BAH & BAS after marriage

Hello ladies :)

My fiance and I are planning to get married sometime next month, and I was just curious how long we can expect to wait afterwards before he starts getting BAH. Also, I'm a little fuzzy on how BAS works now; the way I understand it, everyone gets it but if you live on base, you're automatically on the galley list, which means they take your BAS right back. Now, we're living in an apartment off base and paying rent out of pocket, but because he's an unmarried E-2, he still has to "officially" live on base, meaning he has a barracks room and is on the galley list. So, if I have it straight, he'll be able to check out of the barracks and take his name off the galley list after we get married, meaning he'll start seeing that BAS money in his paycheck... right? If you could follow that, I'd love some help. Thanks in advance!

BAS is for the Sailors food...it isn't up to the Sailor to just take a chit to the galley to get it.  Once he is married he needs to talk to his Chain of command about where the chit needs to go.  They don't just get it for living off base.  If he is on Sea duty, he doesn't get the BAS, also if he is in certain schools that are under the set length of time to live ashore he doesn't get it

It depends on where you are and where you work.  You route the chit through your LPO and then it goes up your chain of command, then it is taken to the galley to get stamped...then meal deductions will stop.  Tell your husband to talk to his LPO. If it's approved through his command  its goes to the galley then PSD and they will stop it. That's what my husband did, he knows how to do it because he is a PS.  You do need a reason to stop meal deductions such as abnormal working hours, not enough time to eat during lunch, etc..

To add to it, BAH does start to kick in after you get married. It will be back dated to the day you get married for sure. My husband and I just got our back pay and started getting the BAH on last paycheck. It took a little over a month for us to get it so always expect to be able to have some money saved up in order to make it in case it takes a little longer like it did for us. BAS from my understanding is for the Sailor, not you, unless you have children. For instance my husband leaves at the end of July for deployment for 9 months and I was told I would not be getting BAS just BAH. You will get it though!
