Can someone share the timeline they experienced after commissioning ceremony? Will my son leave right away for any schooling he needs before assignment? is there a time lag before he leaves? How long does it usually take for him to get to his first assignment?
We have other family obligations going on for sibs, but want to support his next steps. Any help?

Claire24, See my answer to the discussion you started " Next steps after graduation."
Your son may leave right after graduation or not. "Hurry up and.....wait." It's the Navy way, and they have to get used to the uncertainty.
How long to first assignment depends on how long their specialty school is, and those vary quite a bit. My son's first duty assignment after commissioning was about 10 months later, as I recall.

Claire24, welcome to the Navy family! And congrats to your son on his journey. There are many avenues to take to get to this place. Some of us have loved ones who went thru ROTC as your son did, some went to the Academy, and some went thru OCS. My son commissioned thru OCS this past May and was able to spend 12 weeks at his home office recruiting (OHARP). His designation was SNA (Student Naval Aviator). His orders took him to Pensacola, FL at the beginning of August where he waited for an opening in his next level of training. He received his flight suit yesterday, will finish API after Thanksgiving, and then will report to his next duty station: Corpus Christi, where he again, will wait for an opening in his next level of training! This is the way it is done. No one can really tell you an exact time line. A lot of it depends on what his designation will be, how much additional training he will need, and when there will be openings available for him to advance to the next step. Assuming he is graduating in May, he will be competing with the Academy graduates for all those spots. He will not know anything definitive until he receives his orders, which will not happen until after he is commissioned. You might receive more insite at the specific page associated with his designation, although, it will only be info based on prior experience. Good luck to you both!
