OPSEC!!! PLEASE READ!!!!

I found this posted on another group, so I am reposting it so that all of you can see it. Please make sure that your sailor knows that they need to disable it if they have a facebook. Friends can also check people into places, so make sure that they are aware of this and disable it completely! OPSEC is no joke! This is what helps to keep the ones we love safe!!!

A side note: Terrorists track the military family members as well, so it is very important that all of us keep OPSEC in mind at all times! Do not send any movements through emails, discuss them in public places, and especially do not put them anywhere on facebook!

Thank you!

"This email was sent out to the ships in the Atlantic Fleet (and I'm sure
much of the rest of the navy) with important information on OPSEC,
facebook's "Places I Checked Into" feature, and general privacy settings
that anyone associated with the navy should be using.  There was a
terrorist attack on the British Fleet which was found to be connected to
the "Places I Checked Into" feature.  They asked that these guidelines
be passed along to family/friends, so my fiance and his ship PAO (public affairs officer) asked me to please pass
it along to the Navy For Moms Community.
Here's the email that was sent out:

Subject: **OPSEC THREAT ADVISORY: FACEBOOK TRACKING (UNCLASSIFIED)**

Importance: High

ALCON,

THE ATTACHED DOCUMENT AND THIS MESSAGE ARE ADVISING ON THE RISK

ASSOCIATED WITH A NEW FACEBOOK FEATURE.

Recently the social engineering site Facebook has introduced a new

feature called "Places I Checked Into."  This feature allows other

Facebook users to see exactly where you are logging in from.  It is

important to note the default for this feature is ON, unless overtly

disabled by the user.

Various OPSEC and DoD forums have indicated (via open source reporting)

that British forces have been targeted by terrorist/insurgent cells in

the Southwest Asia AOR (which includes Afghanistan and Iraq) by using

this feature.  Tactically, this Facebook feature can be employed by an

adversary to refine targeting and corroborate intelligence on specific

sensitive locations and/or exploitable personnel.

The attached file "mod facebook places.pdf" provides guidance on how to

modify Facebook settings so that a user cannot be tracked online by

another Facebook user.  I've also attached the overall Navy-recommended

Facebook privacy settings.  If you don't have a Facebook account, pass

to family or friends to ensure they have the guidance required to secure

their accounts.

I hope this is helpful to some people and perhaps opens up some people's eyes as to why OPSEC can really be important!

Happy Veteran's Day to everyone- Thank you all for your significant other's or your own service!!"
