BTSMOM she needs to let her teacher know and they will let her go. My son went to the dentist many times.

  • harpist mom

Darrad, Sounds familiar. My son did the same thing. The only difference is that we found out about the wedding after the fact.

Do parents and family members usually attend A School graduation or ceremony?
  • cinder

Some do and it is a very short ceremony. My sons instructor just handed them their papers so he told us not to come we are in CA so we didn't go.

Hi everyone ! Not sure when my son will be coming to Pensacola but he was told last week his CTR classes start on 4-1... Really appreciate all the great info posted on the group page !  I was hoping to visit him in DC where he is stationed now but not sure how much longer he will be there... Can anyone tell me exactly how long CTR school is and do they ever have time off for family to visit ? Thanks in advance !

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

harpistmom, it was almost like that for us. He called me Thursday night at 1:30am to tell me that his fiance is on her way and they are going to the JP that day!! OK...well. So now he's married and heading to Hawaii in two weeks. Wow!

  • sunshine73

my sailor was in A school from March to the beginning of July. We visited on most of the holidays (Easter, Memorial Weekend, and his graduation the first week of July). They all fell on weekends that he didn't have watch. School was very stressful and he enjoyed family visits. He ended up getting C school in P'cola and so we also went on Labor Day Weekend. :)  We enjoyed the A school graduation very much. It isn't anything like PIR.  It was small and family oriented.

  • harpist mom

darrad, Have you met his new wife yet? How old is your son? Best wishes to them!

  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi sunshine73, was your son going to A school for CTR ?

  • Craig

Hey vet moms!!!!  Woo-hoo... I can finally talk again...   My wife and I have been in Asia (we still are), me doing business things, and she doing a medical/dental mission.  After my business things were over, I was able to reconnect with my wife on the medical/dental mission providing care to the people that everyone forgets in the poorest of the poor in the Philippines.  We have seen and provided service to over 4000 people.  Luckily, PIRGIFTS.com provided some of the funding for the meds and ancillary items to make it a success. We had 6 UD Doctors, and 9 US Dentist.  It was really hard on both because they had to use primitive tools to do the job.  I just wanted to thank those that have purchased the boot camp challenge coins from PIRGifts.com,  My job was the teach kids how to brush their teeth.  Most haven't ever seen a toothbrush.  Being the only white guy, the kids really listened well, and asked soooo many questions just to practice their English.

It truly amazes me how I lived for the past 3 weeks, Here is some pictures.  All the services provided were on a basketball court.  It's amazing to see what we had done will such limited resources.

harpistmom, yes we did meet her over the Christmas holidays. My son is 22 years old and I think she is 24. He met her in November when she came to Cory Station to visit a friend who is stationed there. Just so happens...she only lives like an hour from our house! I hope everything works out..went a little too fast for us! :)

  • harpist mom

Believe me, your last sentence pertains to our situation as well, particularly the part about it "went a little too fast." I couldn't understand what the big rush was.

  • sammy1990

ladies, if it helps, my husband and I were in the military, i met him tdy, and we did 95% of our communication on the phone since we lived 1500 miles apart (visited just twice). then we married 8 months later. my parents must have freaked! still married 28 years later with three kids... two in the military. I'm sure a little luck was involved, but we both were ready and knew what we were looking for when we met. god bless the new marriages. may they have the same luck!
  • harpist mom

sammy, Congratulations on your successful marriage and best wishes for many, many more happy years together!

I would have been MUCH more relieved if there had been an 8 month courtship in my son's situation: the details are sketchy, but it seems he may have known her two months and dated her about 3  weeks before they ran off and got married. I don't understand why these sailors feel the need to get married right after they finish school. I'm sure that last sentence will generate some comments! :)

  • NavyMom4J

Seems a common theme with our sons / daughters getting married all too soon. I too was in that situation- My son married all too soon for me too...must be a military thing because so many of them do this quickly. He knew his wife a year before, but mostly a long distance relationship during that time as well. Good to hear from others it has lasted for some!

  • tehlilone (Ship 12 Div 371)

But you know...sometimes it's too soon for mothers no matter how long their son is with a girl. His family was actual surprised when he proposed the month before he left for boot camp and his mom was against us marrying while he was in A school. She said it was too early... we've been together since high school and our 10 year anniversary is this June.
  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

I would feel alot better if my sailor would have dated her for 8 months also! I think whats actually driving this rush is the fact that he is being assigned to Hawaii for the next 3 years and they can't handle the separation so they had to rush around and get married so she could go. I just hope they don't go and throw a baby in the mix...! :)

  • harpist mom

I totally agree, darrad! I could have written those words myself. I got the impression that the girl was putting pressure by implying that she was not willing to wait around - didn't like long-distance relationships. Three weeks is just not long enough to get to know someone.

  • NavyMom4J

Dee- how sweet-  My son and his wife are expecting a daughter this July 4th!!  Will be my first Grandchild!!!!  so excited.

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

harpist mom, when did your son get married? And where is he stationed?

  • harpist mom

    November, Hawaii.

  • KC'smom

So I'm not alone!!! My son was at DLI in Monterey for 15 months. He met his fiancé in his class ( Air Force ). He proposed 8 months after dating & the wedding is scheduled for June. I met her for approx 2 minutes at graduation!!! She seems lovely :-). I have since talked to her on the phone & we text occasionally. There was a big rush for their wedding as well. Only 6 months from the time he proposed. They are happy so I'm happy!!!!
  • harpist mom

Glad to hear things that you like the girl and that everyone is happy!

  • NavyMom4J

KC's Mom- yes- we just have to let go ... and support them when they make these decisions for their lives... I advise, I express how I feel- and then let go. It is hard being a Mom ! I am happy he is happy- and leave them to God.

  • KC'smom

My parents were not so excited at first. But then my mom admitted not knowing my dad for long at all before they married ( he was in officer candidate school ). I finally brought up grandchildren with him.... None planned for now!!! I was nervous bc they will both be deployed & I'm afraid of inheriting a baby for 6 months! Hahaha.
  • cinder

Craig, That is so great of you and your wife helping them out.  I'm thankful for my nice dentist chair and pain killers!!

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

Well my son got married last Friday and I still haven't met her parents. ha KC's mom: I would be afraid of that also!! lol. We have to go meet the parents this weekend and I am so nervous. I will have my boyfriend (of 8 yrs) on one side of me and my ex husband on the other! Weird !!

  • Connie821

Just wondering. Does anyone know if there are CTR C schools at other bases besides Pensacola?  I heard there is but i have not been able to track down the info.

  • sunshine73

My son had a C school at Pensacola and another in Hawaii. His friend had one in Texas.

  • Connie821

Thanks!  Maybe my son will get Hawaii and then i can go visit!

  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi, I have a question, pls... My son is going to CTR school, called A school, what is C school for CTR? is it a specialty school that takes the training a step further? Just wondering how all this works ! If so, how do you get to go to C school? Does everyone if they want to after A school ? thanks !

  • Craig

I love doing it Sue....  CT's are where it's at.....My son is almost done with his time in the Navy.  The civilian companies are already interviewing him just waiting for him to get out....

Arkansas - A lot of people don't understand the meaning of "A" and "C" school.  So let me explain and give you a little background about what a "C" school is.

Lets say you want to learn to be an auto mechanic, that school would be considered an "A" school.  You are learning the basics.  Now suppose you want to be an auto mechanic that specializes on Corvettes.  Well you still need the basics, but now you need another school to learn Corvettes.  That school would be like a "C" school because now your not just a plain old auto mechanic, now you are a specialist.

Same as the Navy.  You learn the basics in "A" school, then you go to a "C" school to learn a special skill.  When you go to a "C" school, you are assigned a Navy Enlisted Code (NEC) that tells everyone what your specialty is.  To find all the schools offered, you can go to this link:

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/nec/NECOSVolII/Docu...

To give you an example how this works, lets use CTR for an example.  Wait for that PDF to load.  Use Ctrl-F and search for CTR.  Keep scrolling down and look for "Source rating CTR"  (remember electronics has the letters CTR in it so you will get a lot of hits).  The main groups of CTR start about 9105, but they're (CTR) throughout the whole manual.   You can even see that CTR's are doing OS, ET, and other rating jobs.  These NEC number (four digit example 9105 or 9131)  are always listed in numerical order.

    Does that make sense?

  • Joy

So, Craig, will the budget cuts affect these civilian companies that are interested in our CTs?????
  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi, tks so much Craig, great info, so appreciate it !

  • Craig

Joy - The military is downgrading everything, however, intel continues to grow.  Intel is where it's at.  We always need intel.

Companies must still follow the sequestration rules, and they can't hire until the new fiscal year comes about.  This is the same way it been done for 35 years with the budgets.  They tell us in March that there is no more money, so we must hold all purchase orders until October (new fiscal year).  Then when 1 October comes around we order everything.  The money runs out again in March, we are told to hold our orders until October, then purchase everything again in October..... the cycle continues.... So yes, my son will need to wait until October to get hired, but when that comes, it will be pushed through since he has everything already submitted.  He is just in a "hold" pile.    He is keeping all his options open, and may stay in the Navy, but I hope he doesn't.  There is just too much money to be made on the outside as a CTN.

  • cinder

Hi Craig what about CTT are they desirable?
  • Joy

Thanks for the info, Craig.  Our son has a couple more years as a CTT but will be looking at the civilian companies too.

  • Dina0106

My fiance was offered a 6yr CTT, but he wants my opinion on how I'd feel before he starts the Qualification process. I just want to know between 4 yr and 6yr, what is better for him. I know the training is longer and the 6yr. I just want more info
  • cinder

In the discussion forums there is info on 4 year and 6 year CTT.  The big difference is that 6 year will have C school which means they are at Corry about 18 months.  They also get to E4 when they get done with school.  My son is a 6 year CTT on his first deployment so far so good.

  • Dina0106

    Thanks Cinder
  • Craig

Dina - Just like cinder said, there is a lot of info in the above discussion area.  The main difference is the 6 year guys are extremely educated on electronics and signal spectrum's   The 4 year guy are just the operators of the equipment (ie the 6 year guys can operate and repair).

  • Dina0106

Thank you Craig. He seems to enjoy his training so I assume he wouldn't mind more lol
  • Craig

Dina - I'm confused.  Are you saying he's already in the Navy? It sounded to me like he isn't even in yet.  Do tell...

  • Craig

Jeremy - They are not segregated, within reason.  Sure there are special programs that are kept separated from the rest, but it's a whole CT team, not just the CTR rating.  I think what you're hearing is "CT's" in general are kept separate fro the rest of the sailors.  This is true.  CT's work behind vault doors while on ships.  Everyone on the ship wonders what goes on behind those doors.  Little do they know, it's usually us playing "hearts" or "spades" card games when were off duty at sea.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Just had some exciting news...our CTT just received the Navy and Marine Achievement medal (NAM) for work on the system during deployment. He was "loaned" to this ship  4 weeks ago and has worked nonstop. Will be stepping off for the first time today for a break in Rome! He is hoping to get back to his own ship soon, but says still a lot of work to be done. Having struggled all through high school, he is thriving in the Navy.

  • Craig

Congrat to you rorys, and your sailor....Woo-hoo!....

  • cinder

Wow! That is great congrats to him.  It is so nice to see our sons and daughters that didn't like school being so successful.  It just goes to show that everyone has a talent and they  just need to find the right place.

  • jangles

I will brag a little on my son as well. CTI in Monterey, he is in the top 10 in his class and was chosen for total immersion training in a foreign country for a month. So excited for him. He is excelling as well. Yea for the Navy....it works for him.
