For any Sailors that will be looking for something to do over the weekend after PIR, check www.metrarail.com and look at the Union Pacific North Line. The train has a station right next to the base and the final stop is downtown Chicago. There is a train that gets them back to Great Lakes at 7:25pm. They have a special rate for Great Lakes military in uniform to downtown, $2! (Make sure to tell them to purchase the ticket ON THE TRAIN, not from the machine. Tell them to hop the turnstile if they must, and the conductor will sell them a ticket at the military rate on the train.) We often see groups of sailors downtown, especially around Chicago events like Taste of Chicago. But, that is not til July. The train is definately an option for Sailors that will not have family there over the weekend. It is also an option for Sailors with family that would rather take the train rather than drive downtown and have to find parking.
