mtn., Signal Mtn, Missionary Ridge, etc.) They talked for an hour about stories - General Douglas McArthur's father was shot 9 times, how each general on each side said if they thought the war had been about slavery (which they said it wasn't) they would have fought for the other side. Did anyone hear this interview? I have many pictures of this war on postcards, memorabilia, because of all the horses!!!!!! And the stories sometimes talk about their mounts. I just love it.
Carolyn, Excellent! Thank God your son was and is safe. You must be very proud. Is that a book or movie, or both?
I get military.com in my e-mail and read the story about the ship that Korea captured and they surrendered. The guy tells his side of the story. I think it was 11 months
Bens Gram, I have gotten bit with the geneology bug myself. My brother is doing my dads side and I'm TRYING to do my moms. I too was in Hawaii in the 70's and saw the Memorial
Hi, Teresa! Sure was great meeting you! We try to stay on top of the military channel and Ntl Geo., and some things have popped up on the History and Discovery channel. Thats awesome about the flag, didn't hear that one! Well, I've been making videos of my parents and family and setting it to music. I put "Boogie woogie bugle boy" at the part with both sides of the family in uniforms..." Then for my parents wedding (both in uniforms, mom was a Rosie the Riveter) I put that song Apple Blossom Time - "What a wonderful wedding it will be, what a wonderful day for you and me, church bells will chime, you will be mine, in apple blossom time..... I'm such a nostalgic!!
Thats true, if we don't do it now - we have to get it down because even as close as my parents are, we are losing stories and information. Its great to compile it. Please post the Navy days pictures etc when you get them, and have a chance.
Yes, I do. My dad always says he designed more Navy planes than the Army. He wears the Army Air Corps hat when he goes anywhere and is quick to point that out to my Navy Mom friends, LOL. He was in Wichita, Boeing, St. Louis, Lockheed Martin, McDonnell, and finally Bell Helicopter. Now my brother works at LM too. It could even include derigibles, couldn't it? (spelling)
You just went to SD??? I am SO Jealous. thats where Patrick is. Arn't you in AZ?
Wow, Linda, I had to re-read your post, there is so much there to absorb! Do you have any pictures bestowed upon you that you can download here?
Paige, I think you've broke the record for serving in the Navy generational wise. 4 generations. How does Billy feel about that? He's making history in your family!
I enjoyed going to that page Linda. I just spoke with my dad this week-end and he shared MORE TRUE stories about history. This time it was about Lindberg and his participation (un-beknownst to FDR) in the South Pacific with Allison aircraft, etc. Its great to hear what really happened - very exciting. I shared your info below about the periscope with my brothers and dad. They loved the story.
I came upon this site when (I have told some of you this story already) a friend from our Texas Chef's association (Sherry) told me her father was an FC, and she personally goes on mentoring cruises to the culinary specialists. CS!
Her dad is Bertram E. Carlson and she has gone on about 4 carriers. She is a Pastry Chef and has her own business in Dallas.
