Lisa - Phase 2 he can have a car.  Drive it down so he can experience things off base. So many sailors just remain on base, and end up saying Pensacola sucks because they never get out and do anything.  They have their whole life to play WOW, so do that later, experience Pensacola and the surrounding areas.  

Lady H - Yea, I kind of messed that up when I look back on how I wrote it.  My intent was to say about O'brynt that was just a mere 3rd class that was only in the Navy in 1 year.  Sad, but this is what terrorism does.  May he rest in peace. 

Japanmom - EML leave is Environmental and Morale leave.   Like you said, it allows you a higher priority for Military Airlift Command (MAC) flights.  I used it alot while in Scotland...

Debbie and momfofour   I also talked with my son for a few minutes who is on base at Ft Meade   He said everything there was fine, no injuries just phones sporadic   He was able to get on facebook briefly and posted that he was outside learning a rifle drill for the honor guard when the earthquake hit.   He then called but we also got disconnected   So my guess is everyone is trying to call everyone and its a back jam

G's - A sailor can allows send stuff to his Home of Record.  Or, if you don't have the room, he can send it to non-temporary storage for the entire time he's at Hawaii.  Or, he can ship the stuff to Hawaii. The Navy will ship it for free.  However, he could rent a truck and ship it himself, and make a couple bucks, but to me, it's not worth it.  I'd rather see someone else do all the work while I'm watching drinking a beer.  

Alot of people don't understand Non-Temporary stowage, so here is the rule (remember this is a Joint travel instruction, so it doesn't matter if you're Army, Navy, Marines, or Air Force.

Well, my son got his dream sheet today.  Choice #1, San Diego, #2, Hawaii, #3 Everett.  Not sure how I feel about it, since I'm on the east coast.  :(  Oh well, I'm at least hoping he gets one of his choices.  He said he should know in a few weeks.  I hope so, since he graduates A school on Sept. 23.  lol

Question then: I am confused to what is "C" school- My son said he is in Shipboard ops (currently taking) and sometimes refers to it as like a part of C school? But he just got orders to San Diego- assigned to USS Lake Champlain- (and will be going to Sea for part of this time I am sure) . He is 4 year CTT.  He put down San Diego as his 3rd choice on his dream sheet.

Betsy - I totally agree, why do they give them dream sheets?  Basically they are teaching them how to fill out the dream sheet.  In most cases duty stations are given out by class rank.  However, sometimes they don't, this is where the dream sheet comes into play.  This is why I have preached so many times that I think a sailor without a CAC card reader is a fool.  

Him being a CTT operator means he has alot better opportunity of going to a shore station than a ship.  The duty stations you gave were all ships.  Now if you're a CTT technical (6 years), you basically know you have no hope going to a shore station.  You're "Haze grey, and underway".

NavyMom - He will know if he got a "C" school or not.  Have him tell you what Naval Enlistment Code, normally called NEC code.  Then you know exactly what he does.  

If you look at this link, and hold down the "Ctrl" and hit "F" a find pop-up will display.  Seach for CTT.  Then you can see the codes they are assigned.  This is how I know what flavor of CT they are.  That code is like a dead give away on what they do.

Hey guys!  All of you east coasters - praying for your safety!  We do hurricanes in Houston - in fact we would LOVE one right now!

Son and husband just arrived in Washington - he checks into Whidby tomorrow - he is excited.  He was home for 2 weeks for leave and told me that he is going to try to either work with the SEALS or go IA.  Sigh.  I knew about the SEALS thing but had hoped he wouldn't want IA.  So, thanks for the info, Craig!

Being a sailor, my interest is what the Burke can actually do.  Being a mom, you could really careless what I have to say about this but I'll say it anyways...

Actually, the Burke is so much better than the Spruance class destroyer that I was on. On our class ship the CIWS mount can only fire to Starboard. On the Burke class they can fire to either port or starboard, which is really cool.  

Your son has earned the NEC of 1702, which would really freak out your kid that you knew that.  Heck I bet he doesn't even know that.

Just to tell you the difference between all the CTT's, here is the various systems they repair/operate.

SLQ-32(V)1 – A simple threat warning receiver, it was capable of receiving high-band radar signals of the type commonly carried on missiles and aircraft.  The (V)1 was installed on auxiliary ships and small combatants such as frigates. This variant of the system is being phased out as current ships equipped become decommissioned.

SLQ-32(V)2 – Initially the most common variant, the (V)2 added the ability to receive surveillance and targeting radars. This provided a passive targeting capability for Harpoon missile-equipped ships. The (V)2 was installed on frigates, destroyers, and 270-foot (82 m) Coast Guard Cutters.

SLQ-32(V)3 – Expanding on the (V)2’s capabilities, the (V)3 added active radar-jamming capability.  The (V)3 was installed on various combatants such as cruisers, battleships, large amphibious ships and high-value replenishment vessels.

SLQ-32(V)4 – Designed for installation on aircraft carriers, the (V)4 consisted of two (V)3 systems, one for each side of the ship, tied to a common computer and display console. Additional line replaceable units and software were added to support the wide separation of the two antenna/electronics enclosures.Sidekick jamming antenna on USS Ford (FFG-54) part of (V)5.

SLQ-32(V)5 – The (V)5 was built as a response to the Stark incident in 1987. The (V)5 incorporated a compact version of the (V)3 system intended to give active jamming capability to the Perry class FFG’s, which were too small to carry a full (V)3.

Angie is 100% correct,  He cannot change his residency if he doesn't have an address for that state.  Alot of sailors were changing their residency to Alaska way back in the 1970's since Alaska was paying them each year for the great Oil payout.  But Alaska got wise, and shut that off within a year.  

As Angie said, he really needs to change his residency to Florida, but only if his present state make him pay taxes.  If his present state doesn't, then there is no reason to change.  

For example, I'm from Colorado.  My state milks every dime off of people.  It doesn't matter if you don't live in Colorado your entire time while in the Navy, you must still pay taxes on your military income.  So when I was in "A" school in Pensacola I just changed my residence (along with 1000's of others) to Florida.  I never paid a dime for the next 18 years for state taxes.  It kind of tickes me off how a state would charge a military member for using roads, and upkeep of the state if they don't reap the benefit from that.  Once I retired, then I change my residence back to Colorado since that is where I'm living.

The bottom-line is Don't change it, unless you pay taxes where you are presently from.  The topic will show you the easiest way is to make a will.

Well, I guess anything is possible, since it does seem as though 4 years do go to San Diego.   My son told me that they change things up every few months, so maybe this is the time for him to get his "dream"   It's always a wait and see game in the Navy and we will know soon enough.   lol

The easy way to remember when the test is:

1st class test is on the 1st Thursday of the month (Mar or Sept)

2nd class test is on the 2nd Thursday of the month (Mar or Sept)

3rd class test is on the 3rd Thursday of the month (Mar or Sept)

Lady - I'm not 100% positive, but I think your daughter falls into a weird rule that applies to the SCORE program, which I think is what your daughter is doing.

But like I said, I'm not 100%.  You need to ask your daughter what program she's doing to cross rate (I think it's SCORE but the Navy might have another).

Here is the rule for the SCORE:

14.  Navy-wide Examinations    a.  PO1’s will not be eligible for further advancement except by Navy-wide competitive examination in the new rating after conversion is completed.  In this regard, PO1’s receiving official notification of advancement must voluntarily disenroll from the SCORE program or decline advancement.     b.  Personnel under instruction in a Class “A” School intended to prepare them for rating change are prohibited from participating in a Navy-wide examination for change in rating or advancement.  All personnel ordered to Class “A” School for rating conversion may participate in the advancement program for their present rating, if otherwise qualified, until the class convening date; however, if selected for advancement, a request must be submitted to NAVPERSCOM (PERS-4811/4812) for authority to effect the advancement to the next paygrade in the new rating.

Finally found out where my son lives on Oahu!  Not Schofield base as his orders read, but in a town that starts with a w and that I can't pronounce!  Once again you guys with the info were right on!  He says they have a small fridge and microwave. a communal kitchen, and best of all the swimming pool is across the street from him.  The bad news is there aren't a lot of places to eat in the area but the one restaurant that is there is very reasonably priced.  The bad news with that is they are only open monday thru friday.

They us the NEX at Schofield Barracks, but so far they haven't used the galley, and he of course hasn't asked if they can us the galley.  However hours may not work with his schedule anyway!

Also has anyone ever heard of a sailor that goes in as an E3 and is getting ready to test for E4 who has had to go back and get his college transcripts again?  Mine found out on the 24th that he had to have an official copy to some area in Virginia by 9/1!  I finally called his recruiter who went down to MEP's and dug out their copy and overnighted it on Monday so my son can test on 9/15.  The recruiter said he had never had this happen before!

Glassdog could the town be Wahiawa. That is the area where they built the new building. It is pronounced Wha-he-wha. In Hawaii if it starts with a w the w gives the w sound. But if the w is in the middle of the word it makes a v sound. We started living in Ewa Beach which is pronounced eh-va. He will get the hang of how they pronounce things.

Also there are places in Wahiawa to eat he must be on the outskirts of town only. It's not that big but a lot of tattoo shops and girl clubs.  

{{{{sunshine}}}}been praying for you guys.  Go see your boy and feed him...he is just withering away!  Take a warm shower, sleep in the AC and blow dry your hair - all those things we take for granted until God shows us his power and we have to do without.  

So....son is at Whidby - I've spoken to him quite a few times.  He likes the area - pretty peaceful there - except when the planes land or take off which is all the time.  He is going for some training in Pittsburgh...in fact he has lots of training lined up so he won't be there much.  Pittsburgh?  I wonder what is there?  He tells me NOTHING.  So I ask nothing!

navymom - They actually just changed that rule about 10% per month.  Now (as of Oct 2010) it's only 3%.  It was a money saving measure.  

momoffour - As navymom says, they will find out in December.  However, last year they found out at Thanksgiving (I think it was last year?).  They can then be "Frocked", but they won't actually get paid until their increment comes up (Jan thru Jun).

Sunshine73- so very sorry to hear of the conditions and loss so many are experiencing in your area, and other areas hit by the hurricane. Prayers coming your way and hopes that recovery does not take too long- glad you are ok.

My son said the advancement test was hard!  But he said everyone thought it was hard, so hopefully that's a good thing.  Everything seems about equal for all of them.  The award points that the more senior people have are offset with my sons EP evaluations & points.  So everything is about equal.  Now it's a long wait till Thanksgiving to find the results... (thanks clockard for reminding me it was last year at Thanksgiving they found out).

navymom - Japan shore duty would be awesome.  What would be cool is if he shipped a nice muscle car over there.  He would make quite a bit of $$$.  Those japanese have alot of money to burn, and since it's free to ship, he would do real good.  He should ask his sponsor about classic cars over there...
