You guys are so awesome! Thank-you very much for finding that for me. I was so frustrated that I just couldn't think. You made my day.

  • cinder

You might be eligible to get usaa insurance because of your son. Check into it I have had a policy my whole life through usaa because of my dad. They are a great company.
  • navymom3

sunshine have him make sure the car has a current safety check for Hawaii. In Hawaii all cars have to have a safety check every year. If it is not current he needs to make sure they have one done before he buys it. Or at least make sure it passes. And not just the owner saying ya it will pass. Some sell cars knowing it won't pass and the buyer is stuck with a car they can't get licensed. Learned that while living there.

  • calliecl

Anyone been through a deployment in the CT group? My sailor out on first deployment and seems to be working such long hours! Do they get any days off? he is CTT and he seems to indicate their work schedule is more intense than some of the other rates. Guess could be where he is right now but just wondering if this was normal?
  • sunshine73

My son has had all that stuff checked out (everything looks good). He just has to drive it. Seller is military too and they are having a hard time finding a mutual time. Bank and insurance are ready. Thank you for all your help. It just make me aggravated that I have to get "permission" before I drop someone from my insurance policy.

  • Craig

Per the insurance - I bet the insurance guy is getting confused with the "Tri-State Law", that says as a military member you can't (for example) have your vehicle registered in FL, a NC driver's license and you're a resident of GA. At lease two of the three must be the same.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Callie- I know my sailor is never home,he spends most of his time in hotel rooms away training. he just got back from three weeks across country. The kicker is he found out his deployment has been delayed. He is sure racked up his hotel points for free stays and also points for car rentals. He works long hours at times but seems to have down time. I go visit in the spring, if we can catch him in town lol!

  • sunshine73

It is strange that each island/county has their own set of policies. There doesn't seem to be any problem on my sailors end in Hawaii. He asked me what I was talking about and asked if he needed to call them here and get them straight. I told him no just to have USAA send a fax to them so they will take him off the policy. I know this is ridiculous. I hate to drop them because they were the only company here that paid people what they deserved after Hurricane Irene. Other companies still haven't paid some people and it has been almost 7 mos. We are considering changing though. I just have to check my temper sometimes. This is a small town and I am a teacher. I am usually very nice but have been known to cuss people out from time to time. I am very close to it now. Anyway, thanks for all your help.

Good afternoon!  My husband, who has been in holding, just got orders to San Diego.  We are really excited.  :-D

  • salpetty

Yay!  Good for you amberrose!  Welcome to California :)  How long was he in holding and what is his rate?

  • amberrose

He is a CTT 4y, and had been in holding since January.  Thank you for the welcome, we are really excited.

So - the CTT billets opening up rumor is definitely true!

  • cinder

My son told me that a couple of people have gotten verbal orders for CTT in the 4th week of C school.  I wonder why some people get orders before others and thought they get to have some kind of choice where they will go?

  • salpetty

Hey amberrose:  Is your husband a new sailor or a fleet returnee?  Also did he get written orders or verbal.  Just curious..Thanks :)

  • amberrose

Salpetty - He is a new sailor, and his orders are written. There were fleet returnees in his class, but they quickly received their orders and left.
  • amberrose

    Congrats Lady Hamilton!!!!

  • mumziepooh

Sunshine-I think it is so weird that people have all this trouble getting straight information on purchasing and insuring vehicles in Hawaii - it isn't like thy have never done this before!

  • navymom3

Congrats on sailors getting orders and moving on. I know mine loves being in Japan.

  • mombychoice

Our son is planning to buy a car in GA in a couple of weeks; purchasing from someone he knows. Most likely will receive orders to Norfolk (no problem there) or possibly Hawaii (could be a problem, he will be going from base at Corry Station to Hawaii; he is under the impression that the Navy will ship his car for free; he will be E-3 or E-4 at the time. Does anyone know if it is true that the car can be shipped free by the Navy and if so, is it shipped free from his base at time orders are given (PNS) or is it shipped free from the West Coast???

Really need some good answers about this ASAP. Anyone been through this process, please advise what plans need to be made in advance. Thanks.

We wanted him to wait to make a purchase after he arrives wherever new orders send him, but of course he has his heart set on this purchase to be made before he completes A-school PNS first week of April.

  • Craig

momby - He will be able to ship his car for free.  In fact, he will be paid per diem to ship it.  Most sailors either drive them to California, or they ship them from New Orleans then the Navy puts them on a car carrier and drive them to California themselves.

    Go here for more info.

  • Joy

The Navy shipped our son's car to Hawaii.  He was in Pensacola for training.  He drove his car to New Orleans (closest place) to be shipped.  The shipping place is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and on federal holidays.  Someone at Corry Station was helping him and giving him the paperwork, etc.  It does have to be clean and only a little gas in it.  It took about a month to get to Hawaii.  That was three years ago.  He just had his car shipped back to Baltimore - the nearest place to Fort Meade where he will be stationed.  Again the Navy shipped the car.  No charge.  No problems.

  • boilermom

Any other CTR's here in C school at Goodfellow AF base?   I keep looking......My sailor is quite impressed with the AF amenities.  Real astro turf on a football field (why?), their own hotel room/apt that shares a bathroom with one other room, better food,etc.. There just isn't a lot to do in this town.

  • CRF230dad

cinder - My son was one of those two to get verbal orders but no details as to where, on what, or when. Just that he has orders. He's not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Nervous either way until he gets some details which he can't seem to find out.

  • navymom3

CRFDAD have him try looking at his own info and see if anything is there. Just an option as you never know. They may have added where but not had a chance to tell him yet.

  • cinder

CRFdad,  Your son must be in the same class as my son.  My son told me they haven't gotten their hands on any equipment yet and he is chomping at the bit to do that.  He really like the class and the instructor.

  • CRF230dad

cinder - I think they are. My son also says the instructor is really "chill" in his words. lol He said there is more students than equipment. Where is your sailor hoping to go? navymom3 - I mentioned that to him. I believe it is the NKO page which is secure. He has tried to log-on with the CAC reader I sent him but is having difficulty getting it to work.

  • cinder

My son would like to come back to San Diego and be on a destroyer.  What about your son?

  • Craig

CRF - Just have your son go to this link.  He will get it going.  That CAC reader is awesome once they get it going...

  • Joy

Our son is headed to Fort Meade.  I am assuming he will get Fort Meade BAH and not Baltimore, even though he plans to live in Baltimore.  Is that correct??????  Thanks

  • Joy

Thanks, clockard!  Our CTT 2 son was based in Hawaii for three years, is near Denver now for more training, and will be heading to Fort Meade the first of April.

  • salpetty

My daughter just got a new roommate this week.  A 6-year CTT that just arrived at Corry from NAS.  Went to bootcamp around October I think.  She really likes her and says she's very cool and "normal".  Just curious if this girl belongs to any of you.  First initial is T.  Hope you're all having a fabulous weekend :)

  • Wyobraskamom

Well the time for my son to go to BC is fast approaching.  He will leave for BC on March 6th.  At least we think so.  He has a wart on his foot that we have been fighting.  He has been cleared to be cleared at MEPS on the 6th and if he isn't cleared he will need to be discharged.  He will be in DEP for a year on March 8th.  There have been so many delays, a job change, and now this wart.  He is so ready to go!  I just know I will miss him like crazy!  Does anyone happen to know the maximum size his bible can be for BC?  I just find "small" everywhere I look.  Thanks!

  • Craig

Wyobra - It has to the a pocket size.  What that means no one knows except the RDC.  If the RDC thinks it's too big, then it will come home.  A jumper uniform pocket is about 3 1/2 wide.  I bet if its not blue or black, then it will probably come home too.

    The rule says

    • Pocket Bible, Koran, or equivalent religious literature

Have your son come talk to me at NavyDEP.com.  I would like to fill his head with important stuff before he goes.  The more you know before boot camp, the easier it is.

  • Joy

Our son is an E5.  He is planning to live off base. Guess he needs to make sure.

  • salpetty

In the Navy, you wear the prescribed uniform of the day for your particular unit/division/duty section.  Meaning, you can't just wear whatever uniform you want...If that were the case, I would have been in coveralls 24/7.   And usually, it depends on where you are working.  I worked at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.  We wore the NWUs (new blue digital camis) because we were working in magazines or on the wharf, driving forklifts, etc.  Other groups working in an office environment wore peanut butters or dress uniforms.

  • CRF230dad

cinder - He also wants San Diego as his 1st choice. It would be really nice because he would only be 2 hours from home. Pearl is his 2nd choice then Mayport.

  • salpetty

CRF230dad:  What city are you in?  I'm in Long Beach.  My daughter put SD as her first choice too.

  • cinder

    CRFdad,

My son wanted Japan or somewhere else but he is homesick and would like to come back to San Diego.  I told him go see the world.  Does your sons last name begin with a D or L?

  • navymom3

Cinder that is exactly what I told my son. And he is now in Japan and loving it. After being home for almost a month before he left I am sure he was ready to go. He got so independent while at A school. He has already made some plans for when he gets leave to fly to where my mom lives and us meet him there. So he gets to see everyone. He grew up near there and that is where his friends are. As we are now in Florida and he has no friends here. Plus they get to travel and see the world on the Navy's dime.

  • cinder

I should have my son facebook your son so he can tell him how he likes Japan.  I miss him dearly but would like for him to see the world while he is young.

  • navymom3

Cinder I sent you a message. I know they lived in the same building at NAS and have met.

  • NavyMom4J

All- anyone with experience in their son getting married and how long it takes for the BAH to come through for married housing?

  • CRF230dad

salpetty - I'm in San Gabriel Valley near the 210 & 605 Fwy.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

My son wears civilian clothes to work, I think business casual. I was wondering when is the next testing for promotion? I know last time the percentage for CTN was really low that they were taking for promotion. Hope this time around maybe it will be higher.

  • Craig

momoffour - The easy way to remember advancement date is:

1st class = 1st Thursday of March or Septemeber

2nd class = 2nd Thursday of March or September

3rd class = 3rd Thursday of March or September

  • amberrose

Navymom4J - I dont have a son, but i can tell you from experience that we started seeing our BAH about a month after the paperwork was filed. My husband has to be persistent to make sure everything was filed correctly.

Go look at the museum at Corry in bldg 511.  It will give you an idea how the some of the buildings are laid out and is actually pretty good display.

  • sammy1990

Smou-My sailor's class loved a new steak restaurant "Colt and Broxen". Very reasonable and delicious. They would celebrate passing their tests there. I second McGuires, as does my sailor. It is a bit expensive for my taste, but a "must experience". Bring your camera. Cool picture place.
