Nuke School Charleston

My husband is in Nuke school at the NWS in Charleston, SC. We are enjoying it here! This group's for anyone who wants to talk.

Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival at Goose Creek

This is another posting I "borrowed" from the Nuke mom's site - again, I thought it would be helpful for this group too!

Posted: 11/13/09 (by Casey-Ryan's wife)

Ryan has assured me that none of this is confidential, and that all of this information would be easy to find by anyone that really wanted to find out (i.e., it is not dangerous to our Sailors to post this. I was adamant about making sure of this). I thought it looked very helpful, especially to Moms who might be wondering about mailing things or their Sailor's schedule during the first few Phases.

He is an MM - I'm not sure if EMs and ETs might've gotten a paper with more info specifically for them, but a lot of info for all the rates are on here.

***You SHOULD be able to right-click the images (there are 2) and click "Save Image As..." and save it on your computer to print later... but I can email it to you if you like. The former might just be faster/easier for both of us :) ***

"Darla in VA (Mitchell's Mom)"'s Down-and-Dirty Quick Guide to Nuke School (aka, the Nuke Pipeline)  posted 8/2/2010:

Down and dirty explanation of the nuke training pipeline -

* Indoc - 1-2 weeks - Goose Creek, SC - mandatory briefs and classes upon arrival before they "class up" for A-school

* A-school - 3 months for MM, 6 months for ET and EM -
Goose Creek, SC - specific classroom training for their rate (job) -
after graduating they get 1-2 weeks leave and are promoted to E-4
paygrade.

* T-Track - hold period while waiting to class up for
Power Training School - they'll do cleaning, stand watches, etc. Length
varies depending on if there's a backlog of students waiting to class
up. New PTS classes starts every other month on the odd months.

* Power Training School - 24 weels - Goose Creek, SC - specific classroom training on nuclear power

* Another hold period while waiting to class up for prototype but I
don't know/remember what it's called. I imagine it's a lot like T-track. (*Casey's Note:  This is called "Grad Hold" and is a lot like T-track in that there are no classes or worries about GPA, they can sign up for college classes thru Trident Tech or Columbia College.  Those teachers come on base and teach them.  Or they can volunteer at various places.  Either way, their schedule is a LOT less stressful than Power School)

* Prototype - 24 weeks - either Goose Creek, SC or Ballston Spa, NY - hands-on training at a working power plant

Specifically, check out the discussion called Your Sailor's Schedule
Upon Arrival to GC (Goose Creek). I referred to this many times at the
beginning.

If I've made any mistakes, please let me know.

Is there a seasoned Nuke Mom who could give us an updated list about what items my son will need once he gets to Goose Creek?  Or is it pretty much the same as several years ago?

      Computer
      Iron/Ironing Board
      Bowls/Silverware
      Can opener
      Hygiene supplies
XL Twin Sheets and mattress pad
      Black Socks
      White and Blue t-shirts
      Hot/Cold Mug
      Underwear
      Scarf
      Water filter bottle
      Sunscreen/bug repellent
      Microfiber cloth to clean
Something to control odor of boots

      Anything else to add MOMS?

        Maria - Michigan Mom

Hello, I just joined this group.  My son's PIR is coming up soon and will then be going to A School in Charleston.  I am just wondering, approximately how long after arriving at A School will it be okay for us to go to S.C. for a weekend visit?   I was thinking of trying to go at the end of May.  I am not sure of what his schedule will be like;  and if he will have any time or privileges allowing him to have visitors.
