Daughter has been in Hawaii about 2 months now...I just spent  9 days wither her. I went to Kunia with her one day and watched her as she did Colors. That is all she had to do for "work" for 2 weeks, because I was going to be there. I fixed dinner a couple of nights for a bunch of her friends in their common kitchen in the barracks. They all adopted me as "Mamma Wendi"..They were so excited to have a real meal.

roysmom- son just told me he was asked to fill out his Dream sheet on Friday. So guess he gets to fill one out after all. His whole class he said, except three, is above 90% - HOOYAH SAILORS!!

so hopefully he will get his choice, but of course, Navy needs come first. He wants Denver - then Fort Meade- then Hawaii or San Diego. GO figure. Hawaii would be my first choice- HA HA HA -

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

NavyMom4, I hope your sailor gets the place he wants.  Fingers and toes are crossed for him.

I wonder why some sailors get to fill out the dream sheet and others don't?  My son is going to graduate in Sept. for CTT and I'm so afraid that he will be shipped out to Japan.  :(  He wants San Diego or Hawaii, so I guess, just like always in the Navy, we will have to be patient and see what happens.

Wendi, so glad to hear that you had a great visit with H.  :)  Are there any "must sees" that I should know about, because I am actually going to see my daughter In Hawaii (she lives there with her Navy bf) in Sept .  I was there 30 years ago, to see my brother (also in Navy) but I'm sure things have changed a lot since then.  lol

  • NavyMom4J

Bestymom- I don't know why some do and some don't - maybe depends on their Chief? anyway- thanks for the prayers- My CTT graduates August 12th- but then there is another class he has to take so plans to be in P'cola for a while as he will wait to class up for the class he is calling  shipboard training- He said he does not know if he has to wait awhile to class up or not.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

My CTTs shipboard procedure class started 1week after C school graduation. I hope your's starts that quick!
  • navymom3

Betsy'smom- I used to live there and yes it has changed a bunch in the last 30 years. If you want to swim in the ocean but not the open ocean you can go to Koolina resort they have 4 lagoons and it is open to the public. The Dole pineapple farm is great it's on Kamehameha Hwy on your way to the north shore. Haliewa Town is great small beach town and great for it's little shops. If you keep going On Kam hwy you will come across Sunset beach and several others. Just before you get into Kahuku you will run into the shrimp trucks. They are so good but they only take cash so be prepared. If you keep going in Laie is the Morman temple and the Polynesian Cultural Center. It is wonderful and the show at night is amazing. But they are closed on sundays. You can buy tickets online to reserve your day and spot. Then your going to pass haula where we used to live. Just before you get to Kaneohe you can stop and see the temples. It is just fun all away around the Island. I am sure your daughter has places to take you also. For souveniors go to Aloha stadium for the swap meet. Every wed sat and sun. Hope this helps.
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Navy mom...Denver would be great but sailor was told could not go to Denver on 1st tour usually. My CTT also said he has to take 1 more 1-week class after shipboard procedure. He should be totally finished by end of Sept. Waiting for new orders since Japan was pulled back for him due to his pending marriage. They usually don't go overseas or even to Hawaii if they are married or have children. Norfolk was big in his group..
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

navymom3, thanks so much for all the info.   It's funny though, but I guess it really hasn't changed all that much, because a lot of the places that you mentioned, I have been too.  lol  My daughter lives a block from the beach in Kailua, so I'm sure we will spent a bunch of time there.  I would also love to see some sea turtles.  I will be staying in an entire different place, so I hope to get a different view of the island than 30 years ago.  The last time I was there , I stayed at the Hale Koa and it was only a couple of years old and one building.  I do know that it's now two buildings. lol

rorysmom, so you are saying that in order to keep my son from going to Japan, we should marry him off quickly?  Lol

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Lol...he has been with this girl for over 4 1/2 years and had a contract for the wedding venue...the wedding date in Dec. Is still in limbo due to awaiting the new orders. They may end up at courthouse!
  • navymom3

Betsy's mom-So were are you staying at this time? My husband did see a turtle while snorkeling at Koolina in one of the lagoons. But there is a spot on kamehameha hwy that you can see turtles. They come up on the beach to sun themselves. Kailua is a very nice place to live. If your daughter doesn't know the turtle spot let me know and I can explain where it is.
  • Craig

I had a peek at the available billets for CTT's.  They are actually sending 1st termers to shore duty, which I don't agree with.  They need to be on a ship to learn what they were taught (ie 6yo CTT's).  There is actually a bunch of CTT openings for 1st termers in Denver according to the list.  So, even if their Chief says they will not get they duty, they still need to submit it on their dream sheet.  Heck, it's called a dream sheet for a reason....

For those CTT (6yo)  their training should be revolved on which "V" school they get.

    • SLQ-32(V)1 – A simple threat warning receiver, it was capable of receiving high-bandradar signals of the type commonly carried on missiles and aircraft. The (V)1 was installed on auxiliary ships and small combatants such as frigates. This variant of the system is being phased out as current ships equipped become decommissioned.
    • SLQ-32(V)2 – Initially the most common variant, the (V)2 added the ability to receive surveillance and targeting radars. This provided a passive targeting capability for Harpoon missile-equipped ships. The (V)2 was installed on frigates, destroyers, and 270-foot (82 m) Coast Guard Cutters.
    • SLQ-32(V)3 – Expanding on the (V)2’s capabilities, the (V)3 added active radar-jamming capability. The (V)3 was installed on various combatants such as cruisers, large amphibious ships and high-value replenishment vessels.
    • SLQ-32(V)4 – Designed for installation on aircraft carriers, the (V)4 consisted of two (V)3 systems, one for each side of the ship, tied to a common computer and display console. Additional line replaceable units and software were added to support the wide separation of the two antenna/electronics enclosures.
    • SLQ-32(V)5 – The (V)5 was built as a response to the USS Stark incident in 1987. The (V)5 incorporated a compact version of the (V)3 system intended to give active jamming capability to the Perry class FFG's, which were too small to carry a full (V)3.

I know I've said this till I'm blue in the face, but your sailors need to logging into CMS and seeing which billets are available and writing their dream sheet around these billets.  If they put in for something that isn't even in the CTT billet structure, then they will be single out. Everyone will laugh at them.  I've seen it happen. "Oh, here comes Mr. Aruba"....

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Son was suppose to be on the Fitzgerald in Japan and he was excited about the possibilities on that destroyer. I agree with what you say about shore duty. Interesting about Denver...thanks for the info.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Oh, rorysmom, that is so sad  :(   I hope everything works out so that they can have their wedding.

navymom, she and her bf are renting a house in Kailua.  Not sure where, but she said there are a lot of really nice houses there.  Lol  They are sharing a house with another Navy couple, so that's the only reason they can afford it.  I'll have to check out that resort at Koolina, maybe I'll get lucky and see some sea turtles too.  My daughter and her bf did get to see a bunch of them when she first moved there in May, so maybe she knows where they are.

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Somehow it makes it all the more tragic because he was a CT   Prayers to his family  http://www.navytimes.com/news/2011/08/navy-boxer-sailor-overboard-s...

  • NavyMom4J

Craig- thanks for the reminder about 1st duty availability in Denver...I remember your telling me that a while back so was surprised to hear it again that first tours could not go to Denver..your post here reminded me. I double checked with my  sailor and he actually did check CMS and thus put down Denver. Good advice!!!!!!!!!

And my prayers are with the Family who lost their son- Just reminds you that CTT's are just as vulnerable as anyone on the fleet to have an accident that causes their life.

  • Joy

Our son will be headed to the Denver area for CTT  C School.  Does anyone know if there is housing on base for sailors returning to C school from the fleet???  If not, where do they live for two months????  Of course, my son will find this out when he returns from leave, but I am just being a curious mom and want to know now!  Thanks
  • glassdog

Just got home from going to our sons graduation at Corry Station!  He is now a CTR!  We are so excited and happy that he will be home for a few days before heading to Hawaii.

We stayed at the Navy Lodge and would recommend it to anyone.  On the beach and clean.  Quiet also!

  • NavyMom4J

Joy- I am sure there is housing on base. - Married live off base. It is East of Denver in Aurora- the base is called Buckley.
  • JapanMom

Joy-he will be in the barracks or transient quarters.
  • Craig

Joy - I can give you sooo much info on NIOC Denver.  The base was a National Guard base up till 2004, then the Air Force made it a Air Force Base.  The barracks are brand new, and he will probably stay in those since he's just a temporary guy and unaccompied.  The building he works is called the Aerospace Data Facility (ADF), and the barracks are really close.

He will probably be authorized a rental car, which he will need since there is no chow hall on the base because the enlisted people voted to close it down.  He can always go to NEX for food (Burger King, Robin Hood, Antony's Pizza) and the Gym, NEX, Commisary are right next to the barracks.

Frankly, I'm surprised hearing they have "C" school here.  That is news to me, because I'm really up on that stuff.

I will post something that just became unclassified recently (because of the 25 year rule) concerning the SR-71 program.  It's kind of cool when you have time to read it....This guy works for us and his stories are truly amazing.

    Unclassified version of the SR-71.pdf

  • Joy

Thanks for the info, everyone!  Our son has his written orders.  He is really excited to be Colorado for a couple of months in the winter. He loves to snowboard!!!  So from Hawaii to Denver area.... another great place for us to visit!!!
  • idahojeep

Only two more days until our sons are home!  Making a big sign so I can embarrass my husband at the airport but more importantly to let those kids know I am so proud of them.  :)

I have been reading up on Japan duty at Yokosuka.  I think they are going to have a great adventure.

    Bless all of you today.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Joy, congrats on your son's graduation.

idahojeep, I love the sign idea and I would be bursting with excitement right now.

I'm trying to decide whether I should book a flight to my son's A school graduation yet.  He is supposed to graduate on Sept. 23.  Is it too soon?  He is a CTT and so far, he is doing really well, but I know how quickly things can change.  We will probably be flying SW (we have free award tickets) into Panama City, rent a car and then drive to Pensacola.  Any thoughts?  Should we wait a bit, or go for it, cause with SW you can change your flights without charges?

  • Craig

Joy - PM me his name.  My son leaves Hawaii in 8 days and will be here in Denver for 30 days leave....
  • Craig

idahojeep - I have a mom/spouse over on my NavyDEP.com website who has been in Yokosuka for a while (I think 2 years).  Her name is Sarah (asailorswife)  and is on the site almost every day.

She can answer any question you have about Yokosuka.  She's an awesome gal and knows the system. I've known her since her husband left for boot camp 5 years ago.  She actually just posted the thunderstorm strike that hit Yokosuka 2 days ago...

    Thanks Craig!

Congrats glassdog on your sailor's graduation.  Friday is graduation day at Corry from C school at 9 or 10am and then they have to get to the airport for their 3:00 flight home.

  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Craig, that story on the SR-71 brought tears to my eyes.

    Wow, I'm so proud!!

    Thank you.

  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Congrats to those of you whose Sailors are graduating!

My son just started A School this week, so please cross your fingers and send good vibes for him.

  • idahojeep

Well for everyone who was talking about flights to duty stations and flying from different locations than school - My sons each have to pay $486 change fee to be able to leave from Spokane rather than Pensacola. I guess there is no way to try to avoid it by letting them know ahead of time.
  • navymom3

When they go to travel to get there plane ticket can they not just say they are going to fly out of somewhere else. Before the ticket is already booked?
  • idahojeep

navymom - I guess the flights are booked based on orders no matter what you tell them?  My son was told by the SATO (?) office that it is Navy policy to book that way.
  • idahojeep

It would be cheaper for him to get a flight back to PCola and use the navy's ticket but its already done so I guess they learned a lesson.
  • navymom3

So if they want to want to take leave when do they need to put in that request? My son grads Sept 16th. from A school. But has not got his orders yet. There dream sheets went to the person who assigns duty stations last friday he said.
  • Karen1913 (Ship 10, Div 336)

My son graduates A school on August 12th - unfortunately I will not be able to attend.  If anyone is attending this graduation, I would love to have pictures please.
  • glassdog

Thanks idahojeep!  Paula I will keep good vibes going your sailors way as well as the others there.
  • sunshine73

Congratulations to all those graduating this week and last.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Thanks glassdog, and again, congrats to all with Sailors graduating and getting on with their new adventures!!!
  • NavyMom4J

Karen1913- my son too graduates on August 12th!!!  I would love pictures too- i have asked my son's friend to have his girlfriend take them - I hopefully will share with you. My sailor will be doing the colors for his own graduation- pretty cool!
  • Craig

idaho - clockard is correct, if a sailor wishes to leave from another location,  they will be required to pay the difference in cost, if any, from the original location to the new location.  In your example Seattle, instead of Pensacola.   They are REQUIRED to notify the sato office.

"Navy policy requires official travel must be arranged by NAVPTOs."

I actually talked about this in the above discussion area "Travel to Duty Stations".

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/travel-to-...

The Sato office will route the flight the way the sailor wants.  Lets say the sailor is in Pensacola, and is being transfered to Hawaii.  The sailor must let the PSD know that they will be taking leave.  So suppose this sailor wants to go to Maine for leave, then more than likely he will need to pay a cost, because now the flight goes from Pensacola, to Maine, then to Hawaii.  However, lets say this sailor is going on leave in Dallas, then there probably won't be a cost at all, since most flight go from Dallas to Pensacola, it's just a delay in-route.

He must let PSD know how much leave he is taking.  If it is more than his RNLTD (Report No Later Than Date) is sooner than than is authorized then they will send a message to the detailer to move the date back.

    It's a very simple process.

    Here is the rule book:

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/130...

"3.  Delay in Reporting (DELREP).  Navy Personnel Command (NAVPERSCOM) is authorized to grant 30 days leave in all PCS orders.

    a.  In the event unusual circumstances require a departure from this policy, maximum delay in reporting (DELREP) will be granted.

    b.  Exceptions to the 30 days DELREP allowance must be approved by the appropriate assignment division director/branch head.

    c.  Orders returning members to the continental U.S. (CONUS) or the District of Columbia for separation will contain authorization for delay en route.

    d.  PCS orders will allow 30 days DELREP except in the following cases:         (1) Initial orders to active duty.

    (2) Hospitalization.

    (3) Second PCS move within 12-month period.

    (4) Homeport changes.

    (5) Unusual circumstances such as death or illness, detachment for cause, emergency, or key operational dates.

    (6) Upon completion or noncompletion of flight training.

    (7) Detachment from certain activities in Japan."

  • idahojeep

Thank you Craig.  They live and learn and this lesson was an expensive one.
  • idahojeep

So here is the breakdown on the travel situation and why you need to be travel/airline savvy when dealing with the Sato office.

#1 son called Sato office yesterday to reroute. They tell him they can get flight that is this - Spokane, WA to Portland, OR to Dallas/FW to Tokyo - this flight leaves on a Saturday and arrives on Monday with a 12 hr layover in DFW. Fee to son is $486.

#2 son calls Sato office today and they say we have this flight - Leave Spokane, WA on a Sunday to Seattle, WA to Tokyo arriving Monday. Fee to son for change - $111 to pay for flight to Seattle from Spokane.

The Sato office has been apologizing to son #1 all morning about the idiot in their office who made his flight arrangements yesterday. But to change to son #2's same flight will be an extra $300 on top of $486.

Kicker is they arrive in Tokyo within 2 hours of each other but we get one less day with #1 son. Lesson is make sure one can assist the Sato office if they have no clue of how to help you or have less than good knowledge of geography.

Sorry just venting about something that could have gone better. Have a great day all and I can't wait until tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • glassdog

Our son was to leave from San Diego instead of Denver.  He called sato and they decided to have him fly from Denver to San Francisco, out of his pocket, and they would pay from San Francisco to Hawaii.  I asked him why they just didn't go ahead and have him leave from San Diego and he would pay the difference between Denver and San Diego.  He said he had no idea why they switched from one San to the other San.  Just hope he makes it to Hawaii on time to report!
  • mumziepooh

woohoo!  I have a CTR!  Can't wait until he gets home tomorrow  He and my husband are driving home from Pensacola via New Orleans.  Next stop-Whidbey Island in Washington.
  • NavyMom4J

    mumziepooh- CONGRATS
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

WooHoo for Mumziepooh!!!!!! (and her CTR).
  • navymom3

Congrats Mumzie!! Enjoy your time with him home.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Idahoojeep, so sorry to hear about your sons' extra expenses.  That's just crazy that one could do it so much cheaper.  :(

    Mumziepooh, Woohoo!  Congrats.

My son graduates on Sept. 23, as a CTT.  Does anyone know when he will be given his Orders?  Just wondering because I want to start sending him subliminal messages to try and stay close by mom (or at least on the US mainland, lol)

  • Craig

Betsy - What flavor of CTT is he? 4yo or 6yo?

Secondly, what I would do if I were you is ask him to print up the CMS listing of all the duty stations billets that are currently (for the next 12 months) and say you want to see a copy.  This will show you what billets they have, and where their going.  Here is an example of what they look like...

*Note, even though it is unclassified, I went ahead an wiped out the Ship Names and UIC just to keep our sailors safe. The shore stations don't mean much everyone knows where are shore stations are*

When choosing a duty station, you can go up or down 1 paygrade.  ie an E4 can also take an E3 (or below) billet or an E5 billet.

    ctt_example.jpg

  • Craig

    All -

I posted this over in the CTN section, I thought I'd post it here to help your sailors on their advancement test...

    -----------------

ActiveDuty - Since you messed up your test date, here is a hint, this is one of those questions that is on every advancement test.

    The question:

Question:  When does the E5 advancement test happen during each test cycle?

    Do you know?

Here is the easy way to remember it.

    • The 1st class exam happens the 1st Thursday of the test month (Mar & Sept),
    • The 2nd class exam happens the 2nd Thursday of the test month (Mar & Sept),
    • The 3rd class exam happens the 3rd Thursday of the test month (Mar & Sept).

Pretty easy huh?  You owe me a beer if that question is on your test.  Frankly all of you moms owe me a beer if that question is on your sailors advancement test.  Woo-hoo for Craig getting hammered!

  • Fay

    Craig-

Got a question. I am in the learning stages, so it may sound stupid to you, but gotta ask.. On the Billet list, there is CTT2,CTT3,CTTSM, etc., Is that the rank of the CTT? CTT2- an E2? My son signed on as 4 active and 4 reserve. He plans on being in for the long haul- Career entry. Will go in as an E2 and should be an E4 after A school is what he has been told.  When does he put his choices in?  Is it based on what rank he is at the moment? Thanks for any advise..
