Jangles that is great CTI has one of the largest drop out rates.  He must have a real knack for languages.

  • jangles

Yes Cinder, that is a real motivator for those CTI's down there. He does not want to fail. He does nothing but study...We're real proud of him. :)

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Yeah Jangles! Sooo great! I do believe our sailor and his wife are committing to makes the Navy his career. He has been in just under 3 years and it I such a relief to see him thrive.
  • Ducky

My newbie classed up three weeks early and didn't get the head start that other branches received.  She started behind.....really  hoping she can catch up.  She has also had a large amount of technology issues....internet doesn't work in her barracks or is intermittent at best.  She studies until 2 am most nights, but she is trying to get out on weekends.  Tough school....

  • sammy1990

ducky... what rate? these courses take an unreal amount of studying, luck and motivation. many do not make it, and that is not an insult, it is just how the rates work. tell her to plan on doing nothing but studying. to get into study groups (really help) and just forget about the outside world until after she passes each test and they get a day of relief before the next course starts up. she can do it. she had what it takes.
  • Ducky

Sammy ...I'm not sure what you mean by rate...still new at this.  I guess she and her entire class bombed the first written quiz but she scored very high on the first listening quiz.  Said the vocab is killing her.  She is in a study group every night until 8:30 on the other side of base and then has to find somewhere to study since the light in her room doesn't work.  She also said none of the Navy folks are in her study group, it is Army and Marines. But at least she is making connections.

  • sammy1990

rate = ct or ct_ for this forum. their job. my son is a ctn and in the beginning of the course they said "no Marine has ever failed" my son called me and said "I'm studying with the Marines". so this might be a good thing!
  • Ducky

    She is CTI.

  • KC'smom

Ducky- you should join the CTI group. Everyone in that group has or had a kid at DLI. If you have a hard time finding it you can get to it from my homepage. It's a very stressful school. My son graduated 6 months ago.
  • Craig

Hey all, since Facebook is taking over the world, I've decided to open a Cryptology section over there so more families can join in the fun.  It's all about our sailors....  I will continue to bounce back and forth from here to there, but I really love talking Navy.  So come join me....

  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi Craig, I just sent you a request to join the FB page, I think this is a great idea! Tks

  • Craig

    Arkansas,

People need different places to find info.  It's almost like a bar.  You find the one you feel cozy in and just jump in and get and party it up.... Woo-hoo....

Just remember, I am not a Facebook guru, so give me some time and we will build that section up.....

  • cinder

Hi Craig, I just sent a request to join.

  • navymom3

Craig I also sent a request to join.

By the way my son still loves being a CTM and has meet the girl of his dreams in Japan also a CTM.

  • navymom3

Ok I just sent my request again. My husband was logged into FB so the first request was from him. LOL

  • sunshine73

Hey Craig, I'm in the fb group but am a little concerned about others seeing our posts. The way the new fb has the side feed, everyone can see our posts. Am I over thinking/worrying?

  • jangles

Hey Craig I just sent you a request as well.y son is at DLI is Monterey doing great, going on a month of totalimmerion in April to country with his language....excited and proud mom.

  • Craig

sushine - I will ask the guru Kathy.  Just so I understand it, can't people see these post too? (ie N4M)?

Good to see people looking at different places for info.  Let's just have fun and enjoy the time.  Remember, I am totally new at Facebook, so if I mess up, just let me know.....

  • Craig

navymom3 - Woo-hoo on the gal in Japan.  God works in mysterious ways.  When we travel the world we will find true enjoyment...  It's good she's military too.  It makes it a lot easier to vent the problems.  They are on the same wavelength....

  • sunshine73

Yep. People can see this but they have to look for it. On facebook, what we say pops up on the side feed for all of our friends to see. My sailor has been told that we shouldn't even say what his rate is ANYWHERE but especially on facebook. It says that the group is closed but not private or secret. Secret is the only way I know about that doesn't show. I'm not an expert, so I am not sure.

  • sunshine73

    Seems we are good.

  • Ducky

I don't think our feeds from the FB group can be seen.  I was in a PIR group where the feeds did not show.  That would have been seriously embarrassing considering some of the conversations we had.

  • Craig

sunshine - Frankly i think they tell these sailors this so they get big head.  Geez, they have they winter blue uniforms with a big CT symbol on them.  Everyone knows your a CT.  If they didn't want them to know, they would have you remove the symbol.  Anyone can see full names of all sailor at each advancement cycle.  It's open source info.

I should tell you some of the stories that go around about CT's.  Geez...  We actually have the official rules about social networks at work.  Let me see if I can find it.  It will explain what is OPSEC and what's not.

  • Mommahead

Gee wiz Ducky...wonder which group that could possibly be:)

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

I sent my request to you Craig. as far as infor, I have never been told not to say his rate (which most people dont know what rate is what). As far as facebook, before he was deployed , they were told to not mention anything about their deployment and to tell his family and friends the same, and everyone has respected that and it has not been a problem. Heard the Navy plane went down and all three crew members were killed, praying for those families.

  • sunshine73

You guys have to understand that my son takes things very literally. If they tell him not to do something, he is not gonna do it. So, if he thinks it is a big deal, I will try to honor his wishes. He is my facebook friend and I do not want him to be upset with me over something so silly. ;) He is already so tight lipped about everything. I don't want to make it worse.

  • sunshine73

Craig, I also wondered about the patch thing.lol

  • sunshine73

And they proudly where CT shirts....hmmmmm....

  • Craig

sunshine - When we pulled into Yugoslavia, which at that time was a communist country, we were required to be in uniform while on liberty.  They could care less if we were CT's or not.  Anyone could see the dang lightning bolt and quill on our badges.

When at a school command we always use to "play" with the guys going through school.  We just loved messing with them.

When you're on a ship, CT's actually work inside a vault.  When there is an emergency security drill, they will always post a Marine (or 2) with an M-16 outside our door to prevent intruders from getting inside the space.   It national security we are protecting.  However, the big story on ships is they tell the crew the reason the Marines are there is to shoot us in case we are captured so we can't divulge the stuff we do.  That is a huge joke.  As if I would let someone purposely shoot me.  But people believe it.  Many people....  It's so funny....

Let's face it, when you work in a vault all day long you think of stupid stuff you can do just to mess with people....

  • cinder

    LMAO!,
  • Craig

I totally agree with you clockard.  I hadn't a clue about Facebook, but I thought I'd give it a try to get those that don't know how to use N4M's an outlet.  We need to keep both of the groups going...

  • cinder

I agree at work I'm not allowed on facebook my only connection is N4M.  They have blocked Navy Dads but not our site. Yay.  It is important to get info everywhere.

  • Ducky

Heck my daughter sent me a shirt that says DLI on the front with script in her language and on the back it says "We learn------------ so you don't have to"

  • Craig

cinder - Can you check to see if my website is blocked?  I'm kind of curious.

    http://www,NavyDEP.com

  • cinder

I have been able to go on the navy dep site for some reason the navy dad site says it is a social media site and that's why it is blocked at work. That just happened about 4 mos. ago.
  • cinder

You should be able to just put last and first name as long as you have the right PO number.  I put my sons rate and he has never said anything.  The sailors handling the mail I'm sure don't care about his rate and like Carig has said he walks around the ship with his rate showing.  My son was never told not to tell people his rate or to close his facebook page.  Like Craig said they like to play jokes on the newbies.

  • Craig

All sailors have the right to keep a private as possible or not. It is their life.

However, I hope they are not fooled to think no one can figure out their job.  If someone really wanted to "hunt" a CT sailor down to get them to commit espionage or whatever, then all they would have to do is look up their name from the advancement list, and plug it into facebook.  Every award ceremony has the names and rating listed too.  Everyone knows the big CT websites. If the Navy didn't want for people to know their rating, then they wouldn't openly publish the advancement list in the news.

    Just my opinion...

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woo-hoo, 1st two Information Dominance Warfare Specialist (IDW) go to two CTN's.

Congrats to CTN1(IDW) Theresa Verity and CTN1(IDW) Michelle Krecota.
    Well Done!

  • CTmomof3

Craig, you are a knowledgeable guy.  Do you what the MCSAP program is? My son just applied for this.  I do know it's a 6yr commitment.   He told me "it's small and you won't find out anything about it." He should know by now not to underestimate his mother. From what he said it will look good on his Navy/post Navy record.   True??

  • sammy1990

    we have Google! lol
National Security Agency’s COMINT Signals Analysis Program (MCSAP)
  • sammy1990

oh, and another search said the M is for military.
  • Connie821

Craig, what is the significance of the enlisted information dominance warfare specialist?  What do the CTs have to do to get there?

  • Craig

Connie - The easiest way to explain it is using the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) as an example.  When I got my ESWS pin it was brand new program.  Now it is a require program, just like all the other warfare pins.

Lets use the USS Stark as an example.  The manning of the USS Stark is 200 sailors.  When Iraq fired upon the USS Stark with two French exocet missiles it killed 37 sailors, and severely injured 21. How can a ship survive with 1/4 the ship out of commission?  It because the crew had their ESWS pins.  With ESWS you qualify are each station on the ship.  You might work in the deck department one week, the Gunnery department the next, the signal bridge the next, and it continues until you qualify at all stations.  Does it mean you know that job?  No, it only means you have the basic knowledge and can be easily trained to take over compared to someone that doesn't have ESWS.  It gives the CO a "warm-fuzzy" knowing that his crew is fully qualified when/if something happens.  The ship can continuing fighting with downed shipmates.

Same as the EIDWS pin.  You have to learn about everything.  You don't just know your job, you know what everyone is doing....

    Make sense?

  • Craig

CTmomof3 - Military COMINT Signals Analyst Program (MCSAP) means he's a CTR with the NEC 9147. Remember CTR's do the COMINT (Communication Intelligence) and the CTT do the ELINT (Electronic Intelligence).  I can't really go into the 9147, however, I will show you the unclassified statement.  Just go here and scroll down till you get to 9147 (there all 4 digit numbers).  They are in numerical order.

  • CTmomof3

Than;ks Craig,  I can't seem to get this site to download.  After 10 minutes it wasn't even 1/4 done so I gave up.  Must be the site/document as my computer isn't normally slow.   Career wise in your opinion is the program a good thing to get into?  He won't know till April if he's been accepted.

  • Ty's mom

Good morning everyone, I am new this group my son is in boot camp now and will be graduating on 4/19!!! After bootcamp he will be going to Pensacola A school for CTT. What can you tell me about a CTT other than they will be refered to as spooks, lol.

  • Connie821

Yep, it makes sense, thanks Craig. So eventually my CTR son will have to earn the ESWS and th EIDWS too? On his first enlistment, generally?
  • NavyMom4J

Craig-how can I get my sailor in touch with you to talk about his coming to Denver to meet you?  He said he wants to chat - he would love to meet you and see if you are available to ask you some questions - see the facilities here in Denver when he comes home in July- I think you said he needs to get a ticket? can you let me know so i can put him in touch with you?  THANKS

  • sunshine73

my sailor got pinned this morning with his surface warfare pin. So proud of him! He earned it last month but had to wait until his 90th day at sea to get pinned. Pictures to come...

  • Bonnie
