commissioning during COVID

Dear All,

Not certain how active this group is, but I'm looking for a community of moms. We are relatively new to the military. My son will commission this coming spring -- really hoping the battalion will be able to figure out some sort of in-person ceremony, but if not, does anyone have ideas/advice for how to make it special at home?

Also, I'd love any advice for how best to support my son.

Hi Meredith! My son is at OCS currently, in class 07-21. What class is your son in? I have been supporting my son by writing lots of letters. He has told me how much he appreciates letters since the training is so intense. Also, because of the pandemic, the candidates don't get liberty so there's not a lot to look forward to & the letters help. We also sent him a package for Christmas since they were allowed to receive goodies/cookies during the holiday stand down. Have you checked Facebook for a group specifically for you son's class? Most classes have a "friends & family" group & it's nice to connect with others that way for information & support.

Would definitely love to hear about this as well.  My son's graduation date is March 12 as of now.

        Meredith,

I started following Officer Training Command Newport on FB when my DS was at OCS.  Since Covid, they have been streaming the commissioning ceremonies live and provide a link.  If the Covid restrictions are still in place in the spring, this will provide the next best thing for you.  Perhaps they will continue to stream the ceremonies as it would provide an opportunity to watch the commissioning for those who can not make the trip to RI.

Also, follow the OCS page on this site.  It might help answer some of your questions.
