HISTORY:  On February 19, 1945, the month-long Battle of Iwo Jima began.  The U.S. wanted it as a base for air missions toward Japan.  The iconic photo of raising the flag at Mt. Suribachi was taken five days into the battle.  Nearly 20,000 Americans were wounded, and 6,821 killed.  27 Medals of Honor were awarded- many posthumously - more than in any other WWII operation.

Ship motto:  "Among the men who fought at Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue" - Admiral Chester Nimitz

"An Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary, this 20 minute Technicolor production unfolds with graphic energy the nearly month long battle for Iwo Jima, a volcanic island lying 700 miles southeast of Japan, in which 20000 Japanese and nearly 7000 American fighting men were killed, a struggle eternalized by Joe Rosenthal's photograph of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a giant U.S. flag atop 550 foot high Mt. Suribachi, cinematically captured here in this well-edited effort by Warner Bros."
