Hi Moms. My sailor is in San Angelo Tx for C school. Has anyone been out there for a visit? any recommendations on safe hotels for a single mom? On line rates look very steep, except for the really questionable motels. Any suggestions for things to do in the area? I will be going out Nov.1. Thanks.

  • navymom3

Carolina I would check into the navy lodge. They are all really nice and normally cost a lot less. Your sailor would just need to check you in.

My sailor is graduating on Oct 18,,,,

  • carolina Lynne

thanks, Mammas for the info about San Angelo. I was able to get my sailor to reserve a room for me  at the Inn on base for $56! much better than the "roach motel" in town!  Looking forward to my visit in 2 weeks, and then in Jan. he will be at Ft. Mead Maryland.

I recall sending everything by USPS (I think FedEx does the shipping) but it is sent from a PO. Nothing can require a signature.

  • navymom3

Shannonlf don't waste your money sending fedex. It does not get there any faster. I shipped everything in a lrg priority box. And I stuffed it full. They do have a bit more room at Corry as mine had his guitar, laptop, video game system and a small tv. Of course when not in the room he kept everything locked up.

    Hi All,

I have a question and hope someone has an answer.  My son's W2 showed that he was still a CA resident and I need to know how he gets it changed to Washington.I don't think he even knows who to talk to.  Any info. is greatly appreciated.

  • sammy1990

which state is better for state taxes? he can remain a CA resident of he wants to. some do it for resident tuition after the Navy. otherwise be goes to his finance office and he'll fill out a form. think it's still some that way. might even be done online these days.
  • navymama

I asked my husband about this (he's ex-navy) and he said that whatever state they were in when they joined is their state of residence.
  • navymama

no, that's what I meant, regarding for the sailor's address.  the spouse has to use the state in which s/he resides.  my son, fortunately, signed up in our home state and county so......  ;-)

  • navymom3

My son changed his state of residence when he was in Pensacola to Florida. Florida has no state tax so it was beneficial for him to do this. However he did have to get a Florida drivers license which he needed to do anyway as he didn't get one before he went to boot camp. My other sailor has always had Oregon as his state of residency even though he has been stationed in Washington and now Florida until last month when he licensed his car in Florida. Even though Oregon has a state tax that come out of your check if you live there all military are exempt in Oregon from paying state tax. Cinder it would be benefical for your son to change his state of residency to Washington since they do not have a state tax either and California just rakes then in state taxes. When my middle son changed from Hawaii to Florida he saw an additional 100 dollars on each check once they stopped taking out the state tax. They just have to go to the finance office and fill out a form.

  • cinder

Thanks everyone just a matter of getting him to do what he needs to do. LOl
  • navymom3

Cinder I think it took mine 3 months of me reminding him. Then once done he said that was easy why did I put it off. LOL

  • cinder

Yeah well I bugged him in Florida too and all I heard is I've got it covered. Yeah right!
  • Craig

Hey all, sorry I haven't on on much.
I actually am spending a bunch of time on Facebook. I just really enjoy seeing how all the hot topic always pop to the top.

Anyways. Per the State of Residence, here is what I wrote before... http://navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/most-sailors-d...
My recommended my son change his when he 1st joined the Navy. He did. He switched his to Florida and never had to pay a dime in taxes. He has now completed his 6 years so he's in for a rude awaking when he has to start paying that tax again.
I know I change mine when I went to Pensacola for school. I didn't pay state taxes for 18 year because I became a Florida resident. Woo-hoo!!!
  • Craig

clockard - It has been a wild year.  Between having to rebuild 4 houses in the Philippines because of the Typhoon, to running my website, to almost retiring, I have a full plate....

  • Craig

Since the only Marines in Augusta are CT Marines, I found this quite heart warming.  Bravo-Zulu!!!

To my Marine Brothers... God bless you....

Watch out! That last step is a doozie! LOL That was one hell of a fall
ooooooooooooooo falling from a curb is so dangerous, gotta be very very careful...

  • idahojeep

    That is awesome!

  • harpist mom

Cindy P, I strongly recommend that you contact a chaplain at Corry Station.

  • Reid's Ma

Cindy P, please let us know what you find out. You son is our daughter's/son's brother. Praying for you and your family.

Does anyone know information about the Navy Warfare pin test and review boards?

  • idahojeep

Well it has been a long almost 4 years for my twin sons.  #1 son will be getting out hopefully in August and coming home from Japan.  #2 son will be reenlisting and has gotten his next duty station - Whidbey in Washington.  Which is so awesome because it is only 5-6 hours from home!  So he will be leaving Yokosuka also in August he thinks.

He got Dir Sup and Craig you have lots of info on that?

  • navymom3

idahojeep my son is dir sup in yokosuka. He is CTM though. He was assigned a ship and went out with it when it went out. But didnt have to sleep on it. And worked in the shop when the ship was in port. Mine hasn't been able to look for orders yet as he is out on a SM. He is almost done though and man has his beard gotten long.

  • idahojeep

Ha navymom3 mine cannot even grow beards!  #2 is very glad to have gotten Whidbey and also glad to have gotten dir sup.  They are both on ships in Yoko for the last 3 years.

  • navymom3

idahojeep my oldest was stationed whidbey for 3 years. He is AT though. My son said the secure compound that the CT's work in is called the womens prison. A nickname that it was given as he said it looks like a prison. LOL It does rain up there a lot. My oldest is also jealous his younger brother can grow a beard. Here is what he looks like now.

  • idahojeep

Ha now that is a beard!  I wish I could tell which building on Google Earth.  Usually there is a fence around it.

  • navymom3

My son says there is a high fence around it with the barbed wire on top. Just like a prison. LOL

  • Tuttismimi Ship 11 Div 154

Does anyone have info on the Montgomery vs 911bill and which is best?
  • sammy1990

post 911 worked best for us (we had both over the years in the family).
  • Tuttismimi Ship 11 Div 154

    Thank you,Sammy1990..
  • napstersmom

So long everyone, my son graduates today from CTN A school and will be moving on!  Good luck to everyone.  :)

  • sammy1990

congrats! no need to leave though, this group has moms for ctn's in all stages of their career.
  • idahojeep

napstersmom you do not have to leave the group!  My sons have been CTRs for almost 4 years and I am still here!  Congrats on his graduation!

  • VsMomCB

    Good Morning All!!

My son's going to CTN a-school soon, any tips/comments I can share with him to make it go as smooth as possible?  Thanks

  • dereksmom21 Norfolk CTT

My son is stationed in Norfolk VA and his CO informed him the he advanced up so now he is a CTT2.  I am so proud of him he has only been in for 2 of his 6 yrs.

  • StacyLHR (14/136)

Just thought I'd say Hi. Hi!
Son's at a school for CTR.
  • CryptoDad

72nd anniversary of the Battle of Midway.

    Navy crypto's finest hour.

  • Rhondi S-03 D-220

My son is at RTC now (PIR 18Jul). He will be in Pensacola for CTT school following bootcamp. Originally he was enlisting as a Nuke but changed his mind once he got to MEPS. Can't wait to see him!
  • idahojeep

Rhondi I think he will be happy he changed.  My twins are CTRs in Yokosuka and have said they are so happy they chose the CT rate.  They say the nukes are all miserable and get very little liberty if in port.

  • sammy1990

agree. our sailor was pushed to go nuke but after talking to some in it (first on the boat, last off) it was decided CT was a better choice. enjoy the process, mom!
  • Rhondi S-03 D-220

I'm glad to hear all the great things about the CT rate! Sounds like he's in the right field! Thanks for the information. We only live a little more than an hour away from Pensecola. Glad he will be close to home through A school!
  • PatriciaT

My sailor will be separating from the Navy in a few weeks.  I was wondering about the blue service flag I've been displaying since his enlistment . . .  Does that have to come down when he leaves the service or can I continue to display it?  If it must come down, is there some other public way to proudly show he has served?  Thanks for your thoughts!

  • sammy1990

it comes down. you can get something that says "veteran".
  • navymom3

RunnerLHB i saw the question you sent to everyone. But don't see a discussion. Your sailors school would have to be 6 months long or longer. Then even if they do get married there is no guarantee they will let him live with her off base. Depends on rank, how he is doing in school. It is really hard to get. Plus there is no military housing per say as they would be living in a regular rental. Most just visit several times and let there sailor concentrate on passing school. Since he is at Corry that schooling is really hard.

  • Craig

    I missed the discussion too..
I know this will go WAY over you guys heads, but I will post it anyways because some of you may understand it. The Standardized Accounting Category Codes (ACCs) are on your orders (I have attached an example). This code allows you to bring your spouse with you to a training command.

The rules for bringing a wife is the school has to be over 20 weeks long. This is school time and does not include holidays, weekends, and such. If you go to this link, and look at Page 12 of 13, you will see the 341 (no move) and 342 (ok to move) codes. This is why you need a 342 on your orders.
    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/130...

bet you guys are totally confused now huh?

  • sammy1990

what's he doing next, clockard? mine is 1/2 way through and changing coasts.
  • navymom3

I couldn't find the discussion either so that is why I replied in the comment wall. I hope I was close to being right. LOL That is good info Craig.

Mine is also getting ready to PCS but not until dec or Jan. His wife is getting out next month. So he is heading to San Diego to help her pack up her place in a couple weeks then they are going back to Japan until he PCS back to San Diego. Sammy where is your son headed?

  • sammy1990

thanks, clockard. mine is still unsure about whether he'll get out or re-enlist. I know he's talked to plenty of civil service workers who work next to him but don't need to wear a uniform. the DC area is surely a great place to call "home base".
  • Kelliann

Hi everyone! My son just started BC but will be a CTR. I have no idea what that means so that's why I joined this group. Also would like to know more about Corry Station.
  • boilermom

    Hi Kelliann,

My son went to A school at Corry, C school at Goodfellow in San Angelo, TX and has been in Misawa, Japan for 2 1/2 years now.
